Game Type: TCP/IP (static server)
Speed: 24 hours per host for the first 18 turns moving to 48 hours per host after that. Quickhost enabled.
Era: Middle
Players: 22 (all) – or however many we get.
Start: The game will start 48-72 hours after nations are posted or when all nations are uploaded.

Map: 15 provinces per player pre-generated map http://www.arsnotoria.net/dominions3/priori.zip .
Victory Conditions: 50% provinces controlled for 3 consecutive turns, or the surrendering of all other players.
Hall of Fame: 15
Renaming: On
Everything Else: Defaults
Length: If you aren’t eliminated this game might last 6+ Months. Be prepared!
Mods: Big-Game v1.1 Mod here: http://arsnotoria.net/dominions3/bg11.zip

IP: arsnotoria.net
Port: 10444

Sign-ups are on a first-come first-serve basis as far as nation selection. Plays of all levels of experience are welcome to join.

Make sure and send me your email address if you would like to be included in email notifications when turns host.

Quickhost will be enabled. The first 18 turns will be set to have a 24 hour autohost – so expect to do at least a turn a day for the first few weeks. After that the timer will increase to 48 hours though it is hoped that players will normally still be able to play every 24 hours, with the occasional missed day. As turns take longer in late game this might increase further. As players get eliminated we can be more flexible with extensions and extended absences, but not in the first couple weeks.

The map will be tweaked to ensure (hopefully) that all players that start on land have at least four land neighbors and all players that start at sea have 3 sea neighbors. All the major seas are connected so that separated sea provinces connect to each other across straits (hence all seas that look like they should be connected are linked). There will be between 10-13 water provinces per water nation. All the larger landmasses are linked across the straits as well. The map will be available once we know who is playing.

Players who wish to surrender (resign) should simply let me know so we can find a replacement or turn the nation to computer controlled. If you will be unavailable for longer than a few days please let me know. Failing to do you turn twice a in a row without letting us know will get you put on AI. If I think you are missing too many turns (e.g. 3 out of the last 6) I will put you on AI. Once (*ahem* - If) I am eliminated I’ll rely on the remaining players to tell me when something needs done with the game.

General rules to follow in my games can be found here:
http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/threads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=d3maars&Number=507308&fpar t=&PHPSESSID=
I recommend you read them if you haven’t already.

House Rules: There are specific endgame related issues that apply to larger Dom3 games that I have come to dread. There will be a simple Big Game Mod (v1.1) that will be used for this game that will tweak a few end-game aspects.

These changes are not up for debate in this thread.

Big Game Mod Changes:
Arcane Nexus will cost 300 Astral Pearls to cast
Clam of Pearls will require a path 2 (instead of 1) in Nature Magic (Water will stay the same). This will increase the cost to forge.
Fever Fetishes will require a path 2 (instead of 1) in Fire Magic (Nature will stay the same). This will increase the cost to forge.
(New in v1.1)Blood Stone will require a path 3 (instead of 2) in Earth Magic (Blood will stay the same). This will increase the cost to forge.

If we get less than 14 people we will not use this Mod.

Just in case you were curious..

The island start position in the far west is stupendously lame.. I'm talking 5 provinces to expand into until you meet your neighbor to the south who blocks all growth kind of lame.. Really really lame!

Rathar
February 23rd, 2008, 07:59 PM
I am somewhat foolish.. Ok.. Rather foolish in that I did not notice a way off of my island. I hate not noticing things that are staring me in the face.

Unfortunately I based my strategy upon this lack of a way to get off the island and felt forced to attack my neighbor in order to grow. Ah well, many wars start with such foolishness in intelligence (unlike a certain president, we have fired our C.I.A. director)

We declare war upon Pythium.

Carrion crows cawed loudly from their perches on the statues of once living snake worshipers. Their brethren plucked the eyes and entrails from the hundreds of twisted corpses below. Noisome hydra bodies and broken centaurs littered the now calm again valley. A few surviving horse-men surveyed the scene in the company of their cloven hoofed allies then turned and sped away to less harrowing spectacles.

Nice battle. I am unsure as of yet who got the Pyhrric end of the stick there..

