View Full Version : TigerCat - new MA game (running)

llamabeast
February 2nd, 2008, 04:18 PM
Right, thought I would start a new game. This one will be an MA game. I'm open to suggestions for the map, but we'll aim for about 15 provinces/player, so we'll see how many players we get first.

Settings: Renaming on, everything else on default except graphs. Please vote on whether you'd like graphs on or off.

Since there's also a newbie game starting right now (Acouchi) for players who've only played 0-2 games, I guess this game is really meant for those who already have at least a little MP experience.

We'll play with Worthy Heroes 1.8 (http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/threads/showthreaded.php?Number=560854). Also for this game (and I think probably for most future games I host), players are free to choose from any of Skaven (http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/threads/showthreaded.php?Number=525736), Tomb Kings (http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/threads/showthreaded.php?Number=532151) or Arga Dis (http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/threads/showthreaded.php?Number=518590) (mod nations) as well as the vanilla nations. I think these nations are all well balanced and thematically interesting (I am biased in the case of Tomb Kings since it's my mod, but I do think it's true). While it's hard to measure balance accurately I think they certainly lie within the range of the vanilla nations (i.e. they are all more powerful than e.g. MA Ulm and less than e.g. MA Pythium). Of course if no-one chooses these nations they won't be in the game.

So far we have:

Abysia - Velusion
Ulm - Jazzepi
R'lyeh - JanIm
C'tis - Sir_Dr_D
T'ien Ch'i - BigandScary
Caelum - Falkor
Ermor - IndyPendant
Bandar Log - BigDisAwesome
Marignon - Thrawn
Man - DryaUnda
Tomb Kings - LoloMo
Skaven - vfb
Jotunheim - Valerius
Atlantis - Sivoc
Oceania - Digress

Please sign up!

I'm in... I'll take Abysia.

What will the hosting schedule be?

Also if you would like me to pregenerate some good random maps once we know how many players I can do that.

llamabeast
February 2nd, 2008, 04:53 PM
Thanks Velusion, that might be helpful.

The hosting schedule will be 24 hours for as long as we can manage it (ideally 30 turns or more, but less if people would like the timer extended), then 48 hours, and if necessary 72 in the late game.

Jazzepi
February 2nd, 2008, 05:31 PM
I'll take Ulm.

I like a challenge D:

I attached the readme file of the WH mod. You will find the list of heroes there but without stats.

pythium seems nice to me

PS I'm not experienced but I like a challange and want to see (=learn) from what pplz do to hurt me http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

I've learned a lot from my previous game and want to put that to good use in this game though I suppose pythium plays very differently than LA midgard

Hmm, I think I'll try Ermor.

Vote: Graphs off. ; )

BigDisAwesome

I'm in as Bandar Log. It was the very first nation I tryed MP, so we'll see if I've learned anything.

Graphs on is my vote.

do we use a CB mod? scales and gods maybe? I liked it in my last game.
and can I use the streamer and flags or something mod? I like those banners.

I don't mind the banners but I'll be dropping out if it switches to CB.

I would like to give the rats a try (skaven), so sign me up for that. Meanwhile I will go pester sombre for tips.

edit: I am fine with cb

Falkor
February 3rd, 2008, 06:35 PM
Same for me. I am against CB mod in this game.

llamabeast
February 3rd, 2008, 08:36 PM
Although I think there's something to be said for the CB pretenders and scales, we won't use them for this game. This is because (a) I didn't mention it when people were signing up, and (b) I think including some mod nations is enough innovation for this game, no point pushing it.

Arga Dis, please. I'll vote for graphs on.

llamabeast
February 4th, 2008, 06:11 AM
Cool. Okay, the rate of new players seems to be slowing down so we can probably close it and choose a map and stuff soon. At the moment we've only got one water nation though. So, next people to sign up: please consider being a water nation.

Aezeal
February 4th, 2008, 10:56 AM
so will we use the standards and streamers or whatever it's callen then? I kinda like it?

And if everyone dislikes CB scales and gods then I'm fine with not using it... I just thought that (especially the gods part) was rather more balanced than it normally was.

