map image (http://game.dom3minions.com/games/mid_Unlucky/mid_Maze.jpg)

Quick Turns: on
Turn Timeout: 24 hours
rename: on
mods: none
independents strength: 5
Hall of Fame: 15
Magic Sites: 65
Master Password: xxxxxxx
automated backups: on
full web dir: game.dom3minions.com/games/mid_Unlucky
will contain rolling stats file and rolling scores.html amoung other things
Max Players: 13
no client start (but it will auto-start at 13 signups)

server: game.dom3minions.com
server IP: 63.199.8.157
game port: 9876

The last mid-sized game on my server ran for 91 turns. The "Turn Timeout" setting can be changed during the game if the players agree to it.

When you join please mention here what variable you would accept other than 13 players. What is the number of players you would accept for starting the game if it goes to Friday without 13 signups? If only 5 people have joined then would you prefer starting (40 provinces per player?) or continue waiting for more players.

Joined as T'ien Chi. I've only played PBEM so far so a couple of questions:

How do I know when the game starts? This thread?
What are quick turns? I'm assuming if everyone finishes their turn it advances?
How do I know when a new turn is ready? Just keep checking or notification on this thread?

edit: even 7+ players is fine.

Looking forward to it

There is a utility on the stickied tools thread which can check servers without you having to keep bringing up Dominions.

But some servers also have check pages. Here is a new one for mid-sized games on my server.
http://game.dom3minions.com/bin/mids_chk.cgi

If you want to see what it looks like when turns are up then check the blitz page
http://game.dom3minions.com/bin/blitz_chk.cgi

You are right on quick turns. The game will host every 24 hours, or instantly if everyone turns in their turns. The last person turning in a turn can usually wait a couple minutes and do another one right away.

I am in as Niefelheim.

I would prefer to play with as many other players as possible. If we play with a small number of players on a map with 40 prov/player, I would suggest increasing the strength of the independents to 7 or 8.

Well, I have signed up as Atlantis, and I would be fine with fewer players; the folks who sign up at the last minute are usually also the people who constantly slow down the game once it's started.

Fewer players does atleast allow for some breathing room and actual kingdom conflicts when players start to find eachother.

A slight change to the chk page. It now shows the time left before hosting.
http://game.dom3minions.com/bin/mids_chk.cgi

Also in the games web directory is a windows link.
http://game.dom3minions.com/games/mid_Unlucky
mid_Unlucky.lnk
(or gamebutton.zip if you need it zipped to download it)
If you put that on your desktop then clicking it should take you directly into the mid_Unlucky game. If you play multiple online dom3 games then this will save you having to put in the server and port each time.

You can also copy it, and paste it again to your desktop. Then right-click it and go to "properties" to edit it to your other games. I think Ive had as many as 5 of these on my desktop at a time.

The Nation of Mictlan proudly announces an addition of six pachyderms to its city zoo! However, due to the enormous appetites of these gentle giants, we are having difficulty balancing our budgets this season.

If you are in the market for 10 fine Water gems, on a cash basis, then PM vfb and make an offer! Offers to trade Earth gems, Fire gems, or Astral Pearls for Water gems would also be appreciated. Please be aware that due to excessive celebrations at the opening ceremonies, we currently do not have any virgins available to sell or trade.

The way this game is shaping up, it appears that many players are playing their turns within the first couple hrs of the turn clock, while a few others are playing very near the end of the clock. Of course that is the way these games go - very normal.

I would like to make a suggestion though. It would be nice if the last person to turn in their turn, ran 2 turns a once. That way the game would not always be hanging up on the same person/people, and it would tend to move a bit faster. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Simultaneous turns later in the game could be a bit cumbersome. But at this early stage, turns are likely to only take a couple of minutes.

Part of that was my fault, apologies. Boston beat the yanks last night and I was in a forgetful haze of euphoria. (Plus the wife has guests staying over, so distractions abound) I shall be more attentive in the future!

Someone (not I!) needs to develop a taskbar app that monitors turn basis, red for no turn, green for go. Have it check 1/hr or whatever and be a pie chart with segments = nations, nations that have taken a turn go green and when full new turn. I almost wish I could code...anything.

Saint_Dude

Wasn't really trying to point the finger at anyone in particular. Just tying to think of how we can move things along a bit more.

I like Jutetrea's idea of a taskbar app. Thought I read about something like that in one of the other threads?

Gandalf Parker
April 21st, 2007, 03:39 PM
There is an app in the tools stickied post over in the Dom3 map/mod subforum

The chk page does tell you if your turn is ready. And most browsers have a way to refresh it on a regular basis.