Rather than the worm itself, you fell to the silent preaching of his most trusted consort.

The wyrm diverted your attention, while my prophetised consort did the real kill. I was kinda nervous your patrollers would find her, that would have been the end of my god too who was already badly afflicted.

Well fought, though. It was a close one.

And three turns ago your main army lost it's only leader capable of moving them all around due to it's hiding in the hydra's gas clouds. The leader was initially well placed but instead of remaining behind his infantry screen he ran all the way across the field to the hydras. This allowed me to pin and destroy the army. Said hydras also gassed a good 20-30 of your guys in the process. This turn to add insult to injury, Bogus and Co. attacked a province of yours.

Well this is turning out to be an interesting game. It appears awfully crowded in my area, I encountered 4 nations within the first 6 turns - Mictlan, C'tis, Jotunheim, and Tien Chi, all within 3 to 4 provinces (capital to capital it seems). Then Mictlan decides to storm my castle, thinking me to be easy pickings, or so I have to guess. His Dragon God fell as my force stormed from the castle walls into the field. But lo and behold while pushing back Mictlan I see the Wyrm God of C'tis taking a few of my outer territories. I asked him to look elsewhere for his expansion, but to no response. I started to venture forth against Mictlan, taking out another of his large (and hopefully last or few left) armies, only to see yet another God (of Jotunheim) heading towards my capital.

If anybody is looking to support me in my efforts against Jotunheim, I'm pretty sure I can take out his wounded god if he attacks my capital. Any death gems you would be willing to spare to weaken his army or make him suffer more, donations are welcome. Who knows, maybe I'll be 2 for 2 in taking out fellow gods. Or not.

Ermor declares its intentions to rid the world of the filthy Abysians!

Earlier in this game, I made an offer to Abysia to exchange a specific province of mine for one of his. Abysia decided to...'translate' my offer into an invitation to conquer my province from me. When I clarified the point, I was ignored.

Ermor is patient, and the time has come for vengeance.

Abysia's greed probably violates the terms of our NAP, so that I need not give warning. But the Lord of the Dead will honour the terms of the NAP with this unworthy foe. It is currently Turn 18, with 36 hours to go. On turn 21, I will give the orders for my minions to invade.

Details, man, details! ; )

March 2nd, 2008, 07:50 PM
A large mixed host of Satyrs, horse-men and shrieking Maeneds appeared over the crest of the low hill. Backed up by a jumbled mob of archer types and Dryads they poured into the valley below.

Awaiting them in fine order were a disciplined group of Retarii, Emerald guards and Principes. They in turn were stiffened by a full squadron of Arch-Theurgs and the lord of the snake-men himself.

Initial prayers were sent and blessings made the very sky shine with divine power. The Arch-Theurgs formed a single mind with their communions and began to rain paralysis upon the horse-men who had made contact with the Retarii and standard bearers of the legion. The frozen horse-men were easy pickings for nets, swords and pikes, but the unfrozen reaped an awful toll upon the newly freed slaves and their companions. Terrible though the price was the snake-mens right flank held against the onslaught.

The Snakes left flank was an even stiffer barrier to the nature lovers. The screaming female horde hurled themselves upon the extremely well armored Emerald Guards and Principes knowing that their individual chances were poor but hoping to tire out their opponents by forcing them to hack and thrust until they collapsed from exhaustion. A large group of Satyr javelinists hurled their missiles to little effect into the armored group but here and there men did fall with crude weapons protruding from their armor.

The Dryads sensing that here perhaps their songs of fear and fatigue would win them the day raced to the fore and began to sing their withering lullaby's causing brave snake worshippers to quail, their arms as lead. The exhausted fell in ones and twos to the nails of the women and the spears of the Satyrs but this flank did hold! The god of the snake worshippers, though crippled, made his rocky way through the middle of the battle trampling wailing women with his brand new boots and provided the force which finally broke the Pangean horde..

Fortunately for the Pangeans their speed in advance was matched by their speed in retreat and many fled the field vowing vengeance another day.

Pangean initial armies= 200+ with 10 leaders
Pythium fielded a bare 90 with 18 battle ready mages.

