It's early age because im most familiar with that and for 15 players. I havent decided on the map yet so thats debatable.
Also not sure about victory points or just standard.
Renaming is on, Graphs are off. All other settings are standard

If you want to join, just post your nation of choice and email your pretender to koningvandemambo@hotmail.com.

we'll try to play as fast as possible but i dont want to rush it. so 1 turn a day seems reasonable.

We now have:

1.Eddiewallie = Helheim
2.Jutetrea = Tien Chi
3.Dedas = Ermor
4.Tromper = C'tis
5.AI = Lanka
6.Cor = Marverni(slain)
7.Pototron = Niefelheim
8.Thraveboy = Kailasa
9.Reay = Vanheim
10.AI = Atlantis
11.Cupido2 = Oceania
12.Paul_the_Avenger = Agartha
13.Johnarryn = Caelum
14.AI= Arcoscephale
15.AI= Abysia

I maybe don't qualify as "newish"; while I've just played one Dom3 MP game, I played a handful of Dom2 games a while back, and that experience seems to translate fairly well. Anyhow, at the least I can say I'm comfortable w/ the game and would avoid big league noobish type mistakes.

All that said, if you're still looking for players, I'd be happy to join in (preferably as Tien Chi).

I want to play early age Ermor, please. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Why don't you give us your e-mail instead, so we can send you our pretenders, then you will get our adresses. In this way we don't make a feast for the spambots.

Cheers!

I'm insanely new - have never played a multi-player game before. I've played a lot of single-player middle age games since release and would like to try early age.

I'd like to give C'tis a whirl, If possible. Will pm my address.

Oh, and what pace are we going to be doing turns? 1 per day?

Everything you need to know about playing PBEM is on pp 29-31 in the manual. More specifically, to email your pretender, you must create your pretender using the Game Tools/Create Pretender choice. Once you have done that, the pretender will be written out in a file in the dominions3\savedgames\newlords directory. For example, my pretender file is: "early_tienchi_0.2h". The only trick to this is that if you've created more than one pretender for that nation, it will name them in sequence, so you need to be careful about getting the correct file.

As for the map, I would favor a large map (say 20-25 provinces per player).

I would like to be Vanheim. I have only played the tutorial so I'm a total newbie.

Any of Glory of the Gods, Orania, Dawn of Dominions or Cradle of Dominion would be good for 15 players.
I think victory points are a good idea for large maps otherwise the games can go on forever.

I will email my pretender soon.

Is it necessary to get 15 players to start? I'd actually be fine w/ starting w/ nine, although getting to 12 might be nice.

I would be interested. I have yet to play a Multi-player Dom3 game. I don't care what nation I play.

The only ones I have tried are;
Niefelheim
Kailasa
Vanheim

Large maps are cool, but keep in mind that the game will be running for a LONG time, most likely.

Ah, John, seems you've become a bit more strict in your approach to hosting Dominions games - I approve! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Has a decision been made on the map? I still vote for a largeish # of provinces/player (like 20+).

johnarryn
January 29th, 2007, 07:21 PM
Haha, thanks Terrel. Anyway, I agree that a big map wouldnt be bad... large random maps generate about 20 provs per person I think... you can always create one ahead of time and make sure its ok.
Some of the bigger predesigned maps are also pretty roomy.

So were almost ready to start, we still need 3 pretenders: Reay-Vanheim, Imororg-Sauromatia and Kyosti-Pangaea. I miss these so if you already send them please do so again.

Have been generating a lot of maps the past few days and i think i'm almost satisfied =)I'd like to know you'r view on victory points because i think it will make the game more fun but i have'nt got a clue on how many points and the distribution of them between nations.

Let me know and i will make up my pretender mind.

VPs will shorten the game, which is fine. I am very slightly against VPs, only because i am about to play another VP game... I really dont care that much.

I would vote against cumulative VPs, but I'm indifferent to using standard VPs. VPs do make a large map more workable for the end game and I like that. I think it makes sense to have either a VP condition or a province total condition, but its not essential.

johnarryn
January 30th, 2007, 03:07 PM
VP's do allow for the "teleport in with SC" attacks for the win, which can be obnoxious. On the other hand, they do shorten the game.

Cor
January 30th, 2007, 03:08 PM
After reading the AAR of this VP game I suggest caution with VPs.

http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/threads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=d3maars&Number=474486&page =0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=18

Summary of complaints: the game ended early (turn 48) and abruptly (by raiding). Players never seem to castle thier VPs. The 3 point VP provinces are too much. 40% Vp is too low, 65% suggested.

I sent in my Vanheim pretender last night (Australia time) so I'm not sure who we are waiting on.

I'd prefer standard VPs myself since it will be a large map and it adds a bit of strategy. I guess they should have defended the VPs better in that AAR game. We should at least go for a province total condition, of course I have not played a MP game yet so I'm not sure.

