You think you're kidding. But that's one of the two most important reasons. Many
good players take heavy misfortune. A bad event in one of the first turns can
often be seen on the income graph, and paints a big bullseye on the unlucky
nation. Much in the same manner, a lot can be learned about your pretender from
the research graph. When there is no research for the first turn, one can deduce
a sleeping pretender, and decide to attack.

The second reason is that at some point, everyone decides to attack the leader.
The graphs are what people use to decide who the leader is, more often than not.
Graphs off often leads to a more challenging game and really interesting diplomacy.

Lingchih
September 25th, 2007, 03:48 AM
Yes, I was only half-kidding. I've recently played in a graphs off game, and it was very challenging to try and decide who was actually powerful. I like it... although, in a large game, I tend to want the graphs on. In a game of this size, graphs off should be fine.

tibbs
September 25th, 2007, 11:28 AM
If there is a choice I would prefer graphs off as well. I think it is more realistic along with the reasons stated above by the others.

It's funny, out of all the graphs I actually think that research tell your opponent the most about what sort of game plan you have. Though really it's a combination of exact information in several areas combined that can give you a good idea of your opponent's strategy, position, and abilities without ever sending a single scout. It's completely unrealistic.

Everyone who uploaded a pretender early might want to recheck--the server went down for a while according to a post here and when I checked last night, all the slots were open, even those previously claimed early on in the thread.

no, its fine playing if you're inexperienced.. just be careful, and understand that most likely someone will stomp on you. Or there are "noob" games started around here pretty frequently; those are a great way to learn. Of course, being squished is also a pretty good way to learn http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Jazzepi
September 30th, 2007, 11:56 PM
There's no way to get rid of a pretender, that I know of, once they've been uploaded. These games that Zach hosts aren't terribly well organized, and this has happened every one of them I've been in. Invariably the person will stale for several turns since nobody is playing him, and he'll either be overrun, or set to AI.

lol it was only one - tibbs changed his nation choice, so the uploaded pretender was set to AI. If he doesn't get this turn on time, he'll be set to AI as well...

Hi, just browsing, and saw you had troubles ...

A workaround for the "Waiting for game info" bug is:

- Play in windowed mode.

- Connect to the server and get "Waiting for game info".

- Do not close the window!

- Start a new instance of the game, connecting to the server again, with the original window open.

heh... pan attacked me, after never replying to my attempts to come to some polite agreement, and forced me to run away the turn I finally broke through the Aby capital walls... they occupied it immediately, while I had to bide my time.

but then this last turn he raided my supply line w/ his POD... defense 34 and 2 eye shields... only problem is all that left him with was a "useless kick -5 damage". First blood went to Ulm!

The incredible, fearsome horde of 40 Jotunheimian Shamblers that had Tag Klatu shaking in his shoes for so long tried a raid of Ulms vital, precious sea zone and were driven off by the flimsy, vulnerable 120+ defenders!

Yes. Ulm's territory is still secure. For now. He'd best watch his borders carefully, though. I saw some dangerous looking arctic foxes in some bushes. They probably work for the giants!

Nice try with the propaganda, Argatha. You ignored our 3 turn NAP and attacked me with no provocation. Too bad my knights of Avalon squashed your pathetic elephant army at your second attack point. While your siege at my swamp fort in the winter time was ill advised as well. You lost your entire army trying to take it while the forces of man lost...1. Next time try not to fight your cold blooded Argathanians in a swamp during the winter. Or your 30+ hit point guys will just tire and lose to my 1hp bugs again.

So not only is Folket dishonorable and dishonest, but he's also a cheating Sack of S**t. Did he really think that attacking my capital with 4 spies in one turn to burn up my gems was a valid tactic?

It's not bad enough that he claims to want a NAP while trying to goad me into war (massively insulting my intelligence in the process), but he also has to cheat?

Will you be proud of a victory, Folket? If you win, will you be able to look in the mirror and say "I won fair and square because I was the better player."? You must be about twelve years old.

Right. That will be enough. This sort of language has no place on the forum and the personal attacks and accusations against a fellow forumer rather than lambasting his nation in the context of the game are totally unacceptable. If you're unable to conduct yourself appropriately on the forum, then keep your mouth shut. I will not bother to issue a second warning. Since I don't actually have direct mod powers here, any further lapses brought to my attention will involve incantations known to summon beings called Administrators, who generally do not like being disturbed for trivial reasons.

Is that clear?

"cheating" involves hacking the client or server; or going against game-specific rules. I don't see that as happening - if he broke his agreement, that may be dishonorable but isn't cheating per se. trying to burn up your gems by having an initial attack is "gamey", maybe an exploit... i guess you could argue along those lines.