Some people actually wait to be last so they can do two turns in a row. Sometimes its handy. Im still going to iron out that "musical chairs" game version (last person to do their turn always stales)

If someone really wants it, they can pm me an email address and I will have the game send an email when it hosts. Thats part of what the post-exec command switch is for. Ive also looked into IM, IRC, text messaging, and voice mails.. but lets hold it to emails for now.

Otherwise you can keep an eye on the check page at

I am not sure about reading those stats files (not sure if the file numbers correspond to turn numbers). But it looks like Atlantis has already staled several turns.

I realize that real life can intercede, but all these early stales are more than just slowing down the game, they are dooming Atlantis' chances (unless Cyborgmoses has some bloody brilliant stratagems up his sleeve). The fair people of Lanka have shown no hostility toward their border brothers and sisters, and wish no harm to them over the next year. We have been attacked when these nations could have expanded in unclaimed lands as we have in order to avoid provoking those of the lands around us.

What has been said is the fair plea.

Also, let it be known that the people of Lanka have many, many alliances with those that do not share our borders but do share borders with those around us. These that we have alliances with are in no threat of colliding with our forces for many years when the pack has been thinned.

So, you have a choice. To leave us alone and join with the strong and many, or.....

vfb
April 28th, 2007, 02:57 AM
The Nation of Mictlan admits to feeling guilty about attacking Lanka unprovoked. But while Lanka was busy concentrating on improving their research, our nation has been pursuing more martial avenues of development. It is not the fault of Mictlan that Lanka's army is weak.

The Prophet of Mictlan has consulted our God. He responded this way:

"Is it good blood sport when Centeotl brings Metzlti to fight together against Nanauatzin in the arena? When 100 fight against 50, then the blood of 50 will be spilt. But when 50 men of Centeotl fight 50 men of Nanauatzin, the blood of 100 may be spilt in a glorious and fair battle."

We are chastened by this parable. And we also look to the justice shown earlier to Mictlan, by the honorable nation of Helheim.

Mictlan will keep the single province of the Were Wood as a lesson to Lanka to keep its army as well maintained as its schools. Other than that Mictlan will commit no further aggressive acts against Lanka without just cause.

If Lanka disputes the strength of our armies, then we urge them to come meet us in Were Wood this month on the glorious field of battle. We are positive Lanka will be completely destroyed. As we write, both army groups of Mictlan converge on Were Wood.

Mictlan has no control over the actions of the nation of Abysia. But if Lanka chooses to fight Mictlan in Were Wood, and Abysia takes unbloodsportsmanlike advantage of the destruction of Lanka's army, then Mictlan will march North on Abysia in pursuit of greater blood sport!

If Abysia wishes to continue its war on Lanka on even terms, that is not our concern. And if Lanka makes peace with Abysia, and sends their army to die in our fields, we will build a great temple in honor of the courage of their dead warriors.

Signed in Blood,

Zotz, Prophet of Mictlan

(ooc Edit: Added the bit about no further unprovoked attacks on Lanka, since Zotz was kind of silly not to be clearer about that.)

The common ancestry that binds the hearts of Mictlan and Abysia, along with a common faith that dates back millenia has stricken the hearts of Abysians as well. Through messengers of lands with evil intent, Abysia was deceived into thinking Lanka had ill will at heart. Now it grieves the souls of the Lords of Abysia, that we raised hand against the peace loving neighbor that is Lanka. Abysia admits that it moved with far too much haste against his friend, and repents of this deed. Abysia offers its hand in peace, and as a token of good faith hath sent a gift of no small measure to the Lords of Lanka. In addition, Abysia concedes the northern passage provinces of Bergamum (196) and Pivotal (192) to allow Lanka's needed expansion east. Abysia further declares she will vacate the Great Plains without plunder, without pillage and without demanding tribute, having raised no militia. In addition, Abysia declares, if Lanka accepts, a pact of mutual defense. Whosoever attacks Lanka has attacked Abysia.

Let the world witness this day the ammends Abysia makes to Lanka. Let the world witness this day the contrite spirit and penitence of a nation who wrongfully believed the lies of others that hurt the innocent. Let the world judge who's heart is true. Abysia will not war with Lanka in future days, save Lanka be the first to attack. Let the world judge who shall be upright.

So say we all.

The Kings of Lanka bow to the peaceful gestures of Michtlan and Abysia and accept theirs pacts.

