I'm sure it's been said before, but I'll say it again... a high-contrast shadowing for the text that appears during 'view battle' would be a much needed fix. White text on white backgrounds is exceptionally difficult to read.

I agree.

For me battle text appears ... in black ! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
But I have a nvidia card now and believe I remember that it was white on white on my previous ATI card, so it looks like a drivr/card issue.

There are a lot of switches to play with that fix it.

The switches that can be added to the command to run the game. Some are for automation, some for running a game, some for generating a map, and some are just for personal preferences.
Here is the full list of them.

I dont know which ones might affect the present complaint but if I had that problem Id probably play with some of them such as opacity.
Now that I look, I thought there were more for graphics. I guess I was thinking of another game.

Opacity isn't the problem; it's contrast. White text looks fine for most battlefield sky textures... until it snows. The text itself needs to be shadowed, or have a back-banner. I didn't see any switches for something like those.

I was offtrack for abit because I remember there being a new command for text color. But when I tracked it down it apparently applies only to map text (province names).

That's why I suggested mauve and chartreuse in a previous thread. It's hard to find those colors in nature, and they're very vibrant against snow.
