Some people asked for new newbie games, here's one.
Please only sign up if you're new to MP gaming here.

The setup:

Game version will be 3.14 with no mods. 48 hours quickhost.
Game age will be MA. Sign up with your preferred nation.
We'll use the map Primea, which is attached to this post. In case the map creator posts a fixed version, we'll use that one - I had to assign the province tags myself for this one.
We'll play on a networked server, you can upload/download your turns through the in-game interface.

I want at least 6 players to start the game, we can support up to 12 (in that case it'll get crowded). I'll wait for your applications until Wednesday, then we'll prepare the game so that we can start by the weekend. Come on, sign up!

Very well, I think we're able to play a nice game with this. Everybody who signed up here, you're accepted, please proceed to create your pretender gods. When you are done, then mail me the file from your newlords folder in the game's savegame directory to the following email address:
http://bannerbreak.com/banners/7/256/120342002943919622.gif

<font color="red">EDIT, Important:</font> make sure that you set a password for your pretender god. And include that password in the email for me, just as a precaution.

I'll start the game when all the gods are in. You'll get an email when the game starts. Your sending email address will get added to the game's email notification script. If you need any further help, search in the the forum or ask here.

Atlantis, I hope you are aware that there isn't too much sea in here. On the other hand, it's guaranteed to be yours.

My first newbie game ended like this, but people may choose to end the game sooner if the outcome seems clear.

No, this is a networked game. You play it through the game interface, or you can supply startup parameters to the game which let you connect instantly. In case you can't connect to the game at all you might be behind some zany firewall. Try connecting to valhalla.techno-mage.com port 4564 just for testing purposes, this is a currently running game.

So if i did understand well, we just have to connect to the address you'll give us every day to give our orders, and the turn will be validate every 48 hours ?
Maybe we can take 24 for the first turns, can't we ?

Cause i don't understand very well the "48 hours quickhost" term. Hope it's not a game in 48 hours ^^

Anyway it's a great chance to have that host, thank you.

Edit : concerning the firewall, i'm using one, plus a "routeur" ( don't know the english name, but the box which share the internet connection serve of firewall too ). I did'nt open any port and it seem i'm able to connect to that game so http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

48 hours is the time period that you have for handing in your turn orders after the turn hosted. If you don't upload your turn orders within that time, it will host regardless and you'll get a stale turn. quickhost means that as soon as all players have uploaded their turns, the game hosts. So usually the first turns take less than 24 hours, because there isn't really much to do and think about.

Firewalls are usually only used to restrict inbound traffic, which could be harmful to your network. Those won't be any trouble. Some people are on very restricted networks that limit outbound traffic, too, for example quite a few providers may filter out traffic known as P2P. Shouldn't be a problem. Some filter out ALL traffic except to a very limited number of ports that are allowed, like 80 for HTTP connections, 21 for FTP and 25 for SMTP mail, and nothing else. Company networks might have this for their employees.

Basically, each turn the host will wait up to 48 hours for everyone to play their turns. If everyone finishes sooner than that, it will automatically proceed to the next turn.

The game has started. Everybody should have received an email with the info for the game. If you have not, then please check your spam folder and add the sending address to your white list, or whatever makes your mail server not classify the turn notifications as spam. If you want to be removed from the turn notification at any time (presumably when you're out of the game at the latest), then please send an email back asking so or send me a PM, I don't keep track of who's defeated every turn.

Feel free to discuss the game openly here. Diplomacy is one of the strongest forces in the game, so make sure to get in contact with your neighbors, you might be winning an ally.

Strange, that should not happen. If you enter the host name in the game or as a parameter shouldn't matter at all.

Do NOT underestimate the independants. Especially do not try to rush independants with a lone pretender god without gear.

Ugh. I have improved the game scripts before hosting. I used to have to edit things everywhere, now I only need to update game name and port variables on top of the script. But it seems that I failed to remember doing so in this script. Thanks for reporting this, it is fixed it now!

I have a question, what's those crown around the map ? Never see something like this before even when i was testing primea. I thunk it's players position first but, there aren't 12 of them.

Anyway, i wish everyone good luck and fun for that first game http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif ( you see Caelum god is nice, remeber that, we're just little birdys, you won't hurt a little bird will ya ? )

Edit : wow ! an other question concerning the validations of turns. I ve just look at the result here, and i was'nt suppose to play my turn, i was planning to do that after lunch. Anyway i just use the commend "save and quit" and i saw that my turn was considering done ( on the internet page for primea game ). Is there a way ( for the next turn, those which need more time, to save our orders and don't validate our turn ? I hope i'm clear enought to be understood.

A 'Save and Exit' is treated the same as an 'End Turn'. In other words, it treats your turn as complete. However, you CAN go back in and make changes to the turn any time before the last person completes it. Right now we're waiting for Ulm, so if you get back in before he finishes you should be able to make some changes.

I am assuming that if you are in and making changes, the game will not host until you finish, even if Ulm signs on and completes his turn while you are 'working' on your corrections.

Ich posted elsewhere that it is best to download the turns and play 'offline'...I am not sure how to do this. Ich, could you give a brief explanation how to do this for us newbies? Or give us a thread where we can look it up?

They're called victory points. I haven't quite figured out how to start a game from the command line without having some of them in the game. If you conquer this province, it will raise the Dominion of your god by one (like temples).

If the last player hands in his turn orders then the server will host, regardless if there are other players connected or not. The server doesn't know you might still be preparing that turn.

Connect to the server, enter your password. Then your client will download the (new) turn file to your computer. When you then can see the server overview with the nation flags, immediately disconnect again. You can then prepare your turns offline via the "Play a local game" menu. When you are finished preparing the turn, connect again and your client will automatically upload the turn file. Do NOT connect again until you are completely done with preparing the turn.

Check your spam folder please. Hotmail is known to block the turn notifications as spam. Whitelist the sending address or whatever is needed to stop it from doing so, and tell the others how you did it - there are some other Hotmail users.

Hum, if this was the problem, I think that I wouldn't have received the mails about Rhoscrowther... and I did receive the mails about "primea has started". Furthermore my spam folder is empty.

I'll force a "whilelist" anyway to see if it helps.

As for how to do that :
- start msn.
- open your webmail screen.
- click on the "option" button on the top right.
- There is a list of options, the one you want should sound like "senders blocked and authorized" in the spam category.
- click on somthing that sounds like "authorized sender"
- enter the mail adress Ich gave you in the list.

And it's done.

The name will probably be quite different from the ones I gave since my the version of hotmail I use is "hotmail classic" (I don't have the "live" account) and in French. Therefore the "sounds like". http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

The Astrologer sighed...after several months without any indications of misfortune he had joined the army to help eradicate an Undead infestation. It was while he was gone that the Hurricane struck.

Now came the reports of the arrival of some hideous Sea Beast off the Arco coast. While sure that the local militia would soon see it off, he was beginning to think that he would need to go back to the Lab soon and recheck the stars. All needed to be well for the Awakening of his Goddess, but so far his tenure as Prophet was off to a very shaky start.

He reread the report from the capital:

"...yesterday, devouring several fisherman. It is Hideous and the Smell alone has caused the locals to abandon the waterfront. We have called out the Militia since we are very sure that it is not house broken..."

"This was the start of another boring day for Rhea. Since the rise of the king of plants and trees, she had been assigned to do some boring research. Soon other of her kind joined, but it didn't make it any easier. Interesting results came every few month, but nothing as great as the ancient tales.

No wars either, except news from afar, about the mighty Machaon and his war against barbarians and more barbarians. The territory they held didn't even have any value, it was just senseless massacre. They were just at the bad place at the bad time. Too bad for them. Rhea felt a bit sorry for them, but after all, the taste of the lord for women was well known throughout the lands, even if the half crazed women looked more attracted to him than he was to them.