I didn't demand. I respectfully requested that you cede it to me, as it bordered my capital. I also indicated that your having troops there made me nervous.

When you said no, I asked if I could trade you something for it. You didn't even bother to decline bartering. You just threatened (as you admitted above).

There was no reason you needed an army there. Neither of us are playing aquatic factions. Without help from land armies, our naval forces would be no major threat to each other. Nevertheless, you built up your army every turn, forcing me to keep my army in the fort when it could have been useful elsewhere. Didn't the London blitz teach you that you can't bully someone into submission? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

In your shoes I would have withdrawn the army as soon as I realised it was annoying you. It would be simple courtesy, especially since I was no threat to you. If we'd agreed to a NAP and then I invaded your sea region, then I'd show myself a liar, and achieve nothing special by it. We'd just start a pointless naval arms race, which any REAL sea faction would laugh at, wasting our gold in the process.

Only reason I could see why he did not want to sign a NAP was that he was going to attack so I reinforced the province. This made Ubercat very upset and he sent an insulting message, at that point I put on the lid and decided to attack him.

And you have now seen with your own eyes that I only built 40 Shamblers, just as I said. Not much of a force to capture your whole ocean and then take your capital. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif I wouldn't have built them at all, except that I had an inland seazone to grab. As for insulting you, I believe I questioned your knowlege of human nature, in reference to your attempts to bully me into a NAP. Was there something else I said?

I did send four scouts into your capital to whip up some unrest. You found them all and I have looked at all four battles and your mages did not use any gems.

News from the war.

I'm speaking to you now from the great capital of Ulm, where the mood of late has turned to trepidation. Last night, the skies rained a strange sight. Poisonous toads fell throughout the streets.

At first the citizens laughed. One proud little granny was heard to say "Toads!? The best they can do is toads??" This reporter suspects she isn't laughing anymore. I've learned that the cities wells have filled with the little things, and they've started dying; spoiling the water.

As I look outside my window I see angry mobs in the streets. It appears there is a massive draft riot going on. The local economy is in shambles. One is forced to wonder how Ulm will be able to continue supporting her massive army?

I have just recieved word that Jotunheims army is safe behind the walls of it's capital. The Ulmish horde finally invaded. It must have come as quite a shock to Tag Klatu that, despite controlling one of the largest armies in the world, he could not break through the walls. He will need to move up reinforcements, and the population in his capital is refusing to enlist. Quite a dilemma for the god of Ulm. Perhaps he can starve them out?

As always, where ever the news is today, you'll find your trusty reporter keeping you up to date. Good morning and good luck.

A sad message from the newsdesk.

It is with heavy heart that we must announce the illness of our star reporter, NonBias. Despite taking great care, he was unable to avoid contracting one of the plagues that have rocked the great city of Ulm. Apparently more toads fell recently, denying the city the chance to recover that it so desperately needed.

He didn't consider leaving for an instant. Knowing the danger, he thought only of his public and their need to know the news of the day.

This editor, on behalf of all the staff here, would like to thank the Lt. Governor of Ulm, who has generously offered NonBias a room in the VIP ward of the new hospital which the Governors palace has recently been converted into. The former governor is also ill. With the blessings of his god, Tag Klatu, may the Lt Governor remain healthy.

NonBias was able to send us some information, and vows to continue his reporting until such time as his bed is turned over to another patient. May that day be far off, unless he has a miraculous recovery!

Apparently the bulk of the staff at Ulms prestigious College of Alchaemical research have contracted plagues. They have bravely sworn to continue their work until the fever grows too great and they take to their death beds! It appears that NonBias will have some very interesting ward mates. if he lives long enough, perhaps he can provide us with a fascinating interview.

We have just received word that a small Ulmish army also suffered from the Rain of Toads. It was apparently marching north towards Jotunheim, but we're not certain of it's location or health status. If we receive more accurate information we will let you know.

As always, when you need to know, we will let you know, all there is to know.

Interesting developments from the Ulm-Jotun war of late. Tag Klatu dispatched a sub force from his siege of Jotunheim to grab more land. Apparently it seemed a reasonable strategy since the siegers could not break through. Unfortunately for the warlord, Jotunheim ambushed it with an army which Ulm apparently hadn't known existed. The attackers were defeated with heavy losses and it became clear that he would have to abandon the siege if he expected to send a large enough force to expand further.

Meanwhile, an as yet undisclosed enemy launched a raid on one of Ulms southern forts. Things are getting interesting for the ambitious conqueror.

