Does anybody have any thoughts on what the various province defense messages actually signify in terms of defending militia?
E.g.
"no organized local defense"= 0
"lightly organized local defense" = 1-20
"well organized local defense" = 21-40
etc.?

Good question. I suspect it's the 0/10/20 cutoffs that are important. Is there anything above 'exceptionally strong and well organised'? I think starting home provinces get that.

I would definitely like to see a better description of the PD. It basically meaningless to me at this point.

Well, I guess either the devs 'fess up, or we need to start taking notes on the subject when we play, and with scouts in advance of our armies!

Spies reveal the actual PD numbers and still give the standard message. You can get the correlation from that.
I never actually nailed it down. When I had enough spies to make a good shot at it, I started focusing on the numbers and stopped paying attention to the reports.

thejeff - does that include scouts as well as spies? And, if I interpret your post correctly, if the report is "...10 militia comprised mostly of archers. This province has a lightly organized defense" or some such, that "10" *includes* any of the "lightly organized" to which you refer?
If so, I would have to disagree because then you would *never* get a report there was only a small number of actual unassigned enemy units but that the province was well-defended. I have on numerous occasions ventured into a province that appeared to have few overall units, and gotten my butt kicked (and not by incoming armies, to my knowledge).

Personally......I prefer it vague. Fog of War. Slowness of message delivery in the Medieval Age.

I suspect that you will find the results are not consistent between poptypes even if they have pretty much the same kinds of units. The numbers have to be set manually for each poptype, so Id be surprised at lots of exact matches.

No, spies actually give the same report as scouts as far as PD goes. "Lightly organized", or whatever. But, if you look at the province information the actual PD number will be shown, the same way it is for a province you own.
The "10 troops mostly archers" section is always actual mobile troops, distinct from PD.

thejeff - you must have "eyes of god" or some scrying cast. When I look at enemy provinces, I don't see a PD number.
