View Full Version : I love Bogus

I had a scout in enemy territory, watching the main enemy army lumbering towards my front. I knew I did not have enough troops to stop them, I knew they were going to hammer me. I expected them to make it to my capital before I had a chance of stopping them. Then I get a battle report from the enemy province right next to my front.
Bogus had appeared and trashed the army! They took very heavy losses and were scattered. I was able to step in and mop up the smaller armies and take a few provinces. No idea where Bogus went, but he saved my nation!

Who's Bogus?:)

Bogus is a Troll Warrior. He appears in event, accopmanied with by a Troll Archer (who aims at commanders!), a Dark Knight riding a gryphon and a Battle Mage of some kind protected by illusions. They use various magical items and have few unique items, like Bogus' ring "Precious".
They are also mentioned in other events, e.g. when they rescue some of the captured blood slaves.

Bogus and his crew are a random event which calls up what is apparently a playing group from the developers desktop days. Its also the old name of their company before it was Illwinter (Bogus Games if I remember right).
A story like this is why I sometimes mention that random things like events should be controlled by a switch setting. Solo players like me would like to have more of them, and many multiplayer games would turn them down or completely off since they like to KNOW that strategy won the game rather than a stroke of luck (for bragging rights).

The black knight also targets commanders, a very nasty trick is to charm or hellbind him and then copy him command into your thugs and SCs without buffs.

The Troll Archer has bow of precision, and the battle mage uses Ice Pebble Staff.

But the Greenstone armour and the Precious are the bests.
I think a few readers met Fjollvitner (at least in the hall of fame of my second multiplayer game of Dominons3 (Newbie Game EA topic). This scout with the Bogus equipment makes a great thug, and the Pendant of Luck is on the way to reach him.

I love heroic strength jotun scouts (i have one in a sp test game), stick boots quickness on there and you'll have a weapon with longer range than a bow, a hell of alot more damage and 2 shots per turn.

Anyone ever managed to enslave all of Bogus party ?

Five-member party.
Bogus, Kreon, Kartuk, Fang, Fadmargast.
Bogus is the Troll Raider (#646); there's also a Dark Knight (#647), a Troll Archer (#648), a Troll Mage (#649), and a Warrior Mage (#650). Bogus is the only one of the five that has unique magic items, IIRC.
Bogus is the slayer of chaff (*); the archer does go for commanders; one of the mages is an air mage and tends to go for Ghost Wolves et al.
Their arrival -can- be a fairly nasty event, but you may be able to replace your troop losses. I'd say that Intor Vadul the Ancient Presence is far less welcome at your capital than Bogus, unless you're the Ashen Empire.
(*) He's theoretically less efficient at it now, because weapon lifedraining has been toned down. He's still a pretty tough monster with a life-draining sword, regeneration, and decent skills.

I don't need boots of quickness, since Jotun Scouts are SACRED, and I got a Water9/Nature9 bless strategy in that game...

Ever seen Bogus accompanied by hundreds of troops?

What's the big deal with the Greenstone armor? Its stats don't look that great. In fact, I usually throw it away if all my melee commanders have body armor on.

I should have sceencapped this, but...
I'm playing Early Arco (I love that Golden Age!)
I see an army of amazon, usual flying horses and that sorta nonsense, so I go to invade.
Turns out the flying horses include a Dark Knight, because my scouts failed to report that Bogus and Crew were there.
Greeeat.
So, I decide to give the place a pass, and go after easier enemeies. I plan to go back...and then notice that some Troglydytes have shown up.
Wonderful.
Ok, going to attack it later still-
And then the Fort-motte-and-bailey goes up.
I suspect that had I looked more closely, there probably would have been Barbarbians and Knights as well.

The water 9 blessing stacks (multiplicatively) with quickness from the spell, boots, or jade armour, so he would act even more with both of them.