Ulm was looking at some good news when her capital was spared from the Toads for an entire month, but celebrations were premature. After raining on two other forts the little croakers returned to Ulm. One definite bit of good news for Tag. A Jotun raid was defeated in its entirety. That pack of wolves will not be attacking again!

An update from Jotunheim

I was finally able to penetrate the besieged fortress. Let me say it was not an easy feat. Over 300 Ulmish troops have the city firmly surrounded. I dressed up as an oil boy and gradually made my way closer to the wall while responding to one "Oilcan!" request after another. After nightfall I slipped into the city, welcomed by the gracious guards once I identified myself.

I was quite surprised at what I found. I had expected the town to be full of hungry giants. I was even fearful of ending up in a cookpot myself. It seems however that despite needing prodigious amounts of food, the giants were well fed! It appears that they wisely made preparations for a siege by securing a plentiful supply of magic broth! I don't know what exactly is magical about it; in fact the giants seem to be getting a little tired of it. But it does keep their bellies full.

As for the fighting, I saw no action except some streams of fire shooting from the walls and into the surrounding Ulmish horde. I can only surmise that a few troops may have been incinerated.

I will continue to keep you posted from my current vantage point. I don't want to risk having to explain to the Ulmish troops why I was in the city. Press credentials only go so far!

From the Newsdesk...

Hello everybody. Today we have a special guest in the studio to do some expert strategic analysis for us. Eldred served in the elite Aquilonian Black Dragons during the last Pict war, so he definitely knows a thing or two about strategy!

Jonah: Eldrad, why don't you start by telling us what you see as the big picture for this Ulm-Jotunheim war?

Eldrad: Well Jonah, I can't see this ending well for Ulm. Tag Klatu has committed the best army he has, in fact the only real army Ulm has, to a fruitless siege of the Jotun capital. He's losing valuable lands, err hehe.. I should say waters.. to another foe, but he doesn't want to lose face by abandoning the siege. In fact...

Jonah: That's very interesting. We in the studio have been trying to figure out what started this war in the first place. We haven't had any luck. Could you shed any light on the origins of the war for us?

Eldred: You redirected me from my point, to put me on my point! As I was just starting to say, it is ironic that this war started over Ulms fear of Jotun naval power. Some months ago..

Jonah: Wait. You're telling me that Tag feared that the giants would invade Ulm by sea? That must be what you mean because Jotunheim had no land routes to reach them.

Eldred: That's exactly what I mean. And the greatest irony is that Ulm went to all that trouble to get to Jotunheim by land, and now is losing territory to a real naval power!

Jonah: Fascinating... Oh.. I see that we're out of time. Thank you for your time in giving this interview. It was nice to meet you!

Eldred: Thank you Jonah. It was a pleasure!

Jonah: And to the rest of you, good morning and good luck!

That battle at your fortress went very well for me. Your casters really had it out for those trolls. They really couldnt have picked a worse target for you to inflict some casulties with. Regenerating trolls with lots of hits soak fire clouds and magma bolts much better than the knights or men at arms would have.

I believe you did forget our NAP and hold no hard feelings at all. I just role play it as your Evil Moloch was the perpertraitor. Also, when you attacked me you were at a disadvantage nation vs nation wise. Though you had an outstanding plan with that darkness and the elephants. I think your only flaw was attacking the swamp fort in the winter with your cold blooded guys. Too many players forget to take terrain and weather into consideration.. your blessed cold blooded guys were over 10 burden due to the swamp and cold penalty. Throw in 6 or 7 swarms of bugs and your guys were at 70+ fatigue when the knights sallied forth... of course your death mage using up all of his gems on the 20 PD of the castle was also huge. next time give him only enough to cast darkness and give the rest to a commander who cant cast spells.

From the Newsdesk

I want to start by apologising for the spottiness of our news updates. The recent war has caused a lot of disruption around here.

As of now, the Ulmish siege of Jotunheim has been broken. Apparently the giants grew tired of eating magical broth and decided that Ulmsmen would make a welcome change. They sortied out and crushed the enemy army. At the same time, their other force moved in and retook some land from the invaders.

Currently Ulm appears to have scraped together a backup army and we're waiting to see where the next battle will take place. One thing seems certain. If Ulm loses this one, they will have nothing left sufficient to keep Jotunheim from returning the invasion favor.

As for the wars innocent victims, a great many Ulmish civilians appear to be suffering greatly from Jotunheims magic retaliation. We've learned that the UCDO has created a new alarm specifically to warn of falling toads. It sounds like a triple croak followed by a sort of grunting noise.

