View Full Version : Version 3.08 Newbie game (finished)
lch
May 5th, 2007, 07:44 AM
Since my server is patched to 3.08 now and I plan to host more games soon, I'm opening another multiplayer game. This game is supposed to be for newbies. If you already have had lots of multiplayer experience then please leave the slots open to new players. I won't play myself, but I'll watch the game as a spectator. /threads/images/Graemlins/icon10.gif TCP/IP game, not PBEM.
These are the rules:
Host interval will be 48 hours, quickhosting enabled. The first dozen turns shouldn't take that long, though, see if you can play one turn every day.
If you are going to have to take a break from the game for whatever reason, then inform me about it. If you are going stale for two turns, I will search for a substitute player for you.
If you want to set yourself to AI, then ask here if somebody else wants to continue playing for you before doing so.
Everybody has to prepare his pretender offline and send me that file via email, including his password.
Make sure that you set a password for your pretender! If I have everyone's pretenders, I will start the game.
Talking about the game in this thread is encouraged, people who try to roleplay get bonus points. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/cool.gif
Don't take this game too serious though, it's supposed to be fun.
Now for the goodies:
Vanilla game with the 3.08 version, everything set to default. No Mods.
We will use the Parganos map, so I'm looking for 6-8 players. I will make sure that nobody will start on that island unless his nation is amphibian or has commanders with the sailing ability.
The game will be in (early age or) middle age, to see the new 3.08 nations (Tír na nÓg and) Eriu in action. Edit: It will be middle age
The game will have auto-notification via email when a new turn starts.
The game will have a status webpage where you can see who has already done his turn, who hasn't, and how much time is left.
If you're interested in joining then post here with the age (early or middle) you want to play and the nations you'd want to play for both of the ages (can be different nations). I expect that the game will fill up over the weekend and I hope that I get your pretenders by Wednesday at the latest. I'll update the main post later on.

Bluebird: voted MA, Eriu (MA) - pretender received
Mow: Abysia (MA) - pretender received
Lily: voted MA, Mictlan (EA) or Machaka (MA) - pretender received
jutetrea: voted EA, Tir na n'og (EA) or Pangea (MA) - pretender received

My vote is for mid age, no desicion on teams just yet. Maybe Magrinon.
Eldanesh
May 5th, 2007, 11:14 AM
Alright, I'll say Lanka, land of demons for early age, and Magrinon for Mid Age. Ry'leh my favorite but I don't feel I can play them well enough in DOM3 just yet.
lch
May 5th, 2007, 11:20 AM
Okay. You can playtest a little till we start the game and if you feel like playing R'lyeh instead and nobody took it then you can still switch. As soon as we have 6 people together I'll make preparations for the game. If somebody else drops by this thread then and we get 8 players in total, even better.

