View Full Version : Manatee - EA newbie game (started)
llamabeast
January 17th, 2008, 09:19 PM
I just realised I haven't started a newbie game for _ages_, so here's one now. I'm calling it Manatee, following my theme of naming my games after South American mammals.
The game will be early era. There'll be roughly 15 provinces per player and as many players as sign up. All settings default, and no mods.
The game'll be run on my automated PBEM server (www.llamaserver.net , and see the FAQ linked in my signature). It's very easy to use.
The game'll be on a 24 hour timer, and later move to a 48 hour timer when players request it.
The player list is:
Marverni - hEad
Tir Na n'Og - thepodger
Pangaea - Omnirizon
C'tis - Elswamio
Oceania - Loren
Agartha - Cerlin
Ermor - eidahl
Lanka - Randvek
Kailasa - yandav
Arcoscephale - carlosib
Abysia - Aapeli
T'ien Ch'i - Thrawn
R'lyeh - Zoshan
Niefelheim - Falkor
? - Molotov98
Sauromatia - Slobby
Ulm - ThatGuyBob
To submit your pretenders:
- Make sure you have the same mods enabled as the game you're playing in (Preferences->Mod Preferences) although only mods affecting pretender design, such as Conceptual Balance, actually matter
- Go to Game Tools -> Create a pretender god in Dominions. Don't set a password, since for PBEM games they're not helpful and occasionally annoying (e.g. if you need a sub)
- Go to the savedgames/newlords folder in the dominions directory, and find your pretender file (e.g. mid_pythium_0.2h)
- E-mail the file to: pretenders[ at ]llamaserver[ dot ]net
- Crucially, you must have the game name 'Manatee' in the subject line of your e-mail

I don't know if I qualify as a newbie anymore; I've only been in one game where I've lasted past midgame, but I am/have been in 6 other games total. I have never played a blood nation MP though, and I would like to give Mictlan a try.
I'll let llamabeast and/or the other players decide, with no hard feelings if I'm not considered newbie enough. ; )
If we get 10 land + 2 water nations, we could use my Cradle starting positions (without the No Independents part, of cousre)...

Marverni please!
Could we have renaming on as well?
llamabeast
January 17th, 2008, 09:54 PM
Hey Indy - yep, you can play, but I think chooser a weaker race than Mictlan might be an idea - they always seem pretty strong.
hEad - yep we'll have renaming on. I forgot that that wasn't default.

I'd be glad to join. I'm definitely not new to Dominions, but I've never done any MP.
Sign me up for Tir Na N'og. I just started playing them in SP and they're a ton of fun.
Seconding Worthy Heroes if it's not too late...

IndyPendant
January 18th, 2008, 03:52 AM
Hmm...I'm looking at other nations right now, but the only other one I like to play is Caelum. *glares at eidahl*
--Kidding about the glaring. I do like EA Caelum despite its many many weaknesses, but I've played them enough times now that I don't consider myself a newbie with them anymore.
llamabeast, if I limited myself to a single 9-point bless + whatever, do you think that would still be too powerful? --Honest question. ; ) I'll go back to looking, anyways, see if anything else catches my eye.
Edit: Oh, and Omnirizon, standard for these games is a 24-hour quickhost, which means one turn a day usually. If everyone gets their turns in early, you can sometimes end up doing, say, 4 turns in 3 days or something like that. Around Turn 20, it often changes to 1 turn every 2 days.
eidahl
January 18th, 2008, 04:02 AM
IndyPendant: You can have Caelum in that case. I kindof wanted to try another one anyway.
EDIT: Actually, hopefully I end up something near you and observe your way of playing Caelum. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/evil.gif
I'll just edit the post I made before when I decide the race...

llamabeast
January 18th, 2008, 10:15 PM
Molotov98 - choose a nation from all those that are left. It's probably better to do that that just get whatever you're stuck with, since the game's more fun if you are a nation you find exciting.

I think actually I shall withdraw from this game. I don't really like many many players in the games I play, I've found; around 12 is my limit. Maybe I'll set up another game, and play Mictlan in that one... ; )
eidahl, thank you for being willing to give up Caelum for me; if you want it back, take it.
Note just to be clear for everyone, Mictlan is still up for grabs in this game.
And I hope everyone has fun!

