View Full Version : Wrath of Opposing Fates (WOOF) - Wraithlord Wins!

PashaDawg
January 2nd, 2007, 11:40 PM
This PBEM game will be played on the map "Dawn of Dominions" which came with the latest patch.

The settings will be:

12 players (Early Era):

Ermor - djo
Marverni - Boron
Arco - Jurri
Sauromatia - Pashadawg
Vanheim - Ewierl
Oceania - Meglobob
Agartha - Ygorl
C'tis - Rev. Zombie
Kailasa - Cainehill
Ulm - Bluebird
Caelum - Wraithlord
Helheim - Migaaresno

Victory condition: There will be 12 VP provinces (one in each player's capital; non-cumulative), and a player must control 5 to win the game.
Research: Easy
Graphs on.
Renaming on.
Indies: 5.
No mods.

One problem is that the scenario does not give the host a chance to change these settings, so we will need to edit the file. Does anybody know how to do that already? I can figure it out, but it would take some learning!

The turn schedule would be as follows (PBEM):
Turns 1 - 14 would be hosted daily
Turns 15 and after would be hosted 3 times per week: Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday.

I plan to start the game on SUNDAY. Players, please send me your pretenders (remember no mods).

Thanks.

The newest Version of Worthy heroes should work with macs, I removed all the #clear commands, which seemed to cause the buggy behaviour.

If someone drops out, I´d happily take his place.

I will try out the latest Worthy Heroes Mod to see if my Mac can take it's heat.

For what it is worth, there is the following waiting list of possible players: djo, Mind Elemental, Dragonfire11, and Turin. (The map limits the game to 12 players.)

I didn't realize that there were different officially-determined difficulty levels... Or that I'm starting right next to Jurri (again!)
Well, at least I'm easier than he is. Of course, if he whomps me, I have to feel especially bad!

PashaDawg
January 3rd, 2007, 03:44 PM
I think you can disregard the officially determined difficulty levels. I don't see why Caelum's starting location is so difficult. It seems to me that Ulm and Marverni will have a harder time. Ermor also might feel squashed in the middle.

How lucky for us all that you'll once again be holding Jurri in check! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/egg.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/egg.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/egg.gif

Jurri
January 3rd, 2007, 03:46 PM
Hah, the scenario-designer must have been high when listing the difficulties... I mean, the 'SUPER HARD' Caelum starts with 3 provinces! Being Caelum, that won't even slow down the start of his initial expansion by a turn as it would any other nation (since the army can just fly over the provinces). So I rather think either the difficulties indicate how easy it is to fight against said nation instead of how hard the position is, or just generally lack in reasoning http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif (It is definitely not a big negative to only have 2 neighboring provinces, especially for Caelum who wants to build more forts quickly anyways and doesn't need resources all that much in the long run.)

I tried removing the #scenario-tag from the .map-file, and it restored the settings while retaining the special start locations; dunno if it has any other effects, though.

(I don't think CB's Pretenders- or Scales-portions use #clear either, so it should be a piece of cake to hack together a mac-friendly version of those, if there was a need.)

Jurri:

If I remember correctly, Jason Lutes used 'number of neighbours' (or was it 'number of indy provinces adjacent to capital'?) to determine difficulty.

Meglobob
January 3rd, 2007, 08:09 PM
I think Oceania deserves the 'easy' classification. No other water nation, means Oceania would be extremely difficult to defeat. So you have a very safe position, however expanding on land will be difficult as your blessed troops are underwater only.

Is there no restriction on bless strategy in this game?

Also, I am unfamilar with the cave provinces on this map. Any unusual rules about them that I should know about?

Ouch. Well, the Vanir are far from gone, but it's going to be hard to catch up from a kick so early and intensely unlucky. These are the ways a multiplayer-newbie learns, I suppose, but it's a pain to get knocked out of the running so early.

NEWS FLASH!

In a daring move for the benefit of the whole world, Pasha Babe has rallied the Sauromatian Nation to strike the Surely Too Evil Villainous Ermor (STEVE) before Graknor can further steer STEVE toward his stink-ball plans.