Sivoc
February 4th, 2008, 01:29 PM

llamabeast
February 5th, 2008, 03:48 PM
What Aezeal, you're away all of next week? I'd rather not delay the game that long.

As for Streamers and Standards - I think I'll say no, partly just because the mod nations will look funny if we use it.

Right, sorry everyone for being slow on getting this wrapped up. I think I will call a close on new players now though. So, shall we try doing a random map for a change? Velusion, would you be able to sort that out?

Velusion
February 5th, 2008, 05:25 PM
Yep I set some to generate last night. I'll take a look at them tonight.

Jazzepi
February 5th, 2008, 05:38 PM

llamabeast
February 5th, 2008, 06:11 PM
Okay Aezeal. Well... maybe it would be best to wait till the next game then. I'd rather not delay the game for a week just as it's starting to be honest. There'll probably be another one by the time you get back.

BigDisAwesome

Opinions?

All the oceans are connected btw... I left only room for one nation to start out on the northeast top islands. The connections are a bit odd... you'd be island hoppers - but I think it'd be rather interesting.

This assumes all 3 water nations are present of course. I preset them in specific starting locations as evenly spaced apart as possible.

Valerius
February 6th, 2008, 05:35 PM
Sorry, but I think I'll switch to Jotunheim. I've been wanting to try that nation. Thanks.

Okay, the game is now open to pretenders. Mod nations please don't send yours in though, I want to check for issues and possibly create a multimod first (which might change nation numbers).

I am contemplating whether to play Arga Dis myself. The correct answer, based on how much free time I have, is no. But I am so tempted...

llamabeast
February 7th, 2008, 02:06 PM
PS Aezeal, I'm inclined to remove you from this game being as you won't be able to play for the first week. Objections? Otherwise Pythium is now free if anyone wants to switch.

llamabeast
February 7th, 2008, 02:34 PM
A couple of people just sent in pretenders and may have hit error messages. Sorry, it was a bungle at my end, fixed now though.

llamabeast
February 7th, 2008, 09:20 PM
I won't play Arga Dis, I've decided. It would be madness, since I am really too busy at the moment (and am currently in 5(!) games, although I expect to be out of three quite soon).

Aezeal
February 7th, 2008, 10:13 PM
no if you start the next week then I don't wanna play, thought we had already covered that and was already looking for a new game.. no use in playing a game when you miss the first 7 turns http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Velusion

We going to have a deadline for uploading pretenders?

llamabeast
February 8th, 2008, 03:41 PM
Sounds like a good idea. How about a deadline of tomorrow night at midnight (GMT). I'll start the game as soon as I get up on Sunday morning.

Apologies for being a bit slack in getting this game going. I chose a bad time to start organising it and have been a bit over-busy. But now it's the weekend, hurrah!

llamabeast
February 8th, 2008, 10:33 PM
Actually I think you will be good to send the mod nations as they are, there shouldn't be any need to do a multimod. I was thinking there would be because I had to do one for Marmoset, but that was pre-patch and was because there were problems with hitting unit limits (so I had to judiciously remove units and stuff). Those issues are all sorted now (hurrah!).

llamabeast
February 11th, 2008, 07:39 AM
Okay, we have all the pretenders in now. I'm sorry though guys, I'm having real difficulty getting to starting this game. I have to do it at home (since it includes mod nations you have to create it via the GUI, which is something I'm hoping JK will eventually fix), and I just haven't been at home very much. Won't be tonight either till nearly midnight, but I will start it either then or in the morning hopefully. Sorry again for the slow start.

Don't forget to fix the servant of seth weapon!

llamabeast
February 12th, 2008, 12:39 PM
Oh yeah sorry, I forgot to mention. I fixed the Servant of Set weapon and Sombre's fixed the Verminlord issue with the Skaven. It might be a good idea for people to download the latest versions of the mods. For convenience I'll stick the two new dm files in a zip file here (the graphics haven't changed). Both the mod threads also have the latest versions attached to the first post.

Jazzepi
February 12th, 2008, 12:39 PM

Kitchen Sink II.dm

I can't find a link to this anywhere =\ Little help please?