Results?

80 pangeans and their leaders fled the field while the snake-men held the ground with a bare 30 men but all of the mages survived. Oh and the snakemen cyclops took a vast 3 hps out of his 168.

Detailed enough?! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Indy neighbouring your capital? Wtf?!? ; )

Uhm...I just took an indy by your capital. You have a ton of provinces on the map; why was that one left indy?!? And there's another one right after it that I can attack!

I would be amenable to trading the one I have conquered for another province of yours, in the interests of peace between us--although your lack of response to my previous NAP offer bodes...ill. ; )

Vitae, Ermor, Priori game.

You know, you're right, I can clearly see how you could interpret that to mean I said you can have the province 'back'.

Yes.

IIRC, the only problems occur when connecting to an unpatched server with a patched client.
A patched server should refuse an unpatched client.

I am a little curious as to how somethings will work out, since I submitted a 3.14 turn to be processed on 3.15
Man got a few changes:
Avalon witch changes: Crones strat move 1, mother and daughter random nature/air.

Will any mothers or daughter I recruit this turn get the randoms? What if there was a cost change?
I was moving a Crone 2 provinces. Will she make it?

Foodstamp: I did get the PM and will be taking your advice as soon as someone can get into position. Thanks for the warning.

There. That should be suitably mysterious.

To anyone else whose PMs I'm ignoring: sorry. I'm really busy at work these days. Random comments on the forum can be written while things are compiling and the like, but I don't like to do diplomacy or planning without the game in front of me so things tend to slip my mind. Silence is not a sign I'm planning a doublecross or invasion. Just that I've forgotten I haven't already replied.

thejeff
March 6th, 2008, 09:59 PM
It seemed to work out as I'd expected.

The Crone moved 2 provinces and now has a move of 1: The movement orders and destinations are determined by the 3.14 client.

The Mother I recruited had the random: The order had been given, but the actual unit got created on the server.

No cost changes so I don't know how that would play out.

For those who are interested, the Mother and Daughter each get a 100% AN random instead of one of their previous Nature paths. So no more total paths, but a bit more flexibility. Still a very limited nation magically.

March 6th, 2008, 10:15 PM

Mo-hi-hai, alchemist of the five elements, carefully stepped through the gate. Entering the courtyard currently substituting as the lair of Fu-tsang Lung, the great Tien Chi dragon of order and luck.

As always, Mo-hi-hai was awestruck by the gods otherwordly beauty. The two magnificent heads resting peacefully on the long silvery body were like symbols of ancient wisdom and divine love. The god spoke:

- Mo-hi-hai, my child. I feel much better since your care for me began. I beleive I shall soon be prepared to leave, yes?

- Father, your wounds are indeed mending with divine speed.

The dragon nodded slowly.

- Thanks to your loving devotion that is. And you shall be properly rewarded. Go home to your wife now, tonight shall your broken love be mended. When her belly grows you must bring her before me, so that I may bless your unborn son.

Tithonos, his muscles bulging hugely, wiped his brow as he watched his goddess battle with the last follower of the snakemen faith, the Lord Benim himself. Maeneds yelled their approval even as they were trampled absentmindedly beneath the great Cyclops's boots. The towering figure finally fell, stunned by the poisons of Stheno and exhausted by his futile but heroic efforts to sustain the cause of Pythium.

Pondering this scene caused the horse-man to realize that but for the will of the Creators and luck that would have been himself falling before the hordes. He hoped that the luck which enabled this victory would continue but knew that to rely upon it would invite disaster.

"What new vistas await me in the future? Shall the forests triumph in the end and become an unbroken green vista or shall all the lands groan beneath the bite of the plow and the stupidity of the herded animal?" With these thoughts Tithonos strode through the now unguarded gates of the Great City.

Pangaea, you owe me 50 Nature gems!

I was surprised you hadn't gotten it up already, but thought since you hadn't, if I could, maybe I could hold it long enough to make some profit.

