View Full Version : Feohtan - Game started! Uploading pretenders.
IndyPendant
January 20th, 2008, 10:44 PM
Patch v3.14 is out, and llamabeast has set the game up. We are good to go!
Once pretenders are uploaded, the first turn will be set to 48 hours, and then it will be 24-hour quickhost until at least Turn 20. Once three people request it, I can extend the quickhost to 48 hours.
With llamabeast's endorsement (and a big thank-you to him too!) in the Valhalla forums, I'm going to set up an EA game played on the Llamaserver. Shooting for 12 players--10 land + 2 water--so we can use my starting locations in Edi's Cradle map.
All setting standard, except Graphs Off and Renaming On (Note: there will be independents in this game, for those that know this map from Forseti.) Worthy Heroes v1.8 will be the only mod.
If you stale twice in a row without contacting me or posting in the thread, you will be put on AI immediately.
The map will be Edi's modified version of Cradle, to which I have added fixed starting positions, to prevent unbalanced random starts (as much as possible, anyways). Here are the changes I made to Edi's Cradle Map:
--The starting provinces are: 76 (Oceania or Atlantis), 78 (R'lyeh or Atlantis), 18, 38, 37, 103, 99, 207, 172, 196, 148, 131.
--All the land nations will be assigned random starts from the above list when the game begins.
--For start 37, provinces 37, 41, and 54 are no longer Waste, 41 becomes a Border Mountain, and 25 becomes a Forest.
--For start 38, provinces 38 and 39 are no longer Waste.
--For start 103, province 93 becomes a Forest as well as Farm, and 94 becomes a Border Mountain.
Let's get signed up, pretenders in, and have some fun!

Well, I can't set anything up for another 12 hours or so. I want another look at the Cradle map before I hand it over to llamabeast.
Let's say we give Folket that much time to respond, and if he doesn't, Baalz is in! Either way, I'll be PM'ing llamabeast in half a day's time with the details.

Thrawn, we'll make a note in case anyone doesn't upload a pretender. Folket, I'm sorry but you haven't gotten back to us to change your nation. Baalz, welcome to the game! (And...*yipe*. ; )
I've uploaded the .map file we'll be using in my original post above (I decided not to make any additional changes for now, other than those I have already listed). I have PM'd llamabeast to give him the specs for the game, and let him know we're ready to go!

rumor says next patch is imminent. would it be a good idea to start the game with it and save all the hassle of upgrading while in game?
IndyPendant
January 22nd, 2008, 07:01 PM
Hmm...we could wait until Friday and see. I don't want to wait longer though, for risk of losing players. And for all we know, the new patch could wreck Worthy Heroes 1.8, although I suppose it's not a big deal to play without it.
llamabeast has already created the game, but it doesn't look right. It's currently saying "Invalid Age" and "Max Players: 0".
So unless people object, let's delay until Friday (or the patch comes out) before we start.
Jurri
January 22nd, 2008, 07:21 PM
I'm fine with waiting until the patch: certainly it's always nicer to avoid patching midgame.

Yes, lets wait for the patch, its supposed to fix dominion spread, which hopefully fixes the scales bug and thats good because on 2 out of 2 test games with EA Rlyeh I got the scales bug!
WraithLord
January 28th, 2008, 07:31 AM
Ahmm, I'm starting to regret suggesting to wait for the patch.
The rumor was not accurate and the patch hasn't come last week . I'm now afraid if we keep on waiting that players will start to lose interest. I prefer the hassle of upgrading to new patch than the possibility of losing this game.

Sorry, I have been a naughty llama. I did actually get your first message but I think I was feeling flustered with work at the time (I probably shouldn't read my PMs *at* work, particularly when feeling flustered) and so it failed to record in my memory properly, if you know what I mean. I'm just teaching in a couple of hours so have to do some emergency marking (and in fact learning!), then I'll get on the case.

Enjoy the game!

This turn something very strange has happened to me.
I was attacked by Vanheim in one of my provinces. This is not surprising since we're at war. What I find very strange is that I was attacked at the heart of my kingdom in a province in which all the neighboring provinces are controlled by me. Of course, if the attacking army was the usual Van stuff I wouldn't have found it strange but that army contained, among else, eight elephants. Now, last time I checked elephants didn't have glamour, nor any stealth ability so I'm really puzzled. How come???
Jurri
February 15th, 2008, 12:09 PM
Sailing maybe? Or is the province completely inland?

