Been looking for a new game, but nothing has popped up on the boards lately, so decided to just start a new one. Would like to do a 10 player, EA game, with the Worthy Heroes mod. No graphs, renaming allowed, the usual.
Post here if interested, with your nation choices.

Would you like to run this on the LlamaServer Thrawn?
I tell you what - I'm going away very shortly, but I can set the game up to accept pretenders, then start it when I get back, in a week. So, the option to use the LlamaServer is there if you don't mind waiting a week for the start. Getting the game organised and all the pretenders in will probably take a while anyway, so that shouldn't set you back too much.

Looks ok. I hope I end up in that landmass in the southwest. If I make it to the isthmus first I'll have a great chokepoint on that land.
The loop de loop river in the northwest is neat.

Awesome, Evilhomer. Got you. We now have 10, let's make pretenders. We're using the llamaserver, so you'll send directly there. I think you just have to put the game name in the subject, and send it to the pretender address there. I have that address around here somewhere.
I will make the map E-W wrap-around.
Do we all have the Worthy Heroes mod? I'll post it on the first page.
Lazy_Perfectionist
September 7th, 2007, 11:57 PM
I've got worthy heroes 1.7b.
I can figure out where to put the map, but where does the .rgb file go?
Edit:
I like the basic geography of that random map, but i'd appreciate it if a few of those border mountains were converted to real mountains, please.
Thrawn
September 8th, 2007, 12:51 PM
I think the .rgb goes in the same folder, Lazy.
I really don't have any mad editing experience. I thought making it wraparound would be easy, but it doesn't seem to be. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif Would anyone like to volunteer to make it wraparound or have any suggestions?
Lazy_Perfectionist
September 8th, 2007, 02:10 PM
I'll take a peek at it, but I don't have any experience. The odds of me achieving are slim. I have some time to kill.
Now are you having trouble with the technical component or the aesthetic component of making it wraparound?
As an alternative, you could try adding cave provinces, providing for some long distance travel.
Thrawn
September 8th, 2007, 03:02 PM
I am having trouble with all of it. All I did with that map was use the random map generator. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif That's about the extent of my skill.
Lazy_Perfectionist
September 8th, 2007, 07:23 PM
Do you have GIMP or Photoshop, Thrawn?
Thrawn
September 8th, 2007, 07:28 PM
Photoshop
Lazy_Perfectionist
September 8th, 2007, 07:46 PM
My directions are in a mishmash of GIMP/Photoshop-ese at the moment, since this isn't a formally written tutorial. Pardon any sloppiness. I can clarify a section if required, and make sure its in proper photoshop-ese.
First of all, with this map, it would be easiest to make it wrap around north-south. If you wanted to make the east side wrap around to the west, then you'd have to put in some significant time drawing.
Offsets: http://www.cadtutor.net/dd/photo/seamless/seamless.html
For the graphical component, I suggest setting an offset. This way you can see how the edges will match up. For the first round of work, just use the color picker to select the border color, and then select a slightly fuzzy brush and redraw the province borders to your preference.
Keep in mind that provinces are determined with a single pure white pixel, if you decide to join two provinces.
Since this is only a random map, we're going to take a few shortcuts and be a little sloppy. When the seam is obvious, but the terrain is similar, try using a smudge tool, and dragging it accross the seam. Alternatively, you could try a blur tool. When the terrain along the seam differs wildly, try using the clone tool.
This won't be perfect looking, but it will get the job done, graphically.
Technically? I'm a noob. I've been meaning to look into this so I can fix my own random maps to include some real mountains. I've got nothing yet, but am looking into it.
Thrawn

