Why, why are you so mean?
*weeps*
Well I hate R'lyeh anyways. So there!
For some reason, as Agartha (not necessarily as other nations), I have a tendency to irrationally desire war with R'lyeh, even if I have to pass up an easy target to do so.
Loosely speaking, when should I aim for getting a pretender in? I'll wrap up some of my other waiting turns, then experiment with LA, since I have tried them out yet. Here's hoping some MA experience carries over. Regardless, as long as I have fun...

Lazy_Perfectionist
July 2nd, 2007, 01:38 PM
A small mistake, both Zachariah and I wanted Agartha. We'll settle that between the two of us, but if I don't show up in the game its because I'm to lazy to learn a new nation, and don't have the time to design a pretender by this evening.
However it turns out, I'm fine with it. I've currently got SmokyBat and Jaguar to fulfill my Agartha cravings, and I do need to set aside some time to learn other factions, and come up with a plan for them. That is, if I wish to be able to join a wider variety of games, including the often overwhelming Random Nation type.

You're looking for 15 players - seems Marignon, Atlantis, Ct'si, Utgard and Arco are open? Taking a look at them, if I get in (and you're still under 13 players when I look to upload), great. No mods, right?

oh crap i'm a goof: i hadn't passworded my pretender god, so was overridden by someone else. I started over, this time with a password. Sorry everyone!
Lazy_Perfectionist
July 3rd, 2007, 02:22 AM
I think that before the game starts, I can still override you, even if you do have a password. In the future, I'd advise stating your choice in the first post. Either that, or you forgot a password again.
I was careful not to upload one of my own, but the option did appear without asking me for a password. I wasn't willing to do a test and overwrite it to be certain how it works.

I might, if you're still open tomorrow. But I need to rest tonight before I can be decisive enough to make a choice. Fortunately, no work tomorrow. Now though, tired = indecisive. When I'm truly hungry, for instance, it can take me a half-hour to choose what to eat. If I've taken off the edge, I can usually make up my mind in three minutes.

I had uploaded my god last night and had not announced it. I sometimes prefer some anonymity in my games or at least for the early part of the game. Sorry for the confusion coobe. It is generally a good idea to login to the server to see which nations remain before you make your god.
Lazy_Perfectionist
July 4th, 2007, 07:58 PM
Well, I've finally uploaded my pretender.
On the subject of anonymity, it would probably be a good idea some other time and thread to hash out some system for that. I can see positives and negatives for that, but the main issue is that it's hard for mp n00bs like me to pick up on the clues when anonymity isn't mentioned explicitly, and anonymous players naturally don't advertise etiquette for it.
Perhaps a poll could be used to keep track of joined members? Or declaration of anonymous at the beginning of the game? I'm just brainstorming, but since the problems been hashed out, I really don't care to clutter this thread further. It'd be interesting to see what a dedicated thread could come up with, or a game where players didn't declare their race, simply posting that they've joined after sending in a pretender?
Well, doesn't matter now, but I could see anonymity adding some fun, so I'd love to see some n00b friendly system for this or an anon/public/mixed tag for games.

omg, once again i was unable to play as my selected pretender! I just tried a test game w/ the same pretender, same settings, and it was fine, so I think someone must have bumped me.
I will start this game again, and I'm assuming that everyone's taking the same nation's that they originally selected. If not, just post to this thread. Please be respectful of other people's nation selections!
This time, before starting, I will make sure that everything is proper.

Thank you for making that list Ramiro. I think a lot of people aren't monitoring the forum as much as others, and its only because Im currently active in a lot of diplomacy in 2 multiplayer games that Ive been on a lot and seen that this server keeps getting reset. I've personally had to upload my pretender 3 seperate times. May I also suggest that Zachariah please set a start date and time as there still seems to be a huge amount of confusion with this game. And to RamsHead, I certainly mean no offense in saying this, but it doesnt seem feasible to me to be able to participate in a game without stating that you are in it, which has subsequently caused a good bit of confusion as Coobe followed the path that everyone else has taken, in every game I've ever seen, of claiming the nation publicly on the game thread. That being said, we are well above the minimum number of players Zachariah wanted, so I hope me can get going sometime in the next day or so.

No offense taken. True, by not stating I had taken C'tis earlier, some confusion was created. I shall not do that in the future. Nonetheless, when coobe was confused, I revealed that I had uploaded my god as C'tis hours before he mentioned he wanted them. Despite my claiming of C'tis before he did (though not revealed until later on the thread), he uploaded his god for C'tis when the server reset. There is no right or wrong on this issue. Most here feel that the claiming of a nation only counts if it is on the thread. I feel differently. I will leave the issue at that though and bid goodbye.

