Hi Meglobob:

Oh darn! I had intended to invite all the players in WOOF, but unintentionally forgot you. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

I think we could add one more player. That would still keep it at about 13 provinces per player. What would be your top 4 choices for nations? They will be "assigned" according to preferences of players tonight.

The story of my life! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

2nd:- Helheim
3rd:- Vanheim
4th:- R'lyeh

Thanks for letting me in.

The nations have been "assigned". Most players got their first choice.

Sorry to Dakar for not waiting longer. I am an eager beaver, but there are plenty of nations left from which to choose. Let me know which you would like. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

I am thinking of changing the victory condition to

either 5 out of 14

What do other players think?

I figured that in WOOF, the victory condition is 5 out of 12, and that is working out well for an interesting game that will probably eventually win with a "real" victor opposed to a draw.

Boron

5 out of 14 seems indeed enough, this way you cannot turtle + build up forever but are eventually forced to fight http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif.

Yea. WOOF's a good guideline I reckon, 5 capitals is pretty tough to get, yet not impossible.

PashaDawg
April 29th, 2007, 01:07 PM
Wraithlord sent me an email supporting 6 VP's.

Migaaresno supports 5.

Jurri
April 29th, 2007, 01:13 PM
I think 5 is plenty. It should help avoid the tedium of the very late game, yet it's also enough to prevent any instant-wins: since the VPs are securely in capitals, you need to fight for every single one of them.

PashaDawg
April 29th, 2007, 07:51 PM
I think the majority of players who have chimed in voted for 5 VP. So, I will change it to that.

Yes. I will upgrade with this turn. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

If there are horrible problems, I have back ups of turns, and a copy of the game in 3.06 still, and we can revert.

Cainehill
May 4th, 2007, 03:17 AM
Unfortunately, if you install 3.08 after simply backing up the executable, as with previous patches, it isn't so easy to revert to 3.06, since the patch overwrites multiple files.

And on the Windows platform, we didn't get a zip file that would let us _know_ multiple files were getting changed.

So people - hope you backed up the entire dominions3 directory, or like me, you'll have to dig up the original CD and manual to reinstall for other games.

Thanks IW - you're the best!

Is the message from host about Lanka "could be cheating" something to be taken seriously or is it just a bug?

EDIT, seeing as Boron is leading Lanka, I think the message can be ignored.

Jurri
May 4th, 2007, 08:05 AM
I would hazard that it's some change in the patch with regards to Lanka causing flags to go up.

Cainehill: lighten up http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif I think the files are changed mostly to include the new units and flags and such. Indeed, if you just switch the old .exe back, the game starts up properly and displays the old version number, and doesn't show the new nations. This has been the case with earlier patches, too, despite them changing multiple files, I believe. So, at least on the surface it is enough to just back up the executable. So, I at least would be surprised if it didn't let you play older version turns by just changing the executable.

I am certain that the warning of Lanka Cheating is a false alarm. Boron is a sneaky Bavarian, but he's not a cheater.

Boron
May 4th, 2007, 03:55 PM
Wow weird. My uneducated guess would be that the message displayed because some lanka units got more expensive in 3.08, so maybe this triggered the cheat detection. I have some Palankashas who costed 45 gold in 3.06 and now cost 55 gold.
Still bizarre though.

This exact same cheat detection got triggered in another MP I was in when we patched from 3.04 to 3.06. I think Boron's point about the units gold change or something similar triggers it.

I am 100% sure there was no cheating on Borons part. He is a sneaky german thou... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

The Holy Oracles from the order of fire and warfare have already informed our forces just can’t compete whit them. Our men are now preparing to recruit as many men, stock supplies and call for help as this might be the last messengers witch can travel to all corners of the world from the fortress.

Please, to whoever reads this message, don’t let our race perish so sudden. It cant not happen this way, not since we crawled on this earth so long. Sent troops to drive the Evil our. Or help is in any other way.

Don't be upset http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif, I had to attack someone, I was surrounded and had few provinces.

IF I had known you had a awake dragon and that the CB mod made farstrike the deadlist low level spell ever (it kills your leaders/commanders/mages with ruthless efficency), I really would not have...

Truth is, I was also surprised at just how efficient farstrike was, the battle replays showed your leaders like ducks in a shooting range http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Making Farstike the titan of low research spells certanly wasn't the intention, I'd be interested to hear more about what happened with it. The main boost CB gave to it was 100 precision... I wasn't thinking about that being used to assassinate commanders, but I guess it's a bit of a problem for the nations with small troops and big mages.

This was exactly the problem QM, my pans were behind my 100+ maenads/other troops who were size 2. My pans are size 3.

In one battle where I fielded 10 pans to all cast swarm/howl etc...farstrike took out 2-3 of those pans in the 1st combat round before they even got 1 spell off. You would expect 27hp pans to last longer than 1 round when behind 100-200 troops. Especially early in the game.

WraithLord
June 6th, 2007, 04:08 AM
Farstrike was indeed useful in killing Pans, on the counter side there were battles with Pans involved in which the Pans weren't targeted by it but rather chaff like wolves and maeneds.

QM, I have all my BARK turns saves so if you want you can analyze for your self just how useful farstrike became.
INHO, it became just as useful as it should be, and not because I have enjoyed it as Marverni. Had I played Pan I would have countered it by fielding driads instead of Pans, or Using white centaurs, meaning this spell adds another choice to early game strat. which imo is nice.

Hm i have new problems too. The power outage which destroyed my modem+splitter seems to have done even more damage.
Today i contacted the service personnel of my isp, but since my isp was on a strike for several weeks they have to do all the work which amassed meanwhile, so i will likely have to wait several weeks till the isp-technicans finally repair the damage.

