I was going to probe interest first and see if there are enough people interested in a game with mods. I know that most new people prefer vannilla version. So sorry for not writing first, I hope you are not angry http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Thrawn:
List how much you have played and how long in that games, so we will see.
Heinrich:
There is rather a big difference in 1st MP game and even second. It is good to try at least some blitz games, you learn then a lot about designing a pretender, which is much much different than in SP. With vanilla game some races are unwinnable and I hope that CBM will help it at least to some degree.

I've played in 2 games here and lost. Have played about 6 other games through a different forum. But I'd be interested in this. I'd consider myself maybe semi to advanced newbish. Played enough to know that communion spells are great. But have also killed a lot of mages using them.

There is a good manual for it http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif You should rather know what it is, not specifically use it. With Ulm it is a bit hard to do http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

What are the turn requirements - how often will players need to get a turn in?
cleveland
January 31st, 2008, 10:53 PM
I must of course jump at the chance to resume smiting my former Urapara foes.
If I may voice my preferences:
Players - the more the merrier
Age - Late Age (gotta see Bogarus in action)
Map - World of Geometry & Alexander are both excellent choices; I recommend keeping the ratio of land:sea nations = ratio of land:sea provinces
Style - FFA...have played 1 team game, and it wasn't as much fun as Urapara
Mods - all sound pretty good
Banned spells - rather than banning utterdark & nexus, why not just ban their 2 main beneficiaries (Ermor & Rhyleyhehyh (sp?))
Other settings - boosting indy strength to ~7 makes for a more interesting early game. I'd also recommend something like 30 min turns for the 1st 10 turns (because these shouldn't take anyone more than 1min, newbie or not), and 36hr quickhost turns thereafter (so that everyone can play @ the same time each day w/out pressure, if they so choose).
Thanks for organizing Z...what's your projected start time/date?
Omnirizon

count me in.
I've only played in one other game before (actually still involved in it). I'd like a shot at a second game to apply the lessons I've learned from this first one (like don't let pretender die on 2nd turn).
I vote LA or EA. MA feels too.... middlish for me http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
but I'll play whatever.
edit: and I vote FFA too. Of course I'm fine either way.

24-30 hours for about first 20-35 turns, then 48. I guess 72 after turn 100.

Phoenix Fire didn't kill my mage. Being a communion slave did. Had some guys set up for communion slaves. Killed some PD and about 20 troops. then watched in horror as the enemy didn't route off the field in time to save my mage who died of fatigue.
That wasn't my worst move. I had a tricked out air queen that I scripted to cast enough spells to paralyze her. Then the enemy marched up to her and killed her while she was asleep thus losing some artificat armor, shields, weapons.
I do know what SC, bless, thug are. Think I know what raiding is too.

In my blitz game as LA Agartha I had about 20 mages in communion, I easily won a battle with almost 100 elephants and when last enemy was just going to rout my master casted Phoenix Pyre, thus all slaves got it too. As they were fatigued I got huge explosion that killed aboue 30 units, 16 mages and they didn't return as they were fatigued.

Hello.
I am a newbie to MP, yet I have been playing single for two years so I know the game pretty well. I would like to join in on this game if welcome.
I have no certain desires on age or rules at this point, as long as they are kept simple.
I prefer to roleplay my pretenders, making up a personality for them and play the game accordingly, in the future Iīd like to make mp games focused on that.
Looking forward to try MP.

It seems that we have a tendency. I think we have then LA, graphs off. From mods we have CBM 1.2 only as it has WH. Ermor and R'lyeh are banned. We will wait for more players and get to picking nations. Meanwhile play a bit with CBM, it has many things really different.

11 we have.

Omnirizon - Agartha

Cleveland - Pangea
Ylvali - Atlantis [be lucky there is no R'lyeh and you are the only water nation]

Just been playing around with LA Atlantis in SP. Seems like a real challenge, but fun. Even though there is great potential to get hold in the water you canīt recruit mages or decent troops there, So I wonīt be able to just settle for lurking in the deep. I will have to get hold on land as well.
And LA mictlan has good potential for water domination too, as good as me Iīd say. Weīll see when we meet.
On the other hand Atlantis can be a useful ally due to itīs ability to strike behind enemy lines. It sure will be an interesting position.

Just in case Pashadawg doesn't get back with updated start locations, I've attached a modified version of the Alexandria_no_sites map. It's been run through David Fidge's excellent Starting Locations Modifier (http://users.on.net/~dfidge/cgi-bin/dom3map.pl) with min_neighbors=5, and min_sea=3.
In summary, all provinces with fewer than 5 neighbors have been marked "no-start".

