Due to the fact that the virtual server which runs these games has timekeeping issues I will be manually forcing this game to host every 48 hours. Eventually the game will move to another machine. Quickhost will be enabled. It is hoped that players will normally be able to play every 24 hours, with the occasional missed day.
Players who wish to surrender (resign) should simply turn their nation to AI or have a substitute take over. Failing to do you turn twice a in a row without letting anyone know will get you put on AI.

Glad to have you. FYI though this is a TCP/IP game where you have to connect at the minimum of every 48 hours to do your turns (the server will always be on) - not technically PBEM.
Of course the speed of the game is comparable to most PBEM games out there http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

I appreciate the heads up. I'm extremely computer literate, I'm getting a computer science degree in Information Systems and I build them all the time. Keeping up shouldn't be an issue.
What does quickplay mean exactly? I'd hazard to guess that it means that if everyone has finished their turn ahead of time, it begins the next turn right away.

We are full... sorry to all those after Hadrian II. (there are only 18 nations available in the Late Age).
I'll start assigning nations later today.
Velusion
January 28th, 2007, 02:22 PM
Nations are posted. Get those gods ready and them them (along with the password!) to velusion(@at@)sbcglobal(dot)net. I'll respond back with the IP/port of the server and eventually (unless you specify otherwise) send out a complete email list to everyone and add everyone to get hosting notifications.
First assignments went off without any conflicts!
I must admit I kind of took a double-take when I got Ermor as I already play them in 2 of the other 3 MP games I'm in (though not the late "Ashen Empire" version). On the one hand I know I'm going to get stomped (they don't have the best rep in MP it seems)... on the other hand at least I'm familiar by now with undead nations http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif.
Commence whining and wailing concerning your nation assignment now... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Caelum... I suppose raiding and battle-magic will be today's forecast. I definitely won't be able to take the resource-heavy troops, and will need to rely on random magic to get the more powerful thunder spells... A site-searching Pretender will come in handy for getting it started. I've never had any success with Caelum's archers, not even when wind-guided, so I suppose military might comes second.

Sailing is very handy for mobility if you are on the coast. Not sure what "ultimate" sailing is. Since two nations have sailing in this era I tried to ensure the map would hopefully allow sailing to be actually useful.
calmon

Sailing is good in some situations, but mainly for commanders/mages and marignon have some of it.

There is no big rush, but as an update we are waiting on:
Pangaea – Shovah32: I still haven't seen your pretender... perhaps its just a mail delay though. You might want to send it again to be sure.
R'lyeh – Reay: He messaged me and said he should have it in by tomorrow.
Midgard – Folket: Haven't heard from Folket yet.
FYI... if you haven't done so yet go ahead and make sure you can connect to the server. I'll start once everyone is "human controlled".

Velusion mailed you the server ip/port. You have to connect and upload your pretender.

Ok I have almost everything... I just need the following:
R'lyeh – Reay to connect to the server (I just sent you the address)
Midgard – Folket to connect and upload your pretender (I never got an email so I'm sending you the server address in a PM)
I must have been putting the god files in the wrong spot... but everything seems to be uploaded and almost ready!

Twice I have been in the process of downloading the map, and both times when I am just over half way through, I get a nagot gick fel. It says something about a bad sever packet. I will try later.
Meglobob
January 31st, 2007, 06:22 PM
The map takes a long time to download, 10 minutes or so for me.
Also if you get a bad packet, just keep trying. Had this in another MP, can take 3-4 goes before you get it. Fortunatly you only after download the map successfully once.

Ok... made some changes to the switches (how they are ordered) and I was able to connect, end my turn, and then reconnect (I wasn't able to do that before). The application is also not grabbing tons of memory and holding it (100MB+) as it was earlier.
I'm not sure it's fixed for good, but go ahead and connect.

Yes. The only time I manually force the game is if someone hasn't done their turns in 48 hours.

Something is wrong with the status page.
I just opened the turn and leave the game with "exit without save". On the stats page my status was "Turn complete" in the game i had the right status (no uploaded 2h file).
I did my turn now but its the same to mictlan. He didn't do his turn but the stats page says he does.