But that day, that very boring day, everything changed. Rhea was called at the royal court. A magnificent place, the falling leaves of autumn giving it a golden beauty, unmatched in that part of the lands. The gossip of the royal court, the fearful face of the of the royal court women, and the crazy look in the centaur's eyes could only mean that something grave had happened.

Upon arrival, she was told the truth. She was to deliver a message to some barbarian in the North. Except those were not only barbarian, they pretended that there was another God !

Against her heart, she did as she was bidden, went to speak to the representative of this force that numbered hundreds and called itself Vanheim.
- We have no desire for war. Yet you trespass dangerously near to our lands. Should you not decide to move away, we will retaliate. Trydmire and Farseer mountains will be ours. Leave peacefully or face the consequences.

As she came back, tears flowed to Rhea's eyes. She didn't want war. But there was only one God. And around them, centaurs and minotaurs were getting ready to use the only way they knew to ensure that the King of plants and trees would be the only one left. Now, she could only hope that other ways would prevail."

The events described hereon are from the third, fourth, and fifth months of the pretender wars. As we are currently in a state of conflict, discussing the present state of affairs in such a way that enemy spies may read it would be imprudent.

Father Alverne was returning to Marignon City from campaign on the northern marches when the report came in. Originally a mere friar in the Holy Church, he took no small amount of pride in the fact that he was personally chosen by Flonne -- the Pillar that is Purity, &amp;c., &amp;c., Love Freak and Angel Trainee -- to lead the army and to serve as her personal prophet.

"The fir bolgs, sir! They are marching into Duvan!" the messenger announced.

A month prior, scouts on the Duvanian frontier had reported the fir bolg army camped on the plains of Jerib. Alverne had done nothing about it -- he had lost many troops securing Duvan and had to return to Marignon for reinforcements. Besides, he knew that Flonne, the Pillar that is Purity, &amp;c., &amp;c., Love Freak and Angel Trainee would never approve of wanton aggression, even though the fir bolgs, as the rumours had it, worshipped some foul death god.

But now the fir bolgs were approaching Marignon itself. Would they attempt siege of the great city? Continue their pillage of the northern provinces? Neither were acceptable, Alverne knew. He would have to attempt an attack.

Alverne looked sorrowfully over the army. It was a fine army in many ways. Dozens of crossbowmen, and even two knights of the royal guard. But the front line? Four pikes. "It'll have to do," thought Alverne.

"It didn't," Alverne murmured to himself days later as he laid dying on the fields of Duvan. "God save us all."

And as he drew his last breath, his prayer was answered. Before the walls of Marignon City approached thirty soldiers, led by a mercenary hero brandishing a sword aglow with enchanted fire. "I am Dante, sirs," the leader shouted to the gates, "and should you will it we shall serve you."

"A few month later, Rhea found herself relaxing in her home. Home ! Strange word for such a place, yet it had no other name. She had most of what she wanted now : relative peace, an interesting job (for a little more time, she was told).

The events of last months had been hectic at best, but somehow, it worked out fine. The strange men from the Vanheim nation left as she was moving in. And that province really was a treasure to behold : magnificent pines and trees and mountains that rivalled in beauty the forest where she was born.

As soon as she arrived, she was contacted by the local shamans... and they were waiting for her arrival. She took upon herself to start building a temple and a lab, only to have the order come a few days later. A few month later, the locals even build a fortress in her honor.

Truly, this was a magnificent place, blessed by ancient gods..."

Cyy Coth, king of atlantis was awakened by a knock on his shell.

- Yarr wazzups? He murmured irritably, for he had enjoyed a most pleasant dream about a young atlantess.

- Eze mass! The servant cried. - Aizz tel ya dem trollkin aahtsid, wasal ee dhoo?

Trolls outside? Cyy Coth flung the shell open and quickly swam along the corals to the rim of the great dome. Yes, indeed. The water was full of sea trolls swarming around hacking at the corals, breaking way fast. This was indeed gruesome as only the kings and their personal servants resided in Atlantis ever since the crusade began, and all troops were gone ashore to secure HER will.

- Garter upz em Kingies naaz eejit! He shouted at his servant, who swam off to wake the other kings.

Cyy Coth sighed heavily, summoning a horde of green bubbles. As much as he hated it, he knew they would have to call HER home to squish the trollkin. Sure he knew she was the mother, Jolkuna, god of the infinite deeps and his love and faith was as great as anyones but still, he prefered when she was far away.

A troll broke a hole in the coral next to him and stuck its head in. Cyy sighed again and waved his hand at it.

- Sheesh bagger ahwf dampazz!

The trolls head silently imploded and drifted away like a red cloud.

Although some breathing room had been gained, reports of a terrible menace were coming in from the east. Slimy Subterranean Slugs were being worshipped by humans who had, indeed, fallen far from their former friends.

And fortune favored the fiends! A Fortress was freely constructed by a local fool to curry favor. While the Brethren of Brenflusse, Bountiful Goddess of Rivers, continued to find fortune to be extremely fickle.

So, to WAR! Death to the SSSlugs!

There were murmurs among the army, Witch Hunter Otun knew. Since Captain Dante had joined, he had led the army of Marignon from victory to victory, and now the troops were camped around the walls of Eriu itself. This should be a time of celebration. But instead the camp wallowed in melancholy.

It was because of Flonne, of course. Otun watched the angel walk slowly through the camp, followed closely by High Inquisitor Malbien. Malbien was clearly trying to strike up a conversation with Flonne, cheer her up, anything, but for naught. Flonne continued walking, not so much as even acknowledging Malbien's presence.

She had been like this ever since the battle of Eriu province. Otun knew not what happened on that day, but ever since Flonne had not said a thing.

"Nobody knows," said one of the soldiers when Otun went asking around, "but I've heard rumours."

The only things that spread through an army faster than dysentery are rumours and gossip, of course, and Otun had heard them all. The most popular opinion was that the sidhe or the other followers of Eriu's monstrous god had placed an affliction on her. Otun found it plausible, but he was more drawn towards a second explanation.

Marignon's greatest losses in that battle had been the cavalry posted on the right flank. After the enemy troops had fled the battlefield, Otun had examined the corpses of the fallen, and found each of them charred as if they were struck by lightning. Otun had witnessed Eriu witches calling forth lightning before, but nothing that could kill so many so quickly. Nevertheless, he thought nothing of it until a week later one of the crossbowmen mentioned that he had seen Flonne, a renowned air mage, fly into the fray on that fateful day... on the right flank.

(Aside: So, yeah, my pretender is now Mute. Aaargh! So much for forging air boosters.)

You jerks in your free fortresses...in ULM we do it the old-fashioned way, paying a huge amount of gold and waiting for several turns! We also walk to school uphill, both ways, in the snow, wearing Black Plate,in Drain-3, because that's the way we Ulmsman roll.

Also, I'd like to take this opportunity to announce that fine Ulmish forging will be available to trade with our friends and allies in a few turns. Watch this thread for details.

Shigure,

My "witch" is sorry for allegedly silencing Flonne. It is interesting to read your take on our little war. I think you give me too much credit http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

It was fun playing the game everyone, I think I may be the first to get bumped.

The "witch" accused of silencing Flonne is actually Scathach, Trainer of Heroes. She heard Eriu's call and left her busy life of training young heroes in the art of war and lovemaking on her hidden isle of dread mists. She has prophetic powers and has divined the eventual demise of her every student. She wears a raven cloak which allows her to fly. (pretty cool heroine I think with added bonus of her spear causing decay)

Just as the stars had predicted, a great victory was won over the evil Agarthans and their Phoenix Pretender. Although the Phoenix escaped, not much else did.

As the army recuperated, the Prophet reviewed the new reports with a mixture of dread and resignation...an Agarthan army over twice the size of the one just annihilated was moving in. And behind the Agarthans were the numberless hordes of the Ermorians. The SSSlugs and the Empire must have a truce, but how long would it last if the Agarthan army suffered a few more defeats?

