Please note that this is my first multi-player host, so don't expect a smooth ride. Still, I feel confident enough in my ability to get it working in the long run. Ideally the map would be medium-sized and house 5 players, though this is easilly subject to change. I'll pick my nation once everyone else has picked theirs, and will post IP/Port information once I figure out how to select individual ports with AVG.
The current plan is for the game to have magic sites 40, renaming allowed, and a Hall of Fame of 15. NO MODS. (However, I will consider any other suggested changes) There will be a 36-hour auto-host, (If you're allowed to do that. Otherwise, 24-hour.) but don't be pressured to get your turns in quick. It's not a blitz game, really.
Finally, please consider Arena Death Matches to be a matter of honor, a sacred event. Don't think I discourage showing up with weakeners and not at all, though. I know I might. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Geez, that was quick! Space has been added to accomodate players I missed, and I'm still trying to figure out how to open up a port. In a worst-case scenario I'll just bring down the Firewall, but for the time being we still have two who haven't finalized their nations.
I shall play Patala, who I would've picked anyways! Yay!

Sure, llama, what nation do you want? It seems we also have Ermor fighting its (also) evil twin Aquatic Ermor. Will the Ashen Empire's mighty conjurations be able to defeat R'lyeh's recruitables? The suspense is killing me! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
...But this time I'm serious. No more entries. If possible, can you all start uploading pretenders so we can get this show on the road?
EDIT: We also have the issue of roleplaying, I suppose. Any thoughts on it?

I think you have to write a post, then edit it, and when you edit it you have a checkbox which allows you to add an attachment (at least that's how I did it).

Oh, by the way, I'm up for RP, proper diplomacy etc.. I've been playing in the first Newbie game and that's been really good like that. The forum's been pretty entertaining.

Alright, sorry for the late update. I didn't have access to my computer. We still need Reverend Zombie, Catquiet, and Strages Sanctus' pretenders before we start. If they're not heard from within a week, (Yeah, right) we start. It also seems we'll be going RP, which is my choice as well.
Llamabeast has been registered as Pangaea due to his choice of Pretender. Those with starred names on the first post have uploaded pretenders for easy reference.

UPDATE: An issue has appeared. I run Dominions on a laptop, which goes into 'sleep mode' for x minutes if power is turned off. Also to save power, in this mode the internet connection is brought down. It shouldn't be too hard to solve, but I suppose we'll see. If anyone has advice, I'm all ears.

Dammit, Catquiet! Stop being so skimpy with new posts! You're making it hard to find! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
With this almost all pretenders are accounted for, and we can start once I fix my laptop not to 'sleep' and turn off the internet. I'll update again once progress has been made, but help is still appreciated. If Strages Sanctus doesn't upload by the time I'm done I'll remind him via PM, but won't bother him in the meantime. I still don't know if this will work.
EDIT: I might have a fix. I'll post again when it can be seen whether it worked or not.

What do you mean it goes into sleep mode if power is turned off? Can you not just avoid turning it off in that case?
If you mean it goes asleep if you just leave it for a while (which I think is the normal power-saving feature), I think you can control power-saving features in Control Panel.
I found some instructions:
- Go to Control Panel
- Make sure you're in "category view"
- Click "performance and maintenance", then "power options"
- Fix the options
Hope that helps, and I didn't get the wrong end of the stick.

December 12th, 2006, 11:59 AM
Really? Power options is right in the Control Panel open, for me.
Thanks very much for the advice, though. I'll try it now.
llamabeast
December 12th, 2006, 12:04 PM
Oh yes, d'oh! Well you could also get to it by changing to "Category View" etc. if you wanted to pass the time. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
I think you have to set "System standby" to "Never" if I was understanding correctly.

We've got trouble. My computer says Shovah/R'lyeh's .zip file doesn't actually contain anything. Can you possibly re-upload? We can start as soon as it's re-uploaded, or at noon EST tomorrow if Shovah doesn't make it.

Alright everyone, sorry for the delay. The house's other computer is down, and everyone needed to use this one. All pretenders have been recieved, however, and the game's just started up. The IP address is 10.156.24.101, and the port is 1113. Here's hoping this works, and good luck once again.
It says it's waiting for participants, so sign on up. I'm still new at this.
EDIT: Fixed the port number.

No luck for me, I couldn't connect.

Uh, I'm having some brief issues. I first tried just setting up a network, then realized I should start a game first. Then I screwed up three times (yes, I know) forgetting to put the 'host' game in windowed mode. Yeah, I'm dumb. It should work now if you give me a minute or two.
Edit. I also typed one too many 1s in my previous post. It's, in reality, 1113. I thought I would be a bit more competent than this... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Oh no, I was really looking forward to this one! Surely we can overcome technical issues? If there's a computer and an internet connection it must be doable.
Have you checked port forwarding on your router? By default routers block almost all ports. This is a separate thing from firewalls, so the signal never gets to your computer even if your firewall is off.
If your router is anything like my old one, you have to go to 192.168.0.1 in internet explorer to access it's setup page, then look for the "port forwarding" option. Sorry if you already know all this.

Actually, that's new to me. At any rate, these computers have tight security for a reason, (You should have seen the time we had setting up Xbox Live. The Wii still doesn't work online.) and I probably shouldn't go messing with it. Besides, this isn't even the master computer.
Again, I'm really sorry. I was looking forward to this one too, and it probably would've been the first in many more to come. I really don't want to give up hosting, but I'm thinking there's no real choice. If anything comes up, I'll be sure to share it...

December 14th, 2006, 07:26 AM
Well okay, it is a pity. You could just have a look at your router page, it's actually generally very self-explanatory, and as I understand it opening an arbitrary port doesn't represent a security risk at all (you already have quite a few open ports, e.g. one for the internet, one for e-mail). But no worries if you're not comfortable with it.
I wish I could host, but my computer's by my bed and ridiculously loud, so I could never leave it on all the time.

It's not that I'm uncomfortable with this, but my father works out of home and has important files. That's the main reason. If it doesn't pose a security risk, I should be able to petition to open one up. Many thanks, I'll post if there's anything to post about.