Hi, I have a friend who I want to get addicted to the game. He is an utter newbie. May I register two players for the game? For him and me?
Eldanesh
May 5th, 2007, 12:38 PM
U'd have to use the same comp, I've tried it on lanning and u can't use just 1 key.
lch
May 5th, 2007, 12:42 PM
I expect that Bluebird does have two copies. I will check the game for duplicate keys before starting it to prevent it from getting screwed up.
Bluebird
May 5th, 2007, 01:39 PM
Sure - to be precise: I have purchased 4 copies and resold one of them to the friend - so there should not be any key colision, but thanks for the warning. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Hmm, I expected this game to be already filled up with players, maybe I was too restrictive. So, instead of requiring that you're not playing in other games already, now I'll just ask that you only join if you can really consider yourself still a newbie to MP gaming.
Lily
May 6th, 2007, 08:36 AM
I'm currently playing in my second MP game so I'm not a complete newbie. I'd be keen to play in this game, but feel free to say no if you'd prefer people who've played less.
lch
May 6th, 2007, 09:04 AM
Nah, that's fine by me. Just say which age you want to play and a national preference for both of the ages.
Lily
May 6th, 2007, 10:10 AM
Cool, thanks. I'd like to play EA Mictlan or MA Machaka, I don't mind which.
jutetrea
May 6th, 2007, 11:18 AM
Same here, in my first 2 MP right now. So up to you.
EA Nief or Tir
MA Pan or Arco
Pref EA
Lily
May 6th, 2007, 04:13 PM
I've heard that EA Niefelheim can be quite overpowered. Trying to fight against an early rush with blessed Niefel Giants sounds like it might not be much fun for new players. Personally I'd vote not to have them in the game. If jutetrea is happy to play Tir n'a Nog I think that might be better. It'd be good to see one of the new nations in action anyway.
jutetrea
May 6th, 2007, 06:13 PM
Kind of agree, but I've never played a bless strategy and wanted to try one. Also, one of the game I'm in I think I'll be facing them soon *shudder*
S'all good though I'd love to try out the new nation in MP. Only played them a few times in SP so far.
lch
May 6th, 2007, 06:34 PM
Okay, I've booked you with Tir now. I'd like to see how the new races are going to fare, too, after all. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
Since I never heard anything back from davegg I'm still waiting for one or more players. Could we already fix the age in which the game is going to be, EA or MA? Then you could already start designing your pretenders and playtest a little.
jutetrea
May 6th, 2007, 07:07 PM
Vote EA
Lily
May 6th, 2007, 07:52 PM
I've been playing SP Machaka today so now I'm keen on playing the game in MA. That said, if I'd been playing Mictlan I'd be all keen for EA so I guess it doesn't make too much difference to me which era we play.
So that's a vote for MA but not a particularly strong one.
Bluebird
May 7th, 2007, 05:41 AM
I vote for MA, as EA is more tricky for newbies with weak troops and magic as a very important factor. So, my vote is for MA, too.
BTW: I would prefer Eriu - and if that is not available - then Man.
Siever
May 7th, 2007, 04:30 PM
I'd like to play. This is my 2 MP.
I vote MA and I prefer T'ien Ch'i or Vanheim

May 7th, 2007, 04:47 PM
Okay, it looks like this is going to be a game set in the Middle Age. Bluebird, can I get a confirmation in this thread from your friend that he's going to play, and his preferences?

Hey - first, I am not a really good player, because I never invest enough time in my games. Second, I am just joining because I want to play together with that friends of mine (whom I have to kick today to make a statement about his preferred nation), and third, I will play an easy, non-agressive game, trying out some new stuff, so please be gentle.

The godfather, now operating under the banner of the Mindlords? Well, it seems like we have enough people now and I don't want to stall the start any further. It looks like this will be a middle age game, so I will emphasize the nation that have been chosen so far. Please design your pretender and send it to me by mail. I'll PM you my email address.

Create your pretender in the game, "Game Tools" -> "Create Pretender God", then when you are done (don't forget to set a password!) look in the "newlords" folder in your savedgames directory. Send me the file which was created for your pretender, mid_marignon_0.2h or something like that.
cupido2
May 8th, 2007, 05:47 PM
You have to create a pretender god in the "game tools". Once you created it, send the file (it is in the savegame/newlords folder) to the e-mail-adresse you received. Don't forget to create it for the right age and your nation you're playing and give it a password.

Sensori, I'm sorry for telling you that my game is "supposed to be for newbies" and letting those others in, and I'll never do it again. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/redface.gif
Honestly, I can't know for sure if other players are newbies or not, and even people that only kept playing SP constantly may be better than other players who did MP before. Siever and Eldanesh might be qm and Gandalf Parker in disguise for all I know, I have no idea. So I have to trust others when I ask them to "only sign up if you can call yourself a newbie". I'll start another game soon for Saint_Dude and you are especially invited to join that one.
Can we be friends again, now? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smirk.gif

sent god again to karsten because i forgot to correctly set password for the last god.
As for the newbie-only debate, i play single-player (since dom PPP) but have only played two or three times multiplayer, and never with dom3. So if i this mean i am not a clean newbie please remove me from the game and let some of the more true newbies take my seat.
Sensori
May 9th, 2007, 05:02 PM
No, it's not that, it's just that Ich told me that I'm not newbie enough to join the game and let others who've played the games too join. I'm not saying that anyone who's already in the game should be dropped now because I've been so horribly wronged by Ich. ;ppp