Some Updates:
R'lyeh accidentally submitted his turn before he was finished and he won't be able to access the game again for a few more hours. I've turned off quickhost until he fixes his error. The turn will host in about 5-6 hours probably.
I'm also going to use this opportunity to employ a backup script, so we can go back to turn "X" if something gets hosed up.
The main host machine got a RAM update (not that dom3 really cares). But hey... I'm pretty damn happy!
Finally - due to the issues with the Status page I'm going to take it down for a little while. We'll be running some tests and hopefully it will come back soon! Email notification is, of course, still in effect.

I would like someone who hasn't done thier turn yet to do a little test for me if possible.
1) Connect to the server and download your turn
2) Issue a few orders
3) Click "Options" => "Save Game and Quit"
4) Close Dom3 and then open it back up
5) Connect to the server again and see if it shows you have submitted your turn.
It has always been my assumption that the server only marks your turn as submitted is if you click "End Turn". This is currently the problem R'lyeh has.

It appears that it counts your turn even if you save game and quit. My suggestion would be to connect to the server to download the turn, then exit out of the server instead of issuing any turn orders, do your turn out of the server, then reconnect to the server to upload your now completed turn. That way you can finish the turn at your leisure instead of leaving it half done. You have to remember to hit save game and quit instead of end turn though when you are doing your turn out of the server.

After some testing (thanks LCH) it has been determined that when you "save and quit" the game DOES mark your turn as completed. If you "Quit without saving" it will not. So keep that in mind FYI. If this is a bug or not is debatable, but it seems to be reproducible on other servers.

Yeah the game says that it will not upload the 2h if you just save and quit. It then goes back to the screen with all the flags and it says you have completed your turn.
I think they should at least change the "will not upload" message you get if this is the intended behavior.
Oh well as Ramshead suggested I will just disconnect from the server until I have actually finished my turn and then just reconnect to upload.
Thanks guys.

No, not all of it, for there is a small little village left which still holds out against the Patalian invaders ... err, no, what I meant is: Marignon is supposedly looking for some sunny vacation island for their nation, too. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smirk.gif
Micah
February 19th, 2007, 09:16 PM
Well, given the extreme oppression that the Terminator was inflicting on his populace when I liberated them from his cruel rulership I think I have done the island people a great favor.
We hope Marignon's tour group enjoyed their stay, but as we just told them, mating season is starting, and sometimes the apes get a little...violent. They will hopefully be leaving the island peacefully, as we would hate for any accidents to occur. I doubt a war would be profitable for them, given their presence and thus vulnerability on the mainland, whereas my monkies would welcome a diversion from their poop-flinging, since they don't have much else to do at the moment.
Micah

Marignon seems to be investing a good deal of effort and money into maintaining his island resort, in case anyone on the mainland happens to want to remind him where his priorities should be.
CyborgMoses
February 21st, 2007, 08:20 AM
I think "keeping any one player from completely controlling a landmass" is a pretty good priority, personally. Calmon! Calmon! he's our man, if he can't do it, well then that's one less nation I'll have to fight my way past in the end game, I suppose. Wait, that's not terribly supportive, is it?
calmon
February 21st, 2007, 08:36 AM
Your apes are really grazy.
First our friendly expedition corp was welcomed with an accepted peace. You use the time to defeat ulm. After conquering the last province, the first thing you did is to declare war and attack in the same turn. Your elephant mob got a bloody nose by attacking my corp.
In moment you control ~75% of the island, but you ask for support on the main land? We've only a fraction of your troops on the island.
I begin to think that your abilities are so useless that you're not able to kick some random troops back in the sea. I don't know how you manage to defeat ulm, all i can think is you also surprise-attacked them. However that won't work anymore, all be warned about the 'honor' of the apes.
Micah
February 21st, 2007, 08:56 AM
So you'd rather have Calmon have both a solid foothold on the mainland AND complete control of the island? That certainly seems to be the greater of two evils.
Even with the damage I've done so far he's still in or tied for first in 4 graphs, with a 2nd and 3rd place to round it out, so again, I think everyone else is a lot better off with me having the island instead of Calmon.
Micah
February 21st, 2007, 09:24 AM
Calmon: I'm merely being prudent...I assume you wouldn't be massing more troops to pursue a lost cause, so I'm guessing you have some sort of nastiness planned. I gave you warning so you could take your troops and leave, instead you decided to sink 700 or so gold into PD to kill off a few of my elephants. Again, if you're so confident that you'll lose you wouldn't have done anything of the sort.
I also never said I wanted peace per se, I just said I didn't want any trouble with you, which is perfectly true. I could have really launced a surprise attack on you and taken out your expedition team and a province, but I gave you warning beforehand so you could withdraw peacefully...you did not.
And you have more than a fraction of my income, and excellent PD to sink it into. Letting you dominate the graphs and kill me down the road at your leisure because I have nowhere to expand to wasn't my idea of a sound strategy.
As to Ulm, well, trample is a gross mismath for them early game, and I simply abused that fact. It wasn't particularly skillful, but it was effective, and given their central location on the island it was again a case of kill or be killed. Not attacking straight away before he got paralyze would have left me with inferior recruitable troops, less provinces due to our forts' spheres of influence, and much, much, much worse PD.

