Perhaps one of the goofier single-player SCs I've used -- this one in an overly lackadaisical Machaka game stomping some hapless Pythians. Sestos has 1,042 confirmed kills so far. In a wacky coincidence, the heroic quickness came -after- all the trample-happy gear was assigned. :p

Anyway very nice, although i dare say that my favourite seraph would kill him rather quickly(along with every single unit visible on-screen;)).

Well, due to what coobe said, I'll post this SC/Thug up. He's obviously not the same caliber as Sestos there, but when I got him as a Hero, I knew he'd make a perfect prophet. Fits in perfectly with LA Ulm's Interior Strength/Defensive theme, being stronger in his own dominion and all. I empowered him with Air-1('cause I had the gems sitting around), and it means he can cast mistform at the start of battle. It was in SP, and he doesn't have the best equipment, only up to Construction-6 items.
Cool Name though.

Sestos doesn't have the Aegis, because another Tartarian does. :p But the chains are a waste on that build; none of the remaining AIs fields size 6 combatants very much at all.

Interesting question is how long you can keep it. Scabiel, at least, will accept your orders.

He buffs with phoenix pyre, strength of gaia, summon earthpower, soul vortex and then either whatever buff is deemed most useful for the battle(iron will, personal luck, breath of winter, misform, quickness ect) or simply some sort of devastatingly powerful spell such as soul drain, shimmering fields or master enslave.
His fear is +10, his awe is +6, his resistances are S100%, F100%, C200% and P100%. His chill is 16, his fireshield is 16ap damage and his reinvigoration is 18(22 after summon earthpower).
Sure he is still vunerable to instant death, sure petrify could still kill him and sure I still loathe the spells infernal prison and claws of cocytus(oh look, my B1 mage can gather enough resources to destroy 8 SCs per game turn http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif) but i love this guy. Also, 22 reinvigoration, soul vortex and soul drain work very well with phoenix pyre.

Probably cheaper to spam life-draining banners, actually, and the banners don't need to beat either defense or MR.
Against that sort of viciousness, well, that's when you want Blood Vengeance. :p
MaxWilson
July 27th, 2007, 04:32 AM
Hmmm. The Seraph appears to have spent about 2000 pearls on Wishes, which would buy 50 banners or so (assuming 50% losses from alchemizing but also dwarven hammers). Assuming the banners are given to mages (MR ~15) and not just normal commanders, I doubt even Blood Vengeance could save you. (It'll block maybe 35% of the 700 points of damage per round.)
However. Doesn't Phoenix Pyre bring you back at full hit points? With a reinvigoration of 22 and 1300 hit points, I'm not at all sure the Seraph wouldn't survive. Maybe if all the mages had a D9 bless...
Edit: No, wait, I know. Just hit him with a few Magma Eruptions first. The smoke clouds it leaves behind always increase fatigue significantly. It's possible that heat resistance prevents that, though; must test. Failing that, use Sleep or its equivalent. Anything that increases fatigue, in order to combat Phoenix Pyre.
I'm quite impressed that it's so hard to come up with (non-blood) ways to kill this guy off.

MaxWilson
July 27th, 2007, 11:08 PM
Why are pics necessary, vs. just the stats? Some things show up better in stats than in pics anyway, such as the exact level of fear or awe or regen.
Me, I'm currently a fan of the good old cheap-o Wraith Lord kit: Shadow Brand, Shield of Gleaming Gold, Boots of Flying, Pendant of Luck. 22 gems (7D 6E 3F 3A 3S) for equipment, great mobility for leftover expansion, raids and putting down barbarian infestations (on Misfortune-3 I get those regularly), can cast Soul Vortex. Fear +3, Awe +0, Attack 20 (effectively), Defense 21, 33 hit points (although more often 48+ because of Soul Vortex the previous turn), MR 17, heals afflictions, Morale 30, ethereal, lucky, flying, (poorly) amphibious. Immortal in friendly dominion but that's not really relevant. Can resist any amount of chaff (except from LA Ermor, with this gear) and kill 70-100 per turn before they rout. To kill larger armies, either play tactical positioning games to cut off retreat or combine Wraith Lord with a necromancer in the back casting Rigor Mortis and/or Plague.

