View Full Version : Minor annoyance with Cave Forts

I built a fort in a mountain in a MP game as MA Argatha. The province had both the mountain and forest icons. Unfortunately I can only build a forest castle there. As Argatha, I am trying to build more cave forts than other types to make use of the darkness effect.

Does anyone know how the fort type is decided in provinces with multiple terrain types? It would be nice if Argatha would build a cave fort in every mountain province regardless of the other terrain types in that province.

Thanks,
Chris

Are you sure it's a real mountain and not a 'border mountain'? (You can tell by hovering the mouse over the mountain icon).

I hover over it, and it says "Mountain good resources...blahblah"

The type of fort built in multi-terrain provinces seems to be determined by the terrain type numbers of the terrain, with lowest number terrain given priority. Forest is 4, mountain is 8, thus forest/mountain provinces will ALWAYS produce forest forts. So will Forest/anything, in fact.

Similarly, Mountain/anything-but-forest will always net you mountain forts etc. For reference of terrain type numbers (as related to sites and mapmaking), see the Dom3DB or the terrain_math.txt here (http://www.dom3minions.com/docs/)

Am I the only one who thinks you should be able to choose your fort in multitype provinces? Or - multitypes should be re-examined. Desert/Wasteland/Farmland and a number of other combinations are ... BS.

I agree that you should be able to choose your fort type in multitype provinces.

Desert?

At least with the random maps, I have never seen a wasteland/farmland combo. The only combos that I have seen on the random maps are waste/mountain, forest/mountain and farm/mountain (with border mountains turned on) which seem perfectly reasonable to me.