But whether it was the Agarthans or Ermorians, the prospect of peace any time soon was just not in the stars.

The Sea kings gathered in the great shell, in the hall of focus. Because focus they would need to talk to HER.

It fell upon Cyy to lead the communion, him being the oldest as well as blessed by HER will. Prophet.

Prophet?, he sure hadnīt asked to be a bloody prophet. His holiness was not a volountary one, but he had been called. And however much he hated it there was no refusing HER will.

They began, blowing pinkish bubbles to each other to seal the comminion and soon Cyys mind was filled with the sweet psychedelic clarity of being the focus of power. Med huffed and reached out, there was no need to find her, he always knew where SHE was.

As always, HER mind overwhelmed and swallowed him. He was drifting inside her divine feelings. And right now these were rage and the joy of slaughter. SHE was in battle, swarmed with tritons who fell like harvested corn before her, through pain and death submissed into HER dominion.

SHE was unwilling to return, and saw little cause to save such pathetic servants incapable of defending their own capital. Cyy pleaded. Cried his love. Begged. But in the end it was the opportunity to have sea trolls for dinner that changed the tables. Fatigued from the effort, Cyy fell unconcious.

When Cyy awoke everything was black from HER ink, the city swallowed by darkness. Sea trolls cried out their pain in the distance.

- Up yerr azzes, bittzches! He mumbled and went back to sleep.

The Forges of Ulm (TM) are getting ready to fire up.

Dwarf Hammers (provides forge bonus) available in very limited quantities; they have a base cost of 15 Earth Gems, but we have plenty of Earth Gems and would be willing to trade one for a comparable number of some other type of gems (we are mainly interested in fire and air gems); we might also consider a cash offer (for a limited time only...because, unlike some countries, Ulsman have to build their castles themslves). There's also a few magical items we're interested in ourselves; if you have at least Construction-2, contact me for a more comprehensive list.

Stipulations:
1. We will only trade with countries we have an NAP with. The NAP must be guaranteed a minimum of ten turns, after which either side can leave with a 3-turn warning.
2. Since quantities are somewhat limited at this time, we will apply a rule of "first come, first served"; you will be made aware of the appx turn no we will send you a hammer during the negotiation. Under certain circumstances, however, we would be willing to negotiate expedited service.
3. Payment will be made the turn before delivery.

Everybody gang up on Ulm! Oh, sure, they might be all "NAP with us! We'll trade you stuff!" now, but the moment the patch is released, they'll be out for lebensraum! Beware!

In other news, the troops of Marignon have now occupied Eriu, bringing an end to the worship of the false god Styx. A preliminary Inquisition report questions whether Styx actually existed, and suggests he was no more than a myth the sidhe created as a way to control their Milesian underlings.

Thus the Marignon-Eriu war comes to a close. In honour of the fallen on both sides, we have built a triumphal arch at the entrance to Eriu -- the magnificent Baldr's Gate.

"The order came.

Rhea was doing well in her new home. However, some disturbing news came for the people of Pangaea. Contact had been achieved with a significant number of other nations now. And some of them were more dangerous than all others. Diplomatic efforts were done to subdue the menace, but inaction seemed to be the only answer diplomats could get.

There could only be one answer to such a menace. Hundreds of centaurs got ready. More and more maenads left their home to join the Pangaea army. Some flagellants even decided to offer their services to the great nation of Pangaea.

The order came, and the order was to be obeyed : If other nations couldn't act, then Pangaea would lead them into action."

"Pangaea therefore declare war against the nation of Ermor."

Lost, all lost. The plan was sound, but it did not take into account 'Flaming Arrows'. Even though the Argathan losses were almost 2:1, the loss of the flower of the Arco Heart Companion along with the virtual elimination of the Elephant Corps has dealt a mortal blow to our dreams.

And the Lady Brenfluss thought she was stronger than she actually was and went adventuring...the call to return our God will be a long and piteous one.

With the advent of War between Pangaea and Ermor, the Evil Agarthans and their 'Flaming Arrow' corps will, we believe, triumph over all in the end.

Cyy sat silently on the corals, staring into the sea. There had been peace for long now, but he felt a tension amongst the kings that had not been there before. The rumors about different wars amongst the land lubbers had become more and more frequent.

War. That word was rarely used in atlantis. Of course there was ravaging tribes of tritons and sea trolls that had to be dealt with, but Cyy could not remember any time in his 457 years they had a full scale war. Was this about to change?

He suddenly felt a huge wave of energy rushing through his head, HER feelings flowing through his body. Joy, rage and determination mixed into a flood of sudden movement.

Seconds later a huge shadow passed over Cyy. After two months of sleep SHE was moving away once more. Cyy silently prayed for the poor souls to come in her way.

You usually wait with patching for the server. You'll get a message that your game version is too low when you download the turn file from the server and it's using a more recent game version than you have. This works both ways: If you upload a turn with a newer game version than the server has, you kill the server. This seems to have happened here.

Cyy sat on the shore, fishing with one of the strange stick like trinkets humans used for the purpose. He found it ineffective compared to atlantian techniques, but of course the humans were physically limited. The new province had proven friendly and the people of wesh embraced the new religion after some brief hesitation.

He was now to stay here for a while, just enjoying himself and take a break from his duties with HER will. Cyy leaned back and grunted with pleasure at the thought.

Resting his head on the ground he became aware of rythmic vibrations. What was this? He disregarded it as some natural phenomena and daydreamed hazily.

The rythmic thuds became stronger and stronger. Could it be some very large animal running in his direction? Cyy stood up and peered into the distance. When he turned east he saw a cloud of dust not far away. He called for astral powers to focus his gaze and suddenly his heart felt cold.

The cloud was filled with soldiers donning shiny armours and wearing pikes. Grey atavi monkeys ran beside them with bows. And towering above them were some monstrous grey beings which were apparently controlled by humans riding on top.

But most shocking were the standard, these troops were from Arcocephale.

Cyy whistled, and the shamblers laying lazily in the shallow waters were roughly awakened. They were not many, but Cyy hoped that this could still be solved peacefully.

When the Arcocephalians came closer Cyy magically empowered his voice and shouted.

- DIZZ BEH JOLKUNAS LANDZ AND AY BE CYY COTH, ERR PROPHET! WHAZZIZ YER BIZNIZZ ERE?

There was some hesitation amongst the Arcocephalian ranks and than a woman in green clothing responded.

- GO AWAY SEAFOLK, THESE LANDS WILL BE OURS. LEAVE THESE SHORES NOW OR FACE THE WRATH OF ARCOCEPHALE!

Cyy Sighed heavily, so time for war had come at last. He nodded to the shambler chief who in turn dived into the water.

- DEN EATZ CORAL, *****! He yelled at the priestess, who looked startled at the sudden change of tone.

The Elephants rushed forward as Cyy had predicted, he called upon HER powers and started to bless his followers. The priestess did the same but she was clearly not so powerful.

The shamblers met the elephants, throwing their large bodies against them to stop their rush. Atlantian poured out of the water and engaged the pikeneers.

The battle was over almost before it began. Cyy was surprised and releived at the ease of which the Arcocephalian troops had been defeated.

Still he was unable to celebrate with his comrades. The peace was broken, once and for all. Now there was no turning back.

Pheidas grimaced...he had learned of another Pretender who had taken land to the west. Atlanteans. He had sent a few troops to deal with it as scouts indicated it was a very small force of fishes.

What was NOT so small was the local Province Defense. They absorbed the charge of his forces, then destroyed them. At least that is what the survivor troops were reporting; no leaders returned from the debacle.

They may have to write off Sleepy Wolds...another in a string of losses. If it wasn't for the Alchemists there would be no money for troops, but the Gems for conversion were few indeed.

