Version 3.08's just been released! Woohoo!

Personally I rarely look at the stickied posts, so it's easy to miss some things - like a new patch coming out. So I thought I'd make a non-sticky post to tell everyone. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Thought I might add a couple of tips as well, to minimise the chaos in multiplayer games when a new patch is released:

1) Make a copy of your dominions folder before you patch. Call it "dominions3_06" or something. You'll then have the choice to play using either the old or new version, so that you'll still be able to take turns with any MP games that don't immediately get updated.

2) DON'T connect to a multiplayer server using the new patch unless you've already heard that it's been updated. As soon as someone using 3.08 connects to a server running 3.06 it'll crash (at least, I'm assuming this is the case judging from the last patch).

By the way if any more experienced players disagree with these tips, feel free to correct me.

Excellent tip! I'm using this right now.

Just a quick bit of advice: Don't expect that the only changes are what the Devs have been kind enough to list. I started getting attacked by madmen after version 3.06 and I've never seen them before. They might have been there from the start, but then again, there might be quite a few such "little odds-and-ends" the Devs failed-or even forgot-to mention.

Maybe your version went insane?

Sounds like somebody's hitting you with Imprint Souls.

Yep. That one produces madmen and flagellants, led by a mad priest. Always been in the game.

Another tip: As Edi pointed out in another post, the technique of only backing up the exe rather than the whole folder won't work with this patch as it has with others, since other files are changed. The best way to keep a copy of v3.06 is just to copy the whole folder.

Blah. So, since IW couldn't be bothered to _mention_ this, it's screwed up my (and other people's) installs. And since they so-cleverly used an .exe to update the Windows version (instead of a zip like the other platforms) we didn't even get to see the contents to know it.

F-ing lovely.

Whats the deal with everyone using _ to add emphasis to words nowadays?

This is a little overboard.

I don't think it's IW's responsibility to give out that sort of info. Most video game patches don't tell you the files they update, nor should you have been surprised that multiple files were updated. An EXE is the standard method of almost all companies to update their games, and I prefer it. And finally - reinstalling the game and putting on the 3.06 patch takes about 15 minutes, so it's not like you are completely screwed.

Totally off-topic, but it's been Internet slang for several years at least (_underline_ or *bold*). Even more off-topic, if you use Gmail's chat you'll notice that *bold* gets converted to bold text and _underline_ gets italicized.

The first time _I_ saw it was on _these_ forums. It reminds me of the the finger quotes that Lundberg uses when he is talking to Peter in office space.

It's been used in newsgroups for a long time. It might've appeared here because the CSIPGS newsgroup was pretty active about Dominions a long while back, and I understand there's lots of overlap.

The IW patch for Windows actually does let you see what files are updated, if you bother to click on the "Show Details" bit.

Yet another tip on which version to use for MP games: ALWAYS use the old version if you can. Even if the server has upgraded you should send it your turn using v3.06. Once you get a new turn back that's been generated using v3.08 you'll have no choice but to use v3.08 as v3.06 won't open the turn. So:

- Try to take your turn using v3.06. If you can, that's good.
- If it won't work, use v3.08.

I'm fairly sure this is foolproof.

Exactly, and that's what the game client should do aswell: try to connect with a packet like the very first client used to send to find out the version number of the server, then complain if the server's version number is lower than the client's "real" version number. I really wonder why they let it happen that so many games get blown up by high-version clients. That's one way of forcing every server to upgrade, but it's braindead from a programming perspective... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

Funny, I used the so-clever exe to update the Windows version and I saw exactly what was updated. Oh yeah... _Blah_. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Is it just me or do the two new nations seem sorta 'bare' compared with,.. say,.. Lanka? I'm sure there are people out there who will be all over them, but to me they're kinda dull. Just personal taste.

The rest of the changes in the update are highly appreciated, although I was expecting more in the way of fixes to be honest.

Edi

Sombre, there is a second new patch coming out with a far shorter quiet interval than between 3.06 and 3.08, so there will undoubtedly be more fixes there. Might be that there will also be more related material for Eriu and Tir na n'Og, but that's something only JK and KO would know.

Sombre

I think it's more the theme of Eriu and Tir that doesn't appeal to me, which won't change with content.

Glad to hear about the upcoming fixes though. Maybe they can make Reverend Zombie happily play with his Tomb Wyrms.

That one is on the list and it's going to get a color code. I'm pruning the shortlist thread right now so I can compile a properly organized 3.08 list of issues.

Just FYI, the Fir Bolg Champion commander only costs 13g/12r.

Well, I found another new thing-what seems to be an additional international spell called "Summon Tartarian Smith"-Construction 9 I believe. I've never seen that one before, has anyone else? Has anyone tried it out yet?

MaxWilson

I think you must be running a mod. I checked all the 9th level spells (I'm LA Agartha at the moment) and didn't see the spell.

Are you certain? If you accidentally had the mod enabled, or were checking a game that was started when the mod was enabled, it will always enable the mod and show the spell in that game. Complete non-issue for the bug list until you do some more checking on your mods.

HoneyBadger
May 7th, 2007, 02:14 PM
That's a possibility. I'll have to check, but I haven't updated my files for a while now, so if it's in there, I'll be very surprised. In any case, it's a nice, professional effort, since it didn't look out of place among the other spells.

Then you should better specify which nation you're playing and at what age?