I will try and rustle up a sub before I go so the game won't stall for an extended period (I have no problem with waiting until parcelt has access to a working machine by the way).
Edit: Have secured the services of a sub for later in the week. So once parcelt is back up and running the game will go on. Will contact game admin with details for making the switch.

Oceania's start site did klagrok no favours at all. Hope you sign up for some more MP games - once you try them you can't go back.
Sauromatia is preparing to stake its claim on some portion of the newly available provinces but intends to continue to act in a peaceful manner that has for so long characterized our activities. We need to secure some provinces that aren't blasted wastelands and depopulated swamps - we see them under the waves.

I can keep hosting it if no one else wants to--but I would probably need PMs or I might miss key requests. If anyone else wants to take over though, let me know. The 'duties' are really quite simple; the important thing is to be reliable about following through with requests. ; )

Guys, I'm going on a one month vacation starting Apr. 24th.
I would have liked to find a sub for this time but I don't think this is very likely. Subbing for a nation that is in a bitter survival war on two fronts isn't exactly attractive for potential subs.
I'm open for suggestions and in fact this is why I posted in the first place.
Valerius
April 2nd, 2008, 08:45 PM
Ya know, WraithLord, I should have stuck with the rain of stones. It was a lot more effective than that laughable thunderstrike attack a turn ago. Also, it's more fun raiding than being raided. It's tragic that you killed Zwago, who led the HoF in kills.
Thanks for the notice about your vacation. Obviously it's tough for me to give unbiased advice but your vacation is still 10 turns away. Should we see how it goes? If we are still in a stalemate 10 turns from now it likely won't matter since one of the other four nations will just walk in and take us all over.

I'm actually enjoying this war since every turn brings new and interesting developments. WRT RoS, its a fine trick and I always fall for it the first time, usually I try to prevent falling the second time but you caught me off guard on that lousy island.
One last comment - I have refrained from raiding your lands so far in hopes you'll see the senselessness of our war but as you've probably noticed that's not the case anymore http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Yes, I was kind of wondering why Marverni was suffering all the raiding and I was receiving none, though I was raiding you. It looks like we were even this past turn - both losing two thugs.

At last, a hero has emerged, he's fast and he's strong and well, he's subbing for Ctis.
Please welcome Cerlin, the bane of Vanheim and Marverni (hopefully http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif ). Give them hell I say and let them rue the day WL has gone on vacation http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/cool.gif
Baalz, can you please advise about the mechanics of subbing with llamaserver?

Gah, what a miserable turn. I must salute a masterful outmaneuvering by Sauromatia/Digress, and of course the implacable Nieflehiem/Jurri continues to grind me down without so much as noticing the speedbumps I try to throw up. GG guys, Pangea is broken.

Cerlin, welcome to the game. WL, it's been a lot of fun battling it out, have a great vacation.
Baalz, if you'd like I can take over admin duties.

Thank you Valerius.
You know, I've got to hand it to you, you're one helluva cunning and tenacious enemy. Geez, next time I end up your neighbor I'll think long and hard before attacking you. You did very well in your campaign against me and I've enjoyed the excitement as well.
I recall Jurri describing, IIRC, RZ as his kryptonite, during this game I've started to think of you on the same terms. It seems you have an uncanny ability to predict my moves. Mind you I've tried to change pace, tactics and strategy vs. you several times this game and you seemed to predict those changes as well. I think the most likely explanation is we have a very similar thinking pattern or something.

I'll do my best to try to continue your strats and think of new ones.

Would it be possible to get an extension? I will do my turn in the chance that its not but this turn had a LOT of stuff to do and Im still figuring out this position. 24 h max but i'd have it done in like 12 hours from the host date.

Thanks very much, WraithLord. Marverni and I had a 2 to 1 advantage yet it felt like for every province we took, you took one of ours (Marverni getting the brunt of your raids). I do think we have a similar way of thinking. I definitely felt that if I didn't keep switching tactics you would make me pay for my predictability.
Cerlin, absolutely. I'll delay the game 24 hours.

