Nice map! I'm in.
Could we modify the victory condition and raise the 33% VP needed or at least make all of the VP provinces fortresses?
I played a game once with 40% VP (no capital) and the game has ended very soon because nations with teleport magic can jump into most of VP provinces and win (angels, bless commanders, etc).
And its a myth that most of people automacally build fortresses on the VP provinces (and not only newbs do this) and they are way to underprotected without!

Hi Calmon:
As a general rule, I try to set things up so that games are likely to end between turn 65 - 90. If other players think the % should be a bit higher, then maybe I'll change it. My hope is by having 36 VP provinces (compared to only 18) that it will be a bit harder to do the old teleport trick.
Pasha
calmon
February 4th, 2008, 09:15 AM
I would be fine with 33% when we use a rule like "you have to keep the provinces for 3 linked full turns" before it counts as a vicotry.
Well but this condition would need a manual process http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
ano
February 4th, 2008, 10:03 AM
I definitely agree with Calmon. Such rule would be good and it can be easily traced using score graphs. Game victory condition may be whatever and the winner will be declared by the host who traces the graph.

I'd prefer keeping the original victory condition, with only the percentage changing if people want. "Keep and hold 3 turns" is a recipe for a too-long game. Now that we've all read this thread, we should all know to fortify the VPs and prevent sneak attack surprise wins.

djo
February 4th, 2008, 07:44 PM
I don't think anyone is saying that fortifying VPs would be either forbidden or mandatory, just that you have to know that if you don't fortify, it increases the risk of the game suddenly, unexpectedly ending.
PashaDawg
February 4th, 2008, 07:58 PM
Ok. All of the game slots are full. The next step is to assign players (and for me to tweak the scenario to add the VP provinces, which I will do before I know what nation I am playing).
If you have not sent me 5 choices, please do so.
Please send me an email, if I don't already have your email address. My email is pashadawg [at] gmail *dot* com Please include "Alexander" in the subject line for my email filter.

I am reluctant to have a victory condition that requires players to count turns, etc. We could tweak the % necessary to win, maybe to 40%.
We could also explore whether cumulative VP's would be good (although, it is tricky to figure out the right # for cumulative VP's, at least for me with my terrible math skills). We could also have no VP's and strictly require a certain % of total provinces (but I like VP's).
Let's wait until Tuesday night (Boston time) before making the final decision on the victory condition, so players can discuss further. (And, we should not stray too far from the original proposed VP condition.)
Pasha

If a province with VP has a fort that VP is inside the fort or just inside the province?
PashaDawg
February 4th, 2008, 08:12 PM
You have to take over the fort to get the VP. Thus, it is important for wise players to build forts on their VP provinces.
Jurri
February 5th, 2008, 02:39 AM
I'm with Pasha, counting turns is a hassle. The original proposal sounds plenty challenging to me, and I don't see a problem in players snatching wins with teleporters or whatnot. In fact, I like the additional logistical challenge where you don't have anything for granted and need to seriously weigh whether to invest in defense or in offense: with capital VPs, you already have lots of mages and a strong fort to defend your VP.
Cumulative VPs would be fun, but it would be quite the hassle to switch to that at this point given that I understand a lot of players don't like them and might jump ship.
In general, I prefer games that have clearly defined and moderately easy to achieve victory conditions. That way they won't drag too long into the boring and time-intensive endgame.
calmon
February 5th, 2008, 07:17 PM
Ok, if we stay with only 12 VP i'll pass in joining this.
I mean this is just too fast for most of nations and so its nothing more than a gamble for a super fast nation.
djo
February 5th, 2008, 07:43 PM
How many turns' length game do you consider "too fast"?
calmon
February 5th, 2008, 07:52 PM
I don't think it last till turn 50 and there is a good chance for not seeing the imprisoned pretenders (~36 turns).
PashaDawg
February 5th, 2008, 07:53 PM
Obviously, this is a matter of taste, Calmon, and it would be great if you played. What if the setting was 14 VP provs? Would that still be too fast? After all, even 33% would mean that a player would essentially need to control 1/3 of the map in order to win.
calmon
February 5th, 2008, 08:31 PM
You don't need to control 33% of the map to get 33% of the VPs and thats the main problem i have. For example nations like caelum (fly) the midgard (stealth) can easily jump deep in enemy lands and surpise attack the VP provinces (Sure you still need a good early game).
And like i said before you don't get any special bonus to fortify your low pop VP provinces and even i do it i'm sure many other don't. I've my experiences with this: http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/threads/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=474486&page=&view=&sb=5&o =&fpart=1&vc=1
At the end only a few provinces were protected by fortresses and the winner got ~60% VPs at the end (40% was needed) and all this in 1 single turn. He had only a fraction (2 or 3 VPs) of this a turn before. He won with a massive angel teleport attack. Without some special nation features you're more an oberserver in such a game.
Thats why i dislike non-capital-VP games and maybe i should have think about before joining but to my defence i asked to change the victory condition http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif.
What do you think about 40% province ownership as win condition?
djo
February 5th, 2008, 08:55 PM
I read the end of that thread, very interesting. (Side note: I like reading about people's tactics after the end of games, since I rarely survive to the end game myself.)
I would be happy to play with either the original VP condition or some % of provinces (30-40% range). If we stick with VPs, though, everyone should be aware that the surprise win has to be defended against.
PashaDawg
February 5th, 2008, 10:59 PM
Ok. I think 40% is fine. That would be 15 VP provinces to win. Unless a player has strong concerns with that, let's use that victory condition.
PashaDawg
February 6th, 2008, 12:38 AM
I have updated the scenario file to add the VP's. It is attached to the first post in this thread. While I think the VP placement is satisfactory, if anyone thinks any are wildly unfair, please let me know.

