I've found an Abandoned Laboratory magic site but it doesn't appear to do anything (no gems, no bonuses, no description), and doesn't appear to function as a lab. I have the option of building a lab in the city. Is the Abandoned Laboratory basically just fluff, or is there some way to use it?

It should have spawned a functional lab when you found it. Did you just discover it, or was it taken from another nation? If the province was taken over it may have been found and then destroyed before you got there (intentionally or via event)
If you just searched and found it it sounds like a fluke or a bug if you didn't get a functional lab there.

The lab discovery itself is a magic site that takes up one of the magic site slots. As explained above it exists independently of the lab itself.

Thanks -- it's actually coded into a Dom2 map (tyrande) as:
#setland 35
#knownfeature "Abandoned Laboratory"
I took the land from independents.
So I guess if it's already hard-coded as known, then you never 'find' it, and a real laboratory isn't created.

I have had this too, as far as I can tell, its utterly useless.

That's correct. If that province is supposed to also contain a ready lab, then the #lab command should be added. Same deal with sites that give forts, if you want the fort and the site as a known feature, you need to add the #fort <nbr> command to the map file.

There is a sanctuary too or temple of light(can't exactly remember) that does not give a temple and the usual standard priest so you can choose between standard priest 1 and 2. All the same and utterly useless.

There is no site in the game that autobuilds temple on discovery. Unholy Temple in Dom2 did that, but it's removed. The various holy sites that give the option to recruit priests can actually serve a useful purpose if the indie poptype in the province does not have priests as an option (Barbarians, Horse Tribe, Ichtyids, Slingers etc).

Edi, thanks for clearing that up, I had wondered about the abandoned labs and site temples

Why was unholy Temple removed?

I don't know for certain, but I think because it was primarily intended for Ermor, specifically Ashen Empire Ermor, to allow them to get some temples up easily, which is pretty hard with so little gold income. It would have become a holy site in Dom3, which would have given it to absolutely everyone.
With the holy/unholy distinction removed, it doesn't really fit very well. Maybe if it was a blood or death site, but not very fitting even then. Also, gold is much more plentiful in Dom3 and you can get temples from events, so given how difficult that site was to find and how rare holy sites are compared to all the others, it does not really have much of an impact.

maybe someone found that abandoned lab and someone else demolished the lab. so you need to pay 500 bucks again.

Actually, that might be the answer. One of the changes to Dom3 is that indepts are a nation. That made them susceptable to events.