Meanwhile, the war against Jotunheim goes slowly. He's been driven back to his capital and can only hold out thanks to his pretender. My brave troops fall like chaff before the Son of Neifel, though the longbowmen wounded him again in this battle. Back and forth it goes. He sallies forth, takes a province, I besiege his capital. He returns, drives us out and I retake the other province. Slowly he loses irreplaceable giants, as I send ever more fresh troops to the battle.

Much, much nastier was the loss of most of an entire army up north, trying to take out an Agarthan castle. Summoned Agarthan statues blocking the only, narrow entrance = *BAD THING*. Abysia's battle was a lucky shot. Agartha's battle was a bloody nose. ; )

As I said, I'm not as powerful as I look on the graphs.

I'm already recovering, and I'll get you in the end, Agartha! But just to add insult to injury, my only random events this turn--despite *Luck 3*--were the loss of a temple and the loss of 200 gold. I think I'm going to go sit in the corner and sulk for a while...; )

He was tired, very tired was Tithonos as he had just worked a long shift at the aluminum plant where they manufacture airplane parts. But he did not work at making pieces of airplanes, no he didn't..

To be continued.. (in a few days when I am less utterly exhausted and done at the aluminium plant)

Surrender now Oceania, and we will agree to only lobotomize half of your remaining peoples. Refuse this generous offer, then all of your troops will become R'lyean brain fodder.

The hooves of the dead trample the east of the world. The few Agarthans remaining make a last stand deep in their cave fortress. The Vanir fight valiantly, but the hundreds they return to their rest seem to be replaced without pause.

The tide of death must be stopped before it is too late. The Lord of Avalon declares his Pact with Ermor ended and calls on the other nations of the world to help stop him now.

Argarthans do not eat. It is both a blessing and a curse, Sargon muses. At this point it is only prolonging their death. Their cave fort defenses were breached long ago by the hoards of unliving just outside. The constant cacophony of bone scraping stone drowns out all conversation. Each is left to his own nightmarish thoughts. No one has any real nightmares any more, because no one has slept in weeks. The noise combined with the threat of imminent invasion of undead is enough to keep even the humans without sleep. Sargon is no different. His huge pale body is slumped against his favorite setting stone. It offers him no comfort. His body is beginning to show signs of decrepitude.
Sargon ponders the end of his race. He wishes for a moment that Argarthans could weep like humans do. He angrily banishes the thought. It is their fault! How could my people be out bred by these awful smelling monkeys? Perhaps our demise is for the best. First we accept them into our caverns, the greedy little primates. But now we have accepted one as the true god. Wretched. She is only slightly older than me!, Sargon rages.

....more to come?

Will the dead ever know peace?

So be it. We now add Man to our ever-growing list our enemies. It is currently Turn 48. On Turn 51, we shall give the orders to our minions so that the war begins on Turn 52.

The forest loving peoples of Pangea have heard of the atrocities being committed against the great forests of the east and declare themselves to also be at a state of war with the hordes of ancient Ermor.

Sadly, the noble Spider-lovers of Machaka are between us so the aid we can render is but slight at the moment. Although if folks care to throw piles of earth gems our way we can cast quite a few economically devastating rituals.. (ooc I've site searched the bejeezus out of things and while we have an adequate income of nearly every other gem our earth income is a measly 3..)

Ermor is nearing a point where the sheer mass of troops, gems and mages will allow them to make an end grab for provinces and thus clinch victory.

We call on all able bodied nations to act now before it is too late.

Then you can kill me next!

The capitol of Oceania now belongs to R'lyeh. It should not be too long until their last rebel forces are defeated. We just hope it is not too late to save the topworlders. Beware. We could come up out of the sea anywhere.

I hate to do this when I've just expanded the war, but I'm going to be away from computers for a long weekend. From Friday morning to Monday night.

I can try to find a sub, but since that'll likely be the opening battle of my new war, I'd hate to miss it.
Would people be okay with a delay? It should only be a turn or two.

I hope to be back in time to play Monday night, but if it's too late I might not be able to do it until after work on Tuesday.

I don't have any problems with a delay, and your potential enemy is normally the last one to finish his turn, so I don't think anyone will mind.

