What map are you going to play at?
I sign up as Lanka.
Another question: will hosting become more rare at late stages of the game?
Argitoth
January 9th, 2008, 10:49 AM
Map will be large random. Host will only pause on request. Other than that there will be a strict 24 hour period. The max time I will pause the game is 3 24 hour periods.

I haven't played in a non-Llamaserver game yet, so tell me if this is right: I connected to your server and apparently added my god for Mictlan. The text next to Mictlan changed from "open" to "human controlled" or whatever. Am I done until the game starts?

One more question to host: will I be able to retrieve .trn files to local computer or they are stored at server indefinitely?
Just to clear the game procedure...

Best way to work it:
1. Connect to server. You get told what nation you have on your drive for that game.
2. Confirm nation. You are asked for password.
3. Type password. See 'Receiving turn file' message. End up at screen showing all nations, with info about deadline.
4. GET OUT. Do NOT enter map.
5. Once safely disconnected from server, choose 'Play an Existing Game'. Type your password, take your turn, revise it as many times you wish. At this point, server does not know about this.
6. Once you like your turn, connect to server again, type password, see "Uploading turn", you're done.
7. You can still connect and revise your turn, until server hosts.
By the way, each new turn overwrites old turn. If you want record of all your game, you have to save .trn and .2h files before uploading on server.
(I know my English sucks, but I'm too old to bother or let it bother me)
Argitoth

Oh, now I know what was asked.
Yeah, all you do is login to download. You CAN ENTER THE MAP! Nikolai. You just don't want to press "E" you want to press "options --> quit without saving" or whatever.

Hmm, I seem to have the Worthy Heroes mod loaded for another game I am playing. Does this affect this game? Should I unload it or something? It's odd that the mod's activation status seems to be associated with my Dominions installation, rather than with any particular game.
So many questions new players have!

I think it is a pretty simple mod and it should pose no danger except possibly when I am actually taking my turns. I think it very likely that my pretender is fine, but I thought I'd make sure by asking. But... do I have to manually deactivate the mod before I take a turn, and then reactivate it before I take a turn in the other game? That would be lame! Does anybody know about this?
thejeff
January 10th, 2008, 12:05 PM
When you choose a mod it is active for game or pretender creation. After a game has been created, it will always try to load the mods it was started with.
So, no. There's no need to turn mods on and off when taking turns. As long as you have them installed everything will work fine.
The only potential problem is if you have a mod turned when you create your pretender that actually changes the pretender you make. It's safest to have all the game's mods, and no others, on when making a pretender.

Why is it a bad idea to simply do your turn on the server?
Sivoc
January 11th, 2008, 07:12 AM
I can't find any reason why it should be a bad idea.
But it is always nice to have a trn file of a particular battle or maybe an enemy SC.
Ironhawk
January 11th, 2008, 07:28 AM
Its not bad to do it on the server but there is a slight element of risk. The problem occurs when you are the last player out (or near last) - if you accidentally hit end turn, your turn will automatically be submitted. If you just happen to be the last player there is no way to correct this. You are screwed. Even if you are near last, others can complete before you do and you may become last and not know it.
Generally, what people will do is connect to the server to get their turn then immediately disconnect. Play the turn offline (where you can end turn all you like, accidentally or not) and then connect to the server once the turn is complete.
P.S.
Sivoc, you need a less annoying avatar pic

One more thing. I wonder what is master password in such a game for?
llamabeast
January 11th, 2008, 09:54 AM
The master password works in place of any of the players' passwords. It's useful if a player disappears, so they can be set to AI without knowing their password.

Nikolai, to deal with your elephant infestation, you have to use your brain a little more.
-Armor doesn't help much against elephants. Recruit a large army of cheap units.
-Elephants have low armor. They are easily killed by lots of small units.
-Independent armies with elephants should have a small force. If you have fast-moving units, recruit them, put them at the front left and set to attack rearmost. Units don't even have to be fast sometimes.
-Archers should be set to fire at archers.

Heavy cavalry appears to be the bane of the great Arcoscephaleian armies...Unfortunatly we have not quite mastered the fine art of disconnecting horse from chariot to form our own cavalry force. 3 chariots were burned (as well as the attached horses) as a result of my overwhelming rage.
Argitoth
January 16th, 2008, 04:53 PM
Just something to keep in mind, the 36 hour hosting is not meant to give you 36 hours to take a turn. The reason it's 36 and not 48 is because if you take a turn at 5pm and think "oh, I have 24 hours to take a turn, I'll take it again at 5pm" guess what happenes? You've missed your turn because 5pm to 5pm is 24 hours. If I set hosting to 36 hours that means you have till 5am to take your turn again. That 12 hour window is so that you don't have to wake up in the middle of the night to take a turn.
Argitoth
January 16th, 2008, 07:56 PM
I'm turning off the timer permanently. There's so many complications with having a timer. Say I restart my computer and there's 5 hours left to hosting. That means I have to set it to host in 5 hours and then wake up on time to set it to host in 36 hours, or it will host again in 5 hours.
I could, however, set the timer at certain times of day, but then guess what happenes? If quickhost is on and someone takes a turn at midnight and I set the timer to host at 1am, then it will host twice in one hour.
From now on, only quickhost will be on and I'll keep track of hosting times some other way.

