I'd happily take Niefelheim or T'ien Ch'i (slight preference for the big oafs, but I could be pushed if someone else came along and wanted to play them).
Though, I will be in NY this weekend. This makes me a very bad candidate to play in a game that's starting this weekend - I'm only here because Jurri made me!
But if the game gets off to a late start, or I could get someone to play my first turn or two (shouldn't be too complicated) I'd be psyched to join.

edit: hmmm... that's what I get for confirming my NY plans before finishing my post. I guess I need to figure out a T'ien Ch'i strategy now... Or maybe it's a sign that I shouldn't play... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Hi WSzaboPeter:

You're welcome to join us, but I think Quietly has already claimed the Giants. Is there another nation you'd like to play? Maverni? Mictlan? Rlyeh? C'Tis?

We can't let Meglobob control all the water provinces! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Hmmm. If no one is going to play another water nation, maybe I will switch to Rlyeh.

Hi Quietly:

Welcome to the game! It won't be a random map. It will be the MP version of the Glory of the Gods map. I have a corrected version. Jurri and Ygorl had found errors in the standard version.

3 - Rlyeh
4 - Ctis

PashaDawg

Sure! Let's have a big party!

Nerfix: You're C'Tis

Xennon: You're Ulm

I will take Rlyeh, unless Solo would like Rlyeh. I could play Malverni.

Solo: What will it be? Rlyeh, Malverni or Oceania?

I think we should change the number of VP provinces to 17 (one for each player) but keep the number of cumulative victory points to 13, because it will still be hard to hold on to more than 3 VP provinces with this number of players.

PashaDawg
November 2nd, 2006, 08:50 PM
Hi Solo:

Maybe you should not play Oceania (would you prefer Rlyeh or Malverni).

Cainehill said this on the bug thread:

***********************

Sheesh. When oceania's stealthy commanders go onto dry land, they change into a form that is a _poor_ amphibian. Worse, when the Capricorns go onto land, they can't _MOVE_. In fact, the only command available is _DEFEND_, removing their hide status and causing them to get into battle.

This one more or less makes oceania unplayable until fixed, unless someone wants to play a game with no land masses.

*****************

Although I did a quick test. The stealthy units regain their amphibian status, and EA Oceania has no Capricorns. Maybe you'd wanna do a test game before committing to Oceania.

Hi:

All players should send me their pretenders by Monday night. It will be a .2h file (which stands for "to host"). After you create your pretender, you can find the file in the "newlords" folder that is in the "saved games" folder.

Please password protect your pretenders so that I don't accidentally open your turns during the game.

My email: whscom {a t] maine [do t] rr [d o t] com

Please also send me your email addresses as soon as you can so I can compile a mailing list for the game.

Thanks.

Apparently there is a bug with the patch that makes a nasty horror attack heroes who are not horror marked. This could be quite problematic and frustrating. Perhaps, we should not use the patch in this game until it is fixed.

See: http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/threads/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=467272&page=0&view=collap sed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1

However, this would mean that players might need to have 2 versions of Dom3 on their computers, if they wanted the patch in other games.

What do players think?

Meglobob
November 5th, 2006, 11:19 AM
I have both versions, so ok with either.

Nasty horror's attacking would make the game even more exciting. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/mad.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/evil.gif

All the other MP games have patched, so we could have interesting times... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Jurri

I'll be making my pretender only after the decision, that's for sure http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif I'd say we might as well wait until the next patch, and play unpatched until then: the real big problems of the unpatched game are high up the research tree, I understand, so it will do less damage than the evil horror attacks unless the next patch will only come after a looong while.

It looks like players are more partial to play the game with the patch in spite of the horror issue. Fine with me. The horrors could make it fun for a bit.

All players should send me their final pretenders by Monday night at 9pm Boston time.

Pasha

Cainehill
November 6th, 2006, 12:49 AM
Um - as far as I can tell, the patch didn't fix a damn issue, bugwise or gameplay wise. I'd prefer playing unpatched, and suggest that those players who patched without saving a copy of the original, should uninstall and re-install.

Edit : _and_ it would be nice to know whether we're playing patched / unpatched before we submit our pretenders. Suggest pushing back to Tuesday since it's up in the air now.

CharonJr
November 6th, 2006, 07:26 AM
I like how Solo handles the patch-issue in the other MP-game I am currently playing.

He keeps a copy of the previous turn-files and if a Horror attacks the turn will be rehosted. But with this number of players it might be quite a hassle...

Personally I would prefer the patched version, but would have no problems with installing a pre-patched version (should be no problem to have both a patched and an unpatched version on one harddisk or am I wrong ?).

CharonJr

PashaDawg
November 6th, 2006, 09:56 AM
I will delay starting until Tuesday.

So far most players want to start WITH the patch. So, unless more players express concerns, we'll use the patch.

In any case, I will make sure players have enough time to submit replacement pretenders, etc.

calmon
November 6th, 2006, 09:58 AM
To prevent people crying and stop playing because their pretender dies in a horror attack in turn 2 i would prefer a start without the patch.

But here we've the problem that i'm not sure that all players could install a second 3.0 Version of the game.

An illwinter coment about a hotfix would be very good!

CharonJr
November 6th, 2006, 10:39 AM
Will try to install a 2nd Dom version with 3.00 later today. If this is no problem I would tend to favour the non-patched version now since it would indeed be bad to lose people due to this bug.

And yes, a comment concerning a hotfix would be good.

