Am well into my first game now against the AI and I am sure it will take ages to understand all the nuances which attracted me to this title. I am however, having some snags sorting out what is happening on the battlefied (watching as recommended in the manual) The little dots rush around (rather jerkily - which I think is the turn based system) and eventually some of the dots bugger off the side of the screen. Is there a scripted account of the battle anywhere or is there a way of slowing it down and, more usefully, enlarging it. I don't think so but thought I'd ask as this forum looks a very active, friendly and helpful one.
Looking forward to MP once I know what is happening!!

p.s. can we have a shortsighted Instant Graemlin please?

Page up and down will zoom in and zoom out for you.
One thing that really helped me when watching a battle is to pause it, then right click on each unit of the enemy and checking their stats, and also right clicking on things when a spell or something effected them.
It takes getting used to, but reading the forums also helps you understand too.

It does sound like somethings wrong, though.
It really shouldn't start as little dots. Nor should they rush around jerkily.
There are battle screen shots here and there on the forum. Do yours look like those?

Jerky little dots? You mean single sprites with non animated movement?

If you click on the words, "There was a battle at ((province name))". Then you will see the overall battle results. The only time this doesn't work is when you've captured a castle/fortress... and you'll read the pointless phrase "We've captured the fortress!" This last part is annoying yet has been around for a long long time and something we've realized will never change.
When watching these battles and viewing the overall results... what you see/read is 99.8% accurate, but every once in a blue moon what you find on the map will be different.

Page up and page down and also the cursor keys allow you to move the camera in all three dimensions. You can get very close.

Many thanks indeed everyone. I suppose I was being a little fascetious calling them dots but my eyesight is not good unfortunately and I find the sprites a bit too small - I don't know who is an archer or a swordsman etc. I have to keep right clicking. Page up and down helps a little bit but zoom in and zoom out would be a godsend.
Thanks again. I will just have to try and get used to it.

Zoom in and out with the cursor keys. Up moves you closer.

That's not really zooming in and out, its just moving backwards and forwards. It just so happens that moving down + moving forwards is equivalent to zooming in when you are looking down on something.

Well yeah, it's equivalent. It would solve his problem.

Yeah, I'm just pointing out that the up/down keys don't really zoom in an out because it could be a bit confusing.
I remember when I read that they zoom in and out and was completely confused because I would just roll "over" my troops instead of closer to them when I pressed the up key, it was the revelation that page up/page down move up and down that allowed me to zoom (thanks to combining up with page down)

Yeah, fair enough. I also didn't know about PgUp/PgDn for ages. Once you get the knack of combining those with the cursor keys it works very nicely I think.

"jerky little dots" suggest to me that maybe his resolution is really low?

I have a suggestion.