Actually, if I'd want to be nitpicking: what I said in the IRC channel was "Sensori, the game is supposed to be for newbies" - no more and no less IIRC... You then quickly decided on your own to remove your request to join the game, so I assume that you don't consider yourself a real newbie!? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
Sensori
May 9th, 2007, 05:56 PM
That's not true. I decided to remove my request after this:
<lch> Sensori, Bluebird isn't a newb, I know, I don't know why he signed up for this... but as he adds two players to the game and I'm still looking for players, I can't refuse
AND THIS!
<lch> or maybe I let you in and you restrict to a 1on1, Bluebird and you :3
You said that Bluebird isn't a newbie, but you'd put me to duel with him, so you pretty much claimed that I'm not a newbie in the process as well. :OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

May 10th, 2007, 03:39 AM
Hmm - ok, because Sensori is making so much noise: I was looking for a game where Mow and I could join. Mow is a real utter newbie, having just maintained a single game of mine for 2 turns while I was away. So, I was just about to create an own game when I discovered Ich's offer and asked if we could join.
I do fully understand that this is a newbie game, where I participate mostly because I want to play with Mow and I can do a little bit of coaching for everybody: I will give feedback to the other players and play defensive.
This is Ich's game, and I do not think that there is a reason for him to justify himself. The set of players has probably developed over time, and there is not consisted rule to justify it anyway.
If he thinks that I am unbalancing the game, he could tell me any time and Mow and I would withdraw, no hard feelings. But the goal of this game is to learn Dom3 and to have fun for everybody, and that is the way that I will play http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
lch
May 10th, 2007, 08:34 AM
As Sensori wrote, he's just pulling a leg here. I just hoped that Newbies could enjoy their first MP game and have some fun and success even with "weak" MP tactics without being pummeled to death by turn 5-10. As long as that's the case, I don't mind. Should you start a savage bloodbath among them I might emulate LA R'lyeh's insanity and change some of your orders before I host a turn, maybe. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
We're waiting for Mow's pretender, then I'll start the game.
Mow
May 10th, 2007, 10:35 AM
Hmm.. I had problems to download the update. Sorry for the delay.
My pretender is on the way.
lch
May 10th, 2007, 04:05 PM
Okay, the game has started now. Everybody should have received a message from the host with the info how to connect to the server etc. - if you have not received the message then please check your Spam folder and add the email address of the host to your Whitelist. If you can't even find it in your Spam folder then report it here.
The timer is set for 48 hours per turn, if you all are done before that then it will automatically host the new turn even before that. So better check back on the game once per day. In case you won't have time to do your turns in time because you'll be travelling or for whatever other reason, please leave a message here in the thread in advance and send me an email (you can just reply to the host messages).
Have a good game and have fun, everybody!
P.S.: In case some other game already uses the same name, please tell me about it and I'll change it.

Hmmm... I've greylisting on my mailserver. And your mailserver tried to deliver the mail only once (10:31:45) and then never again.
Might it be that the mail server you use do not handle RFC correct?
lch
May 11th, 2007, 08:03 AM
I'm using nbSMTP (http://nbsmtp.ferdyx.org/) over a smtp relay server for the turn notifications. It is only called once, that's correct. I could switch back to sendmail if you prefer that, although I don't trust it that much.
lch
May 12th, 2007, 11:41 AM
Actually, it seems as if even nbSMTP is resending emails:

seems that arcor has a bit buggy mail setup. They seems to send out every mail only after more than 4 hours. Then the greylisting ticket is not valid anymore. Also it seems to use different senders for the same mail.
Well, anyway, I got the information from Bluebird as you could see.