Till then i can suddenly at any time lose my internet access for several hours, or maybe even completely. So i will try to find a sub also and i suggest that in case i do not send my turn in time that pasha could be so kind to pause 1 day then, if i do not send my turn meanwhile hopefully a sub i find takes over then. Would it be ok if a player who already participates subs for me?

I think it is best that no sub act as proxy for more than one player.

I encourage players to diligently find subs when appropriate. Putting a game on hold for long periods of time can lead to player disengagement. And, a bad case of the P.D.'s can kill a game. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

OK, folks, here's a few things:

-- deadline is 9 pm Thursday, EDT; I'm in the same time zone as Pasha, so no changes to the schedule
-- I don't check my personal email or these forums during work hours, so any problems that crop up late on one workday will have to wait until after work the next day
-- it would be nice if everyone were prompt or early for the first hosting, in case there are problems (at least the Thursday hosting has more time available for fixes)
-- I will try to email or post a turn status, but I may not, so don't rely on them!

That OK with everyone?

Status right now: I have orders from: Arco, Atlantis, Niefel, and R'lyeh (Edit) and Maverni

OK, I received QM's retry with no problem. Next time we will make a burnt offering to the gods of the aether first.

Turn 38 should be out. Next hosting, 9pm EDT Sunday. Rev. Zombie, let me know if you need more time.

We have been driven out of the last corner of the seas by the hordes of R'lyeh, and now the opportunistic Caelum has seen fit to snatch up our dry refuges, even now beseiging our last castle, the old home of the Abysians. Though Barathrus guards our citadel, our people riot in their despair, and regime change has been demanded with the disastrous end of our wars.

So, the Basalt Kings and speakers to Omphalepsis have been driven from our government by popular uprising, and replaced with an AI People's Council. We may die, but we die free!

What???

Could you please elaborate. It sounds like a good story, though of course I share your grief.

djo
September 17th, 2007, 09:12 PM
At one point in time, C'tis had two underwater empires separated by a peninsula. I was trying to get Thog the wrym and my prophet from the east to the west undersea empire, and I tried to rush them across the peninsula in the same month an invader was probably going to take the peninsula. So I set them to retreat, reasoning they had a 50-50 chance of retreating to the west instead of east.

Of course they didn't, and of course I forgot to reset their orders, and of course several turns later someone threw a horror at me (Caelum is my guess, they ate my western undersea empire), and they ran out of places to go.

This is just another exhibit in why I am not a feared opponent: insufficient attention to detail!

I'll be out in 1-2 turns. It's been fun, see you in the next one...

Congrats to my semi-ally. Did he liberate my C'tisian capital from the evil Sauromatian invaders?

Jurri
October 12th, 2007, 12:37 PM
Whoa! That was a bit surprising http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif I was sure QM would airdrop another 30+ seraphs and ream my army but good. It sure was dang hard to get the last capital: well defended Bluebird, QM et Izaqyos!

I had quite literally nothing at all in reserve, too, so had my army been repelled that would have been it for me. When I started attacking Pasha, I for a while planned to cast to cast Sea of Ice with lotsa gems to defend against the gangbang he was trying to scare me off with, and just sit it out in the ocean (casting Wrath of the Sea once gems permitted: on a map that's mostly coast it would have been fun to try), but when it didn't come, I decided to risk it all on a mad dash to the nearest capital.

All in all it was one of the more difficult games that have ended in my favor (and certainly the most close), beginning with that punk Ewierl repelling my assault and ending with the uncanny Wraithlord very nearly ruining me with his 'mistakes' http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif Early R'lyeh sure is crappy, the only reason I did this well because the map has so much water. And because certain players were too passive for their own good http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif With a victory condition like this, you gotta attack, attack, attack.

djo: the last of my capitals was the vile Arcoscephalean den of sin. Ygorl never did attack me, unless those Disease demons were his instead of Boron's.

Anyway, off to see Lulu... Thanks, Pasha, for the hosting and thank you all for the game!

Ygorl
October 12th, 2007, 12:45 PM
Those disease demons were indeed courtesy of me. Izaqyos told me that you were about to take 162, thus ending the game, so I had to send something nasty your way. Too bad it wasn't enough. Good game, everyone, especially the victorious squid-lords. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Yeap, some players (me included) were too passive in this game, yet you had some balls there to go against everyone. You know, I think I could have taken one VP from you, one of the ex Neifel VPS, but I chose not to do so because I wanted the bulls eye to be painted on your back http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
Obviously, I miscalculated strategically.

Actually, I that and more I could have sent in, but like wraithlord, I miscalculated. Hindsight is 20/20 http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif.

But congrats on the win, you certainly had to work hard to project that much power on land. I do wonder how the situation would have shaken down if your last attack had failed, given all the superpower's teleport powers, the VP chaos could get quite wild if everyone was feelinng frisky.

Oh, I almost forgot to ask, does anyone have any comments on how CB balancing worked out this game?

WraithLord
October 17th, 2007, 06:39 PM
I have noticed balance effects mainly in the item forging area. I liked the changes to empowerment items and to gem generating items.

Jurri
October 18th, 2007, 01:49 PM
Hah, I totally hated the D3-requirement for skull staves. I don't like the other booster-item cost-increases either. On the whole I still have mixed feelings for the mod: there's a lot of things in it that make the game more fun, but there is also stuff that creates unnecessary frustrations or that don't do anything for the fun-factor, except cause annoyance when you notice it's been changed. I would much prefer the mod took a more streamlined approach, instead of fiddling with every little thing.

quantum_mechani
October 18th, 2007, 03:36 PM
Well, liked or disliked, the booster nerfs are gone in the current version. And actually I don't think CB messes with gem gen items.

As for streamlined... it's hard to be streamlined when there are so many options to be balanced. Nerfs are the most 'streamlined' balancing option, and everyone hates those.
