View Full Version : 10-player EA game - started

As per a request from LlamaBeast:
No I do not generally take requests for hosting special games, but I will accept suggestions for a new default game. That way I can script it so that its easy to start one, and easy to clean up.

SO.....
Here is a mid-sized map which can support 10 players. You might squeeze in a few more but if it crashes on start then oh well. I wont clean it up but I will just kick the script to start another mid game. This is on the minor server so I only plan to start one of these at a time.

Era 1
game mid_spruit
server game.dom3minions.com
port 8098

I don't think I saw the original context, Gandalf - should people who want to play just join the game?

Is there anything unusual about it?

Cerlin
December 19th, 2006, 03:55 PM
If there isnt I'd give this game a go myself http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif Your servers rock btw...

Gandalf Parker
December 19th, 2006, 04:31 PM
I dont usually "run" games. I just make them available on my server. So if someone wants to spear head this one, go for it. Its there. I might not poke my head in here much so someone take lead. Round up players, iron out conflicts, decide when to start it, contact me if something goes wrong.

Nothing unusual. Well the map is abit. Here is its image.
http://game.dom3minions.com/mid_4.jpg

Here is the command line for it.
dom3 -g mid_spruit --port 8098 -STd --statfile --scoredump
--preexec /home/dom3/dominions3/savedgames/mid_spruit/pre.sh
--postexec /home/dom3/dominions3/savedgames/mid_spruit/post.sh
--era 1 --indepstr 5 --hofsize 10 --magicsites 65 --uploadmaxp 10 --renaming --mapfile mid_4.map
--masterpass @@@@@@@ -q --hours 24

ooops it looks like I did cap it at 10 players so hurry and get your nations. Later on I might setup a webdir for it and have the scoreboard and stats file go there automatically.

Now Im off to take action against a brute force attack against the system. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Edited - got rid of earlier post, instead here's the final player listing:

Sauromatia - llamabeast
Agartha - Cerlin
Lanka - Shovah32

I gave it a go! Im agartha (again) because I like them, especially on big maps! I look at our smaller game as practice for ones like this. Look forward to playing with you again if you do it.

Im in as lanka.

ps: Gandalf im guessing you put those @'s in to block out the masterpassword?

Gandalf Parker
December 19th, 2006, 07:45 PM
Yes, I always include a master password in case someone stops sending files and the other players want that person set to computer player instead of just sitting idle for someone to take. Be aware that its a one-way trip. A person cannot be set to AI temporarily and then changed back.

And the game will automatically start at 10 players. I left the start-button in place in case you all decided to start at it at fewer players.

Oh okay I give in, I'll play. After being desperate to get into a game for so long, I can't just sit and watch the forum for a game with free slots! Man, three games at once! Hope I don't go crazy.

I'll be Sauromatia. Also a bit like Pythium I guess. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Gandalf, do you think it would be a good idea for me to start a new thread, so I can change the title etc., put player listings in the first post etc.? If so, can this thread be deleted, or do we just let it drift into obscurity?

Is R'lyeh planning to stale while his capital is being sieged? If so, set him to computer control?

Agartha is also looking to stale - maybe we should switch to a 36 hour host interval so people have a little more wiggle room?

The prophet of Knife Bright Insight, Iron Lord of the Jotun, speaks the decree of the True God: that the inexecrable cult of Nur Manthu, practiced amongst the degenerate Vanir, must be expunged from the world.

Lest We be thought unjust, we proclaim the 7 vile practices, which designate the nation and cult of Nur Manthu for destruction, in accordance with natural law:

1. Sophistry. The Van are an intrinsically deceitful race, ever cloaked in lies and falsehood. Their nature is so despicable that, if were did not act to destroy their unnatural and false God, they might justify any act of vileness through their twisted logic.

2. Pederasty. The unnatural love between man and boy child, which is the cornerstone of the cult of Nur Manthu and of the transfer of warrior practices between the Van, is an abomination to the True God, whose purview is the fertile power of the pure earth.

3. Incontinence. A physical side effect of the unnatural practices mentioned in point 2. The soiling of the body is a consequence of the degeneracy of the mind, and it is thus doubly offensive to the True God.