May 12th, 2007, 05:46 PM
Mow, I can switch back to the local sendmail if you like, I just thought the smtprelay by arcor might be more reliable.
Eldanesh, that's what I wish for all the games that I'm in, too, but I don't think it's too easy. Most of the times people are living in different timezones (US/Europe/Asia) and have duties and ligations which conflict with those that others might have. Waiting for the host to hand out the next turn can be very boring during the first 10 turns where nothing much happens, but you'll have to live with that. As soon as you get in contact with your neighbors it's going to get interesting. If the game moves too slow for you then you should join the #Dominions IRC channel on irc.gamesurge.net and look for people who want to play a blitz game with you.

I found it a bit hard to see where the boundaries lines between the provinces were drawn on the map as they were pretty faint, so I had a go at changing the contrast on the tga file. It seems to have worked quite well and the boundary lines are much clearer. I've attached the modified file in case it'd be of use to anyone else. You'll want to back up the existing parganos.tga so that it doesn't get overwritten by the new version.
Edit - the site seems to be really slow and I don't think the attachment works. It took about 10 minutes to get the post to appear so I'll try and fix the attachment when the site's running quicker.

I haven't heard from cupido that he's going to take a time out, so I assume that he'll play his turn in time.
If that is in 30 hours then I won't turn off the timer, if it's today I'll extend the timer to allow the people that are out of town till Sunday to get their turns in.

The north is tense as well.

I'm sorry to have to announce a bad thing (in my opinion): My host is changing from Linux based to Windows based. Not my decision and I can't do much about it, but let me tell you that I don't like it at all. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/mad.gif While it should be theoretically possible for me to get all the nice things back that I have right now (sendmail, webserver, don't know about cronjobs and multiplexers like screen) my trust in Windows as a serious multiuser system is quite low. I don't expect that it would be possible to login graphically (or otherwise?) with more than one connection, I have no idea. I will either try to get my stuff on the Windows system or else use a linux box that I am administrating at my office, or something.
If for some reason you can't connect to the game server anymore (because the DNS records will prolly be changed) then try the current IP: 88.198.59.162
If that doesn't work anymore, too, then I guess the game is on hiatus... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

About 4 hours left on the timer with Machaka left to move. Should I reset the timer so that Lily can get her turn in? Her position seems rather futile, being overrun by three other nations, but she can still wreak some havoc before she goes down. And she might even make a miraculous comeback. (I've seen that happen in another game I've been in)
In case you don't want to play anymore and your position is helpless, please set yourself to AI. And if you need more time to do your turns, since you've arrived at turn 40 now, I can extend the timer a little bit. To 52 hours, for example.

No problem, end games can be very very difficult to prepare, especially when you're in a good position. Takes loads of time. I have to say, I pictured you as one of the weakest nations when I monitored the game (the first 20-25 turns) but your excessive use of diplomacy seem to have paid off well. Stage 1? I hoped that was the whole plan... I wasn't too happy with the the-spell-that-shall-not-be-named anyway, but I feel a bit uncomfortable now. What is Cor up to? Will R'lyeh after playing over 6 month survive turn 155 or will it be beaten by a substitute player who inherited the kingdom of Man? Is there a way to kill a Tartarian monster? Why the heck are there 400 water elementals in that sea provinces of his? Why are those darn phantasmal warriors so strong and aren't dispelled by the eye of the void? Where have my gems gone?! So many questions!
Cor2
November 20th, 2007, 06:45 AM

Hundreds of gems over multiple turns, maybe... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
The reason you didn't get much out of the Nexus was that Cor2 had to hold back on doing anything that required gems. Now that yours is down and his is up, he can freely spend all those gems that he has been storing up for so long.
But yeah, I am kinda amazed how Cor2 thinks that he has only a slight advantage in this game. Ever since you're the only two nations left, Man definitely has a lot of aces on his side, what with the elemental queens, Tartarians, unique items etc.

I had a crone casting charm. She charmed both the manticores. They didn't really stand a chance against a fully kitted tartarian anyway.