Well, while knowing beforehand that you'll get eaten by a grue if you get to the HoF certainly makes for a quaint environment, it's not necessarily tremendously unbalancing even if some nations benefit more from an active pretender than others and thus are at a disadvantage from the condition. You could still risk it with an awake pretender on research-duty until the next patch I guess (It could come early and thus give you the advantage over those who didn't risk it)... But that would be quite costly a gamble if you only got research (and not provinces as usual) out of your pretender in the first 12 turns. Nations like Niefelheim and Yomi and others that have expensive commanders that are in danger of getting into the HoF easily might want to rethink their strategies also.

That said, the bug makes for a silly game no matter which way I look at it, so I'd prefer to play unpatched. You need to reinstall the game to a temp directory to get access to the unpatched executable, but that can't be so big a hassle as to prevent anyone from doing so if they are willing to commit to a game that will probably last for several months. Also note that as far as I know the only problems you'll be likely to encounter if the host has a different version of the game are battle-replay related and only under certain rare conditions at that. So it shouldn't be impossible to play the game with the host running unpatched and the lazy part of the players running the patched version.

Normally pretenders work as the mod change nothing for them (I can create a game with the mod and a pretender saved before at least).

As far as i know from Dom2 you just install the mod and the game checks if you receive a trn file whether to use or not to use the mod.

So there are no problems using/not using mods in different games. You just need the mod (you don't need it as preference!)

EDIT: Yes, it works. Just copy the hhnerf.dm (twans mod) in the mod directory. Thats it! You don't use them for your new started games and you don't use it for every other mp game which doesn't use the mod.

You just use it for our mp game here. Thats all will be proved automatically by the game.

PashaDawg

Hi All:

PLEASE INCLUDE "Dawnstrike" IN THE SUBJECT LINE OF ALL EMAILS ABOUT THIS GAME. I USE A EMAIL FILTER TO HELP ME KEEP TRACK OF THE EMAILS. THANKS.

I have received pretenders from:

Abysia
Acro
Atlantis
Ermor
Kailasa
Marerni
Mictlan
Neifelheim
Pangaea
Sauromantia
Tien Chi
Ulm
Yomi
Rlyeh

I have not heard from Stossel, who signed up as Vanheim. I will send him a 2nd PM, but if he does not respond by the time I get home for lunch, then someone else could have Van if they really want it. (If he shows up tonight, I will give him back his slot, but I want to give other players a chance to lay claim to the slot.)

I have no way of knowing which pretenders where made with 3.0 or 3.01, except for players' email messages. So, if you are unsure, you might want to send me a replacement pretender. (It might not matter, but I would prefer not to chance it and then restart the game.)

Finally, I have increased the number of VP provinces (one per player), but I have left the total cumulative points needed to win at 13. I think that is fine, because it still means taking VP's from other players. (Let me know if you object.)

I am crossing my fingers that we can start the game tonight!

So, every mid-summer turn, VP's are accumulated. This is going to be a fairly quick game? Any theories on the turn count at game's end? My guess is 48 turns if the game is starting at summer, or 54 turns if the game starts in the winter.

I definitly read the rules wrong. I thought you need 13 from 18 VP to win. Maybe because i had in mind that dominions is an epic game and my mind clarified the accumulated clause in a wrong way.

So the game lasts only for 3-4 years.

I think it is more likely the game will last approx. 5 - 8 years (through turn 88 approx.) It will be hard for any particular player to control 3-4 VP provinces for long unless the other players are not paying attention.

There is 1 VP province per player. So, players need to scramble to prevent any particular player from grabbing too many of them. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

I only mean't for this week as I have alot of free time. Normally when I am at work, 3/turns a week is more than enough. Still managing to do my turns in just 10 - 15 mins tops. Perhaps I am overlooking something?

The army's of oceania march closer to the center of the world and letting the cowardly nation of Rlyeh run before them.

As they settle in the first victory location they conquered they set up a strong defence and march on to the find the captidal of the foul muthuh and banish the false god to eternal suffering!

Deadline is Tuesday at 9pm Boston time.

I think we should start the 3/turn per week schedule as originally stated. It is Tuesday / Thursday / Sunday.

Glad to hear it. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif Just had some bad experiences with Dom2 games that with 2-3 turns a week that just took so long to progress the players lost interest.

I think consistency of hosting is as important, if not more so, than frequency for maintaining interest. It seems that most games run into trouble when hosting is delayed indefinitely when a player drops out, we try to find a substitute, etc. If I have to repeatedly check for a new turn for a week or more after the last scheduled host, I find myself much less interested in the game when it finally resumes. On the other hand, if a game is scheduled to host only once every few days, and consistently follows that routine, I have no problem keeping my interest level up. It is a big boon to have longer times between hosts in late stages of the game, as turns take longer and longer to complete.

Hi All:

I received a message from a player that he is going to be away until Monday. Unfortunately, he did not play his turn before leaving. I think the player is new and did not intend to hold up the game. So, I will put the game on hold until Monday night.

In the future, all players are requested to seek substitute players when they cannot play for extended periods. That way everyone else is not forced to wait.

Thanks.

Given that I've had a stale, and that the player obviously _could_ have sent his turn in with the note saying that he was away until Monday, I don't see why it should be held up on his account. Not to mention that the player could/should obviously have brought up his holiday schedule somewhat more in advance.

After all, to quote Reverend Zombie, "I think consistency of hosting is as important, if not more so, than frequency for maintaining interest.".