Jazzepi

llamabeast
February 12th, 2008, 12:43 PM
What?! Oh, grumble grumble.

This is a bug in dominions whereby it randomly includes other mods from your mods folder when starting a new MP game (Velusion, do you ever hit this?). Normally when starting games on the LlamaServer I have to manually move my mods folder elsewhere and create a dummy one only containing the required mods while I start the game. Because I started this game at home, and via the GUI, I didn't think to do it.

The Kitchen Sink mod includes things like higher clam prices and stuff. It's all good stuff, but it's not really fair to include it without warning people. Guess I'd better do a restart... will do it in a few hours.

Velusion
February 12th, 2008, 01:44 PM
Yep its a little tricky through the GUI. You have to make sure only mods you want to use are enabled. when you start the game.

Janlm
February 12th, 2008, 01:50 PM
hmm, i don't know if it matters now that the game will restart anyway, but I didn't receive my first turn.

What is involved with admining the game? I suppose I could do it.

llamabeast
February 12th, 2008, 08:24 PM
So, it turned out that the Kitchen Sink mod was sneakily enabled, and having no banner I didn't see it. I've done a restart now.

In text mode though, it seriously does enable mods you don't tell it to. It's weird. It loves Ulm Reborn, and will always include it if given the chance.

Velusion - just postponing hostings/changing the hosting interval as appropriate. You can do it all via the web interface. If you're up for it I'll PM you the password.

You bring much joy to Skaven, for you have given us much inspiration! Perhaps you will be our muse?

We see a vision of a fortress ... and from it far-off hills, from which a cloud rises. A great rumbling grows, louder and louder, and the ground shakes! Over the hills come the Mammoth Bombs, great beasts with a fierce fire in their belly, charging forward, insane with the pain that burns inside. They crash into the walls of the fortress, and with perfect timing the poisons in their bellies ignite and explode. A sight the world has never seen, the walls are blown asunder, and stone, flesh, blood, and fur rains down from the sky!

So, how much for a couple mammoths? We will begin drawing up plans for our experiments immediately.

The new scale mechanics are a bit interesting http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/Sick.gif. My pretender designs are usually somewhat sub-optimal/deeply flawed but I tend to favour good scales and highish dominion.

Have done everything to aid dominion spread .... to no avail.

Call it that if you want, but I was only grabbing an independent province and our armies clashed.

vfb
February 26th, 2008, 04:02 AM
Ulm grabbed an independent province that was part of a previous deal with Skaven.

Skaven's messenger to Ulm said:

If you'd like to keep your pact with Skaven, we've agreed to the following border:

Skaven: 175,164,143,150

Ulm: 192,180,182,166

159 (water) is for whoever gets it first.

Ulm's King responded saying that he'd get back to us in a couple of hours.

We received no more messengers, but we thought you would not ignore the border that had been agreed upon, so we only sent sufficient forces to defeat the small indy army in 150. Imagine our surprise to find your warriors there waiting for us.

If Ulm does not wish war with Skaven, then you may notify us that you are leaving 150, and we will resume our peaceful gnawing and scavenging and festering in the forests.

The whole old administrative staff have been put to the block, as they tried to run the empire from behind my back. Most probably they thought me to be some gullible fop easily manipulated. A most understandable misunderstanding! There is always much chaos when a new King comes to the crown. The nation of Skaven admires the Ulmish King for his fairness and integrity.

Skaven is most sorry for any insults we may have flung at the shining Knights of Ulm, and regrets our bellicose and untrusting nature, in sending out orders to commit ourselves to battle. Please understand we are just a bunch of dirty rats.

Now we must cut short our apologies, and send new orders to our commanders with great haste!

Ermor would like to place a bounty on Caelum!

Caelum has a Cyclops Pretender that does not have any paths in Astral. This pretender is currently (Turn 24) isolated in a province without any allies, no laboratory, and only my own spy with it. That province is Vath (78).