15/15. I don't believe theres a reason you're not included on the list - theres been two list- none official- of players. And I think the cause is a simple lack of organization. You weren't rejected, and neither of us who posted a list are the game hosts.
FungalReason - if you've uploaded your pretender, it doesn't look like its too late. We're at the magic number, and I see Utgard is already human controlled. But Zachariah's the one to ask. If however, you haven't uploaded Utgard, someone's already taken that slot.

Good grief... I already see R'lyeh's capital, and Jomon's troops are already adjacent to my capital. And to the north are barbarian hordes- troops I'd handle quite easily if only I had archers. Is there a way out of this situation that doesn't involve war with Jomon and peace with R'lyeh?
I'll hold out a turn in the hope that there is some better outcome, (I may even accept advice from my enemies), but I'm really wishing my pretender was awake right about now.

The nation of Jomon, after being attacked with no provocation or warning from the nation of Atlantis, an incredibly foolish decision considering the state of his armies, declares war upon Atlantis. This unwarranted attack is sufficient casus belli and will be answered with force as I deem sufficient.
Lazy_Perfectionist
July 13th, 2007, 02:47 PM
Fair enough. You have casus belli. I do dispute 'no provocation or warning', though I certainly didn't put effort into diplomacy.
Look up at post #535617 - 07/11/07 11:28 AM
I also dispute 'unwarranted', though I wouldn't dispute rash.
That province I attacked - the only one I planned to attack - is adjacent to my capital. As my scouts tell me, the same is not true for you. Given the proximity of Caelum on my east, you to my south, and R'lyeh to the west, I will allow no one to occupy a province adjacent to my capital. Even without this war, I doubt I'd be able to expand further than one province out in all directions.
I'm willing to pay for that province, if a truce is on the table, but I'm not willing to let it remain in hostile control. As I have received no messengers, I must assume the worst. Negotiations might fail, and leave me facing PD and an army. Simply unacceptable.
Lazy_Perfectionist
July 14th, 2007, 12:37 AM
Oh for fs sake... Its like I can only expand by war.
I attacked an indie. I retreated after ONE casulty, before melee, and it wasn't even the captain.
R'lyeh attacked from the west, too. At least I managed to repel the cultists. I'm okay with the close starting positions, but I'm pissed at all these indies, especially those barbarian hordes.
To whomever it may concern (Caelum) my capital is in 86. The seizure of any directly connected province will be viewed as a hostile act and will be met with immediate, though limited retaliation, and not a full fledged war. If, however, someone insists on a full fledged war, they will regret it.
Such retaliations will be limited to only a siezure of the adjacent province. A repeat offender will marked for visitations by my god. Bring it on.
Peace is also welcome, because my pretender can only kickass one nation at a time.

...and war is not what caelumian seek.
I'm here to offer a NAP that none of us may attack each other w/o 3monthes notify, to you, both Jomon and Atlantis. It's not even the end of the first year, indy commanders still rule the whole world and I see no reason of ignite a battle between any pretender this earlier. we know how hurt a early war is.

Okay, this is a really weird workaround, but try this.
1. Double click on your icon to connect, assuming you have the IP address and port loaded into the command line.
2. Click quickly, but not super fast, on the screen area.
For some reason, this allows me to get past the point where it stalls out and freezes at the "loading game" info screen.

Really, really, weird. I have no connection icon, I am using the in-game interface where one field prompts for the IP, confirms, then opens a second field asking for port number, and confirms. On my third try, after reading your advice, I clicked 'OK' once, not twice, clicked on the screen, and got through! WTF???

Seal Hunters parties raiding R'lyeh, who's neglected a lot of defense. I won't take him out with that, but it should prevent him from getting a huge advantage from his underwater position.
My pretender's moving against Jomon now. We'll see whether I moved to soon. I've practiced in mp games quite a few times, and learned quite a bit, but I'm always finding a new way to kill him off.
Utgard's down there too? You can PM me if you want to coordinate anything to the extent of a war pact, avoiding each others forces, or declaring war upon each other.

ROTFL!
I actually treat that as a compliment.
Sorry I didnt see this sooner. Especially if its already settled.
I dont think we ever did pinpoint the bug. The closest we got was that apparently you can slip in sometimes, and sometimes not. It seems to have something to do with the game being distracted by a bad connection (the freeze screen) and letting the next one thru. If you do the steps provided, then you can often fill both bills. Create a freeze, then slip thru quickly on a second try while its still distracted.
It seems to hit mid-sized games for some reason more than others. The 2-4 player blitzes dont seem to have it. The monster game doesnt seem to have it (knock on virtual wood). But around 10 players it showed up on my server.
The mid-sized games both had it but only for awhile then cleared up after about a week. I "fixed" it by leaving a connection to the game continually from my desktop machine. For some reason, that seemed to let everyone in OK.

