I'd be interested in playing on just about any map but Aran.

I'd be interested in taking suggestions. Specific suggestions.

Jazzepi

Use the random map generator a couple of times till you find one that's nice. Bring it up in the map editor to clean up the links between territories.

I'd be happy to mess around making a map that way. Just tell me how many provinces per person you want. Also, what your maximum amount of water nations is.

Jazzepi

Lazy_Perfectionist

As currently implemented, I loathe random maps. But since I won't be playing in the game myself, I'd go with a random map if general consensus was in its favor.

I appreciate the offer of you messing around with the map, and would happily take you up on the offer. While I haven't found the time, I'm interested in altering random maps, myself.

Just convince the other members to take up a random map, and then the two of us will hammer out the remaining details.

Cor2

Any map is fine with me, but i would prefer a non-random wrap-around map, like Cradle or whatever.

Reverend Zombie

Caelum here, please.

dmentd

How about Cradle? I know it is often used, but it is a good map.

Lazy_Perfectionist
August 9th, 2007, 01:12 AM
Hmm... Cradle sounds a little large to me, for eight players, but I haven't been in too many games, so I'm not really basing that on anything in particular.

If no-one objects to 25-28 provinces per player, I'll go ahead with Cradle, though I don't know about it being wraparound. It'll be especially large if a player doesn't show up for the start.

That little warning aside, I have no problem letting Cradle be the map. I will make other suggestions just because I can.

The Desert Eye (Wraparound) was fun in Veturi.
A Poke in the Eye V3 (user created) is based on The Desert Eye with some insane independents. Probably not a wise idea.
A Pangaean Earth is (user created) is the right size, but the lack of chokepoints probably doesn't make for a good first map.
Parganos is a bit unbalanced, thanks to fairly uniform swathes of territory, but a map I like quite a bit, perhaps for that very same reason.

Anyways, the new default map, barring any objections, is Cradle. I'm curious, Jazzepi. What's your objection to Aran? Something particular to you, or something I should keep in mind while organizing future games?

EarthRaver
August 9th, 2007, 02:32 AM
erm... lets try to keep this game small and fast.

Cor2
August 9th, 2007, 04:21 AM
I like desert eye. i just played Pangaean Parth and dont really like it as MP. Its not wraparound, the water nations have an advantage and the connections between provinces don't make alot of sence to me. Its not a bad map, don't get me wrong, i just think its SP material.

Jazzepi
August 9th, 2007, 04:23 AM
Uh, this game is listed as closed does that include a spot for myself? c.c

I dislike Aran mostly because a lot of the starting positions are terrible and there are not enough water provinces to support more than one water nation. If you put two in there, they're immediately at war.

There's a starting position on the western peninsula that only has two bordering territories.

Jazzepi

llamabeast

I would be disinclined to go with Cradle, I'd say it was a bit big for 8 players.

One objection I've heard to Aran is that it's a bit wasteland-y. I've not really looked at it myself though.

Another alternative is my modified version of Parganos (where I have tried to even the terrain up and make it much less unbalanced). I can modify it a bit more as per suggestions you made before LP.

I'm still intrigued why you loathe random maps LP? I agree they're not as interesting chokepoint-wise, but they're not that bad. And it's easy to add real mountain provinces if you want.

Karan was a Dom 2 map that I thought had been converted & fixed for Dom 3 to ensure fair starts, etc., but I can't find anything that supports my recollection--I might be confused with the work Edi did for Cradle.

At any rate, you can find the Dom 2 version on Illwinter's map page (http://www.illwinter.com/dom2/maps.html) and I'll continue hunting the forums to see if anyone fixed it for Dom 3.

I'll try to make a decision on the map by Friday, or if possible, this evening, so we can get this going this weekend.

The game is not yet set up, we need to decide on a map, but when thats together...

Instructions for uploading pretenders:
[...]
Here's how [...]:
[-LP says don't forgot to turn off any mods your are using.]
- Go to Game Tools -> Create a pretender god in Dominions
- Go to the savedgames/newlords folder in the dominions directory, and find your pretender file (e.g. mid_pythium_0.2h)
- E-mail the file to: pretenders[ at ]llamaserver[ dot ]net
- Crucially, you must have the game name, ['Bragi'], in the subject line of your e-mail

Then, create an empty folder in savedgames by the name of Bragi. When you receive your first turn file, you will download it into this folder. E.G. "mid_agartha.trn".

When you finish your turn, you'll send your order file (in the same folder) to turns(at)llamatserver(dot)net. For instance, "mid_agartha.2h". You should receive confirmation within five minutes.

You can also check the status of the game at www.llamaserver.net (http://www.llamaserver.net) at any time, to see whether its created, taking pretenders, started, or waiting on a particular player, etc. etc. etc.

