-- 6-8 players, early era
-- claim nations in this thread, then PM me your email address

We will start a few days after the game is full.

You're welcome to make use of the LlamaServer if you like. You can keep full control over it like you would a normal PBEM game, but the server will do the labour of downloading and uploading attachments and hosting for you. Let me know if that would be helpful.

llamabeast: Thanks for the offer. I will PM you if I want to take you up on it.
I am a big fan of predictable hosting times, but I am not sure a 56 hr fixed hosting interval would be a good way of doing 3 turns/week.
llamabeast
December 2nd, 2007, 03:42 PM
Well what I would do is set it to 48 hour hosting intervals (with quickhost off), and every third turn postpone hosting by 24 hours. Then you can tell people exactly when hostings will be (e.g. Sunday, Wednesday and Friday nights at 9pm GMT) and it would only take about 10 seconds a week to maintain the schedule.

Extremely new...game not yet 2 weeks old!
Would like to play Arcocephale if the last slot is still not taken.
djo
December 2nd, 2007, 06:43 PM
Ok, we are full. Since we have many new players, we will not use any mods at all. New players, be sure you are patched to 3.10. Start designing your pretenders, and we'll aim to start the game...let's say by Wednesday evening.
I will make a final decision by tomorrow evening regarding whether to use the LlamaServer or not. The hosting schedule will be the same, the only difference will be which email address you will use. Either way, please send me a personal message via the forum with your email address (click on my username, then there will be a link you can use to send the PM).
For new players: create your pretender using the option under the "game tools" menu. Be sure you do not have any mods enabled when you do. I'll send out the final email destination when I have everyone's email.

Monday update:
I am waiting for email addresses from:
RonD
Torin
When I have them, I will mass email everyone with my email address. I will be running this game myself, so my address will be where to send pretender and turns.
We're still aiming for a Wednesday evening start.

djo's friend is officially registered.
Hi guys! I'm pretty new at this game (never played against anyone other than djo and/or the computer). If the more experience players have some tips for the newbs (especially if you catch us messing up badly in the game) I'm sure we'd all appreciate it. I'd also like to avoid a game of 'Who can build the biggest alliance'(TM).
Oh, if there are typical rules of etiquette in a multiplayer game Dominions it would be good to know about those as well.
djo
December 4th, 2007, 06:58 PM
I am awaiting pretenders from:
Tir na Nog
Ermor
Tien Chi
(apostrophes not included)
If you're having trouble finding your pretender file, email me or post here.
As for etiquette...there used to be a thread with some good suggestions, but I can't find it again. Basically, be nice, play each game for itself (no cross-game grudges/trades/alliances), and be considerate on the forums and in playing (get turns in, find a sub if you have to drop, etc.). Did I miss anything?
djo
December 4th, 2007, 11:26 PM
Since there were no comments regarding victory conditions, I'll stick with the original plan: 16 total VPs, one in each capital, eight others outside the capitals. You will need 8 to win (50%).
djo
December 5th, 2007, 08:37 PM
We are underway! Turn 1 has been emailed. Let me know as soon as possible if you do not receive it, or if there are any problems. Check your spam folders if you don't receive a turn! They may grab one until they are trained not to.
I decided on 7 VP needed to win instead of 8; there's enough water that often one or two VP will be mostly inaccessible.
If this is your first email game ever:
-- in your savedgames folder, create a folder for the game (probably named "solstice")
-- each turn, put your turn file (eg, early_formoria.trm) in that folder
-- play your turn
-- email me your orders file (eg, early_fomoria.2h) (2h = "to host")
-- I would like to host the turns at 9pm EST (GMT-5); email me if you want an extension, or post here
I will try to post here when I email turns. For the first 15 turns, though, I will not send our reminder emails. I probably will when we move to 3 turns/week.
Parting hint for all the new players: send scouts everywhere. With graphs off, it's the only way of knowing who's doing well, and who's sitting on all the victory points.
Good luck!

RonD
December 6th, 2007, 01:19 AM
You should be able to play whatever nation has a .trn file in the folder "Solstice". If you go look in that folder, what exactly is there?

djo
December 6th, 2007, 08:18 AM
You do see "Solstice" as a game, though? That would mean the folder is in the right place.
I resent the turn, in case of corruption.
BTW, otthegreat told me in email that he's running Vista. Anyone know if there are permissions problems?
Torin
December 6th, 2007, 12:10 PM
otthegreat, post in the main forum so people that had this problem before can help you.
djo
December 6th, 2007, 06:45 PM
OK, after thinking about it, here are some troubleshooting steps/questions:
-- after creating your "solstice" folder, does it appear as a game choice in the game?
-- try creating a new game vs. the AI; does its folder appear in the same place as your solstice game?
-- if so, do the .trn and .2h files in the new game folder "look the same" as the .trn file I sent you in the solstice folder? (no, I don't know what I mean by "looks the same")
-- if you delete everything in the new game folder, and put the solstice turn in there, does it show up in the game?
Try these things, and let me know.
We will delay hosting until we get otthegreat's turns straightened out.