"A lot went into this decision," announced Pasha Babe at this morning's press conference. "It was only after a lot of thought, listening to Sauromatia's Witch Kings, and flaying a great many slaves, that I committed Sauromatia to the next step in its inevitable glory for the benefit of the whole world! Just look how STEVE wastes their grasslands! I have a 3-point plan that will..." <massive cheers drown out rest of speech after which 5 Ermorian "spies" are flayed before the whooting crowd>

Stay tuned for all the glorious news as our imbedded reporters keep you informed of the latest.

This is all propaganda. I lost no spies. I have in my possession the sworn testimony of no less than seventeen witnesses attesting that the so-called "spies" flayed in a pitiful attempt to rally the Sauromation public were, in fact, large stuffed animals stolen from the concessions booth of a local carnival.

NEWS FLASH!

Pasha Babe's brave minions have uncovered yet another example of Graknor's use of lies and misconstruction to further his creepy plans.

The valiant freedom fighters of Sauromatia have uncovered 12 sweat shops in a slum just inside Sauromatia's homeland full of kidnapped Arcocephalean children sewing horrid stuffed flay-me-slave-dolls.

Unfortunately, the sweat-bosses cowardly teleported away when their shops were raided. But all the sewing tools were manufactured in Ermor, and all of the bosses were wearing purple!

Several documents in Ermorian secret code were found in the shops. One such document has been partially decoded to reveal the following damning evidence of Graknor's malignancy:

^&*&%$ (*%$^ MAKE THE CHILDREN *$$ DOLLS THAT WILL *&*&# THE FOOLS #*$(Q#*ER #$#*@*# #*$ !)#$&@@* @)#($ ... unreadable ... @@#$& ##$ DISTRACTION ... unreadable ... @$#($# THEN *# WILL STRIKE #U@@#OPI.

Pasha Babe continues to lead the preemptive strikes in the War of Ermorian Aggression. Onward!

NEWS FLASH!

His Wyrmship, Graknor, the Squiggle Pretender of Ermor, has finally fluffed himself big and proud and ventured out of his keep with a band of tarted-up mercenaries brandishing big, fancy pikes. The first item on his to do list was to eat some poor innocent independent freedom lovers.

"Bah! We aren't too worried about the Squiggle, but we are keeping our eyes on him," said Nalaprezzor, 3rd Vice Witch Prince and Stamp Licker, for the Witch Kingdom of Sauromatia. "We suspect that he'll venture into Arcoscephalae next to munch on some children. Meanwhile, we are smearing our kids with the dung of the Whoo-Hoo Bear, so they won't taste good. You just can't be too careful!"

It symbolises the path of life, the suffering of life and the pleasures of life. The priest must make an act of Gorgsme to show there dedication to there religion. The religions rituals are shrouded in mysteries and any word about it in public is blasphemy. The everyday life of a Gorgischme believer must pay homage to there god by donating a bottle of beer to there local church. The more beer and delicious the beer is, the more prosperous there life will be. At the end of the month, the priest will sacrifice parts of the beer and sent the best beer to the capital witch will be part of some unknown ritual to reawaken the god. The religion view any non-beer users as weak low-lives. The only solution for them is to adapt to thise religion or to be annihilated /threads/images/Graemlins/Dagger.gif.

Helheims, hells angels have been very, very busy...they have defeated Vanheim (almost, trapped in his castle), helped finish Marverni and driven me back to the sea...

But on the plus side my 200+ strong army killed 1 or 2 of his glamoured units before being utterly slaughtered. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

And here you are, begging for mercy to a greater power, but nobody answered. Your foolish religion is going down whit your history. Your religion may be lost, but your nation may still be saved. Hellheim is willing to sweep
your lands from the other evils who only seek plunder and lots of wenches. If you are willing to do the Act of Tjapat we can help you. This is a Oath witch binds you to the following things:

1. You will become a subordinate to the Hellheim’s Church.

2. You will protect The Holy Church (Hellheim’s Church)and even sacrifice yourself and your nation if it’s necessary to the survival of The Holy Church.

3. Your entire nation, military, priest and druids must alter the current religion to Gorgischme.:B

4. You must obey every command from The Drunken ones, even if it means killing your own kin. You will obey without hesitation and without questions.

