I just recently downloaded the Dominions 3 demo for linux. I ran the installer, and everything turned out find, but when I ran "dom3demo" all that happened was that a window opened up that said "Please wait", and then it immediatley closes. The output from the terminal said "Error: Rage 128 timed out... exiting". What does this mean, and how can I fix it so I can play the demo?
thanks.

Do you have DRM/DRI enabled and working? Type "glxinfo | grep render" in a shell window. If it says "direct rendering: No" then you haven't.

It says yes.
I tried running it again and it said
"unix_connect: can't connect to server (unix:/tmp/ksocket-alphalon/alphalon-desktop.site-0e2f-468b8286)"
Any idea what that means?

Might be that the game is trying to connect to a company server? Presumably as some sort of security measure I would guess. But then... you wouldnt think that would be neccessary in a demo? Dunno.

I fixed the socket problem, but my stupid graphics card hates this game.

You can probably set a lot of the video preferences to low, or run without background, but that is a bit unappealing http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Hmm... I doubt it your problem, but its a quick thing to try.
Try the --noglext switch. When my graphics hated it, that was the blanket tweak that fixed everything.

Have you made sure you've installed all the latest drivers for your video card on linux?
For me (also using linux) it was an unplayable clunky mess until I installed drivers from nVidia, since when it's been smooth as anything.
The game is written on linux by the way, so the platform's well supported.