Or we make an agreement against cruelty and act as idols for other games:
Treaty
We, the noble nations of Man and R'lyeh agree hereby to the following points
1)Weapons of massdestruction like the Tartarians and the items that support the weapons of massdestruction like the Chalice and the Aegis are considered unmoral and inhuman and are herefor banned.
2) Slavery is considered a crime against humanity so all blood slaves have to be freed within 1 turn.
3) Weapons, skills or magic that mingles with the mind of beeings, be they living or undead, like Master enslave or charm are considered as slavery and are herefor forbidden.
4) The right for life and propriety is granted. Only artifical and mindless beeings are allowed to fight in battles. All artifacts found or obtained from the opponent have to be given back at once.
5) The civil population must stay untouched under all circumstances. Every spell or artifact that harms the population of a province and all pillaging and blood hunting is strictly forbidden.

December 4th, 2007, 04:05 PM
Hmm. While this is brilliant. We must refuse. Although we really like #3 we are in contrvention of all the rest. I believe that Man's total count of constructs is around 30. It would make for a very short war. On the other hand we suspect that Rlyeh has a huge stockpile of Golems.
This is a holy war after all. It will decide the fate of all living things on the world for the rest of eternity (or until dominions 4 comes out). Any maens are justified.
*rips up document* This is total war!

The trial by combat idea wouldn't work because I have the Champion's trident already. That commander has to go and he is far from my best.
I say we trade the chalice until someone runs out of gems, its mine next.
Are you tired of the game? you can always concede. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/fear.gif
cupido2
December 5th, 2007, 05:28 AM
Would discarding the trident work?
No, no, don't get me wrong. I always fight to the end of a game (even in that game where I was Lanka and my only province for about 20 turns was a swamp with 0 income, lol, that teaches you modesty), I just try to win by all the means I have (diplomacy is all that you left me).
Btw I read a thread about communions and didn't get it what was written there. I remember that in my first mp (where you were Arco and I Abysia) you used those communions. So, how does that work exactly and how is that secret magic buff calculated?
Cor2
December 5th, 2007, 06:01 AM
For ever 4 (i think may be 5 or 6) communicants the effective path level of the master raises by one. It will not be shown in the battle but it will have an effect on strength of spells as well a fatigue that is accumulated.
The fatiuge from the master is spread out among communicants ( the master will still get a little fatigue). It is very easy to kill the communion slaves from fatigue. So its better to have alot of slaves and only one or two masters.
Any personal effect spell that is cast by the master (such as twist of fate or fire shield) effects the communicants as well.
Communicants will cast spells if they act before the master so its best to script them to do nothing.
Is that what you wanted to know? Does that make sense?
Discarding the trident by suicide would work.
I will think about it. I do have a contender or two.
cupido2
December 5th, 2007, 06:34 AM
Yes, thank you. Just two more questions: So it doesnt matter what magic path the slaves have to increase all the master's path? Is it possible to have let's say normal commander or scouts without magic paths to be slaves and the master's spell level is still increasing?
Oh, you can't throw the trident away normally?
Well, we could of course change the prize for an arena deathmach win. How about the warranty of keeping the Chalice for 5 rounds? (Hmmm does poking out the eyes of a commander make him immune to the Aegis?)

I don't think it was a linear increase, but like 2 for +1, 4 for +2, 8 for +3 or so, but I'm not so sure. Look it up.

lol, I drowned your commander together with the succubus that secuced him. Can happen when the capitol is underwater... My vassals are so loyal, they even drown themselves for me.
Btw: I empowered one of my commanders and no horror showed up. Perhaps just luck, perhaps it doesn't draw horrors.
Cor2

Thanks Ich and cupido! I have nothing better to do on my birthday than lurk on this forum, which makes me the coolest person in the world. hehe.
Those sucubi are nasty. good assasins.
It was the lich that the demon lord was trying to corrupt. the tartarian was a bodyguard for the lich. the demon lord charmed the tart and thats why it was killed by an undead horde. Then I made a mistake and removed the ring of regen from the lich after the move order so he stayed behind and was killed. Luckily he is immortal. Still the loss of 65 gems worth of items hurts.
The battle between my undead gods escaped from hell and your monsters of the neither void was something to watch. It would make a great novel. BTW that is how you pwn a bogus, ouch! Thats what he gets the traitor! And the insane raged tartarian was perfect! so funny.
