When a spell like ritual of rebirth is cast, or twice born and then the castor dies, does the target get all of its orignal abilites? Lets say its a dragon. Can the dragon still shape change and fly?

Nope. They keep magic, and I think experience, but no special abilities.

Thats what I thought. Just making sure. Thanks llamabeast.

They also keep the hall of fame stuff.

Are you able to cast ritual of rebirth on a pretender?

I don't think so. You're really supposed to use 'Call God' for that.
Ritual -- excludes undead except Mummies, excludes pretenders IIRC, turns unit into Mummy (exact choice depends on original unit size, which has funny effects for mounted units -- ex. dead heroic Black Hunter == Giant Mummy). Intrinsic special abilities are tied to the base unit and are therefore lost.

No. The Ritual of Rebirth brings the unit back as a mummy, so it becomes a different monster type.

Not sure about pretenders, but there is a divine mummy version for size 5-6 heroes. It might work.

I dislike the fact that everyone gets raised as a disease ridden mummy. I wish
there were some less disgraceful ways of preserving a hero. For example, an earth
spell that creates a mechanical body, or even a high level death/nature spell that
bring the unit with back its former body and abilities and the undead flag.

All unliving guys I have ever seen from the previous millenia (or perhaps the one before that) were quite ugly http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
We had some ideas on a resurrection spell of similar qualities, but that was back in dom-ppp.

Does twice born work on pretenders?

Yes, if they're not undead.
Not for underwater races, 'tho. Well, at least it's not recommended...

Twiceborn is a nice way of turning a Crone into something that can survive battles. Since her one ability (extra misc slot) is a little lame, its almost a good deal.

Actually, hm, doubt Twiceborn works on lifeless/inanimate, either. Otherwise, I probably would have gotten around to born-again Oracles or the like.
/experimented with Void Lurker-turned-Wight Mage in D2, but that won't work for R'lyeh in D3 -- instadrown regardless of water magic