4. Cannibalism. Those young boys whom the Van do not use to fulfill one unnatural appetite are designated for another. The natural order of the world describes that the greater should feast upon the lesser, thus the Jotun feast upon men and the men feast upon their defeated foes, or the beasts of the field. For any thing to consume the raw flesh of the young of his own kind, particularly the reproductive organs, is despicable above all other practices.

5. Sacrifice. The cult of Nur Manthu practices blood sacrifice in a fashion that is in accord with neither the heavenly bodies, nor the natural cycles of life and death. The Gygja proclaim these practices Anathema, and a threat to the natural order which must be ended at any cost.

6. Barbarism. The Van have foully murdered several Augur Elder of the empire of Ermor - men of wisdom and learning seeking only to spread the benefits of civilization among the ungrateful and intractable savages. For leading his degenerate worshippers into the crime of murdering these well intentioned scholars, and their legionaire bodyguards - who displayed courage far beyond their humble physical stature - Nur Manthu itself must be expunged from the world and bound forever in darkness.

7. Weakness. Also a consequence of the emasculating practice of pederasty: the Van are weak, like little girls, not only in flesh but in spirit. Such weakness cries out for retribution.

Thus Knife Bright Insight, who is the True God, decrees, and thus shall it be!

The end of times comes soon for our people. We can blame no one but ourselves for this. Our early scouts were over zealous and erroneously attempted to take control of undefended provinces.
Although we could do nothing about the demon nation that decided to take our provinces by force. The many armed being that dances through our lands wreaking havoc is but another deathknell for us.
To awaken this morn to find that almost the entire population of our capitol was taken by some strange force and turned into plant beings was a dire omen indeed.
We will not be long in this world, but we are making efforts to ensure our death has a ripple effects that cames back upon those who threw the stones in our pond.

OOC: Been fun! but it won't be long for me now. Hope to do it again with a little more success next time.

P.S. - your cooperation and lack of selfishness disgusts me! I am forced to pull back by the combined might of Agartha and Sauromatia, plus Caelum also has a lot of little girls with wings in robes. We will have our vengeance, however, do not doubt it!

Maltrease
January 19th, 2007, 01:31 PM
Actually we are acting selfishly. A wise man once said

"It is healthy and natural for people to gang uo on weaker or stronger opponents. As the Hitler-Stalin example illustrates, this is the sort of thing different religions, even if they completely hate one another by dogma, would do for their own self interest."

The mightly Neifelheim empire split up 3-5 ways will benefit all of use "real" gods.

I'm just glad you don't have that high of a dominion. I shudder to think about those giants with 120HP regenerating 30 per turn with your gift of health.

At least you are being a good sport about it... its hard to be #1 and watch your empire crumble beneath you. Happened to me enough times http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

[of course I should my toungue... as your defeat is far from a sure thing at the present time]

I think Gandalf will have to set Mictan to AI... but it would be far far easier if Mictan would set himself to AI. It is a "Become computer controlled" choice under the options button.

Argh! I had meant to fling all three of those murdering winters at that Sauromatian army (the damage stacks). Ah well, I got a bunch of Agarthans, and I probably would've lost that fight anyway.

So - I can't fight all four of you at once. Specifically, I need either - Sauromatia *and* Agartha to back off, or for Sauromatia *or* Agartha to switch sides and ally with me. So, here's the deal - if one or the other of you will break your current alliance and ally with me, I will direct my eight remaining murdering winters at the other, just for starters.

If neither Agartha or Sauromatia will agree to ally with me, I will split the murdering winters 50:50 (and manage them a bit better, to boot) and give all of my remaining magic items and gems to Caelum. For those keeping score at home - that's 307A, 55E, 153S, 177D, 39N and 258B, twenty skull mentors, some nature and earth boost items, and that thug equipment on my eastern cadre of niefel giants.

Ermor, Vanheim and Caelum - whom I wish to crush completely - need not apply.

For the record, although it is to your advantage to ally against a stronger foe, it is also to your advantage to jockey with position among yourselves, and to try and get one of the other players to take the brunt of my counterattack. Your lack of cowardice disgusts me.

I salute Ermor for his judicious betrayal and will deal with him with the respect he deserves http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif.