I dont know either, Lazy perfectionist is the one to contact. But i count 8 people on the list IF LP is playing, If not then just 7. I woul dbe fine with upping it to nine players (or more), esp on a big map.

Lazy_Perfectionist
August 9th, 2007, 10:56 PM
You are included, Jazzepi.
I will not play in the Valhalla series of games unless a sub is needed or have some particular reason.

However, I wasn't going to add you officially to the list until I'd figured out whether there's an acceptable map. If consensus stuck us with Aran, then you would be out of this one game.

Actually... I just forgot. I added you to the count, but forgot to sneak your name in.

Lazy_Perfectionist
August 9th, 2007, 11:05 PM
How about Parganos? Do you still have your tweaked version of that map, llamabeast? Just include a few more mountain provinces and I see no points against it.

If you do have it, I'd like to go with that. I see no reason for anyone to object to that.

On a related note, I am really curious about Karan- but don't have the energy to be curious, just to keep on top of my given tasks. Some other time, perhaps, after a less awkward week.

Earth Raver had to drop out, unfortunately, but I've had good 7 player games on maps of this size.

We can go ahead without a replacement, but if someone wants to jump, and can design a pretender by Sunday/Monday, we've got a slot open.

Llamabeast, do you know if EarthRaver submitted a pretender, and if so, for what faction?

Yah, we've got a spot open. I believe Machaka is unclaimed.

Earth Raver was asking for eriu, and hasn't submitted a pretender yet, so there's no hassle in fitting you in.

It looks like everybody's selected a faction, so we're getting close.

Sorry, I had to tech support my own computer yesterday. I've been working with them for a long time, and in the past year I installed a RAID 1 array. Well recently I got some weird symptoms on my computer where it wouldn't boot. Turns out one of the drives in the RAID array died but the array still thought it was healthy.

Weird.

I'm back online though. Just had to pull one of the drives out of the array.

Someone said they were fixing this map right? I just booted up a practice game to get one last look at the standard production units and my starting province is SURROUNDED BY WATER! It's on that tiny little island in the lower left hand corner of the map.

A practice game? You mean one in the original game?
There's Edi's fixed version, which adds some nostarts.
http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/threads/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=501807
Then there's llama's version, which I assume is based off of Edi's, but makes swathes of terrain less homogeneous. I must admit, I enjoyed Edi's version of Paraganos quie a lot, but am interested in hearing what people think of Lllama's version.

Jazzepi

Whenever I'm making pretenders I always look at what units the race can recruit at home and in a citadel then I try to build a pretender. My goal is to completely oblierate the AI. Then I know I'm doing it right.

Lazy_Perfectionist
August 12th, 2007, 02:18 PM

I think it would be useful if you put a list of players and nations in the first post LP.

Lazy_Perfectionist
August 12th, 2007, 06:23 PM
I've got both of those... but not everyone told me who they picked, so they're in two separate lists.

llamabeast
August 12th, 2007, 06:25 PM
Oh okay, fair enough. Maybe for future games demand they tell you. As both a player and an organiser I find such lists useful (e.g. for PMing diplomacy, or to find out why a nation's been staling).

Anyway, starting... I modified parganos again. I'm interested to hear what people think of it.

First turns due by 21:25 GMT Tuesday.
In my area, thats 7:25 PM.

You'll have 48 hours to get your first turn in. After that, every turn will be on 30 hour quickhost. I'll be checking in on the thread occasionally - frequently at first, but don't be afraid to cast "Summon LP, the Lord of Sloth and Order" or send a PM if I'm needed.

I'll be watching the game start, in case there are any issues. If you need the game hosting froze for a while, or such, let me know.

Lazy_Perfectionist
August 12th, 2007, 09:47 PM

Everybody (or near enough) did mention their race. Updating first post.

Lazy_Perfectionist
August 16th, 2007, 11:04 AM
Game freeze requested. RZ may be able to get in one, two more turns. Will kick in tomorrow.

Llamabeast, if you're still around, is there a way to remove the timer, but leave quickhost on, or do I just settle for delaying it?

llamabeast
August 16th, 2007, 11:18 AM
When designing the server I decided to make it impossible to turn the timer off on games so that, if I'm not watching it in the future, games don't sit on it forever. No I'm not so sure that's really useful though (and I think I will notice if a game is dead for a long time anyway) - still, for the moment you can't turn the timer off. But you can change the hosting interval to a fortnight or something, which will come to the same thing (I had originally intended to limit the hosting interval to 1 week you see).

Wow, I just got stomped. I find the hardest armies for me to master are those with more traditional military units like Pythium.

I was really frustrated to find that for some reason the mages that I prepped to defend my capital by casting the spell that makes a single unit ethereal did not go with the defending forces. Instead they just stayed inside of the castle. They might have won me that fight on their own. Without any way to produce hydras, I'm setting myself to AI.

I suggest you all dogpile Pangea. He's just taken over quite a few territories from me, but over extended himself to do it.