Umm, apparently I don't know the difference between PM and forum posts. Well, in case anyone hasn't seen the above post I guess I'll delete it. Looks like I've got a nice item for the Hall of Doh! thread. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

Off to a family funeral/tree planting thing in the country this Sunday - will be out of town for the next three days.
Have turn file in so hope I won't hold the game up much.
Hope an extension will be forthcoming for the next turn (24-36 hrs).

Sure, no problem. I've delayed hosting by a day. I've also turned off quickhost as I'll need a little more time for the next turn. Once that hosts I'll turn quickhost back on.

I will be out for the long memorial day weekend, leaving this wednesday and back next tuesday. I might be able to get a turn in over the weekend but can't guarantee it.
Could we postphone the hosting deadline until the 28th? If quickhost is on we might be able to process a turn in between.

I'm going to delay hosting for a couple days.

Have machine up and running with Linux/new hard drive and my own ISP/router at home. Have some work to catch up on (some e-mails to deal with) but will get turn in pronto.
The new patch sounds like it is going to do some terribly dire things to my Tartarians .... so much for that cheap way to get some magical diversification going.
Sorry everyone - I should be back up and running real soon.

I have had to delay hosting for 12 hours - just broke my router. Firmware update has messed up my router (I think) - e-mail not being sent of recieved.
Will get turn in ASAP.

Hi guys,
I have been handed the keys to the game (admin wise). I have already made unannounced hosting delays, which I will admit was poor form and will not be repeated. It appears I had delayed hosting the last turn long enough for me to get my turn in but allowed Lanka to stale. I also fear that I have done exactly the same thing to Neifelheim a couple of turns ago.
I would like to say that in neither case was it intentional - I based the hosting delays on the 6 hour warning e-mails but it still sucks.
I am not able to get the turn in time this evening and am going to allow myself to stale - and am happy to be replaced as game admin.
cheers

It appears that by taking the "I will stale" course I will also allow Neifelheim to stale.
This is less than ideal - I have delayed hosting by 24 hours and hopefully the three of us can work out some sort of hosting schedule.
cheers again,
Digress

Would it help you make turns if we extended the hosting period structurally with a few hours?

Apologies for the stale - I sent in my turn a few times but the llamaserver wouldn't acknowledge it. I was running late so had to stop trying, hoping that one of my emails would get through after all. Guess not.

Guys, I am going to set myself to AI. I am relocating for work, and this was moved forward by six weeks (was supposed to be mid-september). My schedule is crazy and I can't find the time to get turns done.
I had a blast playing, thanks for the game.

Turns are something of an issue for me, for a completely different reasons. The last couple of turns I did manage to get in were "maintenance" turns - replacing temples knocked down by own tarts, moving around blood hunters and attempting to hold onto castles.
No forging, no offensive moves ... no rituals (other than monthly ones).
Valerius
August 6th, 2008, 03:52 AM
Does this mean Jurri's Niefelheim gets the win?
Digress
August 6th, 2008, 04:03 AM
I reckon that if my tartarians quit pulling my temples down I might be able to get a dom kill in.
I have 10 candles on his capital at present and Lanka has to be putting some pressure on his remaining dominion (along with my continued push). I will PM Jurri to see what he wants to do - have been trying to force him to storm a castle or two to get rid of some of my temples whilst he seems set on economically crippling me. Its been an odd game ...
Valerius
August 6th, 2008, 04:10 AM
Ok, so the result is still in question. If the game is going to continue is it worth seeking a sub for Lanka?

August 8th, 2008, 08:17 AM
Lanka has been set to AI. I understand that Jurri is likely to set Neifelheim to AI shortly.
If the game was decided on dominion alone Sauromatia wins. I have no idea how powerful Lanka actually was before it went AI.
In short ... I don't know.
I do know that I am an awfully deliquent admin .... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/Sick.gif

Game is finished ... Neifelheim suffered dominion kill two turns after Jurri had set the giants to AI. So many blood slaves went into the effort - pesky candles flickering on in the far corner of the map - deep in Lankan territory.
I think my dominion push would have put Lanka under enormous pressure the moment all of Neifelheim's temples went poof.
I don't know whether I would have won for sure but I reckon I had to be getting close.

Congratulations, Digress! Nice use of dominion.
I entered the win in the victorious nations thread.