Tyrant

DrPraetorious

It was definitely more than two turns. He missed the last two at least, (Three if I recall right) took two, and missed at least four before that.

Evilhomer
February 1st, 2007, 02:13 PM
I may have unintentionally crashed the game.

UninspiredName

I've already downloaded the new patch, (and did my turn just like Evilhomer. Whoops...) so it might be better if you set me to AI.

llamabeast
February 1st, 2007, 05:06 PM
Okay, I've PMed Gandalf to ask him to restart it.

Going AI's a bit extreme! If this game does end up staying on 3.04, the best thing to do is just do another install of Dominions (you can have multiple on a machine), and only patch up to 3.04 (someone's uploaded the 3.04 patch again on the main forum, I can find it if you want).

It'd be useful if people check back here often-ish to check the status of the game, e.g. if it's been restarted, whether to patch.

llamabeast
February 1st, 2007, 06:14 PM
Okay guys, Gandalf's got it fixed. Uninspired - your turn was fine, oddly. EvilHomer - can you take your turn again, using 3.04? Shouldn't be too hard to do a quick extra install and patch.

And Cerlin - are you alive? You get an extra chance to take this turn now because the timer's been reset.

UninspiredName
February 1st, 2007, 06:24 PM
Eh, installing a second version of Dominions is too troublesome for my tastes. At any rate, since my turn's fine, and I connect just fine a few minutes ago, (Nice to have an explanation for the reset timer as well) I should be able to stay in the game for the time being.

Maltrease
February 1st, 2007, 06:45 PM
you don't need a whole new install. Only the dominions.exe file needs to the be the right version.

So copy Dominions.exe and name it Dominions304.exe, then install the patch. Then you can open up either version depending on the EXE you use.

Evilhomer
February 1st, 2007, 06:50 PM

llamabeast
February 1st, 2007, 08:49 PM
You can get V3.04 from

http://rapidshare.com/files/14416405/dompatch304.exe.html

as was kindly provided by someone on the main forum. I've also cunningly downloaded it, so if you have a problem with that (slightly messy but not too bad) site I can e-mail it to you.

Similarly I can e-mail you the V3.04 exe if you want, but I'm slightly dubious about that - surely the other files must be different too, and that must have some effects? Maybe nothing important though.

Uninspired, similarly I can e-mail you the 3.04 exe if you want. Just send me a PM.

It works! Gandalf I love you!

Okay everyone, the game is back up! As Gandalf says above, 63.199.8.158, port 8098, version still 3.04.

On another note, how would people feel about asking Gandalf to change to a 36 hour host, if he wouldn't mind? For me 24 hours is still fine, but I wonder if it might be getting a bit short for some people.

Maltrease
February 5th, 2007, 08:06 PM
Thanks for putting the game back Gandalf... and thanks llmama for keeping an eye on it!

I am totally fine with a 36 hour (or longer turn time).

llamabeast
February 6th, 2007, 09:08 PM
Okay, another update.

The server died again unfortunately due to another patch clash. So, we have another 36 hours, in which hopefully EvilHomer and Uninspired can have their turns, and hopefully we can find a sub for Agartha.

Gandalf's going to set the game to quit after this turn, transfer the game back to the original server, update to 3.06 and start it going again. So then finally, 36 hours from now, we'll have the game running on 3.06. So Uninspired and EvilHomer, if you really can't get 3.04 working, you'll only stale one turn and then we'll be back in business.

Please be careful not to log into the current server with 3.06 though, I'd be a bit embarrassed to ask Gandalf to restart it again and anyway it'd be good if we could get this turn processed.

and uploaded a 3.06 turn. I noticed it and uploaded a 3.04, so hopefuly it just overwrote and there won't be any damage, but my apologies in advance if it crashes the server.

Seems like it's fine, it normally crashes it immediately when the wrong-version turn file is received, so seems like we got away with it.

It still works fine for me. Have you checked you're using the new IP address?

Evilhomer

yeah - doesn't work

llamabeast
February 8th, 2007, 08:28 AM
It doesn't work now because the 36 hours is up, so Gandalf's transferring it to the repaired server, where it'll run on 3.06. After that we should be all back to normal.

