I am interested...

I'll know if I'll be able to join by this weekend. Don't reserve a slot for me unless I post a list of five preferences, or private message.

If I decide I can't join, I'll offer myself as a sub for whomever might need such.

I have not played a LE game yet, so I'll have to do some testing and get back to you w/nation preferences. Should I PM you or post my preferences here? Thanks

I need a few pointers though.. the balance mod I can understand... to balance things a bit mroe I guess.. shouldn't be a problem

What does the worthy heroes mod do and how will it affect my game, are there things I should do (get mroe luck ?)

please explain.

I'll post my race choice later (LA nub here) IF I'M getting late in responding PLEASE message me I don't want to miss another game.

Welcome DonCorazon, LP, Aethyr, and Aezeal.

DonCorazon: I wouldn't worry too much about what nation you choose. Just review the various choices and then choose the ones that make the "cool light" go on. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Lazy_Perfectionist: It would be *great* if you'd play! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif There is a chance that we won't be able to start this weekend because we're waiting on Quantum_Mechani to update the Conceptual Balance mod for 3.10. Also, we might not have 17 players quickly enough.

Aethyr: You got a slot! You're welcome to PM me your preferences or post them here. I will also send you my email address via PM.

Aezeal: The Worthy Heroes mod simply tweaks the national heroes a little so that the heroes are "mucho funner and specialer". It is not a huge change, and I would not alter your pretender design because of it. Glad you'll be joining us.

Aezeal said:What does the worthy heroes mod do and how will it affect my game, are there things I should do (get mroe luck ?)

The worthy heroes mod and indeed the epic heroes mod (MA only) are great. They do exactly what they say, you get great, groovy heroes. Which generally are alot better than in the normal game.

Download the mods and improve your SP game fun considerably. Remember to see the heroes you have a better chance if you take Luck 3 as one of your scales. I think this gives you 5% chance per turn of one turning up. But I am not 100% certain on this.

Amhazair
November 9th, 2007, 10:38 PM
I heard the chance of getting a hero was 3%/turn +/- your luck scale, so 6% for luck 3, 0% for misfortune 3. I didn't test it myself, so don't quote me on this.

When does the game expect to start? Or rather... after a nation is assigned to me, will I have time to practice or need I select nations I'm familiar with?

Aezeal

so with that mod luck 3 is a must?

PashaDawg
November 10th, 2007, 09:39 AM
Hi LP: I originally hoped to start the game by Sunday, but we need to wait until we have enough players and if we're gonna use the CB mod, we need to wait for QM to update it. If it is going to take QM a long while, then I would recommend that we play Vanilla.

Aezeal: No. Luck 3 is not a must unless you really want the heroes, and they are in no way essential for winning the game. Also, many strategies involve opting for misfortune in order to use the design points elsewhere.

Aezeal
November 10th, 2007, 12:47 PM
a vanilla game would be ok with me..

Lazy_Perfectionist
November 10th, 2007, 12:48 PM
Thanks, Pashadawg, but that's not the answer I'm looking for. Let me rephrase my question:

Roughly speaking (and I won't hold you to this), when will nations be assigned? Roughly speaking, how long after that will it be until we need our pretenders in and the game gets going?

I am specifically interested in how much time I will have to get ready once I'm assigned a specific nation, and whether I can afford to pick a nation I'm unfamiliar with or whether I'll need to select only ones I'm already ready to play.

PashaDawg
November 10th, 2007, 01:07 PM
Hi LP:

I would say we'll have about 1 - 2 days to submit pretenders.

Should I put you on the list of players, or are you still thinking about it? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

my experience w/ the old cb mods and 3.10 is that the spell mod and the nations mod give an error, but the simpler pretender and scale mods don't. oh, and if we were to have until next weekend until we started (since i have no experience w/ late game nations, and would need to experiment on a pretender a bit), I'd consider (against my better judgement and all that is holy) joining in the fun http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Lazy_Perfectionist
November 10th, 2007, 01:59 PM
Hmm... I'm still thinking about it. It's a problem that the only Late Era race I've played is Atlantis. There's plenty of others I'm interested, but haven't played before.

Bluebird
November 10th, 2007, 02:27 PM
Well Lazy - time for some experimentation. I am also trying to pay a nation that I have no real experience with ... do not try to be over-prefectionistic :-)

I do not mind play Vanilla, but I prefer the CB mod. With CB, I feel that I have a better choice of Pretenders. Vanilla has too unbalanced pretenders and you always end up using the same ones. But as I said, I do not really mind.

PashaDawg
November 10th, 2007, 03:36 PM
We could choose to play with just the Conceptual Balance Scales and Pretender mods.

Might also need to play with Endo's quick fix mod for Pythium and Tien Chi.