Set a trap for the Atlantean. After fighting him the first time I knew his prophet was S2. So I sent in an S4, made him communion master and had 4 slaves. By my count that gives me S6, plus I had extra Astral Gems that could, if used, make me an S7.

Mind Duel. I lost. And did not even take an enemy with me. Which means that a) my Mage did not use the extra Astral Gem and b) the die must have been '1' for me, '6' for him. The ol' 1 in 36 chance.

Equipment, communions, extra pearls, etc, do not count towards Astral level for Magic Duel. The only thing that matters is the base Astral level of the two mages.

Still, S4 losing outright vs S2 is a tough loss, there's only a 1 in 6 chance of that happening.

After many turns of faithful service, Frodo Boggit, the Hoburg Hero, has met a sad and untimely end at the hands of Vanheim. Originally hired by Ulm to stop the lances of Heavy Cavalry, he served much longer than expected and had many distinguished battles, mostly against a few points of Van PD. Personally responsinble for the destruction of no less than two Vanheim temples, this diminutive figure blazed a path of blood across Primea. It is said that upon hearing news of his death, the priests of the God of Vanheim decreed it to be a turning point in the struggle against Ulm.

When asked to comment on the death of this Hoburg, a symbol of terror and fear for all Vans everywhere, Erkeborn, Prophet of the God of Ulm, remarked that he would no longer have to remember to shell out gold every couple months, and expressed regret that the Hoburg Hero could not have waited until next month, the last on his current contract, to die.

"Due to an order that came a few month turn too soon (Rhea thought that maybe the Lord was berseck at the time...), a significant part of Pangaea lands were taken and pillaged. However, soon Machaeon rallied the forces of the southern border, while Rhea rallied the forces of the North. A hero, seeing the desperate struggle in those lands, offered his services. And that started the fight to take back what is ours.

And, after a long struggle against mobile but cowardly ennemies, nothing but rebels remained on the Pangaea home. But Rhea wasn't at peace. There had been no large confrontation yet : the Pangaean armies where spotted, the Ermorian forces left, leaving a trail of destruction behind them. Well, given the might of Pangaean armies, it was the right decision.

But only for a short while. The counter-attack was coming, and this time, the bloodthirsty armies of Pangaea will not stop until nothing remains of their ennemies..."

Just for trivia : I didn't know that unrest could go up to 500 http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif. I won't get money from that province any time soon...

Almost all of this is inferred from the graphs, I'm sure this is incomplete. (I don't know who Shinuyama is at war with, but I can't believe they got 22 provinces against indies alone).

Marignon-Eriu: Primea's first big war, and the last of the Tuatha go down, but not before cursing Marignon's pretender with muteness. Mercenaries made a big difference in holding the front line. (Oh, yeah, Mercs, I can't believe I forgot to re-up Magnus's crossbows. Does anyone else want to see a mage merc? I don't think we've had one yet...)

Atlantis-Agartha-Arco (The "Triple-A" War! If only Abysia were in this game...): Starts out mainly between Arco and Agartha, and starts going badly when Arco pulls out flaming arrows (! Agartha? Flaming arrows? I suppose a lot of the national summons are in Enchantment...) Then Atlantis gets into the fight; I suppose if I were them, I'd attack the only other player with national amphibuous units, too. They seem evenly matched in terms of income; it's Agartha's bigger army against Atlantis's research and castle edge. (Golem Crafters have W1, so with some construction, this could even get underwater.)

Ulm-Vanheim: Obviously, I know quite a bit about this war =). Initialy Ulmish territorial gains stalled when reaching the heart of Vanheim's empire (three castles? All next to each other?). Recent clashes have bloodied both sides, and even the slightest breeze becomes a Blade Wind. Black Halberds against blessed Vans is inevitable.

(Blatant bit of Ulmish propaganda: You're all glad someone BESIDES YOU is at war with Vanheim, I'll bet. Everyone's afraid of dual-blessed Vans, but the Ulmsman are doing something about it. And it started BEFORE the patch, too.)

Ermor-Pangea-Bandar Log: Starts with Pan's invasion of Ermor, and Ermor counter attacks and captures a lot of Pan territory while denying battle. (I would have loved to seen massed undead vs. massed manaed battles) Bandar Log seizes all of Ermor's remaining territory this turn (!); an impressive accomplishment, and I can't help but wonder, with Bander's excellent research, if there wasn't a magic trick to it. (Teleport? Call of the Wild? Or maybe just a coordinated attack on multiple fronts?) Ermor still has a big army, though (presumably holed up in his fortress).

Caelum-Marignon: Caelum made initial territorial gains into Marignon and caused losses on both sides. Marignon is tied for most castles (with Atlantis) and can replace losses quickly, but Caelum has much better strategic mobility. Front seems to have stabilized, although it looks like Marignon gained a province from someone other than Caelum this turn so someone else could be getting into it. (Or maybe Marignon just mopped up an indy, who knows?.)

So that's my (incomplete) analaysis of the major conflicts going on in Primea atm. If anyone would care to add, go ahead and shoot.

kasnavada
March 15th, 2008, 04:39 AM
Your analysis of the Ermor war is quite wrong, since I didn't start it.

Intel is always a difficult business. I mean, we should've found Vanheim's weapons of mass destruction by now =).

But I stand corrected, as in most cases my guess on "who started the war" is pure conjecture; the graphs only give a rough estimate when someone is attacking someone else, when major battles have happened, etc. (Besides the Marignon-Tuatha war, no one seems to have successfully captured a castle, which would be pretty obvious).

Judging by the spike last turn, I'd say it was at Ermor's expense. Prior to that, it was probably all indy; Shinuyama had a nice, defensible corner start, managed to buy the early mercenary groups, and were thus able to expand remarkably quickly.

The amazons I picked up last turn are led by an N1H1 jade priestess. Not that there's much you can do with N1, but she is in fact a mage. Also some pikeneers earlier that were led by an F1H3.

Isn't Atlantis fighting Arcoscephale? Or is it a three-way brawl?

Well, I don't know about being glad about it, but I did take advantage of the situation to, ah, normalise my borders with them.

Front seems to have stabilized,

The front was stable a couple turns ago, but now the only reason the province count is stable is because we've been trading provinces.

This has been a rough war. I was hurriedly snatching up indy provinces east of Eriu to make up for lost time when Caelum launched a handful of seeking arrows that killed my prophet, my mercenary hero, and stranded my indy-hunting army on the Caelian border.

Marignon's answer to most problems ends up being "shoot them" or "set them on fire" or best of all "set your bolts on fire and then shoot them", and Caelum's air/water mages and flying troops pretty much shut both answers down.

although it looks like Marignon gained a province from someone other than Caelum this turn so someone else could be getting into it. (Or maybe Marignon just mopped up an indy, who knows?.)

The Atlantians, in their inestimable wisdom, had decided to send their octopus god to my shores to build a laboratory for me. Why they wished to do this is beyond my meager land-bound mind, but there it is. (By the way, the next time Jolkuna would like to visit, be sure to make an appointment ahead of time; it would appear that you trapezed out just before my company of Soul Slay-spamming grand masters could arrive to welcome you.)

I built the lab just to trapeze Jolkuna down to Arco as she was badly needed there, and it was worth it as she tipped the tide at Arcos capital! I forgot to raze it but what the hell...

I wonder what a cloud trapezing ancient kraken looks like, it must be quite a sight http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Abores, student at Arcocephale university, sighed heavily as he turned the telesope. Another night of staring at the stars, no wonder those astrologers were a bit crazy. It took a while before he realized something was strange about the sky, a large star like black shape was growing fast and covered up the stars. He watched. "It has tentacles" he thought. Then he started running. The kraken crashed upon the university roof just asr Abores threw himself out of range. When he looked up the gigantic monster was looking dizzily down on him. His last thought: "damn, I shouldnīt have ordered sushi..."