Hrumph. The horselords view your squabling with amusement. After the chaos caused by the brief tenure of the mad king (staling the first few turns) our empire must have appeared weak for the palid Agartha slugs attempted a sneak attack, only to find that mere infantry has no chance against the might of the horselords. As the dust kicked up by our mighty riders decended on thier capitol, the overgrown goblin lovers thought they also spied a weakend neighbor and tried to snatch the jewel of the Agartha nation away from us only to find as the slugs before them that even overgrown infantry cannot stand against the pounding hooves of our ancestrial riders. The giant king snivelingly appologized for the attempt, backing away with his tail between his legs after recieving grevious giant casualties. Asking for forgiveness, while with his next breath suggesting that lack of swift retribution would allow him to build a more serious threat for the future. Should you desire a peace after trying to snatch our prize Manuk, you must offer more than words in ransom. Your offer to mount a stiffer attack in the future is not compelling enough to stall my wrath.
Even the undead attempt an appologetic manuever into our territory! Alas Velusion, your appology and promise to remove all troops next turn is rejected as all your troops are slain. Let the lessons of these three nations serve as a warning to all the other feuding fiefdoms, the borders of T'ien Ch'i are agressively defended, and the horselords are not to be trifled with.

Yet, even in defeat the beasts of R'lyeh spread their evil. With terrible powers they have driven mad the leader of Man, with whom we had a treaty of non-aggression. He claims we declared war. It is not true, there was no war, until his recent words made it necessary.
They would do to us what they have done to Caelum, but we will not tolerate it! The leader of Man has been corrupted by the beasts of the Void, and must be taken down, or he will spread the madness.
We will abide by the rules of the agreement we had, and they have still 2 months before the armies of Atlantis rise from the waters. Any nation that joins in this war against the final evil outpost of evil R'lyeh, Man, will be considered a friend of Atlantis.

Perhaps Atlantis did not declare war on us, nonetheless they have been intentionally spreading unholy dominion in our land, spying on our capital, and immediately cancelled NAP after we peacefully handover the ownership of a province. With R'lyeh cruelly destroyed, Atlantis is capturing independent sea nations and spreading evil dominion with great speed, the monopolization of the ocean must be stopped before it's too late.I call for your support and all allies will be richly rewarded.

I've been pretty happy with the lack of stales and the relatively consistent 36 hour host times. We are doing better than I thought we would http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif. This turn has been the exception, but seeing as how I'm in 3 other games it doesn't bother me. Right now it's taking me about an hour to do a single turn here (I take my time managing my trash I suppose) so sometimes I just have to put it off until the next day.
Edit: Wait a second... it hasn't even been 24 hours yet! This turn is going just fine so far http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif.

Abysia has forced us to retreat under the waves, as continuous war against first R'lyeh, and then Man and Abysia was too much even for the proud Atlanteans.
Any nation that goes to war with Man or Abysia in the future will have us as an ally, our only requirement being that we may claim back our coastal home.

True, not only the script said so, but the ingame tracker showed the same. I guess because of the timer trouble that Velusion has with his VMware hosts that it showed Arco as "missed a turn" (he must have done it immediately after hosting last turn, and the script only checks if that is more than 48 hours ago). When I had a look some hours ago the ingame counter showed 48 hours remaining, too, maybe it has been reset. Why Caelum is shown as only "Turn pending" I don't know, I guess he made his turn in time and that's why the game hosted?

