My brother is three feet away from me. We can play hotseat, but that is slow and annoying. Is there any way we can play over a LAN without shelling out another 55 bucks for another CD key?

I don't know, but you can probably test and find out yourself in less time than it would take you to get a useful response

2 players on 2 comps = 2 serial numbers ... no luck, I am afraid ...

In the vanilla (unpatched) version of dom II you could. Me and Panther used to, back when we lived together, long ago, before he bought a second copy.

At first I hated this back in Dom2, after they patched it, but then it just gave me my friends an excuse to buy the game.
Illwinter is one of the very, very few developers that I buy games from. More sales = more similar games.

Ok, but I think that a "group" licence with, let's say, 5 or 10 free users with a slighly raised price would be a good idea to greatly increase the market of the game. It is not so easy to convince five or six friends to pay 50 euros. Playing solo is, imho, simply no fun.
Yes, there would be the piracy problem, but I think this can be handle by the paper only manual, it's no sense to play a such complex game without instructions.
Lastly, I think the Space Empires game series sell well enough without serial number.

I can see the pros and cons but I dont think a group license is likely.
I think its possible to use a lan to play the game as if you were playing hotseat and playing multiple characters at once. But it makes me wonder about the security of pbem games.

Lan parties can still be done for Dominions_3, however it does mean a different style of play.
Basically if there's 3 or 4 systems then have each system do a hotseat game. Players will rotate between the different systems, if one player is waiting on others then he/she can cook up a meal.
The other benefit of this hotseat strategy is even if you are losing in one game, you could be winning in another game.