Hmm...at first I attributed Ermor's big fall entirely to Bandar Log, but looking at the graphs it does seem Shinuyama also probably had a hand in it. (The two of them put together attacked, what, 8 provinces simultaneously? Yikes.) And this turn Ermor's remaining army is gone, and it looks like Shinuyama suffered some losses, so they probably were the ones to finish him off. (Ermor doesn't seem to have lost their castle just yet though).

On the subject of castles, it looks like Agartha recently captured a castle from Atlantis, marking the first time a castle has changed hands since the Marignon-Tuatha war at the start of the game.

And that's it. Although Arco's walls are not breached, the Army, Pretender and Prophet are all gone. I'll let Atlantis and Agartha fight over the carcass.

Now for griping... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

I cast Magic Duel four times, three times at +2, once at +1. Results were 3 Arco Mages lost, one Atlantean Thug. Unlucky I may be, but that just ain't right... http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

I thought about those unlikely mind duels. And I realised all my thughs had lucky coins. Luck protects 50% against magical attacks too but I have no idea if it effects mind duels. If it does that could be the explanation.

Maybe you guys can help me understand what happened this turn.

There was an army that going to attack my main province ( whith lab and fort, my capital ), so i order some of my mages to cast some invocation rituals ( reanimation ), which, if i read correctly the manuel are resolved before the battle. I also recruit some troups, which also should have been here before the battle.
Finaly i order a few mage to get back to the capital, to have some spell i need to cast in battle ( in the manual, it's also writhe that if you move from a friendly land to another one, you should move before the attackers ).

What i don't understand here, is that in the battle, only my PD was here and the seraph who were here before ( not the other one i told to come in to support ), no recruit unit nor invocation. Why that ? So unfair, snif :'(

( by the way, nice counter for the mammoth bloody Marignon :p maybe the best battle i've seen since i started dominion, very nice http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif )

Troops in a castle don't fight unless they're on "Patrol" order. If they're coming from outside, they have to be on "Move and Patrol". Otherwise they're assumed to be hunkering down inside the castle.

I can't do anything about the Rains or the Mists or the Storms, or the Thunder Strikes or the Falling Frosts, but by God, I can counter the mammoths! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif I seriously misjudged the army placement, though; if my troops had been farther back, I would have taken half the losses. Raīntegoth stood silently on the battlefield. The sky was clear and a great silence had descended between the armies.

Army? They were 41 altogether. 8 proud kings, the mighty kraken Jolkuna, a queen, 21 shamblers and 10 men of clay formed in the last minutes. How could they hope to win?

On the other side stood the cavemen, laughing arrogantly at the sight of the little force who dared to oppose them. The Agarthian army consisted of 300 men, led by their glorious Phoenix god and Ulnun, the ancient oracle. Several golem crafters supported them and Blassyr, the mighty ancient one prophet, would lead the charge.

Beside Raīntegoth Cyaega raised his staff and thrusted it heavily to the ground. Rain started to fall from the sky and an overwhelming roar was raised from the cavemen. At the same time Bael, the phoenix cracked his beak and every bow of the Agarthans numerous archers was set ablaze. The battle had begun.

Magma bolts and blade winds rained over Raīntegoth as he danced forward, evading the hailstorm of magic and flaming arrows. A hundred meters to the left he saw Jolkuna crawl forward with amazing speed. Beside him ran Gujuk, Mashdagu and Balboo forth with desperate battlecries.

And then he was surrounded by enemies. Agarthans with heavy armour and swords at all sides. He ducked and parried like a whirlwind until a red curtain of blind rage swept him away.

He fought like in a bad dream. Flesh and blood and voices crying in pain and fear. The tireness grew but the cavemen kept swarming upon him. Vaguely aware of Balboo falling down behind him, he knew he would collapse any second. "I will die too." he thought, and he welcomed it.

He raised his frost brand for the last time to strike one more foe before giving in to the eternal peace, but there was noone there. Looking hazily around, he was standing alone on the battlefield. Alone? No, Jolkuna still crept forward like a huge nightmare of ancient times. The dead lay everywhere, hundreds of bodies.

Bael the Phoenix still stood proud and fearless. Alone, waiting for the kraken. But his eyes were dull and absent from the effort of calling forth fire in the heavy rain.

Raīntegoth watched as Jolkuna ,almost gently, stretched out a tentacle and picked the bird up to her monstrous beak. Bael gave a faint squeak as his neck snapped...

...and it was over.

Yeah, yeah, sure.

I recall someone stabbing Ermor in the back, and preventing me a part in Ermor's demise by taking the only access to their territory, despite participating in the battle.

Also, I am not exactly breaking a treaty with you. I don't remember setting a time limit. I have not yet entered your territory, declared war, and I will intrude errr... set the people oppressed by your strange customs free next turn.

Furthermore, given our respective positions, you are the most obvious war target. I had to choose between 2 treaty, and I didn't choose yours. This war is not exactly a surprise.

Oops, forgot that mail. Well. I must have been berserk at the time, or busy making maenads !

You still attacked Ermor when it had most of its armies elsewhere and basically finished any hope it had to win its current war. Which means that any other war I may do will have you breaking your NAP and opening a second front on my back. Speak about "respect" whan your actions show some. Breaking a NAP while caring for the time limit on a nation is not respectful either when the nation attacked cannot defend itself properly whether or not the time is respected (due to having most of his armies in bandar log or my territory).

Anyway, the only fact that you deliberatly cut my access to Ermor a few turns ago is an aggressive action you did that is enough to break that treaty anyway.

First, I'd like to thank Hoplosternum for being my opponent in my first big multiplayer war. Certainly I'm still learning a lot of the differences in SP...I mean, I thought I was all bad-*** because my smiths were going to trash his indie archers with Blade Wind, so imagine my surprise when his dwarves whip out Blad Wind on me! ("No! NO! Only I am allowed to have decently researched spells!)

In the name of the Iron Cult, Vanheim has been all but destroyed by valiant Ulsman, and its capital is in our hands. The terror of dual-blessed Vans will no longer trouble Primea. (Incidentally, they tore my Black Halberds to pieces; quirk of when turn starts/stops, it was my Black Knights that had to hold the line against them while my smiths did the damage). We have freed the citizens of that realm from the evil illusion of the "glamourous" Vanir.

And, of course, trade: Ulm wants fire gems, and will trade basically any other type for them, although obviously we have more of some gems than others. (Water, Death, and Nature are what we have the most of, have least Air/Astral)

kasnavada

Nicely done ! I was so afraid of that cavalry !

I profit from this post to say I also have lots of water gems with no use for them.

We also have a lot of water gems, and would like nature gems or earth gems in echange if possible !

Also, this day only for you all : a new Rhea novel !
"Once again, the warcries resonated in the empty halls of Farseer mountains. The lizard that inhabited there were too alien to be of good company, and everyone else had left. The war against Ermor was started too soon, and as a result, most of Pangaean territory had been rampaged. The counter-attack worked though, and they fled from Pangaean lands... or died there.

War was everywhere, and to the North, the people of Vanheim was killed by some other people, from Ulm. A lot of gods where running around these days, and Rhea wished she hadn't gotten involved with all this.

The Lord of Forest had decided that the enemy was Shinuyama. The citizen barely had enough time to enjoy bandit-free lands that the war started anew. This time though, it would be different. That's what the citizens were told, at least. But Rhea had seen a lot since the Lord took over Pangaea. The lord was not understandable by mortel minds such as herself. He also went berserk for no reasons at all, or maybe reasons that made only sense to him. The last time it happened was a few month ago. He went to medidate in the forest on a whim, came back with several dozens of maenads, and new orders : war !