"I strode into the decadent hall of the foul Marigons. False practitions of fire and blood magic. My Abyssian Plate boots echoed loudly in the great hall. I was escorted by 20 men at arms to a chamber filled with old men in robes. My hands held tightly onto the red rubie my master had given me. His words came into my mind. "keep this stone safe. Use it when your life is in peril. To use it you must crush it and cry out the name of our Lord."
One of the old men spoke. "Abyssian, why have you come here seeking an audience with us? Speak"
I spoke that which my master had commanded of me. My voice echoed in the small chamber. "Know this, I am Cremnian, herald to the great prophet Vapula. Our Lord and master, Asmodeus, considers the men of Marigon weak practitioners of Fire and Blood magic. Asmodeus declares that the men of Marigon will die. The women will be used as slaves and your childeren will be sacrificed to the Abyss. Your lands will burn, your false prophets and gods shall be play-things for the Horrors of the Abyss. PREPARE FOR THE END"
The chamber was still. The old men started to rise from their chair crying out in rage. From a dark alcove that I did not notice before there came a hiss "Kill him" The men at arms rushed forward, broad swords drawn for the kill. Some of the old men were chanting some words of power. A flash screamed in my chest and I realize a crossbow bolt had pierced my plate armor. Then I remembered the gem. I crushed it with my remaing strength and cried out "ASMODEUS"--- Darkness, then a blinding light of the void. Right before I passed out I saw the familiar form of my master bending over me...

Dramatic:
R'lyeh shows their treacherous nature yet again, they show the true nature behind their offer of peace when they send their spawn to mark my god for the horrors of the astral voids.
The only thing keeping me from retaliating against this filth is the lack of water breathing. These dire circumstances have forced me to skin one of their mindless Shamblers and forge a minor magical artifact.
Out of Character
I'm willing to take out loans in 200/400 gold chunks to assist in a temple push back out to sea, to give me much needed mr dominion bonuses. I'm willing to trade water forged items or gems for magic resistance boosters or reinvigoration items. I'm also willing to pay a lease fee for the rental of the same.
R'lyeh did make an offer of peace if I stopped raiding while they attacked Arcosephale. I didn't respond but did cease raiding while I ramped up and achieved construction two for a fighting chance. My pretenders' probably been horror marked eight times. In this game, I consider R'lyeh untrustworthy, especially since they already expressed a desire for the extinction of any races that can go beneath.

The old man, clad all in black, gazes steadily at the younger man before him, swathed in red and gold.
"So, it has come to this at the last?"
"Yes."
"And now?"
"I leave immediately to take to the field with the army."
"And the enemy?"
"They are foul, twisted mockeries of humanity. The taint within them will be their undoing. The power of the Divine will unmake them!"
"You have always been devout."
"As you taught me to be."
"Indeed I did. Did I never teach you to doubt your haste, or to question?"
"Never on matters of faith, or right and wrong."
"So you will destroy them?"
"What else is there to do?"
The silence hangs between them, and lengthens.
"And yet, I pity them," says the old man at last.
"I do not! They are evil incarnate, bathed in the flames of hell, who march upon our borders even now, bearing the blood of demons in their veins! I go to deliver them from their loathsome existence and render unto them Divine justice!"
"My blessing upon you, then."
Another silence, which ends as the younger man inclines his head, backs to the door and leaves. The black, iron-bound door is heavy, but makes no sound as it swings shut.
"And that is why I pity them."

Yea! I finally have a dominion foothold in the sea. If I keep it up, I'll weaken their dominion and freespawn. They fortunately won't have any easy time setting up dominion walls thanks to the lack of chokepoints.
I have some military strategies to try against him that I'd never dare risk against other nations, but perhaps will be just what the calamari calls for.
In Veturi, I got rather familiar with Atlantis, though I didn't face any astral nations, let alone Rlyeh. They were surprisingly effective against Ctis - though I'll probably have to think in the opposite direction against R'lyeh.
In Jaguar, I faced R'lyeh, (albeit MA), and became familiar with many of their troops and playstyle- though had an entirely different set of tools as Agartha.
So, I haven't been in this exact situation, but I'm not coming in completely cold, either. Pun not intended.

