He attacked with a very weak force against a provence with very high defense. Of course he got creamed. That's supposed to be my fault?!
I'm also not sure what happened after that--he kept returning into a provence I controlled and kept dying, turn after turn after turn.

When a pretender is called back by priests it will return to its capital. If you own this capital usually players will be able to kill the pretender again with little difficulty.

Is that province by any chance the capital of his nation?
EDIT: serves me right for having dinner before clicking the submit button :X

Turn after turn suggests his pretender is immortal...

Aren't immortals supposed to die permanently if their home province is under enemy control?

I later figured out it had been his capital. I kept killing him and killing him until finally he ran out of dominion and the remains of his empire died.

Another battle, the same game. This time in the arena.
Yeah, I killed his god. His blind, mute, one-armed god. Just how stupid is the AI to send him into the arena in the first place?
Cant the AI remember what I fielded in the last battle? Or does the AI only look at the fact it was a mere crone without paying attention to the stats? (hp 507. Magic Resistance: 26. Strength 211. Attack 75. Defense 81. The lowest magic path is 11.)

By Chuthulu, how in the nine other dimensions did you get a crone with those stats??? ANYTHING with those stats???

I don't want to meet THAT crone in a dark alley!
Well, to be honest, I don't really want to meet any crone anywhere... oh well

Wishes. Lots and lots of wishes. I've got the pearls and nothing else I need them for.

still, theres a max of 11 wishes there as atleast 1 path is lvl 11 and you can only wish for power once so...

Partially right.
Wishing for magic power tops out. I've got a couple of items on that boost magic beyond that.
I've wished for power many times and watched my stats go up and up. It *IS* cumulative.
Actually, the stats are all but irrelevant, anyway. I'm wearing a wraith crown and the undead have done all the fighting for me.

Since the early stages of Dominions_2 the community has recommended the AI opponents be improved enough to not send its pretender into the arena. It should be relatively easy to fix within a patch since each nation only has one pretender... thus if a unit is marked as a pretender deny the option for the arena.
Perhaps the developers will include this within a patch or sequel. This small fix provides a drastic game improvement for the AI opponents.

I dont think the AI remembers anything about what you've fielded in the past, and might not be able to tell the difference between a dragon and a spy.

I'm pretty sure I've seen the AI adapt its armies (and what the mages cast) to what I'd been scripting, so it looks like the AI does remember something of what happened in previous battles.

Yeah, it would help. It was a combatant pretender, though. It was so crippled that it could hardly do anything, though. No physical attacks and I don't think he cast anything, either.
Incidently, as for the power that can be obtained by wishing for power: My crone is now up to hp: 1157. Strength: 471. Attack: 140. Defence: 146. Precision: 138.
The one thing that annoys me is that cursed "Champion's Trident"--I can't give her a good weapon!

Kill her, call her back, and then wish for the lost paths http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Dominions 2 and all my tests in memory disagree but ill believe you.

Maybe it didn't work in 2. I didn't start playing until 3.
She's now up to hp: 1307. Str: 531. Attack: 155. Defense: 161. Precision: 153. I see no way to wish to increase the other stats.
If it doesn't work, how is she getting stronger? Right now she's doing nothing but sitting off in the corner with a repeat order to cash wish.