Ermor offers a bounty of SIXTY GEMS(!!!), in any combination of your choice of Astral, Death, and/or Nature to the nation that manages to slay Caelum's Cyclops, upon showing proof (such as a screenshot). Mind Hunt is probably your best bet, assuming anyone can cast it yet. Alternatively, Ermor will buy Mind Hunt castings of any nation capable of casting the spell.

I will keep running updates on his Cyclops' position as turns progress, and this bounty will remain open until the reward is collected. And also note that the reward is negotiable, if you have another preference.

Also, mermen dancers failed miserably when they ran into a couple of Blade Winds. Should have known better than to try the same trick twice.

Even more Gah, should have tried harder to cut off the retreat from Skaven.

Death rains from the sky on Ulm's infantry. The great Buzzard, though a wee bit crippled, limping, and weakened, cannot be stopped. Skaven Special Forces reports yet more success in taking control of another province in the Ulm heartland. The heroine of Ulm flees in terror from the mighty Skaven ratlings.

But sadly, Skaven High Command was having too much fun planning their battles, and diplomacy was neglected. Now there are strange fish-men frolicking in the forests of the west! Begone from our lands, fish-men! Skaven is a land of death and misery and sad poems. It is no place for dancing with wolves.

A dramatic retreat from the Skaven capital as darkness falls from above. Alas, the Grey Seers are powerful and will not be beaten easily. But have faith, as I write this hundreds upon hundreds of heavily armored troops leave the castles of Ulm to keep the fight strong. We will not be beaten. Thousands of man hours the Ulmish troops spent digging graves for the furry and overgrown rodents also known as Skaven. Even more time was spent burying their smaller cousins - the brown rats - that bravely tried to stand up on their wee little back legs, taking arms against the human aggressors. Clad in massive black steel, the Ulmish troops had no choice but to impale and splatter them with their heavy weapons or else they get inside their armor, gnawing off precious objects.

A commander of Ulm was asked why he let his troops occupy themselves with the menial task of digging graves for tiny rats. He answered that they partly did it honor the little furries (as he called them) for their bravery, but mostly to hide their hideous smell. "These rats smell way more than normal rats, like small furry factories of toxic waste gone bad..."

Some days ago a detachment of the 3rd Fist of Steel regiment found a cave deep inside the polluted forest believed to be the source of the rat mutation. Just outside the dark hole a large number of rats wearing "cute" (as one soldier described it) robes were seen, apparently occupied with some strange a ritual. The troops surprised them mightily, giving them no time to prepare any nasty magic spells. Stretching their tiny paws into the air one of the rats suddenly signaled to the others. In a flash everyone threw of their robes, dropped on all four and scurried away in all directions. Left on the ground was a big pile that could only be described as loot. The soldiers understandably forgot all about any rats.

Some weeks later a rat assassin we caught (in the act) told us that that what the troops had seen by the cave was probably the great meeting of Grey Seers. He also told us that the leader of that circle, the Great Grey Seer Biggus Rattus, had been missing for several weeks.

"He will return!", the prisoner screamed when we released him in the forest along with the other rats a couple of days later. Then a large owl swooped down and promptly ate him. "Back to nature", the King of Ulm said smiling, his first smile in years.

Finding the mortally wounded dragon hiding in his cave lair, the hero Ruprecht drew his trusted "Faithful", a sword of great power, to finally slay the beast. Buzzard, murderer of over 200 Ulmish soldiers and peasants, had been pierced by a dozen of arbalest bolts in the battle before, and now lay panting inside. Although he could barely move it was to be a fierce battle between them.

Outside the cave less valiant men stood and nervously waited for the outcome. Would Buzzard fly out to slay them all, or would Ruprecht victoriously emerge with the dragons head on a pike?

After what seemed like ages Ruprech suddenly stood before them covered in blood. "It is done", he said. And everyone around him exploded with joy and tears flowed from their eyes.

"All hail the dragon slayer!"

Here is a picture depicting the epic struggle between Ruprecht and the dragon Buzzard. Also seen to the left is one of the maidens Buzzard (the evil) supposedly took and captured.

Then why don't you empower someone else ? you know someone who is a level zero mage to start with, then slap on some boosters and cast a rather expensive summoning spell (not for a unique unit mind you).

