"Ahab casts ...blah"
But where is Ahab and how did it effect the troops?
How about turning the message into a link so that clicking on it is like clicking on the caster. Maybe a light effect to show which troops got boosted. Maybe hitting another button causes you to zoom where the bolt hit at the moment it hits. So you can see the effect on the caster and then the targets with 2 simple clicks.

Not too bad of an optional feature. I'm currently among others who hope that battles will be broken down a little bit more, because it would help newbies to understand the game a little bit easier even if you just differentiate clearly in the messages between who on which side is doing what (and not just limited to spells cast, neither).

most spells do have special effects that show who's getting buffed, if you pause it as they cast you can tell which commander is casting by whether or not they are in their "strike" position.
these don't show up if you are pressing N through each turn, though.

Yes, true, but so much easier it would be if one side's lettering was on one side of the screen, in bright chartreuse, and the other side's lettering was on the other side of the screen, in bright mauve.

The point being that in a big battle you have trouble narrowing down who is who and where.
This way you can quickly and easily see the commander and see what the output was. Making it possible to figure out what spells are worth while.
To make it quicker you could add a option to asign a "number 1-0" to commanders when you click on them so you could go to that commander by just hitting that number. That way you could cycle through top commanders with a simple button mashing.
Like using F12 to cycle through all your commanders just by hitting it over and over.

That's not a bad suggestion either.