5. You must burn all wine chambers
/threads/images/Graemlins/icon38.gif/threads/images/Graemlins/icon38.gif
/threads/images/Graemlins/Campfire.gif/threads/images/Graemlins/Campfire.gif

((A Little more about the world of Gorgischme))

The Church has other names for certain things. People whit this religion must use these names. Other nations show disrespect if they don’t use these names.

You will call the prophet of Hellheim: Master (since he is level 3 priest he is called master Lechiek)
You will call the nation of Hellheim: Chosen nation.
You will call the Church o Hellheim: The Holy Church or The
Truth.
You will call the Vanir: The Drunken ones or The pure ones.
You will call being who defiled themselves by drinking only impure beer: Unclean ones or weak ones.
Being who drunken impure and pure beer: Defiled.
The religion has a special kind of blood beer. By performing an ancient mostly outlawed ritual they can merge pure blood of suitable virgins whit other pure beer to achieve the most holy of beers. This beer is used by the Dokus Shamenlijk in a mysterious ritual.
A priest level 1 is called a Shamenlijk.
A priest level 2 is called a Dokus Shamenlijk.
A priest level 3 is called a Lechiek.
A priest level 4 is called a Dokus Lechiek.

NEWSFLASH!

Ulmisch troops march up to the northern lands and raid the sacred temples. The drunken ones have not yet responded but proclaimed to crush the entire invading army if they go on whit burning churches down. Meanwhile Hellheim has dispatched its own raiding party in Ulmish territory.

The Truth is proud to announce it’s the biggest religion in the world. Never ever has a religion been so popular. The huge amounts of prayers, supporters and beer brewers serving The Holy Church must be a truth sign that this is the greatest religion of them all. It’s a matter of time before the others will abandon there false faith.

Critics against the faith claim its bad for your health and mind to do all the rituals witch involve the religion. They say people become clumsier, dumper and a bit more revolting. There are already numerous reports of barbarians who adapted to the religion to try taking over a country.

While the drunken ones admit there R&D to ancient spells is not that great, they say there lands are the most wealthiest and no other nation can afford the amount of money spend on religion.

This was Fonirumes from NHN (Northern Hemisphere News).

The first number is for the ftherlnd file, which you don't possess since you're not the host, so it shows turn number 0 for you. The turn number after your nations name is the turn number for your *.trn file, there is a number behind it: "2h #" which is the turn number for the *.2h file. If you don't have one or deleted it, then it shows -1.

Nothing to worry about at all, it's all like it should.

The hyper core of the hard-drive random output generator is broken. I tried to fix it whit a deprecator. It started working again, but due to the high frequencies shocks it caused another malfunction. The Supersonic mid-way high powered dial up modem is fried. In my last attempt I re-routed all power from the flux generator via the backup power lines to the Auxiliary quantum reactor chamber witch now functions as dial up modem. However these is only a temporal solution. Within the next quantum flux cycle it will be broken too. Does somebody know where I can buy a spare hyper core for the hard drive random output generator?

Ulmisch faith dwindles as there so called "God" dies in front of the massagers of death along whit its army, the remainders of the army are now stranded in hostile ground cut of from there homeland. It don’t takes a sage to imprint this foolish action as certain doom for there nation.

Bishop Fishes desperately try to prevent The Truth from spreading to the population undersea. But recently they have been failing in there duties.

Sauromatia has been accused of illegal blood beer production. Scouts from Hellheim have reported a GIGANTIC cauldron heavenly guarded. Slave transports have been sighted coming and going to it. The drunken ones have demanded the destruction of the cauldron and a fine of 699 gold pieces (or 40 virgins).

The dwarves of Hellheim are almost ready to produce a steady line of top quality equipment while magical sacred fighters are trained in the temples. Within a few months the militaristic potential will be doubled, if not tripled.

A long and debilitating fight with Jurri and his cursed Awesome Wyrm (I was so close to the coup de grace, though he'll tell you otherwise http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif) interrupted by a rather quick squishing at the hands of an unholy Caelum/C'tis alliance (though it was Caelum who did all the actual squishing, C'tis just made sure I couldn't attempt to countersquish). Don't let them catch you with your pants down, folks!

And thank you Ygorl for putting such a tenacious fight, I'm sure had your original position been stronger things would have gone differently for me. BTW, IMHO it was Jurri who actually did you. I was just moving in and out of battles and letting you kill each other playing the role of the scavenger.

