Hi --

Anyone else having trouble patching on a Mac? I put the patch folder and the dom3 app on the desktop, run patch.command and get

"Patching Dominions 3, please wait...
cp: Info.plist: No such file or directory
cp: PkgInfo: No such file or directory"

If I open up the Dom 3 package, those files are there.
Thanks

Ok, the Mac terminal screen says it fails to patch, but it actually patches. As far as I can tell all the content is there, but the title screen reads 3.09.

Quick, somebody remind how patching can affect MP games. If I patch and the server doesn't, is that a problem?

thejeff
October 9th, 2007, 02:50 PM
Yes. The server must patch first.

If you have an older version I believe the server will inform you and tell you to upgrade.

It's easy to make a copy of the current version before upgrading and switch between the two as needed.

How would that work? Just make a copy the dominions3 folder anywhere, patch the original, and then just use the copy to play online until the servers get patched?

Pretty much. I've only done it on linux, so I don't know if there are any gotchas on Windows, but I don't remember hearing of any.

Since there are no newly patched files, you can just install the 3.08 patch before playing on 3.08 servers and otherwise install the 3.10 patch if you want to play the 3.10 version, too. That means that you can downgrade from 3.10 to 3.08, yes.

Thank you very much IW. It is indeed a measure of your love to the game that you keep supporting it like this. We are grateful for that.

Such dedicated support is, in my experience, extremely rare in the gaming industry.

I see this is 3.10, was there a 3.9?? if so I missed that one and if there was do i need it or just go straight to 3.10? also a friend of mine just picked up the game and he wants to patch up.. is 3.10 the only patch he needs to be up to date, or does he have to load all of them?

Tks for the help

Sombre

You only need 3.10

In fact there was no 3.09 released to the public.

It is common practice in development to have some parity numbers (here: odd) for internal releases only, and the other (here: even) for release to the public, after those internal releases have undergone testing. So these versions are pretty much the same, they're just tagged differently.

3.09 was released to the beta testers and the result of that created 3.10 before you got a patch.

Which I am now (since my PC flipped out). I haven't heard definitively if this is just a version naming error of if we Mac users actually have 3.09.

I think I'm patching incorrectly because my game is messed up. How would one patch under linux?

Dedas
October 13th, 2007, 01:55 PM
1. Extract and overwrite everything from the patch to the dom3 game directory (the one with the executable).
2. Make the binary executable with chmod +x dom3.
3. Play the game.
4. Eat and drink something or you will surely die.
5. Repeat 3.

poopalt
October 13th, 2007, 02:13 PM
Thats what I did, but the game was still messing up. I reinstall dominions and tried it again and the game was still really buggy. It has problems connecting to multi player, problems generating turns, and it just crashes for no reason.

The patch just made the game 5 times buggier, and now I have to downgrade it and be left out of multi player games until they fix the bugs in the patch.

Sombre

Is it possible that you somehow accidentally entered a cd-key other than the one from your manual? That could cause a lot of problems once you patched.

poopalt
October 13th, 2007, 02:28 PM
No, because I reinstalled it 2 times, and if I mistyped a cd key it wouldn't let me play.

I'm not sure this the right place to post about it yet I don't want this to escape notice. There seems to be some serious issues with playing modded nations. They were encountered in modded nations MP game, see here (http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/threads/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=557013&page=0&view=collap sed&sb=5&o=7&fpart=1&vc=1#Post557013)

Sombre
October 16th, 2007, 07:31 AM
This issue has been around for a while, it's just been compounded by the new patch which leaves even less room for mod nations.

I saw a comment above about downgrading to 3.08. Seems I patched to 3.10 too soon, and now I'm out of step in a game with friends. How do I dial back to 3.08, at least for one more turn?

Thanks for any help!

Endoperez
October 18th, 2007, 02:31 PM
For one turn, you could probably just keep on playing. Most versions only differ in battles. When you view a battle hosted in a different version, what you see can differ radically from what happened. However, the battle report will always show the actual losses/deaths, and unless you try using anything added in the patch (recruiting patch-added creatures like the new Hydras, or the new Mictlan/Tien Chi units/commanders), there shouldn't be any major problems.

lch
October 18th, 2007, 05:57 PM
Endoperez, no that is not possible. A client will crash with "game version number too low" if he detects a higher version on a server, a server will crash if he detects the same from a client (when receiving a turn). It is not possible to mix versions in a game.