At the session of the large alliance, all of the nations have also agreed to accept the terms that Michtlan and Abysia have put forth, even though three nations thought that the actions against us were unjust. We have convinced them all that we are happy with the gestures that were made in the name of peace.

When the council of Mictlan saw that Abysia had offered peace to Lanka, a burden of guilt was lifted. Our warriors could engage in glorious battle with a free conscience, knowing that at least the balance of Nations was fairly matched, even if our armies were not!

However, Lanka has accepted our offer of peace, on the terms we proposed, so peace it will be.

That's the part I've often had it stuck on as well. Running the game in windowed mode makes it less serious when it dies, you can just open another window. If you End Process from Alt-Ctrl-Delete on the first one it will go away eventually.

Um, hello everyone by the way. I'll be back on my way now...

Saint_Dude

Like many of you, I have experienced the game locking up during the 'Getting Game Info' stage. However, I run the game in windowed mode, so it has never caused any serious problem. I can easily terminate the game process, re-open the game, and reconnect to the server (the second time is always fine).

That said, I just did my turn and didn't notice any problem at all.

This issue is not a huge deal, as long as I am able to squeeze my turns in before the deadline. The only thing that really annoys me about it is the fact that when my game hangs up like that, it is a PITA to try to exit out, it takes it a few minutes to close out on my computer, and sometimes I have to listen to a tiny piece of the song loop, so I have to shut my sound off.

Dear Nations of the World..

Currently, the humble nation of Lanka has an alliance with six other nations and wishes to find one more to create the majority alliance in the land.

The people of Lanka have been a peaceful nation with very few borders and have never initiated war with any other nation. We ask for you support against the Mictlan invaders as they attempt to breach our borders. They will be weak in the Southern and Eastern borders that they leave unguarded as they initiate an attack to their North on our peaceful nation.

Any nation who joins us in the fight against Mictlan and attacks their weak borders will have our bond in blood with us for many years and we will split all of the treasures that we gain from the vanquishing of the Michtlan forces. We have many nations that can vouch for the generosity of the Lankan Nobles.

Please call out your bond with us and know that we are the more trustworthy ally.

Our counsels have said that they would especially honor the great nations of Helheim and C'tis to make our pact a supermajority.

vfb
May 4th, 2007, 06:24 AM
Ah, this must be the "dangerous super-alliance" the Niefel Giants warned Mictlan about. But are they not included in this alliance themselves?

Pray tell, whom have the great Lanka allied themselves with? Do you know what happened to the previous group of nations who joined forces with Niefel against Ermor, only to find themselves betrayed? Your other friend, C'Tis appears hard pressed to hold on to the provinces they rule, and is fleeing into independent lands. We would welcome them to hasten their own destruction by entering into the lands of Mictlan.

Mictlan counts four nations among Niefel, Ermor, C'Tis, and Lanka. Who are the other three in your unholy cabal, since you claim six allies? Or is it that Niefel, Ermor, and C'Tis are so big compared to Lanka that you count each of them twice?

Know that the free nations of this Unlucky world are honorable, fair and noble! Lanka's weak attempts at bribery will not succeed.

OOC: Anyone know if we're going to be able to submit a turn, and what version to use?

My suggestion: Play with 3.06. That's the standard thing to do at this stage, and it can't break the server. In fact, keep playing with 3.06 until the server sends you a turn that you can't open using 3.06 - at which point you know you have to upgrade.

What is this chatter about Niefel being allied with the monkeys? It is insulting. We have we have not had any contact with Lanka, and in fact have been warning Mictlan about Lanka's claims of a super alliance.

We are very interested to find out if this super alliance is in fact a reality or merely a smoke screen put up by the monkeys to deter aggressors. If real, it poses a significant long term threat to all the other non-allied nations and steps must be taken to counter that aggregation of power.

We hereby declare: Assuming that there are indeed other nations allied with the Lanka, but they too cowardly to come forth and admit their devious agreements. We fully support Mictlan's efforts to wipe this earth clean of the monkey filth. Any nation that intercedes on Lanka's behalf in this struggle will be considered to be part of the hidden super alliance, and will find themselves the enemy of Niefel (and hopefully many other conscientious non aligned nations).

Some strange incongruities with the version change.

The Niefel giants just had a major battle with the Agarthans. In the battle replay we defeated the large province defense and killed 13/14 enemy units and 10/12 enemy leaders; at the same time we lost a handful of units and no leaders (and did not experience any afflictions to any of our leaders).