She knew that he occasionally shouted orders when berserk, but since the first war began, orders where followed, no matter what the state of mind of the Lord of Forests was. But even a God couldn't berserk after a few month of meditations, and still that order was issued. Thus the war started."

kasnavada
March 25th, 2008, 04:03 PM
"The first victory had been achieved. Even if it was a small one (another army with the same size was approaching) and the loss where tremendously high, 7 of the 12 enemy commanders had been killed, along with more than 160 of their units, for about equal loss (except we lost no commanders). The battle had been harsh though, and the wrath of the evil god still made casualties after the war ended. Fire rained but fearless maenads still ran happily to the enemy ranks, taking more and more of their lives in exchange for their own. Centaur archery exchanged arrows against the foul fire magic of the opponent, and got out mostly intact. Casualty where high, but mainly maenads, forest beasts and harpies where lost. All of those could be replaced."

Be happy Shinuyama, you will see Rhea fight soon !

We would also ask our friends here to share a quick prayer to Pammon. He heroically took the life of 1 militia in a suicidal charge against 197 enemy units.

Primea's two largest armies (Pan and Shin) battling it out! Almost a shame I can't see battles between them.

Shinuyama has many more castles, but Pan has scads of freespawn. Trading with Maenads 1:1 is a losing proposition imo.

Plus, I can't imagine Shinuyama has made many friends with the Wrath of God. Even some of my troops are getting hit, and I have no direct border with Shinuyama.

Also: Ulm still wants fire gems, and will trade gems of any other type for them 1:1. I have scads and scads of water gems and will trade water for fire 2:1.

Sabish Kaah stood by the forge and mumbled irritably.

The rage was starting to build up in Atlantis. The Agarthans refused to give up their relentless attacks. They had even ventured under the waves with their awakened statues. The attacks had so far been repelled by the brave Kings and their loyal shamblers. But many had died and the death of a deep king was a serious issue in Atlantis. Some even talked about sending in the main force, but those were still silenced by wiser and older members of the Deep order.

The report from the last battle in Arcocephales former capitol was like the others before it. Two of the most notorius kings had died and taken the bulk of Agarthan forces with them. Most shamblers and the captured arcocephalian elephants was also slain. It seemed the agarthans had intensified their summonings. And some new foul and ethereal beings had been sighted on the battlefield. An enormous living statue of pitch black stone had been crushed by Jolkuna herself. In the end they had won, eight kings drenched in blood gazing thoughtfully after the fleeing cavemen. Jolkuna chasing them, mad with bloodlust as always. But could they really be called victorious, when two dear friends lay dead in the mud?

Sabish Kaah sighed, and put the newly forged frost brand amongst the other. Never before had the demand for tools of destruction seemed so endless.

Welcome, cupido.

And, in case you're wondering, the Forges of Ulm (TM) is pleased to announce that we are able to trade low-path Air forging. Robes of Missile Protection, Silver Hauberks, Bows of War for sale. (In addition to Dwarven Hammers, Earth Boots, and all those other Earth items you've come to love and trust.)

Normally I don't like to offer research items, but I do need Fire Gems so I'll offer to trade Lightless Lanterns for the base cost of 5 fire gems. I'll also trade gems of any other type for fire 1:1.

Bows of war sounds interesting. How much?

ComTrav

Bow of War has a base cost of 5 Air Gems. Since liberating central Primea from the scourge of the Vanir, I have enough air gem income to forge one or so a turn, so if you don't have air gems I'll take gems of any type except Water. (If you have Fire, I'll give extra value for those.)

Unrelated subject: Has anyone tried to dispel Wrath of God? (Someone whose name begins with B and ends with Ander Log, maybe?) I always wondered how globals in MP would play out...

There was a battle in Solian.

Our military force has been beaten by a stronger force from Ulm. The enemy now controls our province.

Friendly Combatants
commanders 28, killed 21
regular units 391, killed 235

Enemy Combatants
commanders 28, killed 4
regular units 249, killed 106
magic beings 36, killed 36
undead beings 69, killed 69

Wow. Now that was a fight. Well done, Ulm!

On Marignon's side, we had flaming arrows, fire pyres, soul slays, stellar cascades, the well-equipped prophet-hero Tomaso del Monferrada, and diseased old men magic dueling Ulm's pretty sorceresses. For regular troops we had royal guard and way too many crossbowmen. (Shinuyama's Wrath of God killed the commander that was supposed to be bringing the men-of-arms to the theatre.)

On Ulm's side, fire fends, strengths of giants, legions of steel, blade winds, iron blizzards, magma eruptions, a bunch of crystal sorceresses toting bows of war, and a couple of thugged-out banes. The army was composed of crossbowmen, assorted infantry, black knights, ghouls, bone fiends, and great lions.

My army also had some Clockwork Horrors, but they didn't last very long =). (Not like they were supposed to, anyway, but they seemed like an OK buy at the time because they were immune to fire...not immune to arrows, as it turns out...)

You retreated your pretender, too, she was there to put the stomp on my poor scout last turn.

Also, I appreciate the name, "Great Northern War" sounds so much cooler than Ulm-Marignon war. Besides, Caelum's still around, and probably very glad those 400 or so Marignon troops are out of his territory.

I have the research and mage for the dispel, but Astral Pearls are in short supply. The old Shinuyama player claimed no one would be able to dispel it, so I'm going to assume he put it down with a lot of extra gems or used a very high path mage.

Oh, hah, so you did. They're probably good against regular arrows; not so much against crossbows, though.

You retreated your pretender, too, she was there to put the stomp on my poor scout last turn.

Her chest wound means SCing it up would be asking for trouble, and her A2 magic means that in return for risking her life in combat I get a few castings of Lightning Bolt. Not a very effective tradeoff. You might see her again when I get Arrow Fend and Wind Guide, though. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

It'll be interesting to see what Caelum does. If he attacks me, I'm doomed. If he attacks you, you are probably in trouble. If he doesn't attack either of us, he will end up encircled by whichever of us was the victor.

I expected she was there for Wind Guide, but she didn't have any gems.

No, I think Marignon really should spend all of its Astral Pearls to dispel this pernicious scourge of Primea. That they have refused to do so has left the nations of Ulm, who are naturally concerned about the well-being of all other peoples, that in order to dispel the Wrath of God the astral pearl supply of Marignon must be acquired, by force if neccessary.

Despite protests of "No Blood for Astral Pearls", and claims that we are merely stirring up trouble with Marignon to distract from our failure to find WMD in Vanheim, Ulm feels it has no other option. Plus, we're envious of the fancy clothes that give Marignon soldiers +1 morale.

Solian Round 2, not quite as impressive in terms of sheer numbers of troops (200 or so per side instead of 400). Still pretty impressive, though.

What's funny is, in both battles, hardly any melee happened; its just exchanging mage and archer fire. Strength of Giants hardly seems worth it, when that COULD'VE been another Blade Wind/Magma Eruption. (Legions of Steel, though, still worth it).

Yup, you were well-positioned to counter every one of my tricks, and I could only counter one of your tricks (mammoths), so I had to rely on raw economic power and attrition. Which was working, until Vanheim fell too quickly and ruined everything!

By the way, I'm surprised you never tried raiding my territory. If you had gone hopping about with a handful of fliers through my minimally defended farmland, I would have had a tough time dealing with that.

Hmmm, good question... who's the one to blame: the one that sent them on the battlefield or the one that killed them on the battlefield? Perhaps the Stone Oracles of Agartha know the answer... but I think everyone entering a battlefield knows that he/she could get into trouble.

So, if Pangea and the noble apes promise to stop their attack, withdraw from the lands of Shinumaya and swear not go to war with Shinuyama again, we might overthink the Wrath of God.

Tomaso del Monferrada rode wearily across the Umidor coastline, the churning of the Whirling Sea sounding static in his mind. Where had it all gone wrong? Had he not lived in state of grace? Had not the Church itself? Sure, there was the occasional heretic or apostate, but they were always dealt with thoroughly. The Church remained pure. What, then, could explain the defeats in Solian? How could they have been brought low by the cold, unfashionable peasants of Ulm?