Ymir.... died in a retreat. Untouched, but other troops fled. Because I couldn't connect, I stalled and he had no retreat path...
Staling, connection issues have kilt me. At least I know my pretender designed worked, or would have, if I'd been around to play it.
Switching to AI, giving some loot (~15 pearls and water gems), 25 gold to Utgard- plus some minor artifacts. This is a favor for actually responding to my request for mr items. I wasn't paralyzed once in this last battle.
For everyone's information, the province of Elkland (101) comes with a construction bonus.
rt R'lyeh into a pulp, because I have only one province left - and its not my capital. I can't do it myself.
R'lyeh? You would have been an interesting opponent, if I'd been around to fight you. While I hate you now, it won't carry over into the next game. If I'd simply said something the first time I'd noticed I couldn't connect instead of waiting for others to chime in first, I wouldn't be in this mess. Lesson - complain earlier. Not any louder or more frequently, just earlier.
In the meantime, may your seas dry up, your dreams involve Hello Kitty, and your meteor turn out to be a weather balloon.
Jazzepi
August 28th, 2007, 12:29 AM
That's part of the hazard of using a SC with a ton of other units. Once you lose a certain percentage of your field, everyone routes. That's the reason I attacked the other two provinces at the same time. Though your pretender God was leaking fatigue fast, towards the end of the battle, before he routed, he was up to 90 fatigue or so. Very close to passing out. I doubt that he would have survived the fight even without the routing, but you never know. Morale 50 guys always make their awe check, and once he's asleep he's an easy target to nickle and dime to death through afflictions (especially blindness).
I'm sorry you couldn't connect, it sucks, but I've been trying to help people out on here as I'd much rather have a game with opponents who can fight back. I was pretty adamant with my posts that the server was still up, I even posted multiple times on how to get past the screw up. I really wish Zach would try resetting the server instead of just the process. I'm surprised this wasn't step #1.
>In the meantime, may your seas dry up, your dreams involve >Hello Kitty, and your meteor turn out to be a weather >balloon.
I don't think that'll happen anytime soon http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif Though our population keeps dying off. I thought you had an interesting pretender build, and I can offer some advice from my POV if you'd like. I probably wouldn't have gone W10, the different between that one point of defense is negligible compared to what those extra points would have been worth in scales, or other magic paths. I also would have built more of those sacred units. I thought they were quite good.

If I hadn't stalled who knows how often in a row, I would have removed the boots of trampling. Who knows, w/o flight AND trampling, I may have been able to take advantage of my 10 reinvig.
Yeah.. I don't blame you any for taking on the staller. Yeah, that tenth point of water wasn't really valuable. And I could have afforded to remove some earth, air points (randoms), in the pursuit of awakened. Though that tenth point does give me a slightly stronger bless for 64 points, I still am limited to capital only.
Despite your directions, I still was unable to connect until that last time. I even started multiple instances of the game.
I was surprised with my sacreds, as well. They were pretty effective w/o any bless. Now to use them blessedly well...
Do you think I would have been better off dropping to 8 water? It would free up another 56 points, and quickness isn't that necessary when I have spellcasters capable of casting it (but better), and capital only sacreds.
Air didn't offer as much to my pretender as I'd hoped. Mist form WAS good, mirror image was lacking, and anti-arrow was nice, but eventually replacable.
I think I would need to gear my pretender to underwater expansion. I might experiment with going with the Son of the Sea, and sea how that lack of cold-theme affects my combat fatigue, scale boni, etc.

I've lost interest as well. Missed three turns thinking the server's down. Is there anyone interested in sub a big, well run nation, with 3 capitols?
If not, I guess I'll set to AI this turn.

Hmm. Still having trouble connecting.
Is it safe to assume that this game is ending?

It's ended...for me. After a series of connection failure I can't even get myself AIed. Frustrating.

Bluebird has returned and will take over Arco, if the game continues.

LOL. OK so me and marigon fight it out. I make this huge communion of warlocks and have one of the leaders cast hellpower for hah hah.Another one casts power of the spheres. Then the plan was to spam horror marks everywhere while summoning horrors. Hah, I didnt realize hell power horror marked the guy casting it. So, there are like 8 horrors attacking everywhere. Mostly on my warlocks who have all been horror marked through the communion. my army of flaming slingers and arrows are shooting everywhere. its total mayham. I'm not quite sure how I only had 3 warlocks die. But now they are all horror marked! heh. thats what i get for trying stuff that i havent tested.

This game is dead. Please wait until the next turn, at least, before taking down the game service, I'm trying out some golem SCs and I want to see how they do.

I have gone AI. I am tired of trying to connect 8 times before finally connecting.