I've been working on a single pretender in SP and MP, on and off. I succeed for a while, then find a whole new way to kill myself off. The basic design is stuck, for now but I'm experimenting with equipment and whatnot. I don't want to tip my hand quite yet with this pretender, and give away everything, since I haven't seen combat yet in my very, very cramped mp game. Though some NAPS allow me to take my pretender off my capital for once.
This time I waited for some equipment, and got about 300 kills by the end of year three. If anything, fear's more of an impediment, cutting down on my casualty rate. Though I do find a way to kill myself of, especially against a weird Jotunheim/Not-Ermor combo that I suppose was mercs with flaming blades.
I think I've struck on some sort of equipment goal, though a bit late. So.. what's the earliest you'd call a supercombatant, and what qualifies as super by year three. No Tartarians, please. I'm curious about what measuring stick I should aim for before my MP game gets to the points my sp games reached.
sum1lost
July 28th, 2007, 03:29 AM
I have one in year three in one game. Archangel with fear+awe combo, ethereal, lucky coin, frostbrand, birch boots, regeneration amulet, reinvigoration amulet.
Pretty much phoenixpower + fireshields himself, then dives into melee and casts close-range evocations or attacks. It came more than halfway through the year, though.

Anyways, here's my supe making his debut in late summer, year two. He's not fully developed, thanks to placing close to hostile Jomon, hostile R'lyeh, crowded by neutral Caelum and Arcosephale, and large barbarian hordes I had trouble expanding and getting all my research out. I'm still waiting on some research, but Jomon still couldn't touch this. I'm sure he can manage something, though, given time- though Utgard surely is making that difficult for him.
http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/threads/uploads/539567-Ymir_03.jpg
Notes: Dominion -1, Cold is only 1, so I don't get full bennies from the frosty winter wonderland I'm working on. Didn't do my full spellscript, just earthpower, air shield, iron skin. At the end of an admittedly smaller than expected battle, hadn't taken one hit.
Awe +2, Chill 25, Reinvig 4. I do have further plans, but I was forced to deploy early. Im really pissed that there's only one lake in Outsider, and R'lyeh's right there. It makes sense for him to declare war, but paralysis is a problem. Hence I'm trying to end my war with Jomon ASAP.

Can switch the Bracer out of course, he was actually switching between it and some other items I had made. This was in a Dom9 province with GoH and he has the +hit points hall of fame ability. Being able to only have 2 misc items hurts, especially seeing as one of them has to be the amulet of the fish for land work.

Okay, I'll post a few screenies from my latest Ulm Reborn game for your consideration. NOTE: I play SP, so I'm not going to make any claims about how well these guys would perform in MP....
First, we have Tiamat, the commander of Team Tarrasque:
http://img480.imageshack.us/img480/1816/teamtarrasquecommanderszl5.jpg
Only having two Misc slots puts a real limit on how thoroughly I can "pimp out" my big lizard, but that's okay. Tarrasques don't really need much equipment to be hardcore killing machines. The Astral empowerment is so that she can Gateway her buddies in Team Tarrasque all over the world to do my evil bidding.
Second, the noble Van Duk:
http://img471.imageshack.us/img471/678/vanduksmallwj8.jpg
He's not a full-fledged SC, but he does make a good Thug. Keen observers will note that Van Duk is carrying a Hell Sword which was forged by tainted Blood magic. How does he rationalize such evil with the strict moral code of Ulm Reborn? Simple ... his God told him that it was okay. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
Third, Liwet the Sternheld:
http://img471.imageshack.us/img471/1/liwetthesternheldsmallci3.jpg
Again, not a true SC, but a great Thug. He self-buffs with Personal Luck, Astral Shield, & Mistform. Then Liwet soars over the fray to strike the enemy's vulnerable rear. What's his heroic ability? Why, Awesome Presence, of course....
Finally, the only "true" SC of this post, Antrax the King of Banefires:
http://img170.imageshack.us/img170/3951/kingofbanefiressmallqx5.jpg
His MR is a bit low, but my AI opponents haven't figured out how to take advantage of that weakness. If I were playing Antrax against a human, I'd give him some +MR gear for sure. Probably a Starshine Cap and a Lead Shield....

Here's the latest evolution of Ymir, sitting pretty in my capital. R'lyeh's been busy horrormarking me, but I fought off the first basic horror rather easily.
Do you think I have enough defense on my pretender to beat a horror with a measly 18 attack skill?