TwoBits, if you're not on windows, just overwrite your files with those from the 3.08 patch. If you're on windows, use this executable (http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/threads/showflat.php?Number=557238#Post557238) to do your turn.

TwoBits

Hey Ich,

The executable didn't work for me, but the trick you mentioned (fiddling the URL to get the old 3.08 patch) worked just fine.

Thanks!

I already mentioned that and gandal said something about using other ages.

I can't find it now. It was something about a late age nation mod might use a early age nation slot. Does that work or is it just another brain fart of his?

I've also suggested it, but not to circumvent these restrictions.

You can REPLACE (i.e. selectmonster instead of newmonster, or selectnation instead of newnation) a unit or nation, its description etc. You can replace its sprite, but only by adding a new sprite, so this won't help if you want to get more sprites to the game. But you can get more nation slots, and more description "slots", this way.

After installing the new 3.10 "mega-patch" using a Linux installation I now get a segmentation fault when trying to run dom3_x86. No further information is given using the console, just segfault, then core dumped, and that's it. This isn't the first time I've had problems with a Linux patch, after applying the 3.08 Linux patch the game GUI would simply disappear at random intervals, but this time it is, like, really bad.

I have no idea if the problem would persist if I used a Windows installation instead, as I do not currently own a Windows system, but I do think this is Linux specific. Simply downloading the .zip again and overwriting the executable seems to be of no use at all, so I am at a loss.

Does anybody have any suggestions what I should do? There basically isn't anything I as a user can do against a segfault, so maybe it's in the settings, somewhere? I don't have a particularly exotic setup, a plain Debian box on a recent kernel with XFCE4 for the window manager and manually compiled NVidia drivers, nothing that should make a difference.

Contact Shrapnel tech support. You did enter the CD-key from your ring-binder manual correctly?

Outstanding! Thank you! I really appreciate the fact that you are going to extra mile in supporting this game - it was one of the factors in my buying it (after playing the demo). With so many companies making expansions instead of working on the root products, this is a huge breath of fresh air.

Thanks again.

T3hDudeAbides

You did enter the CD-key from your ring-binder manual correctly?

I did apparently, since the very same key worked quite well before. Because the key file doesn't really contain anything other than the key I simply copied it back into the game folder; I didn't think about trying to manually re-enter my serial. But, after deleting the old key file and doing just that, the segfault problem is gone. I have no idea why, given that the key file looks exactly the same now as it did before this really shouldn't even have helped at all, but it did, so thanks anyway. You might want to put that into the readme, maybe.

Now here's to hope the GUI problems are gone as well, made it pretty impossible for me to use multiplayer in 3.08.

Edit: No, they're not :-(

llamabeast
October 28th, 2007, 04:07 PM
T3hDudeAbides, your problems are typical of those experienced by users with banned CD keys - as in, those obtained with pirated versions of the game.

I´m having a strange bug after 3.10: i star new games normally, and thy work normal, but every time i try to use a mod (any mod) the game can´t process the turn...

The turn processing shows a loooooon time (five times normal turn processing times) "AI Thinking" and them crash to the desktop withou any kind of message...

If i don´t use mods the turn processes normally, and if i use mods in a installation without the patch it also processes normally....

What is happening?

Thanks

I tried reinstalling from scratch and it didn´t work... then i noticed that even after unistalling the game the dominions directory was not being deleted in the uninstall process... deleted it manually and reinstalled from scratch and it works now...

Must have been some kind of corrupted file left behind after unistall...

Ummm....the patch release notes say that 1920 X 1200 resolution is supported, but it's not letting me choose that option. The max it allows me is 1620 * 1200...anybody have ideas why this might be the case? Anybody successfully playing with 1900 * 1200 res?

I've got a dual core vision 1.8 GHz, with 2 gigs RAM and an nVidia GE Force 7600 GT adapter...

Help?

Bummer.

Ok, I'll email them.

thanks!

EDIT/UPDATE: I emailed Illwinter, and they got back to me *real* quick. They stated:

There was a bug in selecting that new resolution in dom3. As a work around before we fix it in the next patch, use the following switch when starting dom3:
--res 1920 1200

I did, and it works fine now.

woo hoo! yay Illwinter!