I've been speaking with Pasha and he should do it Monday-Tuesday. I don't want to make starting locations by myself because I play here. And random, even among good starting positions, is not a really fair solution - I don't want to repeat mistakes from Urapara, where Abysia got extremely good starting position.

Utgard [strong]
Midgard [strong]
Abysia [considered below average]
Caelum [well, less air, more death magic if I remember well]
Ulm [tin people teamed with vampires]
Man [not the one Man we know, they have nicer mages, can use communion and have crossbowmen too]

Zeldor
February 11th, 2008, 02:35 PM
You will upload it on llamaserver, by e-mail. But I need for new CBM, because you need to activate the same mod that will be used in game while creating pretenders. I will write here when game on server is created and you can upload pretenders. Meanwhile test your nations and check what your opponents have. And check pretender designs, scales matter more in CBM so bless is more expensive. And some pretenders have changed a lot.

Mod installation is easy: unzip the file, copy all of it's contents to the Mods folder in your Dominions 3 directory, open the game, select Preferences-->Mod Preferences-->Conceptual Balance Mod.
This game will presumably begin later today, so I HIGHLY recommend practicing w/CBM asap; at least try out the new pretenders, most have been tweaked.

I don't think that's a good idea, we will all know where the other players are, taking the majority of diplomacy and expansion strategy out of the game.

Hi:
Unfortunately, Zeldor has caught me when I don't have a lot of time to manually do up a set of starting positions from scratch. I did the current set up quickly without knowing who was playing which nation. While it is true that Arco has a nice starting position, it is a wraparound map, and Arco needs to worry about Marignon, Jomon, Atlantis and Utgard.
If players agree that it is too unbalanced, then I'd suggest two things:
(1) start the game over and let the AI set the starting positions. There are several spots that are "no start" on the map, and so, I think there's a good chance that no one will get a "sucky" starting position.
(2) Zeldor or someone else could do up a set of manually placed starting positions that are assigned randomly by the AI. That way, no one will unintentionally favor himself/herself.
It's very easy to edit the map file. The command lines are in the map edit pdf that came with the game. The full list of nation #'s was updated in the modding pdf. Beware that the list states Jotunheim where it should state Jomon. The time consuming part is deciding where the starting positions will be.
As a third choice, I'd be happy to edit the map file, if someone else could tell me where the non-nation-specific starting positions should be. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

winRAR is a shareware program that will unpack RAR. You should go ahead and install it, because it is a popular file format and you are bound to run across it many more times in your internet life. Better to have rather than having to always ask for a differently packed format.
http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm
If you do not plan to actually by winRAR after the "40 day trial", and have some moral objections to this, then there are plenty of freeware RAR unpackers. Look at the bottom of the wiki page for RAR, and it should list some.

Zeldor: yes, the tga-file is the picture of the map, and it is the only file the players will need (apparently turn file contains all information they need about the game). The calculations happen in wholy different server, so players do not need the map file. This is useful when editing a map (like has been done here) so everyone do not have to download it.

We may need to restart. The game complains my turn file is corrupt; I suspect that the reason for this is that I made my god with only CB-mod version 1.2 (I actually downloaded the new version but didn't move the .dm file to right directory, and did not select the new version of the mod). First turn went fine, but I cannot do my next turn. I'm sorry about this, but I cannot really participate to this game without restart.

Pasha - it's a quirk of Dominions that games started from the command line have VPs. Although I suspect I may have found a workaround. I've never paid it much attention because it's never bothered me, but maybe it's worth playinh with if it bothers other people.

ILION, Alexandria, Late Spring of Year 2 - Peace negotiations between Arcoscephale and Pangaea have collapsed, and a de facto state of war exists between the two nations.
Relations have been strained since Arcoscephale made a bold yet unsuccessful attempt to exclude Western nations from its continent: In an operation that analysts are terming "A Farmland Too Far," Arcroscephale's own pretender rushed toward strategically vital Byzantion (224), only to be stopped dead in his tracks - literally - by Byzantion's fiercely independent inhabitants (click image below).

"Arcoscephale already has substantially more room to expand than any other nation. Allowing him to control all of the Lands of Jomon (whoever that is) without resistance was unthinkable," said General Sophipania of Pangaea. "The decision was made to repel this aggressor before he took an insurmountable lead."
Indeed earlier this month, Pangaean special forces launched a surprise raid on the fertile farmland of Ilion (202), conquering the province and halting construction of an elaborate Arcoscephalian Fortified City. Pangaean diplomats then approached Arcoscephale with an offer of peace and a proposal for fair & sustainable boarders.
Negotiations lasted well into the night before finally breaking down early this morning.
Both nations are expected to fall behind on research and expansion, though Arcoscephale appears to be worse-off: "Arcoscephale's 4 other neighbors - Marignon, Atlantis, Utgard, and Agartha - all must be licking their chops right now, eager to carve into the expansive frontier that Arco would have been expected to conquer. I'm sure they recognize the opportunity they have - with Arco's pretender MIA and all his forces tied down in the Northeast - to limit the damage of Arco's wildly advantageous starting position," one pundit said.

