Flight directions

When planning an airborne operation is the direction on the mini-map a set feature? In other words, can the path be changed before arrival, and/or is the path dependent upon the departure path, or the path on the map at the time of the execution of the operation?
For example can I set the airborne path during setup, then change the path for use in spotter operations without affecting the othe air ops (including say level bomer missions)?

Whatever pair of directions you have currently set will be used for any air missions plotted subsequently as and until you change them.
