View Full Version : FunnelEaredBat - MA newbie game: started
llamabeast
February 25th, 2008, 06:08 PM
Since FruitBat, VampireBat and GhostBat filled up insanely fast, I'm creating a ridiculous fourth overflow game for new/newish players. I'd recommend players who've played 0-2 games previously - if you've played more than that and would like to play regardless, post here and you can play if we're short of players. This should be a nice, fun and friendly game, a reasonable size but not too huge, and generally ideal for new players (that's the plan, at least).
This will be an MA game and will use the Worthy Heroes mod. Renaming will be on, graphs will be on, and everything else will be standard.
The map will be my modified version of Parganos, which is modified (a) to have a much more fair and even spread of terrain types, (b) to have fair-ish start positions, and (c) to have no gold or magic sites in the seas - so this will be a land-nation only game.
Please sign up and choose a nation!
The players are:
Pangaea - kasnavada
Vanheim - MartialDoctor
Abysia - Profanicus
Ulm - Wookie1977
Marignon - LordCalvert
Arcoscephale - SiyfkA
C'tis - Peacekeeper
Bandar Log - elbnar

...why not just make a bigger game instead of 8 players?
llamabeast
February 25th, 2008, 06:10 PM
I think 8 is a nice number for a newbie game. Larger games are fun too, but obviously they end up being much bigger affairs for those players which survive. When I started I played a series of 4-player games which I enjoyed hugely. I think 8 is a good number though, since it also allows for some diplomacy.
kasnavada
February 25th, 2008, 07:39 PM
Well, I think I have time to enjoy a third game. Pangaea ?
However, if another person wants my place for his (her?) first games, I'll leave it.
llamabeast
February 25th, 2008, 07:40 PM
Three games at once? Feel free, but I would probably advise against it unless you have a lot of free time. At first it's not a problem, but if you survive to late game in all three it could be a bit much. On the other hand if you are already in late game in the first one you probably have a good feel for it.
MartialDoctor
February 25th, 2008, 07:58 PM
Alright, I'll take Vanheim for this one then.
Llamabeast, may I ask why you like to put the graphs on?
llamabeast
February 25th, 2008, 08:01 PM
Personally, I just think it's fun to look at the graphs every turn. As a new player it's particularly good because you get some idea of whether you're expanding as fast as you should be, and so on.

llamabeast
February 28th, 2008, 05:46 AM
And we are full! Amazing, 4 newbie games in just a few days. Dragonninjaakira - sorry, you just missed the boat. If you're willing to take your chances in a non-newbie game you could sign up to Uakari though.
Right everyone, here's how to upload your pretenders:
- Make sure you have the same mods enabled as the game you're playing in (Preferences->Mod Preferences) although only mods affecting pretender design, such as Conceptual Balance, actually matter
- Go to Game Tools -> Create a pretender god in Dominions. Don't set a password, since for PBEM games they're not helpful and occasionally annoying (e.g. if you need a sub)
- Go to the savedgames/newlords folder in the dominions directory, and find your pretender file (e.g. mid_pythium_0.2h)
- E-mail the file to: pretenders[ at ]llamaserver[ dot ]net
- Crucially, you must have the game name 'FunnelEaredBat' in the subject line of your e-mail
We'll see how long everyone takes to do that, but I reckon it shouldn't take more than a day or two.

Noooo! I am a new MP player, haven't played outside of a couple LAN games with 3 other buddies. I don't want to play in a non-new player only game lest I get crushed and potentially ruin the game for other players. I was dismayed to see that this 4th overflow has already filled. Are there any other new player games available?

Now that 3.15 is out, when will we be switching?
Profanicus
March 6th, 2008, 05:40 PM
The Llamaserver has been patched to 3.15 so I would say we do it now, ready for turn 8!
"Happily, as players it is impossible to do anything wrong. You can take your current turns using either 3.14 or 3.15, it doesn't make any difference. Next turn you will have to take using 3.15 - but if you try to open it using 3.14 it won't let you, so again it is impossible to make a mistake."

Hey guys, should have done this a while ago: I'd like to ask for a volunteer to admin this game. The admin has to do two things:
1) If a player asks for an extension or anything then do it (provided it's reasonable; a day or two is reasonable, if they are going away for a week they should get a sub). It's super easy via the interface on the website.
2) If the admin gets knocked out of the game, pass the password on to one of the remaining players.
It's a really easy, almost zero-work job, but it keeps me from having to carefully watch 30-odd game threads (which I tried for a bit, and it hurt).
LordCalvert
March 8th, 2008, 01:49 PM
Since I'm a grumpy old retiree, I'll volunteer to do it. I'll probably be asking for the first extension next weekend as I'll be tied up running an SCA event here in deepest, darkest.

I know it is supposed to be "standard victory conditions", but then why are there Victory Point crowns in some of the provinces?

Yeah, I had the same question in my last game. Here is the response I got:
"Yeah, there are VPs for some reason, but they don't really mean anything but a little increase in dominion when you take 'em when there's no VP victory."

I will be out of contact over the weekend. If a turn does not run tonight (14 Mar), I will put in an extension. If it does run, I'll get in a quickie turn and extend until sometime Sunday evening (I'm in US Eastern time zone). The delay should be minimal.
Remember that if anyone else needs an extension, please post it here and either Llama or I will ensure it is taken care of.