Game is back up - old ip address
"C:\Program Files\dominions3\dom304.exe" --tcpclient --ipadr 63.199.8.157 --port 8098 --nonationsel

Although... I guess we should be using the 3.06 version now? Mine was submitted with 3.04 again.

Yep, Gandalf says it's running 3.06 now.

Hey, would someone mind uploading the map file? I'm playing on a different computer, and for some reason it gives me an error message instead of downloading the map file from the server. Thanks!

No worries about the map file, I got it sorted.

What do people think about maybe changing the host timing to 36 hours again, if Gandalf would do it for us?

GameExtremist
February 20th, 2007, 07:23 AM
I'm happy with the 24 hour turn length...has any one been stalling?

great game btw....Neifel is a bloody thorn in my side....and um wow Caelum has done a lot of research...what are the Victory OB's for this game?

llamabeast
February 20th, 2007, 03:07 PM
Glad you're enjoying it! You really got chucked in at the deep end, so I'm glad you're having fun with it.

Niefelheim's been a thorn in everyone's side, it's amazing the fight he's put up with almost no-one left. He's also been an excellent sport (thanks, Dr P!), given that at one point he looked certain to win and everyone turned on him.

As for Caelum's research, it's terrifying. I've done more research in this game than I have in any game before (even SP), and it's scary how powerful some of the later spells are. I dread to think what Caelum can do. Happily he seems very nice. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

There are no victory objectives at the moment. Anyone want to suggest some?

As for the timer, I don't think people have been staling at all in general, except today I think Ermor and Niefelheim both staled, and maybe Vanheim. Maybe Tuesday's a bad day for dominions. I'm happy with the 24 hour timer but it takes me the best part of an hour a day now, so I wouldn't be surprised if some people wanted it slower.

DrPraetorious
February 20th, 2007, 03:59 PM
I got a weird message that the timestamp on my file was too old - I didn't think I'd staled!

Not that it matters, much.

Maltrease
February 20th, 2007, 07:07 PM
Dr. P has been a great sport! Thank you!

Being nice is getting dull... so I'm given Vanheim notice to end our NAP.

This is the only Dom game I'm in at the moment after our host disappeared in my other (just getting ready to get exciting) game. I'm ok with the 24 hour time... but would prefer 48 hours. Particurarly if I am engaged in more conflict... which takes considerably longer to manage.

I can't connect to the server

llamabeast

Looks like it was down a bit yesterday, it's fixed now (6 hours to go).

llamabeast
February 25th, 2007, 10:50 PM
So, I'm not quite sure what to do about extending the quick host time. For the moment I personally am happy enough with it on 24 hours, but at the same time it's reaching the stage of the game where 24 hours is really a bit crazy. I think having everyone able to take their turns properly is much more important now than having the turns go fast.

So, what I'd suggest is that as soon as someone begins to feel that it's going too fast, just say and I'll message Gandalf straight away and ask him to extend it. If that's already the case, I'll do it straight away! Personally I'm probably slightly more in favour of 36 hours than 48, but that's because I have a lot of free time in the evenings at the moment. If 48 hours is needed for people to feel they have enough time - even just one person - I think we should probably go 48 hours rather than have someone feel they can't play properly.

Maltrease
February 26th, 2007, 05:28 PM
I would like 48 hours. But even 36 would be better then the current 24.

48 hours - done! Hope that's okay with everyone.

So Dr. P, now that you've finally been banished (and boy did that take some effort!) I wonder if you can tell us the grand tale of the rise and fall of your Empire. I don't know if any of us really knew the full story - I know I didn't. I could only see one small corner of your empire, and never knew its full extent. What happened to all your giants? I have no idea if I killed most of them, or only a small fraction.

Great playing with you, anyway. And you were a very good sport indeed when we all ganged up on you.

A proclamation from Agartha -

After a combined moot of Krinonistor - God of the Agartha, Deepthought - Great Ulm and Prophet of the Agartha and Tanit Ancient Fire Sage of the Subterranean Order of Fire and Greatest Hero to walk the lands.