So, if you haven't already (and I see a lot of you have), you can upload your pretenders to the llamaserver whenever you're ready.
Send them to: pretenders@llamaserver.net
Just attach them to the email, and make sure your subject line contains "consecratedground".
Lazy_Perfectionist
September 10th, 2007, 12:52 AM
Would you like me to hurry, or can you wait until Tuesday for me to send it in (my pretender)?
It's not necessary to delay, just by Tuesday I'll have my manual back. I can certainly start earlier.
Technically, the map editor has some wraparound functionality. There's some documentation on it in acrobat reader post document format, but here's what you need to know for wraparound functionality.
One caveat, however. I'm not sure how, and if you set wraparound to function only in one direction. By default, the map wraps around north-south, east-west. You don't need to link those, but it makes for some visual ugliness. Perhaps a faux border along the edges? Or actually reading the documentation.
Basics of using the map editor.
1). Run Dominions 3. Go to Game Tools, Map Editor, Load map. Enter in "Consecrated_Ground" w/o quotes, with underscore to load a file in your maps folder. Some operating systems are case sensitive (not windows).
2). There will be a toolbar on your left. At the very bottom is a box marked wraparound. Check that. Note that this DOES NOT connect those particular provinces. You'll have do that manually.
3). Scroll to provinces along the seams, or former edges of the map. Select a province with a right-click, and left-click to connect it to another province.
4). Save frequently with different filenames (cg1, cg2).
There may be some map editor tutorials available, but I don't have my manual available, nor the energy to find it in the forums, tonight.
EDIT: So you don't have to reload every time you make a mistake...
Control-left-click removes an accidental province connection.
Just found this out. Heh.

I think the game is already set up and will start as soon as the pretenders are in. It was the same with DoomChicken and that game started when llama was away.
Lazy_Perfectionist
September 10th, 2007, 01:38 PM
The only reason BAG can't start is because of the mod nations. Hadrian's probably right, since we don't have any mod nations. Though I don't know about the whole custom map part- how do we let the game know which map we're using?
Hadrian_II
September 10th, 2007, 02:34 PM
I think llama set that up, doom chicken uses edis cradle of the dominions map, and that is no different to any other custom map.

Hello from HolidayLand!
So, this game won't actually start automatically, because it doesn't know what map and stuff to use. The two reasons a game might not be able to start in my absence are (a) it has mod nations, or (b) I don't know what settings it should use when I leave.
Back in a few days though.
By the way, has anyone had a play with paradoxharbinger's map generator? I haven't yet, but I know it can make wraparound maps. I think it might be a bit tricky to use though.

The game wants heroes 1.7. I can only find 1.7b in the forum. It seems this version fixed a bug in 1.7.
If we use 1.7 someone have to upload this version here.
Second Question: What are the victory conditions? (VP? How much of them?)

Yeah, I have Worthy Heroes 1.7b also.
Lazy_Perfectionist
September 15th, 2007, 05:48 PM
Upload... Attached 1.7
I'm really interested to see the name Ymir. I'm curious as to whether their interpretation of the great giant is any way similar to mine when I played LA Atlantis.
I'm a bit disappointed with the map. The layout is interesting, but I've got no actual mountains, just border mountains. Which means I'm kept out of my only defensible fortress, the Mountain Citadel, and left with options mostly in the low hundreds (with the farmland fortification the lone exception, with less than half the defense.
But that's a factor of randoms, and I got so caught up in wraparound I forgot to ask for real mountains. Stupidly, I've learned how to do just this for the random map I've been working on for BAG, but forgot to even request or think of it for this one.
I'm willing to play on, however. This is my first MP with Yomi, and I don't expect to last that long even if all the cards are stacked in my favor. I do expect to give it a hard fight and learn as much as I can, though.

I found 5 Victory Points on the map. Are there any reasons for only 5 VPs and i repeat my question from the post above: What are the victory conditions? Do we play with VP victory?
Thrawn
September 16th, 2007, 12:45 PM
Unless llama configured the game for a victory point win, we are playing with plain vanilla victory conditions. I didn't mention victory points in the first post, so I'm sure he didn't.
llamabeast
September 17th, 2007, 06:25 AM
Yep, no victory points.
As for worthy heroes - I believe the server is using heroes 1.7b, but the file's called heroes1_7.dm. I guess I must have renamed it, I can't remember why. Doesn't seem like a very helpful thing to do with hindsight (and a lack of memory)!
Anyway, you should use 1.7b, renamed to heroes1_7.dm. I'll attach it here for convenience. Because there is almost no difference between the versions this won't cause you problems in any other games.
llamabeast
September 17th, 2007, 06:27 AM
PS Maps often end up with VPs on them even when they are not VP games. I say often - I think always in my experience, but there may be some underlying reason I'm missing. Anyway, the VPs are only important in that they produce 1 candle per turn for the owner (so they are like having a temple if you had a dominion 10 god).