Suddenly the churning stopped. Startled out of his thoughts, Tomaso turned to stare at the ocean. Spirited waves no longer disturbed its surface, and Tomaso almost felt that it was mourning a great loss. Or maybe it was a sense of relief?

Tomaso watched the placid sea for moments longer, before turning his steed from the coast. The ocean may have found its rest, but the chivalrous man knows no leisure. This was a test, Tomaso decided, a test of faith. Marignon was not yet dead, and neither was the Church. So long as Tomaso lived, so long as the Lady Flonne watched over him, he would maintain his faith. He would see the fight through. So long as he lived, Marignon would never die.

Oh, Caelum, you fools. After giving you a second chance at survival, this is the payment I receive in return? I don't know what Ulm has promised you. I don't know how you intend to escape from Ulm's suffocating grasp when I am gone, or perhaps Ulm has agreed that they would destroy you last? But it doesn't matter. I gave you a chance for peace. I went out of my way to try to establish friendly relations with you. But you were never a friend; you only wanted a few turns to rebuild so you could drag both of our empires into the abyss.

What do you hope to gain, Caelum? Territory? Do you think I can't defend against you because I'm off fighting Ulm? Do you think that because I spared you the first time, I would spare you again?

You are wrong, Caelum, utterly wrong. I declare unending holy crusade against you, Caelum. All the forces of heaven itself hereby declare war on you. Your people may have been created in the images of angels, but they have fallen further than the lowliest markata; they are more contemptible than the basest bakemono. Marignon's days may be numbered, but we still have strength enough to fight you. From my demise you shall win nothing.

To Ulm, I apologise that I will not have the chance to spill much more of your blood. You deserved a better fight. Thank you for that golem, though! Trading a grand master and a couple of pearls for all those goodies was well worth it.

To the uncivilised nations of the south, may you settle your disputes as quickly as you can, lest Ulm come to dominate the world.

You know, Marignon, I don't think it was you that gave Caelum a second chance of survival; if I had just sat on the border after ridding Primea of the Scourge of the Vans, I somehow doubt you would've offered Caelum peace out of the goodness of your heart.

I was excited about the golem at first, but in retrospect maybe not my best option for raiding an astral power.

As soon as this war is over and I have plenty of Pearls to spare I'm dispelling Shinuyama's global. It doesn't impact me much, but for the good of Primea, it needs to be done. It's frustrating our trading partners in the south, and irritating basically everyone.

You're absolutely right, of course. Though in retrospect, I shouldn't have offered them a truce at all.

In any case, I don't know what they expect to gain from Round Two. Sure, you saved them in a way, but now they'll be trapped as an enclave of Greater Ulm. What are they going to do, wait for an opportune moment to backstab you?

Tomaso del Monferrada stood outside Baldr's Gate and peered down the road that wove through the forests of Eriu towards the Marignon plain to the southwest. By now, he knew, the hordes of Ulm would be occupying Marignon City, and that it was only a matter of time before they would be marching up that road, slowly but unstoppably. Perhaps our exodus is not yet ended, Tomaso thought to himself, and turned to the east where the sun was just rising, hanging cold above the lands of the Caelians. Fighting the Caelians was bad enough before, but now the very grip of winter follows them into battle. Tomaso was reluctant to lead another mortal army into that frozen hell, but what choice was left?

It was true that for every province lost to the dragon god and his host, the angels of Heaven would liberate three, but Garcimor's army yet remained, and Tomaso's ragged army could do little about it.

"Father Tomaso! Father Tomaso!" yelled a messenger as he hurriedly approached the prophet. Tomaso's heart sunk. What had happened now?

The messenger reached Tomaso and fell to his knees panting, holding up a parchment. "Great news, sir," the messenger choked out between breaths.

Tomaso gingerly accepted the message and broke the seal.

To: Tomaso del Monferrada, General of the Lady's Army
From: Sir Magnino, Commander, Promised Land garrison

I offer you great tidings, sir. Two days past a Caelian army attacked our position and were repulsed. Caelian casualties numbered at least fourteen, including a blue dragon. Brother Nevelon has studied the remains and believes it to be the Caelian dragon god, Garcimor. ... ...

Tomaso dropped the message unfinished. Garcimor has fallen? And not only that, but to a mere provincial garrison? Tomaso took a moment to recover. "Is this... is this true?" he hesitantly asked the messenger.

"I saw the beast myself," said the messenger. "It must have been Garcimor. How many other blue dragons can there be?"

Tomaso stared unbelievingly at the messenger, then again at the parchment. Then he started laughing. "Glory be to Heaven, this is a miracle!" Tomaso gleefully shouted to the sky.

The one in Pholothras, now standing around in Alman? They were inside the fort biding their time. I wanted to break the siege many turns ago but I was worried that the dragon and his army would move back to help the siege along.

As for the god, as ComTrav said it was the hostile dominion that did you in -- I had 8 or 9 candles in that province, which translated into an 80% hitpoint reduction for your god. Also both the dragon and your army stayed back, allowing my crossbowmen a dozen or so turns to fire on you unmolested. Apart from that there were no tricks -- I had no troops or commanders there, only a provincial defence of 20.

By the way, how do you like those angels? Though your surprisingly massive PD got my harbinger this turn. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

Going to add nature gems to the list of gems I want.

So the Forge of Ulm (TM) are now in need of Earth and Nature gems. We will trade gems of any other type for Earth/Nature. We'll also take these as payment in kind for other gems for any forging. (And I can forge almost every path except blood, though I only have air-1 and my numbers of forgers in certain areas may be limited...incidentally, will also consider trading for air boosters)

As to Marignon, I'll catch Tomaso sooner or later. I'm still a little surprised you decided to put all your effort into attacking Caelum rather than stand and defend your capital. Your angels are rather impressive, but I remind you you are not the only one in Primea capable of outfitting (or countering) Thugs.

Finally, it's good to see that Pan has lifted Shinuyama's siege on the castle on our borders.

Anyone have news of the Atlantis/Agartha conflict? Agartha seems to have taken back some territory in the past few turns.

I'm sure you will. I have nowhere to run, after all. My goal at this point is to grab as much territory as I can and then set it on fire. (Though I haven't been fully effective at that; if I was thinking straight, I would have dismantled my forts as you approached them. It only takes you a turn to crack them open, anyway.)

After the battles at Solian, my capital became indefensible. Even without the eastern distraction, I probably would have lost it at least temporarily. (I'm surprised you assaulted my other fortress first, by the way; I was expecting you to go straight for the capital.)

In any case, I had basically three choices: attack you and ignore Caelum, attack Caelum and ignore you, and attack both of you. For the first, if I was really lucky I might have been able to fight you to a standstill... until the resurgent Caelum destroys me. The third would almost certainly lead to defeat in detail to no effect. That left the second option, which also leads to my destruction but it also drags one of you down with me. If there was a route to victory that I overlooked I'd sure like to hear about it.

Your angels are rather impressive, but I remind you you are not the only one in Primea capable of outfitting (or countering) Thugs.

I assure you, I am fully aware of your capabilities. (Also, due to the loss of gem income, I am no longer particularly capable of outfitting thugs. I don't suppose you could port in another one of those golem gift packages? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif )

Anyone have news of the Atlantis/Agartha conflict? Agartha seems to have taken back some territory in the past few turns.

Atlantis took one of Agartha's forts a couple turns back, and is now sieging the capital.

After Solian you still had two decent-sized armies, and sieging one of your fortresses kept you from combining them. Mainly, though, I expected you to fight more for your capital. Although now I have plenty of fire gems for fire fend.