What do you have to say against Lanka? Actually the phrase "Jotunheim is taking a beating" is highly incorrect. If you know the situation, you should not say so, because monkeys' losses are MUCH MORE significant. And from this game I've learned well that Niefel is too much unbalanced race. However, we won't argue.
Argitoth
January 27th, 2008, 11:34 PM
Ano, don't complain about balance. Take it as a challenge, because it's impossible to balance any game well enough. A lot about Dominions is luck and unseen strategies and advantages. A lot of the balance comes from things you might not be noticing or taking advantage of. It's 2v1 right now, Lanka vs Jotunheim vs Mictlan. You can't complain about balance. Maybe you should have formed an alliance before attacking someone. Dominions is more than a number game if you know what I mean. Use your head, see the weaknesses in enemies.
Personally, I think Jotunheim is not unbalanced at all. Just because you lose in one battle doesn't mean all of a sudden Jotunheim is unbalanced.

I was under impression that in this forum, casting battlefield enchantment and retreating mage to leave enchantment working and unstoppable is considered abusing a bug.
Thread's first post was edited, and I do not remember whether this rule was stated. I had it used against me, so, do we allow it? I will be upfront, if we allow it, I will use ANY bug I know of. Including mists of deception + wrathful sky, which is unbeatable, and forging without gems. I would like game stopped until I get answer, but it is up to host.

ano
February 7th, 2008, 04:36 AM
Please refer to the bug shortlist. I don't know what is forging without gems or something like that but when I call something a bug I refer to the link above. If the issue is in this list (or int the list in the bug discussion thread) then I consider it a bug. "Mists of deception - wrathful skies" bug you speak of is present there but just casting and retreating is not because it is not a bug, but WAD and I've read several discussions about this all of them saying the same. Battlefield enchantment ends _ONLY_ if the casting mage dies. If he retreats or teleports home, it stays in power until all the friendly units are dead. It is expected behavior, no matter you like it or not. And the bug with mists of deceptions _IS_ a bug, because that spell continues summoning units while another battlefield enchantment stays in power and these 2 enchantments support each other to an end and nothing can be done.
As for forging without gems it would be more honest of you not to threaten others with using it but to write about it to the corresponding thread..
Update: Hm, I recently found the issue in the shortlist. You are right and I am not. Really, I never thought it is considered a bug and didn't notice it before.
ano
February 7th, 2008, 04:52 AM
I admit I was mistaken and won't do it again. ...However, in this case i could just cast protection on the casting (expendable) mage and defend him with some units.

Ano admits he made a mistake and we should be able to continue without issue from here out. However I think that it should be taken off of the timed hosting until nikolai takes his turn since he was waiting for this issue to be resolved and it would be pretty rough for him if he ends up with a staled turn because of it.

My heavy cavalry went through where your mage was two turns later. Instead of enchantment ended with her death, I take 11 more turns of mopping up crap, and instead of clean massacre, it was almost a tie.
Lets not forget that if it had worked, I would have lost ALL my army, pretender, prophet, etc... It was game ending (for me) fight, and you used shortlisted bug. I am new here, and I knew about. Since I have been here, there have been two long discussions about this.
> I have extremely little patience to people that would threaten the game that i play like he did...
Glad to see you have big patience for people who use bugs in crucial battle. Well, this last turn went fine for me and Tir na Nog - no losses, busted temple, killed a lot of troops... But I am switching to AI. Caught red handed, he appologize, and I am [censored] for thinking that once abuse is forgiven, all abuse goes. I will not ruin your game. Have fun.
By the way, on gems hack - it modifies client, it allows orders that server does not check, and if you have no gems to cover some actions, it will execute anyway. Yes, it is Russian. No, I am not.

February 7th, 2008, 03:26 PM
Nikolai, just think about simple thing: if I wasn't going to retreat with my mage, could I leave her unprotected at the bottom edge of battlefield at the side where (as I supposed) you cavalry was positioned? If I wasn't going to retreat, I would leave her in a group of sacreds, warded to stay alive long enough. But I definitely don't want to speak about _what could have been_ etc. I always used "cast and retreat" tactic and never thought it is considered a bug (I described my reasons and comparison with "mists of deception and wrathful skies" exploit above). I am sorry for that mistake, but believe me, it changed nothing in the battle result.
I will not calm you any more, because I already said all I could and had to say.