Hey, Evilhomer? Peace, war? Uneasy joining of the two? We had that unfortunate early skirmish, and once this turn's over I'll be committed to a course of action.
I am willing to make amends for this series of accidental conflicts... but I'm not eager for the delay of in-game communications.
Neifelheim is often known as a rush nation, so I'm a bit nervous. As well, I'm in the middle of negotiations with Ermor... though my opening offer wasn't greeted quite like I hoped (They took the two provinces I'd hoped for), I might be able to negotiate a lesser peace.
I don't need an immediate pact, but I am a little uncertain of what to do, other than refer to Sun-Tzu, Chapter IV, verse 15. I'm often too impetuous - that's costing me in Doom Chicken.
"Thus it is that in war the victorious strategist only seeks battle after the victory has been won, whereas he who is destined to defeat first fights and afterward looks for victory."
I'm trying to avoid the recklessness of the second part. I will withdraw from Plothai this turn. I am moving on the Sinks, however.

Yep. Everyone stalled....
The email says it sent me 29 (twice!) but the second one appears to be turn 30 (in game). And on the website the stale data shows 28 while the turn appears as 29.
What this means? It means I have no frikkin clue which turn to work on and send in.

Is everyone back on board turn wise with llamaserver? Janlm, are willing to continue in spite of your staled turn? Not sure why that happened just to you, I know it's frustrating.

Something is seriously wrong with the current turn (#30). Not to complain too much, I know the hosts are working hard for our collective beneifit but there are three bad things ...
1. I requested a turn resend from llamaserver and it sent one, but there was nothing attached to the file.
2. I sent in a turn 29, based on the last one that was sent, roughtly a week ago, but it reported I staled.
3. It also reported my arch enemy, Vanheim, who we still hate grrrr, winning a battle in Pastenna ... However, when I look at the map it shows my troops control pastenna and I can recruit units and raise PD, the whole 9 yards. I am not sure what to do at this point ...
Any suggestions are welcome?
Janlm
October 26th, 2007, 04:55 PM
I think the problem must be the two versions of turn 29, you must have picked the wrong one and it has messed up the game for you. I don't know about the resends or the stale turn though. I agree with you that strange things is going on..
davegg
October 26th, 2007, 05:17 PM
You think there is any way to fix things?
calmon
October 27th, 2007, 01:56 PM
You normally get an response from llamabeast that your turnfile is wrong. Check your emails in response to your turn.
The status page for the game showed ermor as the only missing nation. Didn't you check this page? Its on the llama server.
And you should have get a remember 3 hours before hosting that your turn is still missing.
However vanheim missed the turn before so it should not that bad for you.

davegg

Yes, I looked at the status page, and i did not receive any email regarding an unsynched turn

Uhmm...Can't do anything myself, but occasionally when a single turns' given trouble, in games I've administered... Send the turn file in with a different email address - you can do this without changing where it sends the turns to. It has occasionally helped.
Stupid ideas... use at your own risk.
Delete folder. Redownload turn file. Problem: Resend not working.
Uhmm... Delete .2h (order file). Try again. You still have your turn file in the directory, right?
Check to see whether your email's storage space is full. It doesn't fill up for me often, but someone emailed me this softphone voip software, and that filled me right up to the limit.
Postpone until the llama makes his daily email check?
Open your game, tap to file manager, delete .2h, and resave.
Alternatively, whenever I said delete, you could just rename to early_ermor.2h.bak or whatever, so the game won't recognize it.

Davegg, did you resolve any of your problems. When Llamaserver hiccuped recently, it sent two turns with the same turn # (29). The first (earlier) of those turns was the right one to play. I think, if you didn't play it, the system will send you the wrong turn if you request it.

To calmon, no the status page said I played

It looks like that the new turn (I think its 31) just ignored what i said last time, gave me a stale and then synched me up to everyone else. So, I am back to playing.

Hello guys - sorry, this thread wasn't on my favourites list for some reason, so I missed all this (the favourites get e-mailed to me). Anyway - davegg - sorry the messup earlier led to you staling. I can sort of guess what happened although I'm not sure, but anyway it's obviously a consequence of that earlier messup at the start of the week and shouldn't happen again. Hope it hasn't disadvantaged you too severely.