Thank you all for the help. The first email must have been corrupted because the resent turn worked.

So far I've seen seven Prophets, including my own. Also at least two Pretenders on the board.
Which leads me to ask...how long does a VP game usually last? Noticeably shorter than a "kill'em all" game? Newbie with inquiring mind now worries that he should not have 'Imprisoned' his Pretender...
RonD
December 8th, 2007, 09:03 PM
The main danger with an imprisoned pretender in this particular game is not so much the VPs, but the crowded map. I expect that everyone will bump into a neighbor or 2 very soon. Whether your strategy is good or risky depends on what you did with the points. If you are cranking out ultra-blessed super troops, you'll be fine.
djo
December 8th, 2007, 09:24 PM
Prophets are popular because they are useful for everyone. If you are playing a bless strategy, you want them for "Divine Blessing" (since every prophet is at least H3, they can all cast it).
Even if you aren't playing bless, all prophets can Smite. Plus, all prophets spread dominions, which is useful if your pretender is asleep or on holiday.
I don't know how many non-VP games truly go to the bitter end. My sense from reading these forums is that by the time one player has about half the world, the others often concede. That's why you often see VP games with victory set around 50% (like this one). Pasha sets it even lower for some of his games.
So VP games with conditions like this will go for a while. For this game: the map is a bit more crowded than average, plus we have some new players. I would guess it will go briskly, but I bet we get 50-60 turns out of it anyway (do the other experienced player agree?).
Now, if you use cumulative VP conditions, it puts a real ticking clock on the game. Not too many people have run those games here.

Turn 5 has been emailed. Orders due Monday, 9pm.
In general, I will not host as early as I did today, even if I have all the turns. I figure this early in the game, though, there was little chance of anyone wanting to change orders at the last minute.

Sheesh. How crowded can one little isthmus be? I can see me, Ermor, Abysia, Fomoria, and now TC is knocking practically right on my door. I'm afraid this game has a really bad case of unequal start positions. *Someone* must have a bunch of room to expand - and they are the odds-on favorite to win the game. Kind of sad to know this already by turn 8.

Arco's turn has been resent.
everz requested a delay Friday evening from 9pm to 11pm. As I am an early morning person, I may not run the turn before Saturday morning.

Interesting. The original turn showed up at 3:48a...I'll blame my ISP. They are HIGHLY blameable. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
Turn 9 played and the .2h sent back.
A delay for the next turn is fine, but I know that the Arco turn will be in before 10p Sat night!
Now, is there any way to guarantee a GOOD event? So far I've been slammed by bad luck...and no luck scales, good or bad, are present in my provinces.
djo
December 14th, 2007, 09:04 PM
Having taken a close look at the map, and integrated what people have reported here with my own observations...holy cow, that is an uneven distribution of territory! Ulm and Mictlan must feel like the Americas before the Europeans over there.
Contrariwise, this is a victory point game, and there are more VPs where there are more nations. So you can think of that as an advantage, if you like.
Fortunately, there is a simple answer to the crowding issue, which is to exterminate your neighbors. I encourage everyone to get on with it!

With my luck Ulm and Mictlan will have a short war of extermination and I'll be staring at a post WWII U.S.A. I, on the other hand, plan to win this game by buying victory points from the other nations with pretty gems and lots of love slaves.

Turn 10 has gone out.
Official deadline for next turn: 9pm Sunday
Unofficial deadline: if all turns are in by Saturday evening, I will host on the original schedule. No pressure, though. Due to general crowding of the map, I understand if you want the full 24 hrs for your turn.
Future schedule: we will be in 3 turn/week mode by the holidays (Tues/Thurs/Sun). Please post here regarding how much we need to slow down or pause.

It has just been pointed out to me by one of the players that Fomoria actually has 2 VP in its capital. I honestly did not even notice it--the graphics on the map are pretty close together, and I didn't think it was even possibly under these victory settings. If I had noticed on turn one, I would have offered to restart the game.
Can't do that now, though, and I hope no one feels cheated. All I can do is make sure everyone knows it, so people know that Fomoria is twice as valuable a target now.
I invite further comments on the issue if it bothers anyone.

We are about to move to the 3 turns/week schedule, which will be Tues/Thurs/Sunday. Unless there are objections, I will run 15 on Wed, then 16 immediately on Thursday, then the next one on Sunday the 23rd.
For the holidays: no turn on Tuesday the 25th. Does anybody object to picking up again on Thursday the 27th? Or shall we pause a little longer?
Let me know your preferences. I wouldn't mind a pause, as I'll be visiting and only have access to email via website via dial-up, which makes mass email a bit of a pain.