Jurri is always obnoxiously tough, why I still remember the trouble he gave me as Man in RAND2, I think he's the main reason I wasn't ready in time to prevent Machaka from winning. Jurri
April 21st, 2007, 02:13 AM
That does not appear to be the case; your army is safe and sound in #39, is it not? That, or you have two identically named Eagle Kings in the area. Furthermore, your army does not rout from the battle from what I can see, as it shouldn't: first, the attacker routs at turn 50, and only after some amount of turns have passed the defender routs. Then, again after some set amount of turns, if there are still units on the battlefield, they will all die.

In this case, only the attacker (me) routs, and what results is buggy behavior: a mindless commander is not supposed to not be affected by routing under any circumstances whatsoever. Yet it does, and being mindless, does not actually retreat, but dies gruesomely.

WraithLord
April 21st, 2007, 04:56 AM
I double checked about my army and you're right. Sorry, my bad, since I only got a glimpse of turn last night and thought my army has indeed routed.

I also didn't know about the attacker routing first rule.

So what has happened does indeed seem like a bug, I think we should report it.

This month Helheim conquered its 3rd capital from brave Ulmish warriors bringing it level with Caelum in the race to be the one true god.

The merfolk fear for our Ulmish friends and the world. Ulm nears dominion death and is losing armies fast, with no help which will destroy Ulm first?

This means Helheim will soon have 4 capitals as Ulm controlled both his own and Marverni's capital. 1 capital away from victory...how hard will it be for the finest stealthy troops in the world to mount a surprise attack and aquire that 5th capital?

It is time to act against Helheim if you are capable of doing so. Oceania has been at war with helheim for a long time now and recently has had some victories but I believe this is because the vanir massed there forces against Ulm. Oceania cannot do it alone and should Ulm fall it would not surprise me if I was swept back into the sea for a 3rd time...

NEWSFLASH!!

After months of fighting, picking lands, giving lands and dividing forces the Drunken once have once again prevailed whit the help of some defiled Jade Maidens.

Ulm's fortress has been stomped in the ground, nothing remains. And the resurrected god has been defeated once again, now for eternity. The invincible Steel warriors will never walk the earth again. The last few High Shamans of the sacred tree flee to the last few remaining forts.

But it has come at a great price, hundreds of Civilians have died. Millions and millions of litter’s beer are destroyed, lost end consumed. Helheim capital suffers from insufficient workforce. Tax income has suffered severely due to the unrest the wars have created. The Oceania troops have invaded the mainland and the first fort has fallen. The dwarves have returned beneath the mountain in Helheim, secretly hiding there arts from outsiders.

The Sauromatia forbidden beer production issue has still not resolved, all messengers sent those lands have not been heard from again. The High Church has responded they wil do something about this blastmery. The hard way…

Other news: The Valkyrie in charge of the gates to Helhalla are having difficulties processing the clients who wish to pass trough. While this is not a severe problem, it is for those who wish to pass trough. Those who die now will have to wait 40 days. And the line is increasing. The hangadrotts have suggested charging a platinum card witch you can buy pior to your death to skip the line. This is to increase profits because there is often a period of unemployment after these kind of times for the Valkyrie.

Our greatest killer of men, master Lechiek of the truth, drinker of the sacred beer, Hringhorne... Has finally died!

It became drawn; Hringhorne barely had its 67th tap of beer. The messenger arrived reporting he should escort Migaaresno back to the lab, witch is kina the only thing standing at the ruins of Ulm. He spoke to the messenger: "Yaare gaare klagre..." *bonk*. He felt down, stood up, picked up his champions trident, ridded to the enemy’s nearby camp, disobeyed orders and died a hero’s dead. And took a few others whit him.

The Churches of Helheim sound the “Joy of Winermarch” as priests and warriors of The Truth gather to the capital to be chosen 4th martyr of the greatest nation ever emerged!

I think this is the single most import value for an MP player and I respect Reverend for that.
You can see as with Hellheim and Ctis I have respected my pacts no matter the consequences. I have received multiple offers at multiple points in the game to attack hellheim, yet I didn't.