January 20th, 2008, 08:35 PM
Okay then, I think we probably have enough players, so I will set the game up to accept pretenders. I'll add instructions for uploading your pretender to the first post. Try to get them in in the next couple of days. I'll start the game late Wednesday night at the latest, and aim for Tuesday night.
Elswamio
January 21st, 2008, 02:28 AM
pretender sent. What time is the daily deadline going to be?
llamabeast
January 21st, 2008, 07:25 AM
Oh, whoops! Actually when I posted that I had forgotten to actually create the game. Presumably anyone who's sent a pretender in should have got an error message. Please could you send them in again?
Elswamio - The game will be on 24-hour quickhost. What that means is that it'll host when everyone's turns are in, or 24 hours after the last hosting, whichever is sooner. What that means (and this takes a little thinking about) is that you will always have >= 24 hours to do your turn after doing your last one, and each turn will always host <= 24 hours after the previous one.
In practice the hosting time tends to gradually advance around the clock, but you can always take your own turn at whatever time of day suits you best.
I would like to try to keep to the 24 hour schedule for at least the first 30 turns or so, although if several people request a change we'll change to 48 hours sooner. But it is nice to have the first 30-odd turns quickly, since they don't take that long to play.

I've already sent my pretender for kailasa but I want to change something in my pretender's design. Is it possible? Do I only have to send a new one? Sorry for my mistake http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/redface.gif

I hope so. We're still missing Tir na n'Og and whatever Molotov98 was going to be - hopefully they'll turn up in the next few hours. If they don't I may well start it tonight anyway, depending on whether I have time. Hopefully I will.

llamabeast

I think I will go with "Glory of the Gods (Multiplayer)". Sorry, should have decided on that ages ago.
The two missing players haven't even received the PMs I sent, so I think I'll just go ahead and start the game now...
thepodger and Molotov98 - apologies. Send me a PM and I'll make sure to save you a space in the next game.
llamabeast
January 23rd, 2008, 08:53 PM
Okay, the game is started! Hopefully you'll all have got your first turns. See my FAQ if you're not quite sure what to do.
The first turn has a 48 hour timer in case of problems, and then we'll be on a 24 hour timer.
Enjoy the game!

January 23rd, 2008, 08:59 PM
I just noticed that I have currently one province. Was that a mistake or... ?
"There'll be roughly 15 provinces per player -" from your first post.
(Not that I mind, since one province per player might make it more interesting. )
llamabeast
January 23rd, 2008, 09:07 PM
Oh! Sorry, it hadn't occurred to me that it could be read like that. I meant that the total number of provinces in the game would be about 15 * the number of players (it's slightly higher in the end). So that if everyone expanded equally you would end up with 15 provinces.
eidahl
January 23rd, 2008, 09:16 PM

Ah, it's a pity I'm not a newbie.
Realize, all of you, the high standards to which the name of this game requires you to adhere:
When I come up from round the Horn
I find a gal what makes me beam
She'd hold me in her supple flippers
Darlin' lady of my dreams!
Oh Manatee, sweet manatee
Your moustache bristles tickle me
In places no one ever sees
My soft and lovin' manatee!
I found her bobbin' in the surf
Her briny smile enchanted me
We hauled her up and gave her lovin'
A buoyant lass you would agree!
Oh Manatee, sweet manatee
My buxom bovine from the sea
Won't you come and marry me
My warm and flaccid manatee!
tgbob
January 23rd, 2008, 11:23 PM
Alright, I'll admit it. I don't like manatees. They're the retarded cows of the sea.

excuse my ignorance, i've never played MP before. but so what are the little crowns on some of the provinces?
llamabeast
January 24th, 2008, 07:59 AM
Oh whoops. I have to admit I got confused and thought a manatee was a monkey.
The crowns on some of the provinces are "victory points", although since we're not playing for victory points they won't give you victory. They do have some value though - if you control a crown it will produce a candle for you each turn.

hEad unfortunately can't carry on playing Marverni due to person issues. I will take the current turn, and see if it's worth looking for a sub.
This also reminded me that I forgot to ask if anyone would be happy to be the admin for this game? It's hard for me to keep track of all the different games going on, so if someone actually playing could be the admin that would be great. All the admin has to do is postpone hostings and stuff if people ask for it. It's all very easy via the website. Any volunteers?

