I remember having read somewhere that area of effect of spells does increase with magic level in a similar way of penetration, is that true or have I dreamed?
Thanks

Some spells do. Check out if there is a '+' after AoE.

As Kristoffer said, + after a value means that the particular value increases with levels. It can be AoE, damage, number of effects or summoned units, range or almost anything, really.

Some spells with the "+" sign not used very often, due to their rather tame effect, can do extraordinary things in communion.

Like banishment? It's my case ...

Yes, banishment is actually:
Area of Effect 2 base + 2 per level
Range 15 base + 5 per level
Damage 3 base + 2 per level
Penetration: +1 at each level 3, 5, 7, 9, etc
I have no idea where I got the attached spreadsheet, I'm very sorry to the original creator for not being able to credit him. But it has all the stats.
If a number is greater then 999, then the 1000's digit is the value per level. For example, 2003 is 3 base plus 2 per level. (Does not count for 10,000's digit, that is not 10 per level.)