Please get me your choices by Wednesday.
Jurri
February 6th, 2008, 12:59 AM
Ahem, Calmon's saying that he'd prefer 40% of provinces, not VPs. Me, I don't like victory conditions based on provinces, since you can't protect your provinces by building forts the way you can your VPs. So a province-based victory condition is even more vulnerable to sneaky/flying/teleport/remote summon attacks, with no feasible counters available.
Also, 40% of Alexander is, what, 116 provinces? Even with a rather handsome 30-province grab at the end you'd need to run an empire of 60+ provinces for who knows how many turns... Not something I think is fun. Victory Points are great in that you can capture the necessary points in a much shorter time-frame (even without any sneaky teleport-grabs) and thus can ideally skip the mind-numbing end game shuffle.
Wokeye
February 6th, 2008, 04:57 AM
40% of VPs sounds good. Lets do it.
PashaDawg
February 6th, 2008, 09:11 AM
Ok. We'll use the 40% VP victory condition. That will be 15 VP's to win (up from 12). I have placed the VP's on the scenario. None of them are in underwater.

Here are the nation assignments:
Abysia - Wokeye
Agartha - DryaUnda
Arco - Don Corazon
Atlantis - Don_Seba
Bogarus - Jurri
Caelum - Lolomo
C'Tis - Stelteck
Jomon - Aristander

Marignon - Pasha
Mictlan - Ano
Midgard - Calmon
Pan - djo
Patala - Klagrok
Pythium - Baalz
Tien Chi - Drake49
Ulm - Dedas
Utgard - Baldr
I'd like to get the game started on Sunday night. Please email me your pretender files by Sunday afternoon.
Please password protect your pretenders, because sometimes I accidentally hit the wrong nation when trying to play my own turn. If your turn is not password protected, then it opens up, and I have to try to close it without seeing anything that matters. I will have a master password that will allow me to turn a player AI or assign a replacement player if someone disappears.
Don't forget that we are not using any mods for this game.
Please always include "Alexander" in the subject line of all emails to me about this game. I use an email filter, and it helps me notice player turns, etc.
If you have any questions, please let me know.
Thanks.

I hope we'll meet in some other game, Jurri. As for the "graphs" I just wish the players in this game not to waste time and power fighting each other but to confront you together instead, because it may appear too late to do in the nearest 15-20 turns.

Osseric of Arco, do you wish to worship Amanozako? I can see by your attack on the Crystal Citadel that YOU DO NOT.
Be warned it is a great sin against Amanozako to send Elephants to stomp his servants and yet I see that you have done so. It is a sin too, to scorn Him; but you have done this also. And it is a GREAT sin in His eyes to seek to use His secrets in any way other than in His service - AND THIS TOO, YOU WOULD DO!