It seems like a lot of people are running into borders quite quickly. I know I have 6 provinces currently, and border 5 other nations (hello Tien Chi, Neifel, Agartha, Ulm, and, uh, I forget the other). Marverni's position sounds enviable. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

Ulm and Agartha, feel free to invade what's left of Lanka. And please, continue on to the lands of the betrayers, Tien Chi. I may not have been able to beat his army, but I've put a very significant dent into it, and he should be weak. Heck, I might even wound or drop his dragon this turn. Wish me luck on that.

you can't enfore nap's. all you can do is not make treaties with players that break them in the future.
Once players get a rep for breaking treaties, they tend to get no more treaties in future games.

So how's it going everyone? I've only had diplomatic talks with my neighbors and am curious to hear what the rest of the world has experienced.
My poor cold blooded lizards are freezing their butts off in cold-3 niefel provinces hopeing in vain for a decisive battle against the giants. It may not be not the greatest idea I ever had, but it will be interesting none the less.
It's been a great war between him and I, started when I thought he overexpanded too fast into independent provinces close to my capitol. Figuring that he thought me for an easy target, I decided to attack him early. My initial armies were no match for his blessed jarls, but found that spamming skeletons did a decent job on them.
It was at a stalemate when tien chi offered to attack him on another front. I thought this a good move and it surely helped me gain the upper hand on the giants. But tien chi's creative diplomacy had proved his undoing when he decided to plan with ulm to divide my lands between them. Fortunately for me, Ulm has been a friendly and honest tribe, he informed me of this and attacked tien chi. I then negotiated for a cease fire with the giants and we were all going to punish the eastern threat. The chinese leader, knowing that he had maybe planned one too many backstabs, left his army in control of the AI, which promptly flooded ulm with his armies.
In a possibly poor decision, I decided that if tien chi is AI and sending all he has towards ulm, I'd better not let niefel gobble up tien chi's provinces. So I gave him 3 turns to defend himself and now we are where we are at. I'm besieging his capitol, but I can't compete with his jarls underwater currently, so I'm cut off from many of his presumably gold and gem rich provinces. It's been fun and stasifying(probably because I've got the upper hand) and hopefully the next few turns will decide our fate in an equally intriguing manner.
I hope you all have had equally fun experiences and I'd love to hear some stories.

Due to a bookkeeping snafu, the treaties with Sauromatia and Niefelheim have been well, lost. You see, last month the great and mighty Gether Kuhadh wanted for a late night snack. And as it turns out, that snack was an assistant of the great library of Ulm, whose duty before being devoured body and soul, was to ferry all of our diplomatic recordings to storage!
Now, we DO have treaties, it's just that our warlords don't know the exact length of said treaties. We're pretty sure the terms with Niefelheim was 6 months was it? But what about our agreement Sauromatia?
A hasty reply from the aforementioned nations would be most welcome.

Thanks for the compliment but I don't really think there's a big difference in power between you, ulm, abysia, the water nations or me.

Huh? The only nation even close to you is Sauromantia.

I didnt think that i was concidered that powerful http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif.
Sure I have the wrath of god but my army isnt as grand as you others and my territory is not the greatest either and recently my lead in dominion has gone as well (Kailasa really grew his dom quickly http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif ). My grand achievment was perhaps my pretender (died recently but shall return...).
Yet one achievment occured when I finally nailed Sauromantians tartarian with mind hunt /threads/images/Graemlins/Balloons.gif.

I will be going out of town July 1-15 as I have no chance to win this game I will not bother to get a sub, or maybe I can get one for the 7-15 it just depends on what my brother is doing, if I cant get a sub I will set my race to AI. If I get a vote on winner I would have to pick Yandav as he has AN up and that is a game ender. Anyway I had a blast playing.

I started a thread to find a sub for you, Zoshan. Maybe you could post there some more details about your in-game situation.
Good game. I will miss your teleporting Mind Lords http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

That's really too bad. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif Personally I believe you're unstoppable at this point, and I'd hate for the game to end with someone else at the reigns of the great Kailasan empire that you have formed...I'd like to vote for the game to end with you the victor. Of course I'll keep trying to wipe out the monkeys if everyone else would rather play on. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

In this case, we should vote quickly because I think it won't be very kind to ask for a sub and then to tell him that the game is over.

I dont oppose on ending the game. I dont know who should win tough. I guess Kailasa and his nexus would be the most likely winner. Still if we continue the game there are lots of things that can happen, and I am as willing to continue as to quit. It depends on what you others think.