Tues. Jan 1
Tues/Thurs/Sun thereafter

I'm setting Tir na n'Og AI this turn. I tried to break out of my crap starting position by attacking Formoria while he attacked Ermor's capital. I figured I might get lucky and they would bloody each other enough (or I could get *really* lucky and Ermor would win, I was 100% certain my thunderstriking mamas could beat Ermor). But I couldn't thunderstrike enough to take down the blessed giants. A super-crowded space like mine was no place to be without a big bless, and I don't see Tir as playing well with a bless strategy.
On top of the crowding, I had all kinds of bad luck. Some (barbarian attacks, armies of trolls, burned lab) due to my Order 3 Misfortune 2 build. Others, though, were just plain bad luck. Like the horde of cataphracts in a province adjacent to my capital. Or the lizardman shaman with a soul contract 2 steps away. (By the time I dealt with him, he had 17 devils. I only got him by using a Bean Sidhe as a lightning-bolt throwing assassin).
Good luck to y'all, and a huge thanks to djo for hosting the game.

GG everyone. I dont want to se anymore flying fat bold giants.
Now my lands will be distributed between the three of you. But Tienchi has my capitol.

Who's got flying fat giants?? Fomorian giants are all lean and athletic.
And the real question on everyone's mind: is Arco-Abysia-Tien Chi the new axis of evil? Just curious...

Hi everyone. I will be gone from the 31st to the 6th and probably will not be able to run my turns. I'm still looking into a sub or something, but right now it doesn't look promising. Would people object to pausing after the 31st and restarting on the 7th?
djo
January 28th, 2008, 08:12 PM
That would only be a 2-turn pause. OK with me. There's enough conflict going on that it would be hard for a sub to take over.
By the way, Mictlan is now AI. I didn't notice yesterday, and I even sent Torin an email with no turn attached.

2-turn pause? No problem.
djo
January 29th, 2008, 09:45 PM
OK, everyone seems happy with the pause. It'll give us time to plan and conspire.
So we then will have:
-- turn due tonight as usual (play with 3.10, then upgrade)
-- (possibly as late as tomorrow AM, at Pasha's request for a slight delay)
-- turn due Thursday Jan. 31 (with 3.14 from then on)
-- skip Sunday/Tuesday, next one due Thursday Feb. 7

I've just mailed out turn 36.
Since we were a little late, we will do this: if everyone gets their turn in by 9pm Tuesday, I'll host as usual. But you should not feel any pressure. If anyone is late, I'll postpone until Thursday.
I know this seems wasteful of time for a small delay in Sunday's hosting, but I very much want to keep a steady, predictable schedule, and always give players a full 48 hrs to play their turns.

Fine with me. We have been keeping up a good pace. We are hereby paused until Thursday.
Anyone changing their mind about their orders may send me a new turn at any time. I will always used the most recently received orders. I will not host before 8pm-ish on hosting days, so don't wait until the very last minute.

*** Patch time! ***
Steps to take:
-- play your current turn (now due Friday) using the old version (3.14)
-- watch forums to be sure there isn't a game-breaking bug in 3.15 (rare but possible)
-- patch (keeping multiple versions as necessary for your games)
-- the turn due Sunday should be played with 3.15, barring aforementioned rare possibility of a bad bug in 3.15
djo
March 7th, 2008, 10:06 PM
Turn 43 is out. I hosted it with the 3.15 patch, so you should play your turns with the patch from now on.
Since we still have two days, the next turn will be due Sunday at 9 pm as usual. Do we have anyone international left in our game? The US goes on daylight savings time this weekend, so Sunday at 9 pm will be one hour earlier than previous weeks relative to your local time.

I have two questions:
1. What mod are we using?
2. A commander equiped with "pills of water breathing" has stayed in an underwater province for several turns. Now he throw away the "pills of water breathing" and move toward a land-province. Next turn should he safely reach the target land province or drown in water?
djo

1. We aren't using any mods.
2. I don't know, but I see you've got answers in the main forum.

I'm extremely sorry to post the following:
I decide to leave this forum and drop this game. Due to a recent issue in another MP game. I lost all my interests of dom3...
Sorry to Nova, Stormcrow. We have gotten this far, but I'm not able to see the end. Thanks for hosting, djo. Very nice designed hosting scheme.
I'm trying to find a sub. Please allow me one extra day.
Nova

I'm sorry to hear this, but let me wish you better times in your other pursuits!
djo
March 27th, 2008, 07:20 PM
Thank you for giving us notice instead of disappearing. We will go into semi-indefinite pause to allow for some time in finding a sub. In any case, Arco also warned of the possibility of another late turn. So we'll aim for Friday, but if a sub isn't found right away, we'll wait a bit and at least discuss here (or in email) what to do. (That is, we are definitely paused until Friday, and possibly longer.)
I can't take credit for the hosting scheme--that's Pasha's invention. I find the pace perfectly suits me, so I stole it. I don't think there are enough slower games.

I'm going to hold us in pause mode until the TC power transfer is over, and, let's be frank, to give time for the other three players to discuss how they are going to beat up Fomoria.
DryaUnda, it would be helpful if you would PM me your email address.
djo
March 30th, 2008, 06:54 PM
OK, we're nearly set. But Abysia would like more time to confer with the new TC, so I'm going to keep us paused until Tuesday.
Remember, if you've already sent me a turn and want to change your orders, just send me another one. I'll always use the most recent orders. I nominally host at 9pm eastern time, but I reserve the right to host anytime after 8pm. I will not host if I don't have turns from everyone, and I will not host before 8pm in any case.