Well... I'm not interested in perfection, but as from my first venture with Atlantis I need to ensure I can seize even just my surrounding provinces. I'll join in, though I'll be have less reservations about going AI than usual.

In alphabetical order:
Atlantis, Agartha, Caelum, Jomon, Patala, Pangaea, T'ien Ch'i

In order of preference, I'll probably put Atlantis last. I don't like to play the same race in two simultaneous games. Still, it's one I'm familiar with, and with a different starting position, who knows... All the rest are more or less the same to me. Though I prefer having more national summons and a death focus.

I suppose I'll sort them for you anyways, with several other criteria, being undead, strat move, simplicity of concept, vague feeling. It doesn't make a big diff, but if you don't have a die to cast..

Patala, T'ien C'hi, Agartha, Jomon, Pangaea, Caelum, Atlantis

Actually, because of all these monkey debates, I really want Patala.

EDIT:
Patala > Agartha > T'ien C'hi > Pangaea > Jomon > Caelum > Atlantis

Aezeal
November 10th, 2007, 05:12 PM
let me know which race ASAP plz so I can focus on thinking about pretenders.. I usually make double bless pretenders but for these races I might need some research and maybe a completely different strat.. I noticed blessings ain't all.. and good scales work all age..

PashaDawg
November 10th, 2007, 05:28 PM
Hi Aezeal: You can find the map link in the first post of this thread.

One player requested the Conceptual Balance mod early on. I am happy to play vanilla, too, although we might want to use the quickfix that was set up to deal with the broken things in late Pythium and Tien Chi. See here: http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/threads/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=556062&page=1&view=collap sed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1

We will probably use the Worthy Heroes mod, too.

We will finalize all such details in the next day or so once we have 17 players.

Wraithlord sent me the following comment yesterday in connection with the RAND game, and I thought it would be best to offer this up to you all, in case players decide to play Vanilla instead (the RAND game would use the same mods as this game):

"I ran a short test game with the said mods and of a few battles one
actually gave different battle results than seen in battle replay. I'm
not really sure what to make of it."

Wraithlord was not sure if the same problem would result in 3.10 Vanilla. Does anybody else have thoughts or similar experiences?

I'll shoot to make a decision by tonight re whether to stay with the current mod set.

If vanilla, you need one of the hotfixes mods.

archaeolept
November 12th, 2007, 01:36 PM
what mods is wraithlord referring to? I can't run the old CB mod w/ 3.10 w/out it erroring out (nagot glick fell). The differing battle reports is an old issue, and there seem to be a number of things that could cause it. Personally, it doesn't bother me - an inspection of the troops will show you what is left, and the battle it does show is an equally valid and informative possibility http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

PashaDawg

We'd be using the following mods, according to my current plan:

CB Scales Mod
CB Pretender Mod
Worthy Heroes Mod 1.8
and
Endoperez's Quickfix mod for Dom 3.10 (It fixes Late Pythium's sacred-hydra issue and an issue with Tien Chi.)

The complete CB mod needed to be fixed. IIRC, this was because of spelling chanages in Dom 3.10. I have a fixed version of the the full CB mod, but I don't think the errors were an issue in the Scales and Pretender mods. Correct me if I am wrong. (I'll try to do some tests when I get home.)

Bluebird's suggestion is a good one. I will email everyone a zip of the needed mods tonight. I will include the read-me files that I have about the CB-mods. Important question:
Password protect our pretenders?
With PBEM, no-one can grab our turns, except Pashadawg, so I suggest no password protection. Or, if people have already sent-in password protected pretenders, I recommend you set a masterpassword and write it down, Pashadawg.

I've been unable to contact one particular staller... its quite annoying.

PashaDawg

Welcome Wokeye. I sent you a private message with my email. I can send you the mods and other important information.

Because Wokeye is Down Under, we might wait until Saturday to start the game. There are fewer hours in the day when we are both awake, which can delay tasks and communication. However, it would be great, Wokeye, if we were able to start tonight (Friday, Boston time).

Regarding passwords, I always set a master password just in case. Players are not required to use passwords. However, I actually prefer them, because sometimes I accidentally click another player's turn when trying to open my own. I hate that, because if there is no password, then I have to cast my eyes away and try to close the turn without saving but without really seeing the turn. Then I suffer through a 6.844 second period feeling embarrassed and dirty. So, passwords are encouraged but not required. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Yes. Thanksgiving is the holiday where we all have a feast (usually Turkey). It also commemorates the first "Thanksgiving" in the Plymouth Colony by the English Puritan Pilgrims and local Native Americans in 1620 or so, if I recall correctly. It's probably my favorite holiday. No gifts. No bother. Just good food with friends and family, plus a 4-day weekend. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Lazy_Perfectionist

It's commonly called "Turkey Day" since Turkey is such a commont theme. It's also the day President Bush pardons a couple of turkeys- and no, we're not talking about Lewis "Scooter" Libby.