Well then nothing will turn up.

Its great to spend well north of 150 earth gems to yield nothing ... except three or four turns of lost mage time.

Well, I'm going down. I won the war Caelum started against me, but in order to do it I had to commit all my resources--resources that would have better been spent on castles and researchers, just as one example. We're at Turn 47, and I am still below 200 RP per turn!

My only chance as I saw it was to take Ulm's castles and land in the hopes of catching up a bit. But when I attacked Ulm, he called on Neheraka for help, and now it's two against one. My army is still powerful, but I can't handle two foes at once in my war-weary condition. I have asked our mutual neighbours for aid, and I was simply ignored. I can't win this one alone. *shrug*

Since I was the aggressor here, since my eventual loss is assured, and since fighting to my last breath would be of most benefit players who can't even be bothered to respond to my requests for help (even just to say they could not provide any), I see no need to continue playing.

Setting myself to A.I. Nicely played, Ulm, and good luck! ; )

I need some more time for this turn so I'm delaying hosting by 6 hours. New hosting time is 7:35 GMT.

I have requested a short hosting delay - we Oceanians get confused the moment we get out of the water.

"Like dude, where's my useful battle magic ?"

http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif I remember the game where my ally moved his capricorns to land and we first realized they lose a level in all their paths. It was ... disheartening

In any case, I could use more time as well so I've delayed hosting by 12 hours.

Have submitted my current turn but have to travel to a funeral first thing tomorrow and will be away for the best part of three days.

Hope to get extension.

Cheers.

Could we please get an extension to tomorrow. Much to do right now... IRL (sigh).

Ok, hosting for this turn postponed by a day and after this turn I'll delay hosting by another day.

No problem - it was actually quite self-serving since I needed the time as well.

I'm sorry to say that I have to leave this game (and others) due to real life concerns. I'm in the middle of final exams and then I'm moving.

Sorry guys. I will try to find a replacement.

And just when it was getting interesting.

We in Oceania have had a good look at what is happening above the waves and do not approve at all. Our mages are a touch hapless and every time we forge a booster we get whacked by a horror, do anything else and get attacked by a lesser horror (at least we can beat those pesky things off).

I can say that I am not a fan of Astral Corruption.

Lets hope Dedas can find us a replacement - because without one the game is going to become somewhat lame.

Valerius
May 16th, 2008, 01:47 PM
Sorry to hear that Dedas. I agree with Digress that it's important we get a replacement for Ulm (I also agree that AC is a pain). I'm going to delay hosting by a day to see if Dedas can find a replacement.

Also, I'm going to PM the admin password to Velusion. If you need any changes in the next couple of days please contact him.

Maybe you should delay hosting until Jazzepi is on deck with Ulm.

Valerius

Good idea, Digress. I just made the change so I'm delaying hosting by 24 hours. New hosting time is 19:50 GMT Friday. Jazzepi let me know if you need more time.

Also, I gave Jazzepi a summary of what I thought was the status of his diplomatic relations. But I don't know if that is out of date or what the specifics of Ulm's agreements are. It might be good if everyone PMed him to let him know of the terms of their agreements.

We have been attacked by the traitorous, poop headed, savages of Abysia! Apparently our 10 turn NAP must have gone up in a flash of fire and smoke. Never trust people born from a volcano to hold onto your diplomatic documents!

Hi, the new patch has turned my mod nation Tomb kings upside down. My recruitable mages and priests have all lost their magic paths, and there might be other bugs. Can we put the game on hold until an upgrade is made for this mod? Thanks.

SALE!

ULM IS HAVING A FIRE SALE ON LIGHTLESS LANTERNS. WE'RE SELLING THEM IN BULK FOR ONLY 2.5 GEMS PER LANTERN.

SALE!

Please contact us via PM to workout payment. We can definitely take forged items instead of gems, and might even lower the price a bit if you have the right kinds for us.

Sorry for staling repeatedly in the last little while. Messed up getting a turn in last week and them had a couple of computer/ISP issues over the last couple of days.