Hi everyone,
So, while I was doing stuff with the server this morning (starting the
new game Urapara, in fact), Something Very Strange happened. Specifically,
the file with the data about all the games in it got replaced by a version
from a week or two back. This is, actually, Impossible, since I don't even
keep old versions of that file. Definitely a case of a ghost in the
machine.
Anyway, the consequence was that every single game hosted (the hosting
times were in the past you see). So you'll all have got erroneous "new
turns". I've now rolled back all the games, but the unfortunate side
effect is that you'll all have to send your turns in again if you'd
already done so. Also the hosting times are later than they would have
been, and the 'Request turn resend' option won't work this turn
Summary: Ignore the most recent "New turn" e-mail, and if you had already
sent in your 2h file for the current turn, send it in again.
Anyway, sorry about that.
llamabeast

My read of the above, is that we should ignore the turn files we received (mine says 29). If we had already played our turn, we should resubmit the 2H file. If we haven't yet played our turns, we should do so, and submit the 2H file. In other words, ignore the new turn that came in.
llamabeast
November 1st, 2007, 01:11 PM
Yes, that's right.
Hmm, maybe I suffer from an unclear writing style. I will have to work on it.
Thrawn
November 1st, 2007, 01:36 PM
Well, I tried to send in the last turn file. This is the message I received:
"Hello from the LlamaServer.
I received an e-mail from you, but unfortunately there seems to be a problem with it.
Your 2h file seems to be for a different turn number to the one the game's currently on. The 2h file is for turn 32, while the game is now on turn 33."
Any suggestions Llama? I received two turn files in the mail. Is one of those maybe turn 33, even though it says 29? Did everyone else have this problem?
llamabeast
November 1st, 2007, 01:44 PM
Looking into it...
llamabeast
November 1st, 2007, 02:11 PM
Okay - I'll be honest, I'm really really confused.
I can see that it sent turn 32 out at some point, and almost all of you had sent in your 2h files for turn 32.
Then, when it went crazy, it sent out its "Turn 29"s, which I _think_ were actually Turn 34s, but I'm not sure as I have no way of checking. This is strange, because it implies that it hosted twice, which makes no sense.
The earliest fatherland file (the one needed to host the game) that I have is Turn 33. This would be fine, since almost everyone took turn 32. The only trouble is that I don't have the .trn files for turn 33, so it may not be possible for you to actually take the turn. So, I would like it if you could check all the e-mails you got, and see if any of them are turn 33 (Early Winter). If they are, please let me know, and that is the turn to take.
davegg
November 1st, 2007, 02:23 PM
I am offically confused, as well. Maybe turn #29 is haunted? Anyway ...
I received two turn files, whose subject lines indicate they are from turn #29. I wasafraid to try to play them on my saved game, which is on turn #32.
To make a long story short, I made a copy of the saved game and downloaded the first emailed turn. It correctly played turn 32 and gave me turn 33 to play, so I think thats the right way to go.
Hope this helps,
DV
llamabeast
November 1st, 2007, 02:29 PM

Yes, in that case, play the one which is really turn 33, "early winter".
Apologies guys.
calmon
November 1st, 2007, 02:43 PM

llamabeast
November 1st, 2007, 02:46 PM
And what about the first one?
calmon
November 1st, 2007, 04:13 PM
First one is turn 33 (subject from email says 29).
However in this one i stalled as well because i were making my turn, had 6 hours time before hosting and suddently the game hosted and i got the email with the new 2 turns in.
Does it mean you can't recover it correctly?
llamabeast

After that stall, I had a WTF moment looking at my gems and was wondering if the game was bugged. I was about to make a post to that effect, then reviewed my turn history.
Turn 42, 26 Death Gems (small trade occured)
Income +8.
Turn 43, 68 Death Gems (trade ceased) (2 handful of death gem events)
Turn 44, 93 Death Gems (unnatural plague, corpse gems)
Turn 45, 109 Death Gems (barbarians attack)
Turn 46, 122 Death Gems (barbarians attack, zealots join)
Nearly 100 additional gems? (some down to just regular income, 32+, depending on when I got those additional sites). I guess I really shouldn't underestimate the effects of a death, fortune, and magic heavy dominion.