Yeah right. You are going to turn them into undead manikins, where they will be forced into an eternatity of servitude.

You want to give the turkeys to Abysia. We are in the middle of the wasteland, and some roast turkey would be nice. With us the turkeys won't feel a thing, unlike turing them into mankins. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

The rulers of Midgard wonder why the giants of Utgard insisted on invading the province we explicitly messaged them we would be moving to this turn. We have not recieved a message of their intentions and untill further notice this can only be interpreted as an act of war.

The giants lost the first battle of this war (obviously) since our skinshifters easily out fight the large brutes. They will suffer more losses to pay for this insolence.

The Rulers of Midgard, under the al-seeing eye of Aezeal, the old old one, princess of plants and trees, lady of precious green, queen of mists. (there seems to be a gender problem there, please adress me as you would a male pretender.) are offended by the lack of apology or even reponse from the side of Utgard in this starting conflict. Therefore we claim to be the maligned party in this and our actions should be considered punishment.

We also wish to state to our direct and not so direct neighbours that this ... restlessness on one of our fronts doesn't have any effect on our diplomatic agreements already made.

Those nations whom we have not had contact with yet are welcome to open a diplomatic conversation by means of this forum and for private ... negotiations, the forum messaging system seems more adequate than the in-game messaging system. For even faster replies the e-mail, used by our host, whom I salute, can be used. My adres is the one starting with LARS...

I welcome all messages from the inhabitants of our world be they chit-chat or serious diplomatic talks.

Greetings of Aezeal, ruler of Midgard, home of skinshifters.

Lies lies lies, Mitgard is a country throwing all his were-creates at the peaceful giants of the north. Mitgard choose an accidental clash of forces as a legal excuse for attacking us. It is all just a cheap move.

His back provinces are defenseless, and we will bind his troops for longer. Support us and you will be rewarded by easy-gained territory.

I fear that there is no backcountry though.. all other province are near my capitol.. which is steadily producing more skinshifters.. I doubt anyone would find it wise to attack there.. certainly when about 3/4 of my army can SAIL!! back there in 2 turns..

Aezeal
December 5th, 2007, 06:51 AM
Well 2 Vp don't make a game.. I have a rush strat since in my first (that is the game before this) I got rushed and didn't want it to happen again.

Someone has got to have the most province anyway .. and it's not like I have that much more than the next person.. not to mention I didn't even grow last turn.

And in armies I'm not even on top.. who knows what the rest has running around?

Let's just see how the game goes before we draw any conclusions.. I'm seeing another nation (patala) getting near 0 province too so I guess that someone else almost has 2 VP too.

December 8th, 2007, 08:10 AM
Hmmm well it seems patala has suffered worse than utgard so far and that is not of my account.. sources tell me Pan and Ulm are the source of their extermination.

IMHO abyssia's exponential research is also more of a worry for mid and end game.

djo
December 8th, 2007, 09:41 AM
Based on our observations, Ulm believes that Patala tried to dance with Turmoil Three, and the lady had her vicious way with him. The capital is naught but a town, and we saw evidence of recent foreign occupation when we arrived. We admit to being opportunistic, but the credit goes mostly to fate.

However, the monkeys make $%&@ strong fortresses. Our troops are spending too much time encamped around their walls. We are not amused.

Aezeal
December 8th, 2007, 08:25 PM
Hmm my next turn might spell the end of a certain giant fortress... depending on how strong their pretender actually is, but I have a fair force camped outside their fortress so I'm pretty confident.. and shapeshifters never die in one turn so that is nice against mages.. the giants themselves must be in huge numbers to stop my army and I don't think they have enough..

we'll see. there remains a sort of army retaking certain provinces.. but that is only a question of cornering them.. if they have badluck with avoiding my chasing armies they'll be gone.

Then I can hunt the remaining indies in my region.

is anybody willing to share whom they are warring with? (I have my sources of course but still for the sake of diplomacy I'm asking anyway)

We can certainly put the game on hold if necessary, but it would be great if players who are going to be away for more than a few days could find a substitute (e.g., DonCorazon in Dec. & Wokeye in Jan.). Obviously, we will not play a turn on Tuesday, Dec. 25.

I find the best way to get a sub is not to advertise in a post on the forum. Instead, it is better to contact one of your fellow gamers directly, assuming you have interacted with them previously in a friendly way. If you need help, let me know.

Games die if they are put on hold for more than a few days.

Pasha

Ironhawk
December 14th, 2007, 08:14 PM
I dont for sure the details of the Mictlan conflict but from observations and hearsay I believe that Man and Mictlan were at war (not sure who started it) and then Arco joined in opportunistically. Arco took the northern portions of Mict territory while Man took the southern parts including the capital. Beseiged in his cap and almost out of dominion, Mict was forced to break seige or be dom-killed. His breakout attempted failed tho, as must be clear by the end of his nation.