The Crystal Palace happens to be built upon the seasonal breeding grounds of the Arcosphalean Elephant, Pachydermus Horribilis, which is why the beasts are constantly mounting the statue of Amanozako. Rather than letting your pretender suffer this indignity, we your kind neighbors, would like to repossess the Crystal Palace and restore it to its native habitat.

Yes, you are correct PashaDawg. Except there is one important difference.
My Arco elephants in Epotara break morale and trample my own units. Don Corazon's pesky pachyderms defy fire spells, paralyzing blowguns, and early thugs to squish my heavy infantry.
Rest assured that the Crystal Citadel shall be free of "Pachydermus Horribills" and their BLASPHEMOUS breading rites as soon as the stars are right.

Aristander my friend - the problem is the statues of Amanozako bear an uncanny similarity to the Arcosphalean female elephant in full heat. This incites the male bulls to near berserk morale and has led to many stains on your holy statues.
Rest assured, we shall fix the problem once we have gained control of the province. Fellow pretenders, even our foes, deserve more respect than this...

Survivors report Kenji descended from the sky right into the middle of the Arcosephalean army, his blades whirring in a blur of amazing swordsmanship, which lasted about three seconds before he was impaled by a Cardace spear.
Jomon's retribution was furious as they unleashed all manner of sorcerous elements on Arcos, leading to a complete route. The elephants in particular have been traumatized.

Jomon’s limited interest in the arts and literature makes it understandable as to why you have not read the Arocsephalean epic known as the Ossericiad (standard reading in most classrooms in Alexander). It tells the tale of how the hero Osseric ascended to the heavens, imprisoning the evil Amanozako in a tomb of petrified elephant dung that floats miles above the earth and looks very similar to the moon.
At any rate, Osseric is still walking around enjoying the freedom of being awake and slaughtering mortals as you can see from the Hall of Fame. Amonozako is still a twinkle in the sky and by the time he shows up, we shall see if Osseric is still merciful enough to simply imprison him…

On the northern front, the elephant breeding grounds have been restored and the elephants are back to their daily rituals with the statues of Amonozako. Even though everyone forgotten, in the black forest, in the great keeps of stone, the proud people of Ulm still dwells. Sieged by various armies from various nations for countless days, the war never ends. Behind the city walls life still goes on with daily rations being delivered from sacks that never empties. Research is made in the deep dungeons by scholars like Boethius the great.
Will the Ulmish people ever be set free or will the barbarian league wipe them from the face of the known world? Some Ulmians hope that the enemy will some day tire of sieging and let them live in peace. Some still hope that the glorious 7th legion from ancient Arcoscephale will save them. Some that the scholars will invent a magic weapon to crush the enemy. Most, however, just drown their sorrows in beer.

Great Khan Huo has issued the following response:
Calling the Hoard, one of the mightiest mortal land armies in the world a 'raiding party' is typical of the 'civilized' nation of Arco's arrogance towards the Barbarian Kings. This began when Arco attacked the Hoard without warning, and compounded the insult by not inflicting ANY damage with their surprise attack. At least the insults of Arco against the Barbarian Kings will soon end.
Out of character, Arco made a number of mistakes this game that are typically made by players that are not putting enough time in their turns... and Arco was indeed in two end-games. Arco spent little time on this game, and with it over, is now free to focus on his new game. Instead of splitting time and playing several games, badly. Only very experienced playes can deal with multiple end-games at once without spending alot of time, and sometimes not even them.
PS:
I am new to this game, but not games in general. I've played others, thought this is the most impressively detailed. And I don't think bad choices should be eliminated.
You know what "balance" is? The inability to make mistakes.
DonCorazon

I am not sure I understand the point of your post.
I am playing in a number of games at different stages and doing well in most. Just because I am on my way out in Alexander doesn’t mean I am “not putting enough time in my turns” or am “splitting time and playing several games, badly”. At least two other players went out before me – does that mean they weren’t putting enough time into their turns?
I actually have put time into trying to make this game entertaining / engaging with forum posts despite some strategic mistakes, such as trying to help Ulm while engaged in a war with Jomon.
That decision wasn’t a rash one, but rather based on a good relationship with Ulm, and the fear of letting TC take Ulm unchecked. It turned out Ulm was much weaker than I expected, put up no fight, and it turned out to be a bad move. But it wasn’t made thoughtlessly.
Now Caelum has ended its NAP and with me, I am still fighting Jomon, Ulm has fallen, and TC has a huge horde of barbarian cavalry, there is really little hope.
Note: Having the troops move out of my fort this last turn was certainly a mistake and I am not sure how it happened. It may have been accidentally clicking on a province to check troops/details without realizing all my troops were highlighted. That was a mistake (first time it has happened to me) but does not mean I have not taken this game seriously.
I am not sure I interpreted your post correctly (and if I didn’t then excuse me), but I don’t really appreciate your comments.