I just sent a PM to you actually Peacekeeper - I think unfortunately you misread LordCalvert's statement - he didn't say he would necessarily delay or anything, just basically that he might have to postpone in order to get his own turn in, but hoped not to. Also he said he would be out of contact over the weekend, so it's not surprising he hasn't replied to you. The staling is unfortunate though.

i believe a 3 turn NAP means that neither will take aggresive actions for 3 turns.
Some NAPs are specifically set to last until one side feels the need to break it and then they give the other person a agreed upon set of turns warning beforehand.
If you made teh first kind of NAP, it sounds like he was in the right. If you made the second, then he would have indeed broken the NAP in a dishonorable way.

kasnavada
April 1st, 2008, 06:55 PM
Sure.
Actually. I wouldn't count that as a real victory for me though. I was outnumbering you badly. And I had pretty bad scripting on my part too, I mean, did you notice the archers going for the back ? That certainly was not intended... I'm lucky that centaur archers have a pretty good melee ability.

Well I wanted to script the other centaurs to do that... I must have mixed up the orders somewhat. Something else, why didn't your guys move ? I though they would have either retreated to defend inland or to bait me in, or move forward by outmaneuvering my army, and try to regroup with your other group that's invading the swamps near the former bandar log lands. I mean, you must have seen that I outnumbered you, no ?

Abysia stormed the gates of one of the many north-western Arco strongholds and was repelled, their powerful magicians laying waste to hordes of our bretheren.
We gathered our forces to defend against the coming pursuit, and were successful in routing the enemy from the field ... all save 1 lone Golem. He radiated power. In a fit of rage he cleaved through our brave warriors, a fearsome sight to behold as the bodies piled around his mighty feet ... lands momentarily ours lay ravaged by the fires of pestilence and war.

BTW, if anyone ever needs an extension for whatever reason, email me privately. You're far more likely to get a timely response that way than by posting here. The little email button should work. If it does not, my private email is CalvertdeGrey -at- msn -dot- com

Well, I'm pretty much done. For some reason the server didn't accept my last turn when I emailed it in. (It accepted it and ran the turn but it was not anything I intended) My forces did nothing I ordered and I got walked all over.
That's what I get for buying a new computer. Frelling Vista.

Yeah Wookie1977 has had his turn, we are just waiting on you to have yours Lord Calvert! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
So no need to extend just yet ... Wookie1977 may even get another turn in before he leaves on Wednesday.
And besides, extending a turn by 5 days is a little unreasonable - a temp sub should be found if this were the case, surely?

Hmmmmm,
So really it is only a 24 hour extension, if my maths are right? As we are on a 48 hour cycle at the moment.
Maybe someone should email calvert and tell him the dates are out.
As it would seem to me that the next hosting falls in the middle of when wookie is away.
As opposed to just before he leaves, and then just after he comes back.

Re the game: The best thing is for one of the other players to take over as admin, and for us to post an advert for someone to sub in for LordCalvert. I'll take a look at his position now so I can make an appropriate advert, or set him to AI if it wouldn't be fun to sub.

Hi guys.
This is hard, I really have no clue what to do against those nasty golems. One is even named "THE BANE OF MARIGNON".
Besides that, I really have no clue what Marignon's plans were, if they had any.

kasnavada, my troops are far from starving. They are all drunk on endless bags of wine http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif. Your troops aren't looking so healthy, according to the battle report. I was hoping my walls would hold out a bit londer, but I shouldn't have expected so much from a Pan built castle http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif.
Griefor, welcome to the game. Magic duel works well if its the astral golems.
kasnavada
May 2nd, 2008, 09:08 AM
Well, you did manage to take the castle in the first place... It's no wonder the walls are weak now that you demolished them and rebuilt them ! More seriously, there is no castle anywhere that could have withstood the demolition team that I put to work here.
And, I do remember, that you did try to destroy those walls for a long while and retreated before being able to do so a while ago...

Hi Griefor,
I am a recent sub as well. Although I got severely broken and almost destroyed C'tis where as you got still powerful with lots of men and provinces and income Marignon.
First point I guess is I don't think Marignon was well liked in his earlir incarnation, talk of NAP breaking and double dealing and all that.
Secondly I don't think Marignon had any actual plans. Flaming arrows and lots of crossbows seemed to be about it, and if that didn't work then he was screwed.
There is a discussion a bit earlier where profanicus killed SiyfkA's golem with magic duel. But my advice would be to get stuck into Ulm and leave C'tis alone. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Hum I'm in a tight spot now, following that defeat.
Why the hell did you get out with your diseased troops ?
Well, that was well done. Bad scripting on my part but good for yours. And nearly 40 commanders, and lot of mages... that hurts.
I also need to know why my centaurs happily attacked in melee your pretender instead of pelting your troops with arrows... even if his flight was most excellent since he arrived just near my mages !

Well maybe Griefor would be interested in taking over? Since Mariginon is nearly destroyed.
Or we could just set him to AI? Not sure how many people are going to want to sub for him?
Although he might be doing better than I thought but it looked to me like Pan and Abysia had finally got him beat.