Well, I have a new problem. I cannot connect to the server on the mac nor can I connect the mac to its own server.
However, I am able to connect to the mac server with LAN IP, but not WAN IP. The ports are forwarded. However, if I try to forward the ports (going to 192.168.1.1 in the web browser) and check those checkboxes (to enable the ports) I save settings and the checkmarks are never there. However, the checkmarks remain if I go there on the PC.
Is it because MAC just doesn't show checkmarks? Nevertheless, the port forwarding doesn't seem to work on the mac.
If I go to whatismyip.com it shows 70.176.220.23 for both the mac and the pc. Is that normal? Mac is using the same port of 4334. Its lan IP is different, .103 instead .100.

The bloodthirsty demonic inhabitants of Lanka have declared war on Arcoscephale! With their forge of the ancients their massive gem income, and their massive landmass it can be determined that Lanka is the most powerful force in the game. The free nations of the world must unite to throw back these demonic abominations! If Lanka is to inherit my land it will surely become unstoppable.
Now, those of you who do not border Lanka and are not taking up arms must be asking yourselves "Oh no, we can't reach Lanka, there is nothing we can do to stop our inevitable demise!" Well my friends, you'd be mistaken. Not only can you hammer Lanka with ritual spells (I can even suggest suitable targets) you can quietly help fund my war effort with donations of gems and gold.
Of course there are probably a few cynics out there who may ask "How do we even know Lanka has the upper hand?" Well the truth is that I don't even know if Lanka has the upper hand...time will tell. But can you really afford to take that chance? Can your...children?
The Lankan armies should be aware that they will find few virgin slaves in Arcoscephale. We Arcoscephalian's are a lustly lot. All demons who enter my land will be promptly banished and all monkeys will be herded up and shipped to Ermor to take part in gladiatorial monkey knife fights.
ano
March 14th, 2008, 09:00 AM
We declared this war just because sitting at home is rather dull and boring. Our monkey people are really tired of that, 'cause they think it's worth visiting other lands even though they are inhospitable. Only a few of them can sneak, so I had no choice other then to agree.

In the mean time, C'tis will fight R'lyeh and Atlantis. C'tis great mages just killed Atlantis' supercombatant pretender. Victory is sweet. Now Atlantis knows he can't send super combatants to take my lands.
Hmmm... oh yes. Argitoth, the Saurolich is back from the dead, recalled by his priests. He shall wreak havoc upon his enemies.

Very impressive SC's and very nice use of them Ano. Far better preparation and utilization of your troops than myself. My favorite part was when my king of elemental fire ran into the SC with 150 fire resistance (Mind you he was not quite properly outfitted for fighting) http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif Whoever ends up fighting Lanka after me should be prepared...and have some friends because I doubt anyone can take him 1 on 1...and I'm not just saying that because I couldn't http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif.
My God is dead (for the second time this game...damn Niefelheim) and my country falls apart around me; but I still have some bite left in me.

I wish I had placed my golems better http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif If they had been at the gate with storm of thorns slowing your advance to a crawl I probably would have held the province and not lost a dozen commanders as they tried to flee into enemy territory. Antimagic worked well for you though, it's disappointing seeing falling frost hit a group of bunched up units for next to nothing. (at least that's why I assume that spell was so ineffective for me)
Shame for you about that mass flight though...if all of your units were flying you would have torn me up... the only reason I held was because I was able to stop you at the gate for so long.
Any idea why my castle did not fire on you?
---edit, that was a pretty cool fight by the way.
ano
March 26th, 2008, 08:04 PM
Frankly speaking, I can't call this fight a good one. I really, really dislike losing fights due to unexpected bugs. It is very frustrating...
I didn't take my thunderstriking/storming bane lord into this fight planning that you won't expect there will be no storm. And you didn't expect that. I planned rather small loses and what I received in return?;) Btw, it seems that I lost the only commander in this fight - a Dakini who was supposed to fly together with the others but became a lone victim of a friendly Bane Fire instead))
As for the falling frost - it didn't work well due to luck and high protection of my sacreds (it does 17 nomral damage while Kala-Mukhas had 18 protection and luck, MR has no effect on it).
Don't know about no arrows from the castle. Maybe, another bug. I can't find any explanation.
Janlm
March 27th, 2008, 02:57 AM
if spells dosn't fire as you have predicted, there usually is some kind of reason, other than a bug, perhaps it was made impossible for the caster to do it somehow.

At this point everyone should be making their "last stand" against you. Unless the world bands together against you, if you continue to be able to pick off foes one at a time, the world is yours.

Rain wouldn't have helped because it just increases fatigue from using fire magic and there's no way to gain more fatigue than 200. Anyway, you're welcome.

Nation of Lanka now controls more than a half of the living world, and if any of remaining nations (Agartha, Ermor, R'lyeh, C'tis, Tir'nan'og) still do not agree that there's no true god other than Bu, the Oracle, I would like to ask to increase the hosting time to 3 days permanently. I need 5 hours or even more for planning each turn and I simply can't afford spending that much time here on weekdays.
