I got the patch, saved the old manuals in an "Old Manuals" folder (as per a recommendation made by Gandalf), ran the patch with no error messages, but when I looked in the doc folder, it was empty.
I ran the patch again, same thing.
Does anybody know where the new mod manuals are? Are they available for download somewhere?

I recall the developers saying the mod manuals were updated... are all operating systems experiencing this issue?

I put the manuals back where they belonged, re-ran the patch, and now they have been patched. All is good. I shot myself in the foot trying to be cautious.

I seem to remember an old game where the game patched itself by accessing the file that needs updating and manualy editing it, instead of the customary "replace with finished improved version" you get nowadays.

I can't get the patch to update my manuals. Can someone post the new updated manuals as an attachment or something?

You can download Linux 'patch'. It's not really a patch, but actually a zip file containing updated files, including manuals. You extract and overwrite them to patch linux install of the game.