However, the battle stats presented in the messages box indicates that we killed 14/14 enemy units along with 7/12 enemy leaders, and conversely we lost a leader of our own. When I look at the army that is left over, it looks as though we did indeed lose a leader, and that one of our leaders picked up an affliction that he did not have in the last turn of the battle replay.

I rather prefer the battle replay version of events. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

I am thinking that the turn was generated prior to the patch (using 3.06 rules), but that the battle replay incorporates the patch and the new rules (blade wind is less effective with the patch). Should have waited a turn before picking that particular fight. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

In Mictlan, we have no cities, or sims, or other advanced techmologies. We believe R'lyeh has gone 'round the bend. This is somwhat confusing to us, since our prophecies indicate that R'lyeh should not lose all its marbles until both this age and the next have passed. Perhaps our calendar needs to be revised. Or perhaps it is as simple as a lack of oxygen. Come out into the fresh air and feel the wind in your face, starspawn.

The super alliance claimed by Lanka has proven to be a figment of their imaginations. Now they call all the wicked shadows to come tramp, tramp, tramp. Mictlan laughs to know that Lanka thinks shadows are something to be feared.

1. Thou hast trampled all over my flowers in my rest areas

2. Thou hast left thine empty banana peels on my sidewalks causing our young maidens to slip and fall.

3. Thou hast left Monkey Doo on my grass wherever thou walkest.

Stale or not the Agarthans are powerless. They have few leaders, and they cannot recruit as their caves are under siege. Their forces are impotent and their time in this world is limited regardless of the strategy that they employ. We would just as soon finish them off quickly before they grow more stale.

As for complaining. . . I was just commenting on the strange goings on with the version shift mid-game. I thought it amusing that the battle results had little to do with the battle replay. I would have thought that if some of the other nations were out fighting last month, they would have observed similar quirks. However, it is possible that the battle in question was particularly quirky due to all of the blade wind spells being cast (as this spell was specifically downgraded in the new version).

BTW - I had no problem logging onto the server, so if it was down, it appears to be back up.

No problem with Mictlan's ribbing. Just trying to emphasize that there have been some strange incongruities with the battle replays lately.

I had thought the incongruity was due to the version shift mid-game. But I was playing a new blitz today and experience similar oddities (the battle replay had nothing to do with the actual results). I was told that it may be because I am playing on a mac.

I wonder, is there anyone else in our group using a mac? And if so, have they experienced any odd behavior with the battle replay?

The Council of Sauromancers had a good laugh at the misguided proclamation of the Senile Kojus in the weekly Toastmasters Meeting.

This will be the day we all remember as the day the Witches of Hellheim runs back to their Capital with their brooms between their legs as the remnants of their shattered invading army scatter into the hills of C'tis heartland.

Perhaps the messengers of Hellheim are so ashamed of their defeat in which near a hundred of their glamored infantry and Knights were slaughtered by the C'tis Heavy Infantry.

To the world at large, here is the truth. There were two battles, aye. The main Hellheim Invading Army was crushed before it even reached the C'tis Capital. The second battle was 4 provinces away in the direction of the Hellheim heartland, and was composed of independent missile troops. Merely a diversion consisting of poorly trained chaff.

Any illnesses or diseases surely did not come from C'tis lands. Perhaps the nation of Hellheim should look into what their witches are brewing right under their noses instead.

OOC: Did you patch? My war battle replay and the actual army count after seems to tally. And it shows me as owning the province where the battle occured.

I was able to get my turn in, and I think I may have found a trick to doing it. I won't know if it worked or was just coincidence until next turn. What I did was I doubleclicked my shortcut for the game, it hung up and I doubleclicked the short cut again while the hung up instance was still hung up. The second instance of the exe I launched went straight to the game with no hesitation or hang ups.

It may have been coincidence, but if your hanging up, its worth a shot http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Mictlan offers our respects to the fallen warriors of Lanka, who fought honorably and valiantly on the field of battle. Many of Mictlan's most wondrous creations were destroyed at the tips of Lanka's swords.

And were it not for a minor miracle and a less than perfect combat AI, there would be far fewer jaguars on the Western plains today, and far more of the tiger demons.

In a strange coincidence, Mictlan heard tidings this month from the East, regarding the demise of the Ancient Ones who had only recently emerged from their caves deep beneath the surface of the earth.

The great Giants of Niefelheim have been couped up in their labs for many months, and have grown restless for adventure. At this very moment, they are sharpening their weapons and gathering their supplies to prepare for a march on Ermor.

Ermor is clearly a worthy adversary, and we expect that they will provide considerably more resistance than the docile pale ones. Nevertheless, our warriors would much rather die in glorious battle than to whither in old age in some dank and dusty lab.