I actually think the four leading powers have more or less an equal chance for victory with myself and hellheim having some advantage over Ctis and Oceania. If all the nations do want to unite against me I'm cool with that. I will of course lose but that's the way DOM games go, after all, only one player can win. All fellow players in this game are brilliant so I'm cool with any of them winning http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Those "lies" are backed up by provable facts, such as our diplomatic correspondence trying to persuade you from attacking me and you refusing as long as I hold on to Agarthan lands, and such as the previous turns in which you have attacked me two or three times in Agarthan capitol with no retaliation from me other then self defense.

And about your VPs. actually I'm not going to touch them in the near future since its obvious to me that when I do the nations will turn me. Even had I wanted them I would have needed to lay siege first, what will give everyone plenty of chance to stop me. For the same reason I didn't press for Arco capitol.

Hehe, the wyrm did eat two significant armies from C'tis, did it not?

I was essentially hanging on by my nails for like 50 turns, after Ygorl crushified me with his sacred giants. Those armies from C'tis were really impressive (although I would script that devourer of souls more aggressively: you can't resist the effect by any means, and it seems that the secondary effects of weapons will hit the target regardless of whether the actual attack hits or not. Thus, a script of flight, attack large monsters should mean a quick death to such monsters as the wyrm), and I'm sure Wraith will have his hands full trying to win over the combined might of y'all. Still, he's got a lot of experience of the late game, and the scenario's strongest position, so I'd still bet on him.

Indeed, and the Soul Slay that took out my Tartarian in the last battle was...painful.

I think I brought too many normal troops to the first couple of battles--they broke and caused everyone to rout before my thugs had a chance to get to the Wyrm. Not only that, the troops wound up getting in the way of the thugs, who wound up milling around the gate as the scrubs poured through to die...

Helheim should have attacked Caelum sooner! That's what I say... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

I agree. You all probably have no idea of the amount of gems I threw into fighting Helheim. Besides my normal, high gem income, I was fever fetish spamming (got upto +30 fire gems/turn) and clamming, approaching +50 astral gems/turn.

I am truly amazed. Was hellheim that powerful that it took this kind of economy such as you had plus all the might of Ulm to contain it???

What I saw from hellheim suggested poor research, hence vulnerability to high level spells.

Yes, Helheim was that powerful.

I did not find him that vulnerable to high level spells. You only got 2-3 rounds before you were overwhealmed at best anyway. Remember thou this was before Helheim was nerfed.

Yea, Helmheim was difficult to contain, and he played his hidden troop really well. Probably Oceania, being a water nation, was never as effected as I was, but he managed to completely kill my economy with this guerilla tactics.

Problem was that my PD was more or less useless: even with PD 20+, a small group of his glamour units was able to take a province. So, I would have needed to put a significant army into every province.

Thanks again Meglobob for the helping me in this joint effort. And Migaaresno, well played.

No problem Bluebird, I was sure we would win together vs Helheim but Migaaresno was excellent with his stealth troops.

Yea, PD wise, I tried 40+ with a couple of mages to support in a vain effort at a defense, failed miserably...I think any PD cannot survive a assault by even a few of Helheims raiders.

But couldn't you sacrifice defense of your own provinces and just bring the attack to his home court?- I mean pay him back with the same coin. Use small squads, recruit some stealthy indies, use assassination spells, ruin his economy with hurricanes, volcanic eruption etc etc. The question is not meant in a disregarding way, rather I'd really like to better understand what really happened.

Now I'm really sorry I moved all of my scouts out of hellheim's turf, I probably missed a lot of fun http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/mad.gif

You won thats what happened... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Helheim was a really big help to you, he killed Vanheim single handed early on, drove me into the sea. Then he killed Marverni, helped by Ulm. Then he defeated the alliance of myself (Oceania) and Ulm. Well doing so he even attacked Sauromatia and softened him up for you. Thats the story of the west, domination by Helheim...the east is a tale for someone else to tell.

Just for the record I did Mind Hunt several of Helheims leaders and did hit him with regular locust swarms.

The best troop against Helheim were mercenary slyphs, those wiped the floor with his troops, shame they deserted me. Also fire elementals and magma children, fire attack AOE 1 were good, but they came along too late. Really spring hawks are probably a good answer to Helheims troops but air is a weak path for Oceania.
