Anyone know what benefits my units will get for entering?

Your commander and units under his command will gain experience.

Do 100% of the troops entering gain an experience star? What about if they re-enter -- can they gain additional experience stars?

This is from Dominions II and most likely hasn't been changed at all:
EXPERIENCE

"Does anyone know how a kill coresponds to an XP on the hall of fame?"
Not sure but something like this:
Deaths x5
Experience (points, not lvl) x2
Kills x1
From a post by Johan O in another thread:
Here is a list of effects of increased experience.
XP 1 (15pts = 1 Star)
Att +1
Def +1
Prec +1
Mrl +1
XP 2 (50pts. = 2 Stars)
Att +1
Def +1
Prec +1
Mrl +1
XP 3 (100pts = 3 Stars)
Att +1
Def +1
Prec +1
Mrl +1
Str +1
XP 4 (200pts = 4 Stars)
Att +1
Def +1
Prec +1
Mrl +1
Enc -1
HP +2
XP 5 (400pts = 5 Stars)
Att +1
Def +1
Prec +1
Mrl +1
Str +1
All units, except mindless ones, get:
1 exp per turn
+1 exp for participating in a battle
+3 exp for winning a battle
+1 exp per unit killed in melee combat
Kristoffer O posted January 27, 2004 17:41
Not +1 for killing, but +1 for hitting an enemy. Quick Nataraja with 4 swords of swiftness, Chi Shoes and Stone Bird.

Champions Skull: +3 Exp/turn

Re: Academy of War question [Re: FarAway Pretender]
Academy of War gives 4 exp per turn, The Ancient Master gives 8. (to commanders AND troops!! - Arr.)
Academy of War is not unique, and it is still a level 0 Blood site. The Ancient Master is unique.

Great list Arralen! And as everyone know every star of experiance also gives +1 to research.

Nice chart... are the XP requirements per level, or cumulative? (i.e., does it take 50 or 65 XP for a fresh unit to get 2 stars?)
Also, do spells that hit count for XP? if so, at which rate? (one per hit, or one per spell max)
I've seen lowly Priests enter the Hall of Fame after a few meetings with Ermorian armies, but I never paid too much interest to their experience stars, just the big red one - and kills count a lot for that, and Banishment kills a lot of Longdeads.

I've noticed some of my mages getting bonuses to their magic ability (as in +1 death, etc, per empowerment) seemingly as a result of experience. It doesn't seem to happen 100% consistently, however. Anyone else seeing this happening?

It seems winning the arena championships gives exp. If I don't recall wrong my guy jumped from 0 exp stars to 3 stars winning that.

Winning in the death match gives 100xp IIRC.

Per-Level requirement.
..do spells that hit count for XP?
AFAIK, no.
Neither do missile hits.
.. priests ..
Can easily get into the Hall of Fame when fighting Ermor, but not because of spell hits but because of "killed" (banished) longdead etc. - they get 100 kills or more quite fast http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
.. some of my mages getting bonuses to their magic ability ..
Haven't see this.
AFAIK the only way to get +1 death is by coming back via "Twiceborn" spell. The mage might end up with "feebleminded" or "mute" affliction, and therefore useless, as well, though ...

Are you sure it wasn't a starting random that you didn't notice until later?

No xp for killing? Doesn't sound right.

No more than for hurting him. If a lone Jotun Axeman killed an unconscious Dragon, he'd get in LOTS of hits, and got 1 point of exp from each.
Hitsw = exp work for melee, and I can understand why ranged units would get experience more slowly than others, but what about trampling? Does it still have attacks?

Arralen,
Is 5 stars the most you can get beyond which you cannot advance any more in stars?
Also, I wish there were hit points increases with each star. It would help out human thugs immensely.

Also, if the experience increase that Arralen quoted when entering the Academy of War (and when fighting a battle) correct, then it seems almost useless. That is, if the Academy of War only gives you 4 experience points, it almost always makes sense to fight a battle instead, because 4 experience points are the minimum you are guaranteed if you win.

There's no experience level above that.
Mind you, if you're a non-pretender commander in the HoF, you benefit from maintaining enough kills, experience and/or deaths to remain there -- your heroic ability gets stronger so long as you're in the HoF. It stops improving if you no longer qualify.

Except that usually when you fight a battle you take casualties. With the Academy you can park a commander with 120 (or more) units in the province until all 120 have 2 or 3 experience stars before ever going into battle.
Of course, I don't think that experience does enough to make worrying about it worthwhile. Increases in attack/defense are marginal at best - the only things that really seem to benefit is morale and possibly missile troops that start with at least average accuracy.

Taqwus,
Thanks for the clarification. It's been aeons since I last played Dom II, and the Demo of Dom III doesn't last long enough for me to easily catch those factors! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Arralen,
Level 3 is 25 turns! That's a long time to park your commander and troops.
As for the casualty issue, I guess I tend to take less casualties since I tend to build prefer elite, durable units. (My favorite nation in Dom II was Jotunheim with the Niefel giants theme.) Also, I am concerned more for the experience acquisition for commanders than the regular units--who are ultimately all fodder. And commanders, esp. AoE spammers, will benefit far more from fighting battles.

Attack and Defense seem to me to be some of the most important stats for fighters. For those who think Morale is more important http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif, experience also increases that, and Precision (and at 3-star, Strength). Not only does the Academy not cause casualties, it also doesn't cause afflictions. I think it's a great site to have, especially during peaceful times, and/or for troops on reserve. Not to mention that it can be used not just or plain troops, but on non-mindless uber units, to make them even more uber.
It's not Mount Chaining, but it is an appropriate and decent effect for those with the patience to use it, IMO.
PvK
Edit: Simply training up new troops to one star essentially makes them elite, and doesn't take very long or cost more gold than maintenance during the time they're training. It can also help impatient players maintain a prudent reserve force... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

About experience being useful. Pit two armies of a hundred units against each other, everything has base attack and defense 10. Now, make the other side experience lvl 3, being 13at, 13def. I'd guess it'd be a massacre:)

It's an astral magic site... where one commander and its units may enter to receive experience.

I seem to remember (back before Dom 2) being told that there was experience for a kill equal to the Size of the victim. I'm not sure if I was misinformed, or if KO changed that at some point, or forgot about it when posting.