After many hours of meetings with his advisors he has determined that information technology shall be banned within the realm. Seems that the pattern for the unable to connect is that one has to be currently connected, or attempting to connect before the other gets through. Foodstamps trick was to have one attempt at connection then immediately follow up with another attempt.

The southern jungles of Mictlan overflow with young warriors seeking to prove themselves in battle. We have no funds to support these recruits, and our our god has deemed them unacceptable sacrifices.

Mictlan has no choice but to send them off to war.

Helheim, you have been an honorable neighbor. It is with great sadness that we hereby cancel all pacts with you. Our armies march, so make your preparations accordingly. We would be overjoyed if you would agree to engage in battle earlier! Please just send us a message -- either a messenger or an invading army will do. Thanks. The script is already in the vaults of this forum (http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/threads/showflat.php?Number=496923) and the attachment gets changed whenever it is updated. A web server with PHP is needed, no database required. Got off the plane, got home, checked update page - Mictlan still needs to play. Checked again before going to sleep, Mictlan had played turn (little red asterick gone) but there were now zero little red asterick's.

Figured it was hosting, checked back a bit later..same thing.

Logged on with the laptop (cuz it seems that until the turn is uploaded each action is stored locally...so if I log on with my desktop before a turn is hosted I lose all the actions) and the game itself says Ermor hasn't played.

Signed,

The asterisk will be gone on the update page if the player downloads the turn. So my guess would be that Ermor downloaded his turn last night but did not play it. All you have to do is view your turn for it to show as played on the update page.

Gandalf Parker

I "touched" Ermors .2h file so that the web-check will properly reflect the games status.

If all you do is:

Connect
Download the Turn
Immediately Disconnect

then the turn status does not get hosed by strange timestamps. But if you:

Connect
Download the Turn
Look at the map while connected
Exit without saving

then the files get touched and the timestamps get out of whack.

Anyway, thanks for the extensions. Who wants to go back to 24 hours, and who would prefer to stay on 48?

It's taking a bit longer to shuttle units around. Not that Mictlan has any units of course, except for the militia I am trying to kill off. Expect if you are contemplating invading Mictlan. Then I have lots and lots of horrible, evil, dastardly units who will try to eat you for breakfast.

I'm in the mid/late game of a newbie game as Atlantis, and its a complete 180 from this game in terms of size, complexity and fun. Then I made the mistake of jumping in two other MP games... one with trying a bless strat with LA TC (sucks) and the other with picking the exact wrong scales with Pangaea (sucks)... so those will both be early defeats http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Im glad that the status page is being useful. I see many of the other servers coming up with versions also.

But come to think of it, I did put the email notification at the end of the post.sh (after hosting) and with all of the zipping and moving and swapping files it might have gotten abit long. C'Tis has borne the brunt of the Helheim assault through many months, so they deserve the land they will be getting. It is a hard fight, battling scores of glamorous heim warriors. C'Tis has done well, and deserves their reward of the Helheim capital.

There is no alliance of C'Tis and Mictlan that threatens the world. We are united in this fight by our common history of conflict with Helheim, though Mictlan chose to pay in land rather than battle Helheim, when first threatened.

That said, Helheim has been an honorable neighbor, and respected our pact once they received payment for their peace. We are sure their remaining warriors will defend their lands valiantly and bravely against our hordes and hordes of militiamen.

That is why my research was so low - I cannot afford for mages. In normal cicrumstanes, with moderate provinces (not hills, wastelands and forests only) Hellheim is unstoppable for the first 20 turns I belive. Movement 2 or 3, glamour ability (cut a bit in new patch) makes all other nations in an early stage an easy prey. Anyway - game was nice:)

If you do wish to make a donation, we will accept gold, gems, magic items and even blood slaves, though we have no use for them http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif.

Mictlan salutes the brave warriors of Helheim, who fought valiantly in their last stand against the forces of the Jungle.

Moving to a different motel tonite. Nervous cuz I don't know what if any internet I will have. I am suspicious of the new laptop's wireless capabilities. It doesn't work at this motel, but I am plugged into ethernet. I will have my old laptop, so maybe I can get on with it. What will happen if I have played a couple turns with the new laptop, but the turns have been skipped with the old. Will it just download the new turn on the old laptop and all is well?? OR will something be amiss?

Its only turn by turn. i.e. the .2h file uploaded by one laptop will overwrite an existing, but only for the current turn.

If you start a turn on one, then go to another without transferring the .2h file you essentially start over.