You could probably hold out for more than a turn with your massive force of barbarians, but then they wouldn't be able to continue looting and pillaging the countryside. (Which I assume is why you built so many). At least I won't need to work too hard to change the scales in your territory (Vanheim's turmoil/sloth/cold was pretty frustrating, although I didn't mind the Drain so much).

The reason is much more sad than that. Namely, that Caelum keeps thunderstriking my heavy infantry and cavalry dead, and storming my crossbowmen useless... and that's pretty much the entire Marignon roster. I've been training flagellants -- unblessed flagellants -- and barbarians. ... I hate fighting Caelum. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

(And, of course, those are exactly the worst possible units to use against blade winding Ulm.)

If I understand rightly, you don't gain any bonus from positive scales in hostile dominion. But yes, apart from the heat I didn't take any bad scales.

Oh Pangea and Bandar Log, why are you harrassing me like that! Pangea is bleeding to death and Bandar will face the same fate after we strangeld the Pans. All you achieve is to dig the grave for all three of us.

You are correct, I don't get a bonus from your positive scales, but since you don't have negative scales, I don't get a penalty. (And, when I get around to spreading my dominion, I won't have to work hard to change scales).

"Shinuyama should not go on with that harmless banter. You had in hands one of the main powers in the world, and couldn't beat any of us in a much too long war.

I must add that I didn't get more than 200 gold / month worth reinforcements for 20 month now (maybe even more), and still for those months you failed to beat me. You turned (unlike your predecessor) your attention to me, and let bandar log take your territory, and build an army so strong that he doesn't need me anymore to beat you.

Bleed me out ? Let me laugh. I'd already dead, left behind in research, left behind in magic, left behind in income, and only through sheer skills and willpower did I manage to survive for so long. There was nothing to bleed in the swamp that make my land to begin with. I accepted the fact that I'm going to be crushed as soon as this war is over about 20 turns ago, as I started it ! I even know the name of my future killers, for there is but 3 neighbours left to me now.

You, however, should do the same and start accepting the reality of your situation. I will remind you that you had half of your loss against my army, the other half against bandar log (which had at the start of this war the smallest military of all nations). You, my opponent, have been fighting a losing war for ages and after all that time, you still somehow fail to see it.

This may be a bit too much information to say, but, my dear opponent, I have to tell you this. You have been fighting against me, neither of us has an advantage on the battleground, and the weapons given to us where :
- 3 times more gold and gem income for you,
- my beloved maenads.

I look forward to even more wailing on your part. Go on ranting about my bleeding ! For I am a master of blood magic and not afraid of a few drinks ! Especially when my opponent doesn't realize that the blood he sees is his own. I'm just sad that I'll be thirsty soon..."

i can't believe you can anything out of those maenads, even in SP they just die for me...if I ever play ma Pan in mp, I'm so rocking order/prod for those centaurs, satyr hoplites and heavily armored minotaurs. (I like the minotaurs for some reason). All with recuperation...nothing makes me more sad than to look at some of my veteran troops, some with me since the beginning, with 4 XP, but blind, crippled, and diseased. Even Erkeborn, the Prophet of Makita, the God of Ulm, will unfortunately succumb to disease soon, after a series of legendary campaigns, including crushing the feared Vans and the enormous battles of the Solian.

(Also, has anyone noticed Shinuyama's research has STOPPED the past two turns? Did a Lab burn down, has he decided he's "done" with research, or has every bakemono sorcerer needed for the campaign?)

I use meneads all the time. They die, yes. They die INSTEAD of your other troops, mages, thugs etc. In when MP your opponents rain evocations over you it is often cruical to have disposable chaff to lure the damage away from your other troops. Also meneads donīt rout easily so they are great combined with panic and fear spells in early to mid game. In late game when you combine them with army of gold, mass regeneration and stuff they are actually awesome armies to overwhelm your foes. Dont underestimate them.

My use of them is exactly as Ylvali said.

I'd rather build 10 centaurs and have 20 maenads die than building 15 centaurs and losing 5 centaurs every fight.

Well, it's over for me, thanks for playing everyone, i learned a lot on that game.

Specially about diplomacy, i just can't believe that ulm was so honest.
How could he be the first one and fair ? ^^

I should attack you in the first round i think, but more the game advance, the more you were a strong and honest ally. Maybe i should wait more to attack again marignon, so both of you have been weaker.
But anyway i didn't plan a real good strategy, too short, i never play so far even against the computer ^^

Again thanks everyone see ya in other lands http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Farewell, Holy bricklayer, and good luck in future games.

I admit, I was worried you would attack me when we first ran into each other. Mammoths are not fun for MA Ulm, and there's definitely some posters on this forum that insist MA Ulm MUST take a size 6 SC pretender. But you still had Vanheim waiting to bless rush SOMEONE, and an aggressive Marignon on your border.

So far from the deeps of Atlantis, both in distance and culture. The caelinan people were all but unknown to the deep kings. Still the news of their demise cause tears amongst the sensitive atlantians. Forever lost the chance to befriend such a wild and free species.

The humans are like grasshoppers. Ever****ing rabbits, multiplying and crushing the old races beneath them. It is a bitter irony that we and the agarthans shall serve their cause by fighting each other.

Thanks, Ich, I've played my turns.

And AI Caelum has besieged Marignon's largest army with ten Holburg militia! Surely they mean to reclaim the capital. The Great Northern War continues. (It's fortunate that the AI tries to break sieges, as over a hundred fliers could hold up a fort extremely well.) I can't believe your pikeman downed my Bane Lord. Maybe Marble Armor was a better choice than Ethereal Robe.

Meanwhile, the Atlantis/Agartha war seems to be drawing to a decisive close.

The Forges of Ulm (TM) are now interested in nature gems, and will trade gems/forging of any other type for them.

I would be quite careful about giving Ulm nature gems, I smell tartarians.

No offense meant by that, just dont want them around yet.

ComTrav
May 5th, 2008, 05:53 PM
...why would I need nature gems for Tartarians? (And certainly, research for some people is high enough that they could be running around with Tartarans now, as well.) There are certain nature items that are good for a thug/sc, but there are lots of other, less-impressive options than Tartarans.

Besides, Tartarians are getting nerfed soon anyway, although how much shattered soul will reduce their viability as an endgame tactic isn't clear yet. And we're certainly approaching the 'endgame', with several nations with very high levels of research.

Ylvali

I was thinking of gift of health, which combos with tartarians. But if you say it ainīt the plan I appologize.

EDIT: youīd also need nature gems for gift of reason, actually tartarians reqire much more nature than death gems. I thought that was the reason you wanted them.

Your point on GoR is well taken, although my dominion's really not strong enough to take full advantage of Gift of Health. (Many, many turns ago I thought about casting it, but I spent my nature gems on other things.) Although, of course, healing afflictions is always nice.

What a mess of a battle in Pangea! And I'm glad as hell I took those trolls with me. Why did Pangea rout? I'm not sure I deserve that victory.

kasnavada
May 7th, 2008, 04:29 PM
The 75% hp limit killed me.

That's another "victory" because of a stupidly fixed limit.

Simply the maenads have too much HP and that made me rout. Your god and trolls have enough HP and the fleeing bandits don't seem to count since they don't die, so you didn't rout. Despite my thugs just starting to get to kill your trolls and mages. I know another thing that I shouldn't have done : I should have made those thugs berserk. This way I would have taken much more of your troops. Well, it's a newbie game, I'm here to learn...

I don't know how I won this one. I must remember to use centaur archers to attack regular troops more often.

But the good comes here : Beer gut, the God of Shinuyama, the caster of Wrath of God passed away, along with his prophet and the army that took Pangaea last month. That's what happens when you retreat into allied territory.

Oh-oh... don't want to see that battle..

Ugh. No. It's ok I lost that one. I wanted to force the decision. I havn't had enough regular troops, one or two imprecise lava bursts, weird scripting (as always) and some laziness summed up to that loss.