Soul Leech: AN AoE life drain, MR negates, 0 damage (+str)
Life Drain: AN life drain, 0 dmg
Consume Soul: Death, MR negates
Astral Claw: AN, 0 dmg, increases Horror Mark
Curse Luck: special AoE effect of Curse Luck, length 4 so allows for repel. Curse Luck effect:
http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/threads/uploads/463812-temp.jpg
Blood Vengeance means that every time the creature is subject to damage, the one dealing the damage must make a magic resistance check or suffer it himself. Soul Slay -> suicide, melee hits -> own damage, longbowmen killing themselves, etc. The better the attacker's magic resistance, the less effective this is.
Umor, the Eater of Gods, seems to be more likely to attack horror-marked pretenders. He has three forms. His first, physically the most powerful, has the following stats:
55 HP
15 Prot
19 MR
20 Strength
22 Attack
12 Defence
Blood Vengance +0
1xCurse Luck
1xLifedrain
4xAstral Claw
and, of course, etherealness/magic being/fear etc
His second and third form have less hp and attack, but more defense, and the special abilities increase. He'll be rather difficult to finish off...

I'm interested in seeing how Cursed Luck works in practice.
I'm not exactly afraid though. The combination of 34 defense (12 more or 2% chance) and mirror image may cause Umor a little trouble.
So which of these Horror attacks go up against MR, and which against Defense, and which both?
Endoperez
August 11th, 2007, 08:40 PM
Remember that each attack lowers the defense by 2 until the end of that round. With 5 to 6 attacks, the last ones will have much greater chance of getting through...
The above is true of all attacks, and explains why swarming brings down high-defence units.
Fatigue is another killer.
Zath
August 12th, 2007, 02:05 AM
I've been wondering about this for some time, but is the defense penalty for being swarmed affected by etherealness and luck? In other words, if a unit avoids an attack due to etherealness or luck, will its defense still be reduced by 2 for the next attack?
Aethyr
August 12th, 2007, 02:11 AM
This is a great question, I would like to know the answer as well.
Lazy_Perfectionist
August 12th, 2007, 07:26 AM
Good point about the defense penalty. Well, I can increase my defense further, but can't rely on getting off more than one spell before the Horror's at my feet.
Ironskin's useless with the Armor Penetration/Piercing. Mistform is useless. Earthpower - I'm not likely to have a long battle. That leaves Mirror Image, which I'm unfortunately not quite strong enough in to depend on.
Still, I can count on my defense preventing at least half of the first wave of attacks, barring unusually bad luck. And even with the last attack (though unluck is risky), I'll have at least a 54% chance of not being hit.
Endoperez
August 12th, 2007, 01:08 PM
Chainmail of Displacement (automatic Mirror Image AND +3 def) and Boots of Quickness (Quickenss grants +3 att, 3 def) will increase the defence even further.
IIRC, Swords of Quickness increase defence just as well as Ice Swords, and also grant twice as many attacks.
If you want protective gear, Starshine Skullcap (S2, boosts Astral magic and magic resistance) is much better than Horror Helmet against Doom Horrors.
Aethyr

Hmmm...I did not know that Chainmail of Displacement also granted Mirror Image--thanks!
Lazy_Perfectionist
August 12th, 2007, 02:04 PM
I'm currently limited to construction two, and trade.
As I'm waging war against R'lyeh, I'm probably going to prioritize MR and chaff slaughtering abilities.
There are two problems with Chainmail of Displacement and Boots of Quickness, though they'll probably come into play once I start worrying about heavier horrors. If R'lyeh has there way, that won't be long. The Horror Mark spell can't be resisted, right?
First, Chainmail of Displacement- encumbrance of 2 - pretty good for armor, but I'm driving for negative fatigue. My normal spell prep leaves me halfway worn out, and that fatigue makes me vulnerable. I've often had my commander die by falling asleep in the middle of battle. Also has the misfortune of costing ten air gems. I control very little territory in this game, and can't afford it.
Boots of Quickness will help again, once I face heavier horrors. But... they'll also fatigue me twice as fast, too. I'll consider it. But simply using two swords doesn't increase fatigue nearly as much.

August 12th, 2007, 02:14 PM

LP--
Your magic resistance is more than decent and you've got two the swords. If fatigue is the problem it seems to me you'd be much better going with Boots of the Messenger and Amulet of Resilience. These two items along with starting your script with "Summon Earth Power" shoud make you pretty much fatigue free.