Please take me off the e-mail list for turns.

Lazy_Perfectionist
September 15th, 2007, 11:34 AM
Wait a bit... coffee hasn't seeped into my brain. If need be, I will postpone hosting.

Uhmm... I'll look into things a bit. When did you try, and did you receive any error message or email? Try again in two hours, and let me know.

Edit: I did the postpone, but the status page isn't updating to match. I'll keep an eye on things and post when something changes.

Edit: The first postpone didn't go through (too impatient), but a bit later, the second eight hour postpone went through. Try sending in the turn once more. 2h file, Bragi, turns(at)llamaserver(dot)net. Let me know the results of that. I'll postpone again as long as this problem is unresolved.

llamabeast
September 15th, 2007, 12:04 PM
Just had a quick look at this. It seems there are two problems:

1) It thinks your 2h file is corrupted (never seen that before).
2) It's not managing to pick up your e-mail address for some reason (this is something I need to look into), so the error messages it's trying to send to you aren't getting to you.

I'd suggest first going back into Dominions, taking the turn ('Continue where I left' so you don't actually have to do it again), then hitting 'End turn' again, and trying to send the file again. Alternatively try using a different e-mail account and see if that helps.

dmentd
September 15th, 2007, 12:22 PM
I continued then ended as suggested. I also sent the e-mail from another account. I will give the server a few minutes and then check to see if it worked.

If I have to do so, I can try to redo the turn from another computer. That will be my next try.

dmentd
September 15th, 2007, 12:37 PM
It did not work. I also did not get an e-mail. I will try the other computer.

Lazy_Perfectionist

You could also try attaching the 2h file, and sending it to [scrubbed out to avoid spam bots]

I'll see if I can read it and send it in for you. I'd seen something similar to this once, and it may help. In that case, it was a once off.

I'll also look through my posts and see just what I did and what happened and blah de blah de blah.

Greetings giant people to the east! Hope we can be friends. Seems your doing quite well for your selfs.

Hello Man. Why did you attack us? Did you think us weak? Have we dispelled that notion yet?

Hello Caelum. how have you been? have not heard from you in a while. Would you like a gift? Interested in trading gems?

What the hell is happening with Ryleh? Seems to be just setting there. thats cool. I mean that is what I like players to do.

Hello. We hope you are faring well.

Things are peaceful in Caelum. The mammoths grow strong, the seraphs fly high, and the people grow strong in body and mind under the watchful eye of Sophia, supreme deity of this world and the next.

We welcome private discussion regarding trade.

We had a problem at the plant and I just finished a nearly 20 hour shift. Would you please delay this game for a day. Otherwise I might stale.

Oh, and Caelum, I somehow missed your message. New job is getting to me some, and I am tired, so I will search for it tomorrow,

Heh, from R'lyeh - Still wrapping my head around the nation, with a somewhat late start.

I will be out of town over the weekend for a conference without computer access, I will leave Friday morning, early and return Sunday afternoon, so will likely stale one turn unless someone knows someone who wants to take over for a single turn.

Besides you can probably count on people not to take advantage if you announced your absence. Just consider it income time.

I don't know if my comments are aimed at anyone. I'm fair game- all my missed turns have been due to stupidity. Like five simultaneous games stupidity.

Now if I'd been on vacation or something? That's a hypothetical I won't bother with right now. Especially the vacation- I wish that was possible, not hypothetical.

So, peeps, since I haven't been in on this game, do you have any feedback to offer? Things you wished I setup differently? Graphs on? Graphs off? Winged monkeys doing the disco? Hallucinogens or random rambling?

dmentd

Actually, my question was aimed at Cor2, which is why I changed the title. We had a fight, and I wanted to gloat while possible because eventually the shoe will beon the other foot and I will have to receive.

I think the game has been admin'ed well. When I had a technical problem, you responded. Other than the Ry'leh startup issue, it went well.

I admit I prefer to up the magic sites by 1 or 2 ticks to find more stuff. Everyone seems to leave it at default. Otherwise, I like it.

Does anyone know directions to Pangea's house? Cor2 insists that his capital is in between the couch cushions and I just cannot seem to find it.

You know, it would be far more courteous to put your road signs in common instead of the Pangean script...

dmentd - you sent in the 2h file for last turn (46) rather than the current one (47). The server should have sent you an e-mail to that effect - did it not?

Keep checking on Mongoose to see if it runs or not...

I REALLY HOPE IT DOESN'T CUZ IT DIDN'T GET MY TURRRNNNN ARRGH

EDIT: So far so good, it passed the timer and still isn't refreshing... I'm hoping that it either

a) doesn't refresh at all until Llama checks his stuff,

b) when it starts refreshing, it realizes that the turns were sent BEFORE the system went haywire.

Since choice c would make me rather aggravated.