Fine, then just send a lone commander (Scout, Priest, whatever) to capture the province and siege them out. If there are so many troops in there, they'll just starve if you give them enough time for it (Bogus and friends won't starve, but they're not that nasty all by themselves).
Plus, while you're waiting, YOU are getting the revenue from the province.

There is one, both from the GUI and the commandline. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/confused.gif

I can't understand this desire for Dominions, since order/turmoil and luck/misfortune dominions are core game concepts and major strategic choices.

AFAIK, independents don't ever eat so the single-scout siege can never take the castle.

Honestly, in single player I kinda like leaving weird provinces like that around. Gives the game more personality once it begins to wind down.

Eh, I've gotten Greenstone armor before and thought it sucked - decent protection, but very high fatigue. There something the stats and description didn't say about it?

I am wondering the same thing. The stats look mediocre, unless there is something that's not in the stat description.

Really? I didn't know that...
Still, you get several benefits of the province (gold and free passage) just by camping your cheapest commander there. And if you know there's a fat Bogus group in there, you can even keep him warm until you're ready to tackle them and get the loot.

Id like to scatter castles on large maps as part of my chaos games (where I also randomly scatter sites, armies, equipment) but a castle in the game that way falls to the single-scout thing because everyone automatically defends. Ive asked for a map command of #patrol to fix that.

Bogus attacked a big army of mine and got trashed. It was early in the game, so now I have an Oni King with Precious, Greenstone Armor, the wraithblade, and bracers of protection, plus he's got the fear/howl ability, and so his fear is currently +14. Pretty nice of Bogus to sacrifice himself for the good of my nation http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Speak of the devil!
So right at this very moment I am playing as Machaka and I am pit against those new Oni guys. I've got a huge army of tribal warrior guys (the ones that throw javs and have a spear and a big shield), some archers, and a nice group of spider riding doods along with my priestesses and commanders. I'm heading right towards their castle where there will surely be a bloody battle and what do you know? BOGUS! He stole my glory!
Oh, well at least now their countryside is mine to plunder!

Does anyone know if, once Bogus is killed, if he comes back? As in: can you get the same special event more than the life of Bogus? And, are there more than one adventuring group around? If not, I hope somebody makes a mod addon that features several different ones.

True, but I tend to use them as ballistae not machine gun. Fire two shots at start, then let the bloodlust overcome him. With natur 9 he is more then a match for anything in close combat.

Remind me please Graeme - what are the exact rules of this multiplication? Is it 50% chance of 2 attacks per turn and 50% chance of 3 attacks, same for both melee and missile attacks?

I don't know. Giants already have very high strength, but their scouts lack decent armor. Personaly I would take heroic defense or heroic toughness over heroic strength on my scout any time. That would help him survive battles much more than 39 strength. Unless you are trying to make SC killer out of him.

He definitely comes back; I've seen him show up the turn after he's killed. There's only one group.

I'm not really sure how it works, since I've seen an ice devil with 150% heroic quickness make 9 attacks per turn.

I've killed the whole band several times in some games (and got multiples of some of their gear, as a result).

Regarding quickness:
AFAIK (from Dom2) quickness from spell or item doubles your actions and provides some other bonuses but does NOT stack with the 50% quickness from blessing - you just get the doubling. The maximum quickness most units can get is +100%
Heroic quickness, however, is special. Heroic quickness can give loads of actions. This stacks additively with the +50% from bless or the +100% from item/spell (or +100% total from both).
I've had units with four or five full actions per turn in Dom2. It's the best heroic ability IMO. Even better in Dom1 when the bag of winds could summon a free elemental every action...

You know, that's what I thought too! That's why I was a bit surprised when Graeme said it multipies. I thought inn Dom2 quickness from spell/item simply replaces 50% quickness from bless. But since Graeme sounded confident I decided that maybe I do not remember things correctly, or perhaps it was changed in Dom3. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

I'm pretty sure that you're right, and it doesn't stack. I got the heroic quickness and blessing quickness confused.