There is a smell that has been blowing across the seas from the West ... it has been irritating the Nagas for some time now. Finally, its origin has been found -- the lands of Utgard. These odorous giants will need to be cleaned up. Or at least so says the prophet Amitatman.
He took a company of Naga warriors and went fishing in the seas. While he has taken to the taste of Ichtyids, he was suffering through a meal of Tritons when -- having surfaced for some fresh air to cure his nausea -- he encountered the giant smell blowing off of the coast to his north. Needless to say, his illness only became more acute. So he has decided to conquer those lands out of spite. He's a brash snake-man, to say the least.
I advice the giants in Utgard to brace themselves. There will be plenty of hissing coming your way!
[OOC: How's that for a fabricated casus belli!]

The brash snakemen will find the smell of the giants isn't nearly as strong as a blessed Jotun Battle Axe. Let their last sight be looking up into an immense hairy armpit connected to 50 pounds of sharpened steel. Perhaps a silver tongue has encourged your ardor? Do tell.

There is grumbling among the Nagas that the prophet is becoming a monster. He was overheard remarking that Huskarls taste as bad as they smell. The Warriors look the other way at his dishonorable habit of devouring his enemies alive with the conviction that his growing evil will be dealt with upon the advent of the True God, Circe.

I've been pondering the merits of trying to get a 24-hour hosting game that doesn't delay - for anything. You get sick? Find a sub or stale your turn.
Harsh, but I wonder if people would be up for it.
Sorry for the complete tangent there.
Omnirizon
March 22nd, 2008, 07:07 AM
it isn't an issue of spot delays.
it is an issue that this game has been on a 48 hour timer since something like turn 5.
it is an issue that the culprit of this delay was none other than the host and admin, who had set a ground rule (check post one) of 24 hour timer for first 20 turns.
it is an issue that this person has consistently been the SOLE reason of delay.
it is an issue that this person used their host/admin privlege to adjust the timing of the game to their own whims (that is, bump up to a 48 hour timer without ever having consulted anybody else in the game)
it is an issue that all this behavior, taken together, is simply rude and inconsiderate.
sorry Zeldor. but that's all been on my chest for some time now. had to mention it all; it's better for the long run. nothing personal.

And rules were simple - 24 hours till wars, 48 hours with wars. That is not my fault that cleveland just cannot live with lost war against me in previous game. We did fight for 40-50 turns there and it will be like that here, I guess.

couple of things:
1) I, Bogarus, have very rarely been the last player. Usually I'm among the last 3 but I'm usually not the last.
2) Trying to get a trade honored after you declare war on someone is a lot of guts.
3) 48 hours is pretty good for turns. Especially for folks in wars and are coordinating trades etc.
4) Bogarus is interesting but the infantry sucks.

SPARTA, Alexandria, Late Spring of Year 3 - Oltarnees, serpentine pretender of Arcoscephale, has again been slain.
The mighty Wyrm arose from the sea in a rear guard action, attempting to open a new front on the previously quiet Southern boarder in the Pan-Arco war.
But Pangaean National Guardmanikins mustered a stalwart defense, overwhelming the beast before it could cause a single casualty.
A (second) memorial has been erected in the Hall of Fame in honor of Oltarnees.

You sent me a pm last week which I missed because Iīve been busy. In that pm you proposed some agreement about the waters. You mustīve taken my silence for a yes. Truth is I havenīt given this game much attention at all, partially because it ran to slow to keep up motivation.
To me it seemed you attacked me for no reason. So I attacked you back and underlined that with a message to add some roleplay.
So the whole thing is a misunderstanding and I cannot see why you need to make a big hassle and send me pms telling me how I will be "doomed in every MP game now" and "no one will trust you". You start a newbie game and that is how you treat the newbies?
I think that kind of personal attack ruins the game completely. I donīt want to involve any feeling but fun when I play dominions. It is just a game after all. A toy for big kids.
You have ruined the fun of this Alexandria game and that means Iīll put this toy away. I am not prepared to play when players take in-game stuff out of the game and make a personal RL conflict out of it. I will call for a sub and focus on other games instead.
And I can only hope you are mature enough to put this behind you and meet on a proper level in future games.
EDIT: I got a bit angry when I wrote this, prhaps Iīm overreacting. Iīll chill out and maybe be back to play again.