Has found the Nation of Caelum and it's pretender to be to great a threat to the continued existence of the Agarthan peoples - Hence the Non-Agression Pact declared many earth cycles ago has been broken. To the Agarthan's knowledge no clause was ever mentioned about a period of time before open war can be entered into and hence - Agartha declares war against the peoples of Caelum.

http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif... I was wondering why the attack felt a little light. I'm sorry to hear that.

Actually... that is awful. I'm sure you spent a tremendous amount of time on the turn.

Actually I should reveal that I have a secret alliance with the Amazons and we are going to team up and destroy the Argathian beasts. We were just waiting for them to expose themselves. Ya... ha ha.. some ally you think you have.

My clever form of dece... honestly will undo your alliance... which uhhh doesn't even exists!

Hey guys,

I wonder if we should declare some time limit on this game, like 5 or 10 more turns. I'm happy to keep playing properly as long as you two want to, but I also think the outcome is increasingly clear. I'll do what I can to stop Caelum's hordes, but there's not much more hope any more I fear...

I'm really pleased with how I played the early and mid game in this game. My late game, though, has been terrible - my excuse being that I've never got to late game before, so I'm effectively a newbie. I was hoping that mass castings of remote strike spells would be sufficient, but really they're just gnats. It seems that Tartarians and the like are the way to go.

I do find the late game very odd. Armies kind of feel pointless - even Caelum's largest armies I think I could wipe out with a concentrated attack of Ghost Riders, with half the commanders killed first by Infernal Disease or Earth Attack. Given that, I don't really feel inclined to build armies up myself, so I'm not really sure what to do.

Anyway, like I say, I'm happy to keep playing, but I think it's likely I'll also be happy to concede fairly soon.

GameExtremist
April 6th, 2007, 10:07 AM
Heh,

I know the feeling, I had hoped my large armies of Ancient ones would have made a better accounting for themselves....its not so much that SC's are unbalanced...its just that Caelum has armies of SC's!!! (compared to Agartha anyway ; ) )

I'd like to keep going for now, Sure I'm in for an *** whooping but I'll take that with me to other games I will play in the future.

I'd say Agartha will be washed up in 10 turns or so...

llamabeast

The war continues then...

Maltrease
April 6th, 2007, 08:45 PM
The end game can rapidly become tedius as you have so much to manage. I thought your last round was excelelent how you annihilated my army of 3 army of devils. I thought they would have faired better vs ghost riders.

I will admit that unless you guys have something hidden up your sleave I will likely win due to a huge economic advantage. That Nexis is POURING in the gems... sometimes producing more then all my sites combined.

While I think there is some fun to be had in the end game I am open to being declared the victor... if only for the huge amount of time it will save. I'm also open to keep playing... so I can try out some things.

I will agree at this point that any army that can't stand up to ghost riders is going to be pointless. Which does lead itself to thugs and SC's cause I can't think of any normal troops that wouldn't at least take losses greater then casting of the ghost riders.

Well I am quite happy to concede, there is no way I can put a dint in Caelum's forces, Well played Maltrese!

My only regret is that I didn't play the game from the start! (shameless attempt to shift blame of losing away from self http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif )

But..but..but I was just about to launch Plan Z. Having lulled the surface world into a false sence of security it was not time to launch my Ultimite Strike! (ahem)

Seriously though, good game guys! I greatly enjoyed our war Llama, an excellent course in underwater combat, and you are a good sport and a fun guy to play with.

That was very impressive Malt! I could not see the details well from my small lake, but i have never seen anything on the score graphs like the blitzkriegs that you demonstrated trice. Very impressive indeed!

Also, props to TDNP for both playing it out against the dog-pile and being a good sport about it, few players wouold have done that. Thanks to GM for subbing as well, subs always get glory points in my book. Last but not least, thanks for hosting Gandalf, your peerless contributions to the D3 community are greatly appreciated.

All hail Maltrease, Bestower of Good Gifts (like Robes of the Magi!), Master of Magic, and One True God of Spruit!

I told you you would never get me out of my lake! I proudly claim fourth place!

As far as I noticed, Wrath of the Sea didn't do anything. I didn't feel crippled by it, in any case.

I now have the ftherlnd file, plus score graphs and stuff, if anyone wants them.

Also, I looked up the word "spruit". Apparently it means (in southern africa) 'a small stream'. So there we are.