IndyPendant
April 9th, 2008, 12:02 AM
*Ahem.*

Second-last or better, most turns. This turn it's Ulm that's last, last turn it was Man. I was really only dead last for a brief stretch in the middle, iirc before we went to a 48-hour schedule. ; )

That having been said, I am going on a business trip this Saturday. I should still be able to get the turns in, but there's a chance I'll be too busy to keep to even a 48-hour shedule. I will need us to go on a 72-hour quickhost for two or three turns next week myself, unless there are severe objections.

Just in case, I think I'll be PMing Velusion about it now...

Ok, now I've gotten confused. Since I don't want to nag Velusion, what delay have you asked him for, IndyPendant?

Edit:
And now Velusion replies as I was typing that.
Hi, Velusion.

thejeff

Ermor has cast Gift of Health. Since Ermor is a land of death not of life, there can be only one reason. He seeks to raise and heal the ancient gods of Tartarus. This abomination must not be allowed.

Man can try to replace it or someone else can try to Dispel. I'd rather steal it, of course. I also have more Nature gems to put towards an attempt than I have Astral for Dispel. I'm willing to try on my own, but if he threw enough extra gems in, I won't be able to help much with a second attempt. Any support I can get will help.
I am not a death nation and have no mages near capable of summoning Tartarians, so it would be much less of a threat in my hands.

If people would rather donate to a Dispel, I can understand that. I could only donate a few gems to that, since my Astral income is miserable, and I'm sure someone has a better Astral caster than I do.

IndyPendant
April 9th, 2008, 06:11 PM
Heh. I haven't PM'd Velusion yet, after all. Since he is aware a delay requests are incoming, I can combine our requests into one PM for him on Friday if you would like.

..."Tartarians"? Vhat iss diss ting, "Tartarians"? I merely am trying to look out for my mages, who suffer from old age as well. After all, it's not like Well of Misery is anywhere near Tartarians... *cough*

Bump. Who has a large astral mage and is willing to dispel the gift of health?

Anyone?! Bueller? Buuueller?

Lingchih
April 10th, 2008, 04:35 PM
R'lyeh has no nature to spare, unfortunately. We would be willing to do the dispel, but I am sure someone else has a higher level Astral mage.

thejeff
April 10th, 2008, 04:45 PM
Yeah, it doesn't seem anyone wants to take me up on that offer. I'm not really surprised. I will reiterate it though:
I'm nowhere near Tartarians, so the biggest threat of GoH is not relevant. I will even promise to announce to the world before I summon any, if I ever do.

I'd try to just cast it myself, if I didn't think it would just get shot down in a couple turns.

If someone doesn't volunteer an astral mage soon, it'll have to be me or Rathar. I'd argue for me, because I'll be actively at war only with Ermor. Last time I saw, Pan was fighting Tien Chi.

As I said before, my astral income is pitiful and precious, so I could only spare a handful to the cause.

Rathar

Hmm for some reason which is either true or made up in the depths of my mind I seem to recall that Thejeff is in new zealand in which case friday (when he requested a delay) is Now for him and thus they need that delay asap.

heh heh you would post at the same time..

Nm then I guess you aren't gone yet!

Tithonos has forced a state of vassaldom upon Tien-Chi in which we returned most of our gains and are providing economic assistance to them in return for them agreeing to smile and nod as they plot sudden vengeance. 2 provinces closer to Ermor at any rate..

Loathe as I am to give my scheming web of enemies more time to plan my demise... ; ) I am leaving for my business trip tomorrow.

thejeff, if I understand you correctly, you will need the next turn delayed until Monday evening (call it a 4-day quickhost, just to be safe). Then I will need a 72-hour schedule for the next two turns, for a total of 3 turns delayed.

Does that work for you?

thejeff
April 10th, 2008, 09:42 PM
Works for me.
We could also just have him turn off the timer until we're back to a regular schedule. It might be simpler and I think the rest of us would keep up.

I've sent my pittance of Astral gems.

As for the publicity: it seemed sufficiently obvious that there was little point in concealment. And I couldn't face sending off separate messages to everyone, then trying to coordinate responses...
The PM system doesn't have any Send to Group or Reply All features does it?