Reports indicate that falling toads are so damaging when they die, that some desperate people are attempting to keep them alive so as to minimize the disease spread! One of our reporters claims that he's witnessed an experimental program to lure as many toads away from population centers as possible. It's hard to credit, but he says that he saw a battalion of Ulms finest croaking and hopping towards some nearby woods. They were trying to get recently fallen toads to follow them away from an important town.

It sounds funny but it's hard to blame them. The airborne toads have caused so much economic harm that, despite still holding great swathes of Jotunheims territory, Ulms GDP has fallen below the giants.

Well, that's it for this edition. We will update you with the news that you need to know, when there is news that you need to know.

I will not be able to do a turn until next friday night. I am going to be out of town and can not find my game CD to copy it onto my labtop. Sorry

oops i guess miscounted.
...and seeing as you're mostly in the lead at this point, its only proper that we gang up on you now.

yah, its ok - like i said, we didn't even actually have a NAP - it just worked out that, since we didn't start out fighting, we had good relations. np on attacking me now, it's understandable http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

I find it very unfair to call archaeolept a new player. He has played plenty of dom2 and is well known to win his games.

lol sorry, it was tongue in cheek - i'm new to domIII, but not exactly a nub http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

edit: hey, troll moose riders - i've never actually encountered them before - they're recruited at a site i take it?

The turn processes right after the last player submits his turn. This means that the last player can take a double turn, which is not only fun, but speeds the game up a little too.

I've only seen them as a result of summoning a Troll King. He comes with 2(?) moose riders as well as some war trolls and regular trolls. It would be cool to find a site where they're available.

Proving that you are not a nub! Trolls are such a waste of gems I am ashamed using them against you. Troll moose knights do look cool though.:P

troll court isn't that bad - you get a kick-*** E3 mage. I'd summon one if i had any earth gems http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Machaka is down to one sieged castle... i have the feeling he's given up the ghost on this one - i think we'll be waiting a long time for him to submit a turn http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Can we go back to a hosting timer, now?

actually, given the size of the war, and that we're getting close to the late game, i'd love a little bit more slack on the turns... maybe have the timer be at 60 instead of 48? Just makes the pacing less hectic given the number of units we're getting now... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

Rytek

I would be ok with 60 hours for you archaeolept. Hopefully MrT can help solve that problem with the huge number of units that you have! Happy new years.

Ouch. Well, thats it, I don't see a way to stop Mictlin. That cost me over 400 gems worth. 2 Troll kings, 2 Sea troll kings, 1 Ivy king all of their equipment lost.I would like to see that fight again with the stupid witch I had cloud trapezing in to cast mist warriors. I switched her armor at the last moment and forgot to order her to trapeze again. Mist warriors may have given the SC's the time they needed to kill your army.Very nicely done. I looked at the turn very quickly-- I have to go back and see how you surrounded the province. I didnt think you had the means to do it.

It so irritates me when the ai doesnt pick the right guy to buff. Notice how my sea troll kings cast quickness on every other troop accept the Troll kings and Ivy kings? I even placed them up front and away from anything else so that they would buff each other. Sigh...Battle plans never survive meeting the enemy.

yeah Mictlan may have won it. there is nothing I can do to help Man. Atlantis is on the defensive.

archaeolept

in casting buffs, they usually cast it on the largest number of units, maybe the largest number of HP.

Mist warriors wouldn't have done all that much good, as any penetrating hit from the sacreds' F9 fire attack would have dispelled it. would have slowed down the carnage a bit though.

OTOH, my guy didn't cast will of the fates - he must have blown an extra pearl on something else http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

it was an epic battle, and amazing how that bastard earth king got paralyzed and crippled at just the right times so that he held the field.

As to surrounding... yah, that was a bit of an error on your part - you should have patrolled your castle w/ your titan or the earth king - however, few of your troops actually ran off, so it didn't cost you as much as it could have.

Rytek
January 2nd, 2008, 11:08 PM
Well, at least the earth king played his part to a T. I figured his high hits would make him target of all your nasty spells and his high MR allowed him to shrug em off.

Agreed. I am not in this game anymore, but I am in several other of Zach's games. If they are not put on a timer soon, then they just should be shut down.

There are other people still playing. The only thing that would make me give up the ghost would be Man staling again, which would be a pretty sure indication that they've given up.

sadly, Man has gone AI. Ermor as well, but that was to be expected. I am probably unstoppable, but Atlantis is still strong, and if the other players wish to join up with him, there could still be a good fight http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Meh. With man dead I'm done. GG guys. I learned a lot about communions. I probably could have ended the war with Manchaka a lot earlier if I hadn't lost like 20 mages in the process of learning how to use communions properly http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