Indeed the walking dead grow close to critical mass and all living men should fear them. They expand like a cancer in all directions and with blood flowing in their veins would do well to oppose them. Our squabbles will come to aught when we all serve the lord of the dead.

Baalz (Tien)just wants a free hand to crush Utgard, one of the few nations that have been civil to the dead. His concern revolves around keeping me busy so he can plunder my more civil neighbors.
"Crushing Jomon"?!? When did I start doing this? Sure I can raid his lands but if anyone has scouts in the northern wastes they will see 2 large "anti-undead" armies advancing deep into Ermor territory.
And any "crushing" I one day get around to is totally justified... I offered Jomon peace and he tried to force me to pay a ridiculous bribe. Wanting to "rest in peace" I reluctantly offered to give him what I could, but still Jomon rejected it and attacked me first! I think Jomon sensed he could take advantage of C'tises misfortune (who, btw, attacked me first as well) and now that someone is taking advantage of him he wishes to complain!
The Dead Laugh!
P.S. Everyone knows that my huge armies can be almost completely wiped out with combination of priests and anti-undead spells... The graph is impressive, but ultimately misleading.

Oh ho ho, the lord of the dead speaks out the back side of his skull. The horselords do not prance around to attract sympathetic bystanders, we simply let one and all know that we stand with any who stand against the legion of dead and their necrophilic giant companions. Let those who stand on the sidelines not complain when thousands of frozen dead begin tearing down their walls as the Ermor/Utgard unholy alliance conquers the world. You claim the score graphs are misleading, I claim my scouts have sighted an undead army numbering several thousand and growing every day. There are naught who can stand alone against that.
Thrice you have breached our borders, and thrice been flung back bloodied. Twice have the giants attacked us, and twice had cause for regrets. Enough I say. Let the hands of men send these abominations back to the grave for good before it is too late.

When will the filthy giants learn that their fetid bulk is not enough to allow them to stand against real cavalry? Utgard again brought all the strength it could muster to the field against our warriors, this time bringing their idol to prance around for our amusement. Spies and scouts were thick as fleas in this province, the giants had employed an assassin and our responding patrols turned up nearly a dozen spectators waiting to see our troops clash. Here is what transpired for those who had their eyes removed.
The great giant host drew up around their false goddess, a hugely fat great mother. Our heavy cavalry pawed the ground eagerly, relieved to have a break from the monotony of seiging the onetime capitol of Argatha. The giants had been thoughtful, and brought more than enough of their kin for every of our mighty warriors to blood themselves.
Having felt the sting of the giant’s frost magic in the past, our Celestial Masters began the battle by enchanting all of our forces with a winter ward, fortifying them against the chilling arts. Meanwhile, our great hero Li T’ieh-Kuai summoned a group of valkyries to harass the giant’s spellcasters, while some of our ancestor guides sent waves of shadow blasts into the giant’s ranks. Then our warriors charged forward screaming for blood, the towering forms of Celestial Soldiers hot on their heels in a second wave.
Seeing their fate glinting on the end of 12 foot ashwood lances, the cowardly earth mother summoned up the powers of the earth in a great earthquake, attempting to drop our battlemages before the battle was truly joined. This first attempt caused only mild damage for our army is uniformly dextrous, but the earth mother seemed inclined to cast this all day which could have caused a problem, so one of our Celestial Masters quickly paralyzed the fat figure to put an end to that. Our wave of thundering doom broke over the giant ranks and scores of giants were skewered in a bloody, screaming impact that cracked like the thunder our Celestial Masters rained down in the giant’s back ranks.
Such was the ferocity of our warriors that our ancestor smiths scarcely had time to finish their enchantment of them before the majority of the giants lay unmoving in the shallow snow. Stellar Cascades rained down among the giant sorcerers, and those who were not quickly paralyzed found that even their ineffective frost spells could scarcely be cast as their energy was leeched out their skin.
Our third wave of water elementals never even had a chance to join the fray as the few remaining giants ran for their lives, abandoning their paralyzed false god, prophet, and sorcerers. Not one in ten giants lived through the day, and not a single of their spell casters walked off the field. Their false goddess was drawn and quartered, her paralyzed body torn limb from limb to prevent it from regenerating and show one and all her true lack of divinity.
Having slain the only leadership the giants know, it is only humane to continue through and finish them. Let it not be said that the horselords would leave a lame horse to shuffle around in pain!

