Does anyone know the exact mechanics for standards?

You mean the flags in the game? There is a mod you can look at which replaced all of the standards for all of the nations. Its just a text file. Take a look at it. Very easy to do.

Subnote: if you are planning to redo the standards I have a request. As you are redoing the nations into something new and slick... Please, also, redo the indepts to something lesser. Like maybe half the size they are now?

I think it's in the manual. I believe Standard (n) gives units in n squares surrounding the bearer a +1 morale bonus at the start of each round. This is cumulative, although a unit can never get greater that +5 to its base morale. I think somehow the morale bonus slowly wears off as well if the units move away from the standard.

Anyway, the gist is that if you have a fair few standards mixed in with a unit, soon enough everyone will have +5 morale - it's a big effect!

Does that show up in the displayed Morale?

Some things do and I think some don't.

I mean the standards that units carry around. I'm playing MA C'Tis in a game against Emor, and was using frighten to bring their units' morale into the negative teens (-15) and in the next turn or two they'd be right back to a positive number.

thejeff - yep, I think it does.

Jazzepi - units' morale recovers reasonably quickly from morale-reducing spells.

Wow, I didn't know standards were that good. Ermor usually doesn't have morale problems, but I'm definitely giving them a shot in my current game.

Much like AI nations, you've mentioned this several times, thinking people are doing it or suggesting they do it. This leads me to believe it's something you want done. Given that you just said yourself it's very easy to do, my question is this: Why don't you do it?

Gandalf Parker
August 30th, 2007, 05:38 PM
I have done it. For myself.
But Id like to see it done for general use by the community (a territory I tend to avoid both here and in other things I do). So I like to mention it in connection with anyone who might be interested in doing a full blown flags mod.

Sombre

So what you're saying is you've done it, but you won't provide it to the community and you want someone else to do what you've already done, so you keep mentioning it even though no-one other than you (that I've seen) has expressed any interest in it.

Is that roughly correct?

Does anyone know the mechanics for this? I didn't notice such a quick recovery when I was using the spells in a situation that didn't involve standards. I was thinking that perhaps the standards, when they add +1, bring the unit's morale back up to it's original plaute which would pull it out of the -16 morale arbitrarily fast. I don't know the mechanics for this, but I definitely saw units increasing from -15 or so morale to around 10-15 in a turn or two, and I thought that was far too fast.

Thanks for the credit.
Really though, Im am basically lazy. And I hate to "spearhead" a project (lead it, upload it, be the maintainer, sole credit and responsibility, etc)

In actuality, Im doing here what I always have done. Im used to brainstorming the project, hacking on any piece of it that seems "impossible" at the moment. Then when the kinks are worked out Ive turned it over to someone else (or a group) to flesh it out, pretty it up, deliver it, maintain it. High school, college, military, civilian jobs. All like that. Now Im over 50 and retired. Dont expect me to suddenly become a soloist

And isn't any nation that is not for play against the regular nations in the game become by deinition a good for AI mod? It seems like we have many of those.

No offense, but can this thread be cleaned up by a mod or something? This argument is way off topic, I wasn't even asking about national standards to begin with =\

I vote we re-name the title to and content of this post to "National Standards"

No. The thread was never about national standards.

Man what is it with you and national standards Jazzepi? You're always making threads about them.

then change the title to 'morale' and/or 'standart bearers'

Hey Jazzepi -

What do you think of the current national standards? Which ones look the best? I haven't really thought much about the national standards until this thread...

That's a good point Velusion. I'm glad someone's finally made a thread about national standards. For all this time I've had nowhere to channel my feelings on them.

Personally I really like the LA Pangaea standard. It's great.

Do national standards give better morale than regular ones? This thread is really confusing. (Insert wry emoticon here.)

HI I AM NU 2 TEH GAME AND I WAS WONDERING IF IT IS THE NATIONAL STANDARDS THAT MAKE THE GAME NOT PROCESS WHEN I HIT END TURN?

Jazzepi, I feel your pain. Here is an idea. Copy/paste everything from this
thread that refers to the standards that raise troop morale, and make a new thread.
A lot of people here like a good joke, and I must admit I laughed out loud while
reading this, but fortunately we are short on real *******s.

Jazzepi
September 1st, 2007, 11:05 PM
It's okay. Maybe my question should be more about how morale + morale lowering spells works. Troops in the battles I was fighting appeared to gain back 20+ morale in a single turn.

Hey I came here for the disscussion of national standards.

I think my nations standards are far too low, I mean they let me live here.

Standard bearers? Oh, the things the standards are attached to? Yes, those could definitely use some work. They all look the same!

Off-topic: Don't know anything about how the ability works. The nations I like don't have standards.

If standards are good, then why are the horn blowers of the Maverni considered to be a waste?

Valandil
September 4th, 2007, 02:56 AM
Blowing the horn prematurely isn't necessarily indicative of high standards, only low tolerance.

Caduceus
September 4th, 2007, 01:44 PM
PMHD - Premature horn discharge is a unrecognized chronic disorder that most horn blowers and bards are unwilling to admit to.

Most commonly after an examination for another trivial medical problem, once the practitioner has established a rapport of understanding and support, the subject can be broached.

Current therapies include placing a wad in said trumpet or other wind device. Such a device is usually readily available, mixed equal parts of wax or other sticky subtance and placed in the bell of the device. It then becomes more difficult to blow his wad too early.