As far as I'm concerned, Kailasa has won this one. I have considered it over for a year or so now and the recent abysmal performance of Sauromantia against the Kailasa invasion drove a bunch more nails in the coffin.
(For anyone who doesn't know the situation, Kailasa SC's have been grabbing provinces without difficulty, Sauromantia has one big army in the area being seiged, I'm pretty sure the seiging army can communion up to casting master enslave.)
The only reason I'm still in it at all is to see how things end up in the ocean, otherwise I would have gone AI by now.

I wouldn't mind it either way, it's been five months and I feel like I've learned enough from this game, ya know?
Although I'm kinda surprised you're giving up early, can't Sauromatia cast spells like disintegrate or just spam those poison archers whose poison will always apply on armor hits? (I read that in a thread somewhere, I'll see if I can dig it up.)

I'm just recognizing that it's over and has been for some time.
Nobody did anything when he cast Arcane Nexus. That is where the game really ended.
As for those poison archers--I've got some pretty good scouting of the battle area and I've seen how abysmally Sauromantia's forces have been performing.
I also have provinces next to his capital (his capital is coastal) and thus see something of what he's summoning there.
He's simply going to march over the rest of the world. From what I can see of the world I would say my army would fare best against his SC's but that doesn't matter--there's no way I could hold my territory, he would just cut off my income and my forces would desert. He doesn't even need to do this, my dominion is being squeezed out as it stands.

I did try to dispel the nexus twice, the most recent attempt I used 130 astral gems and failed. With Kailasa's gem income, even if I could dispel it it no doubt would have went back up in no time. There was little point in trying again so I didn't.
Spells like disintegrate (mr check) would have to be spammed like mad to penetrate the mr of the rudras and the seraphs. Ghost rider spamming worked well against the rudra's, but there are too many Seraphs, and I've had no luck taking them down.
This turn it looks like I've lost half of my total army, my cap will be captured within a couple of turns. Too little, too late, did I commence hostilities against Kailasa (I actually didn't realize he had the nexus up, until I chatted with Niefel). http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif
Without question Kailasa has won.

All players agreed (more or less) that Kailasa is winning the game. I'm going to declare the game as finished, but if someone does not agree we can discuss the matter. I will wait until Saturday and then we can begin with congratulations for Yandav. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

I have seen several hundred pearls worth of seraphs, I'm sure there is plenty behind that nexus.
I suspect the only way to take it down is to kill it's caster which I assume is his pretender.
I think I could pull that off by wishing for him but that would do nothing about the SC's already running about and I'm sure he could be called back quickly.

I don't think you can wish for my pretender. You could only wish for an other Oracle. Can someone confirm this?

He would just get another Oracle but not your pretender.

I thought if you wished for a pretender *BY NAME* the guy shows up but doesn't change sides. Do it in a province where you have a lot of firepower and he's dead unless he's scripted to teleport out or something.

Well, thanks Falkor and everyone, this game was a lot of fun and I learnt a lot ( especially about ritual attack spells thanks to Niefelheim and Sauromatia http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif ). I 've been lucky during this game because my first two opponents ( Pangaea and Arcoscephale ) didn't have any archers which are a terrible threat for my ( almost ) naked sacred troops.

I was the one casting earth attack and leprosy over and over on that huge +600 stack of yours.
Oh, and what were the under-water nations doing the whole game? Hadn't heard so much as a peep from them.

We didn't do much.
After I built up a good army I kicked Sauromantia out of the ocean and then the rest of the game R'yleh and I sat there staring at each other.
Neither one of us was really in a position to want to attack.
I had a bunch of underwater-capable Sauromantian troops staring at me and thus I didn't want to send forth anything like my whole army, yet I would have needed much of it to crack his fortresses unless they died of starvation. I had figured he could feed his troops with magic until near the end when I discovered at least some of his troops were starving.
He tried to go into the eastern sea and got kicked back out by the giants. Had Kailasa finished taking out the giants on land we would have been going after that sea. He had more astral casters than I did but at the end I was beginning to field Searphs. They would finally have given me the mobility to start harassing R'yleh. Also, the Kailasa/Sauromantia war meant my army no longer needed to watch the flank and could have been used offensively.
Long ago I realized there was no chance in the world of winning this, I was only looking to conquer the seas.