Well, if you are offended by Great Khan Huo, please understand that he impaled his last 'social graces' teacher and we have yet to find a replacement.
However, my comments that you seem distracted in this game, maybe because of other games, or maybe because of Real Life, well I believe that is what happened. This has happened, at one time or another, to half or more of the board. I don't really see how this is an insult. You used good tactics one battle, next battle no tactics.
The bottom of my post actually wasn't addressed to you but a general comment that popped out of my head right then. Sorry if it offended you, rereading it, it doesn't make much sense in context.
Anyway, if you still upset about the MoD cheat, well I think I can agree with everyone else and say it is a cheat, and I'm sorry it happened to you.

No worries Drake. But FYI this is the line that bugged me
Drake49 said:
Arco spent little time on this game...
because that is not true.
But it is all good http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
FYI the reason there were no tactics in that last battle was because those troops were not intended to leave my capital - that is what I meant when I said earlier that I made a mistake - not sure how the little rebels escaped but my intention was to have them defend the castle and thus no battlefield placement was necessary at the moment. I must have accidentally clicked on something that caused them to move. Even worse, it landed them in the path of your Horde.
That was a fatal error. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif
As for the MoD incident, the only thing sad about that was a player quit. I am certainly not mad about it and never was - my reaction to the move was shock. If you go back to my original post, you'll see I was trying to figure out if that was a real strategy, and if so how it could be countered because my initial impression was it was going to wipe me out every time.
Finally, as for trying to incite the world against Great Khan Huo, that is just DC-style diplomacy. The greatest trick the Devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist.
And like that... he is gone.

ROFL I saw that scout on the Atlantis castle.
"err...sir...there's a pangaean scout outside, claiming that he's besieging our castle."
"One guy, and he's a scout???"
"yes sir - he's got some balls, sir"
"Right! Trident throwing practice, on the walls in 5 minutes!!"

Hi All:
It appears that Pythium went AI about one or two turns ago. (I have just sent a PM to Baalz to make sure it was intentional.) Given that they are one of the biggest empires on the map, it might be better to have a human play them. I can easily use a back up to take us back to turn 38 or 37 and find a sub.
What would players prefer? Keep going or go back?
Pasha
Baalz
April 27th, 2008, 10:09 AM
Oh, sorry I didn't mention anything, but the score graphs are very misleading in this case and I'd recommend not sticking anybody with Pythium. Most of the territories left are underwater with no way to recruit more troops and I'm being heavily attacked by two other of the leading nations. Additionally I made some pretty bad choices in my nation build (taking sloth and trying to use mostly dual blessed hydras doesn't work too well past indie expansion...well except in kicking a non-water nation out the water).
If you do decide to try and get a sub let me know so I can tell them the password.
PashaDawg
April 27th, 2008, 11:42 PM
Okay. No player expressed a strong preference to find a human sub for Pythium, and a few preferred to keep going as is. So, we'll just keep going.

I have not received turns from:

I am going out of town. So, I suggest that the deadline be Sunday night.

Hello:
Karnoza is off on vacation for about 2 weeks, and he will likely not be able to play much while away. Given that his position in the game is substantial and that we are only playing 2 turns per week, I recommend that we put the game on a hold status until he returns. If he is able to get turns in, then I will host.
If someone has any objections, please let me know. The alternative is to turn him AI, which would be bad.
Thanks.

I think that deadline is not needed already ;)
As a permanent side watcher and sometimes adviser, I'd like to congratulate Karnoza on his first (and very big) victory here. It was a good game indeed and the opposition was really strong. He was doing a terrific micromanagement job during the last turns and, I know, it's very, very hard and time consuming to reign such a huge empire. I was beginning his game for Mictlan and I'm really glad that Karnoza managed to to lead these bloodthirsty nation to victory.
Also, I was very much impressed by the empire of T'ien-Chi. Drake ruled them very well and if this game had another victory condition, who knows, how it would end.