I have never played with the giants before (I don't play SP) so I am kind of just throwing everything against the wall to see what sticks. I didn't realize that there was a defense check for earthquake or I would't have bothered. I feel as though it might be worth it just to bring out all the death casters and drop 20-30 shadow blasts and see if its worth the gems.

Eh, after a certain point the gems wouldn't have helped him - plus he would need the research and casters in order to be able to use them. I don't think he was throwing away stuff he could use. Micah isn't a fool - I've played with him before http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif.
I agree with him that someone should have helped him as it is quickly growing apparent that Marignon is the super-power to beat (if it is even possible anymore). If I was in his position I would have probably thrown the gems to a weaker empire that was completely removed and isolated from Marignon with the hope that they would one day have revenge against Marignon and all of his neighbors that never helped.
I do disagree with the thought that you should punish everyone else in the game by giving up everything to the current leader.

Oh, I don't think he is a fool, but he seems to be having a fit. Gems always help, and if only by transmuting them to gems you can use. And lots of summons really can make a difference, I really speak from my own experience here. If he is expecting doom then research would be neglible anyway.

Marignon has shown to be the super-power here as soon as during the first ten turns. Since then, he only had to make sure that he stays on top. If anybody else would really be fighting him, it would show in the other nations' army size graph. (read: nope) I do not think that anybody can take the price away from him since some 5-10 turns already, save a purely hypothetical situation in which all others would stop their quarrels and attack him together. But I'd not even like and support that, Calmon did well, and there's still fun enough for everyone else in this game. And of course, there can still be surprises.

Thanks Tera.
Marignon didn't start the fight on the island, I did. I was hoping to get rid of him before he got too established. But, between Marignon's best-in-the-game PD and what seemed to be archer indies in every single one of the provinces Calmon had, combined with flaming arrows and my shieldless troops, I failed. I don't think waiting would have helped any though, since he was already in a fairly dominant position.
Ich: I spent my research going after arrow fend, and not anything I could dump massive amounts of gems into. By the time I got it I'd lost too much territory to recover, owing to Patala's amazingly bad PD and Marignon's financial/research dominance. I managed a couple of inspiring battles, including killing their pretender, but I was doomed to a phyrric loss. Alchemy wouldn't have helped me, I was doing alright until the bottleneck broke. I went from viable to near-hopeless in the space of 2 turns, it wasn't a gradual thing that could have been stopped with some gold...I needed arrow fend, and you can't alchemize research.
Moses: I don't think people are obligated to protect me. I told people that they should attack Marignon while I had them distracted. They didn't, and now it's too late to stop Calmon from winning. My expectation was not that I should be protected, but that people should look to their long-term interests.
Why should I hold a grudge against Calmon for beating me in a fight that I started? I fought until there was no hope left, and then a little longer to be sure, but the loss of half my mages and my pretender sealed the deal. Patala was done and I had a pile of gems to give out. Giving them to a nation that beats me fairly seems a pretty good choice to me. Here's why:
Assuming that meta-gaming happens: If I can provide a precedent that a nation might get a couple of hundred gems by waiting the last turn or two before attacking me to let a NAP expire instead of jumping the gun I will be gaining a few turns of advantage from that. Whereas if I insist on punishing everyone I fight and going scorched-earth all of the time it just encourages people to try to surprise me so I have less time to make my empire implode. As I said, I save that for the times when I get backstabbed.
If you're more of a role-player: Not having an ally to evacuate their magical treasures to, Patala's store of gems was left inside their jeweled city, and was found and looted by Marignon when they successfully stormed the castle.
On top of that, as I said, I'm pretty sure the game is done at this point. Marignon leads all of the graphs, by far, and also has blood magic, which isn't reflected in any of them. The arch devils he has running around count for a bit more than 6 size points on the army graph, trust me. If Calmon doesn't win at this point I'll be VERY surprised. I honestly believe that I'm merely speeding the inevitable along with my donation so people won't get stuck playing out a foregone game for quite as long. I'm sure people will take exception to such a deterministic view of the game, but Marignon's lead at this point is just too big.