Have got home - have a functioning computer and should get those turns in more promptly.

PS: Is it just me or has Abysia gone and won the game - turns and turns ago http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

PPS: And Oceania has done bugger all to stop Abysia winning http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/Sick.gif

PPPS: Is anyone running Ubuntu flavoured linux - my XP installation on my travelling laptop died and Lenovo Australia doesn't appear to sell recovery CDs for my aged and somewhat battered thinkpad. Forced me to install Ubuntu just to get some work done - it appears to work wonderfully well (other than absolutely flogging my graphics card).

My apologies again.

I am impressed that it got my laptop back up quickly without any issues at all. The only functionality missing in the distribution is support for the first generation hardware security chip in my low volume Thinkpad model (a fairly "boutique" security solution - not sure that many other manufacturers used it).

And its pretty zippy compared to XP (at least on my machine) even when it appears to be loaded with some fluff that I will never use.

Velusion - I will concede when I burn through all my mages - masses of criminally under-equipped thugs will carry Oceania still further inland - at least for a bit longer.

Has the Tomb Kings issue been sorted out ?

LoloMo
June 4th, 2008, 07:40 AM
Llamabeast couldn't find what was causing the bug. A new game with the same mod didn't cause any problems. He suggests doing another turn and see if the bug dissappears. I'll submit my turn in a few minutes.

Valerius
June 7th, 2008, 02:59 PM
Ok, I've delayed hosting by 48 hours. I'll keep extending that until the problem is resolved.

Velusion, sorry about the stale. When the game is resumed I'll message everyone to let them know.

llamabeast

Right, apologies for taking so long to get to this Tomb Kings issue.

It turns out to be a bug in the latest patch of Dominions - the game, it seems, can only handle so many units with magic (or something like that, bizarre as it seems), and now if you have more than a single small mod running units start falling off the end and lose their magic. This issue will be fixed in the next patch, but in the meantime there doesn't seem to be anything I can do. I tried replacing the Skaven mod with an empty mod to see if that would help, since there'd be far fewer modded casters - no luck. I tried copystatting other mage units on top of the TK units to see if that somehow worked differently - again, no luck.

So I guess it's up to you guys whether you wait for the next patch or just cope without recruitable mages for the Tomb Kings. At this late stage it's possible that you could survive without recruiting any more mages, but of course no-one but LoloMo could comment on that.

Bit of a bummer this, really.

LoloMo
June 11th, 2008, 03:58 AM
The next patch is too far away. Rather than hold up everyone, I'm willing to continue playing as is. I'll work on my turn later today.

So I assume that my unique summons will also be affected by the no path bug?

Velusion
June 11th, 2008, 09:07 PM
I'm surprised you want to continue.

I'm actually going to have to resign - I have too much other stuff going on and the work/fun ratio of the later turns are starting to weigh more on the "work" side.

If someone wants to jump in and take over my position I'll be glad to give it over... otherwise I'm going to put Abysia on AI after this turn.

Digress
June 11th, 2008, 10:56 PM
I am quite happy to proclaim Velusion the very probable winner of this one.

I have discovered how much I detest Oceania (a great deal) and Astral Corruption (especially when you strip your S9 pretender of gems for Returning before getting her to cast a gem heavy spell).

Whenever my pretender is called back she is attacked by a Doom Horror - the amount of horror marking that can get laid down on a sacred statue is pretty scary.

I will play on as long as others are willing too.

Jazzepi

I was a little disappointed by the situation Dedas left Ulm in. I thought he would have forged all of his smiths dwarven boots, unfortunately he did not!

I would prefer to quit this game if possible. If people want to continue, I guess we could do so, but my preference would be to drop out.

Jazzepi

Dedas
June 12th, 2008, 02:20 AM
Sorry Jazzepi. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Astral corruption combined with constant wars and poor research at the time made dwarven boots low priority. I had to shift to intense lightless lantern spamming so to not be left behind. I managed pretty well for a while though, destroying two and a half nation.

It was a very educational game for me.

Valerius

I am also willing to end the game. What say you, LoloMo?

LoloMo