Eddiewallie

glad you are all excited but were still waiting for Imororg-Sauromatia and Kyosti-Pangaea. i have no other way to contact them then the forum so hope they'll check it soonish.

i have decided that we'll play with vp but enough to make the game last and not too many 3vp provinces. i'll send you guys/girls the map once i have all the pretenders.

Why not open up the two slots so those that are more interested to play can do so. Or at least set a deadline. Because if a game hasn't become interesting (as in not even starting) people tend to forget that they joined. Just saying and all... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

In my game (Clash of the Newbies) I have the same problem. A couple of people who have not submitted their pretenders.

I am going to go with fewer players if I dont get extra submissions by tonight. There seems to be one slot open. But I will give priority to those who where first...

Eddiewallie, if you have trouble filling the slots then maybe you could start with fewer players.

Eddie, looks like we need official word on what version we are supposed to be using. I'm on 3.04, but can easily patch if thats what we're doing.

FWIW, iirc from Dom2 days, they usually made it pretty easy to have more than one version installed. Also, I'm guessing that if we're running the wrong client for a turn or two, it won't be too big of a disaster (I hope...).

Im not sure about it. I've heard of some patch problems causing crashes, this may just be on a server game... I had a PBEM game where differences in patch made weird things happen for a turn or so (battle results summary did not match what happened when you watched the battle).

johnarryn

Near as I can tell, it seems that EW already patched. I tried to run off 3.04, got an error, installed the patch and it ran. Ok, I found the cause. None of you obviously run the game in Linux as I do or you would have had the same crash. The map file and the turn file look for a map file called "Lakeside.rgb", but the map file that was sent to me was named "lakeside.rgb". Well, perhaps this just me be a jerk, but I say let 'em stale! I hold the opinion that if the player can't put in enough effort ask for a delay by sending you an email, or posting in the forum, then letting them stale is just fine and dandy.

Also, I would say that setting deadlines based on what is convenient for you is also just fine, since so long as we have 24hrs to do our turn, we've had our opportunity to get the turns in. I'm sure w/ our globe spanning crews that no matter what deadline you set, it'll be 2am for someone somewhere.

All the above said, if someone requests a postponement in advance, or if there's some unique situation, I'm all for being tolerant and flexible and for you to use your judgement as host.

still no word from arartha and niefel? maybe they should stale this turn.

With a two week hiatus it would not seem to be unusual for a couple of player to go missing entierly. Hope that is not the case with them, but has it been 48 hours now?

johnarryn

I say just host... if you don't hear anything from them in a turn or two look for replacements... but the pace of this game has been slow due to just a few people.

jutetrea
February 20th, 2007, 02:31 PM
Agartha here - much apologies.

Turn was sent day or so before, no idea why I let it sit so long. Must have clicked the e-mail and then not saved the file as I thought we were still on the previous turn when i checked in game.

In all honesty - stale whoever is late, myself included.

johnarryn
February 20th, 2007, 02:42 PM
Im running a 24 hour PBEM game myself... generally what I try to do is sent out reminder emails after about 16 hours or so. Its a bit of work, but it helps to avoid any confusion. I definitely stale people regularly if they're late, but I try to be fair.

jutetrea
February 20th, 2007, 02:56 PM

Still no turn?
hummm....

Its not the hosts fault.
I think its time to stale any player who does not have their turn in.

maybe we need to set a more realistic 48 hour rule. I like the 24 hour thing, but we will see if it works.

Hellboy
February 21st, 2007, 03:29 PM
I'm not interested in whose fault this is, but I am now getting very pessimistic about this game getting off the ground. It has now been:

5 days since I last received a turn.
3 days since Eddiewallie told us he was going to strict 24hr turn rotation.
2 days since Eddiewallie told us no more warnings

But, still no turn. Maybe its time to write this one off?

johnarryn
February 21st, 2007, 05:19 PM
Let's not all abandon the game yet... we might not have some critical information. Personally I think that Eddiewallie does just need to start hosting every 24 hours no matter what... sometimes it seems mean, but it needs to be done. I've staled by brother doing this, but in reality staling one turn isnt going to hurt much, and it sends a message to people that they need to be serious about the game.

ok, i'm sorry to say it, but this game is just going way too slow for me. I hate resigning, but this is not what I signed on for. I'll stick around for a turn or two if that helps to find a replacement, but other than that I'm outta here.

I have to admit Im write there with Hellboy. This game is moving too slow, which would not normally be a problem for me, but I have to go on vacation for 10 days at the end of next week. In addition to that, my frustration has grown considerably, as I generally send my .2h file 1-2 hours after the turn files are sent out, and I accidently sent in a file for another game, and was staled instead of being asked for a new .2h file, because we were starting "a strict 24h schedule." Since that turn, it was then 48 hours until the next turn, and it has now been 72 hours since that turn and files have not been sent out. Eddiewallie, please look for a new arcos player as well. I will be going ai on the next turn file if you cant find someone by then.