DragonFire11
December 15th, 2007, 03:13 AM
That's a fair summary by Ironhawk. I lost a battle to Arco. Then I had to try and regroup at my cap. Before I could regroup, Man started a siege and vitiated my dominion. I tried to break free but the fire arrows sliced me up.

Pasha, please turn me AI. I'm kinda sick of doing my turns on time every time, getting to check my email every day, and not ever hearing that the game is on bloody hiatus.

I appreciate your hosting, and you've always been better at it than almost anyone - but having to get web access to check on a PBEM is screwed up.

Happy horrordays everyone.

December 28th, 2007, 06:55 AM

Aezeal
December 28th, 2007, 07:55 AM
Well I must say this wait is getting a bit too long for me too. Waiting an extra day for someone ok.. but extending it to 5 days KNOWING it will last another x days because of holidays isn't good. Not doing a turn between x-mas and newyear is not good either.. but I guess we are minority... and I dont'have a problem getting net access so I'll just check daily http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

I've been sieging his capital for about thirty turns now, so it hasn't been interesting for him for a long time (I'm guessing). I doubt his going AI now will change things much.

So when is the turn due, Pasha? I'm unsure since we've been off schedule for a while.

As for LP - Shouldnt we advertise for a replacement before setting him AI? I hate it when functional nations are placed AI in a game it makes for unnatural power vacuums.

We've caught a liar peoples

Hello Aezeal:

I received notice that a Midgard diplomat was caught screwing the
daughter of an Atlantian aristocrat.

I have no choice but to give you immediate notice of the termination
of our NAP. The three turns start now (Turn 21).

So, the attacking can commence on turn 24.

Pasha

P.S. I imagine that it will be fun to have a war against you, even if
I lose. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

I agree with Aethyr, that timing looks fine to me - I dont believe Pasha was in the wrong. Both players had three full turns to issue orders to thier men before combat started. When someone tells me that a NAP is terminated, I assume that the current turn counts towards the warning period.

Jomon has recently encountered an influx of scouts, assassins and other miscreants spying on our humble country. The discovery of any such unauthorized vagabonds from unallied nations may be considered an act of war as we Jomonese are very private people. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

Anyone who tries to take the former Mictlan capital will find it guarded by a bunch of defenders. I think you will find it to be quite difficult to break down the gates before my large eastern army arrives.

We are flattered by the recent wave of immigration to Ulm. Clearly our neighbors are discovering what we have known all along, the beauty of the Ulmish mountains, the peaceful green of Ulm's meadows (especially now, in spring, when the wildflowers are blooming), and the charm and kind-heartedness of the Ulmish maidens. However we must insist that you leave your weapons at the border! This is for your own protection. The young men of Ulm are prone (we are sad to say) to heavy drinking on the weekends. Normally the damage is no worse than a few black eyes and broken barstools, but if well-meaning but ignorant immigrants bring weapons into the equation, we fear for the worst (for you, not us--Ulmish youths are likely to get the wrong impression if you show up at a bar fully armed and eyeing aforementioned Ulmish maidens, and they are likely to go home and come back with their cousins and their own weapons, and that would go badly for all).

So, in summary:

-- visitors welcome
-- no weapons
-- and please tip your server 15% on the way out

It is time to institute some discipline in Ulm. We in Jomon are frankly a bit tired of enduring the drunken escapades of Ulmish frat boys straying across the border on their weekend adventures, deflowering our geishas, breaking Asahi bottles over Jomonese heads, and peeing behind the sushi joints!

Aezeal
January 11th, 2008, 07:28 AM
I think you should all set priorities straight and take on man.. they are AT THIS moment conquering their thrid VP.. I know I had a bit of a headstart but I'm not going anywhere with man and atlantis on me.. Atlantis is not that much of a thread but if anyone takes them on I could use more resources to keep man in check.... I'd say that for other players it's better that me and man keep eachother busy for a long while... at this rate though man will have it's 3th (and maybe 4th VP rather quickly... and considering that abyssia is not THAT well defended either and he's about 3 turns away from that caitol afer taking the former utgardian one... well 5 VP can be easily reached in about the time you'd need to react after I've een defeated.. I uss most you dont'kn the situation around utgards former capitol.. but I'll tell you.. you should worry in a gamewhere 5VP mean awin.

So I would ask of you who neighbour atlantis but mostly man... divert some attention of your armies that way.... ifyou have NAP.. cancel it NOW so you can act before ít's too late. Give man MORE pressure!!

Atlantis is allied with man to become a superpower.. oppose them NOW or we will all have to become slaves of man (including atlantis who is obviously getting the worst end of the deal since most of my troop can only fight him while man can take the VP's, but the fishheads don't seem to realize this)

DonCorazon
