View Full Version : The big gems poll

The way I use gems has changed a lot in my dominion carreer.
In the beginning I was very gem retentive and often stockpilled them to cast undispellable globals in a far future, the only items I forged were boosters, clams (a need in dom2) or SC pretender gear -except if I could have artefacts-, my mages had just the minimum number of gems to follow their script, and I summoned only endgame creatures (the problem was I wasn't very dangerous before).
Now it tends to be the exact contrary, I forge a lot more, summon in midgame, and often give gems to my battlemages even if they are not scripted to cast gem spells, and even with high gem income I rarely have stocks of more than 20 or 30 at the end of a turn (except when I plan to cast a global, and it's very rare if I don't have a natural very high level caster to protect it).
And you what are your tendencies ?

Interesting results I wasn't thinking early forging so popular, and forge in general more than troops summoning.
One third of the players not using rituals out of summmons and site searching seems rather huge also.

Hmm... what is considered a minimum amount and what protective amount for globals?

Minimum amount = the base cost or anything a level 9 caster can dispell or overwrite for base cost
Protective = far more

What do you mean by the level of dispeller? There is nothing like that in manual or description of Dispel. It just says that if someone spends like 50 additional gems for a global you need to put also 50 over base cost for Dispel.

Each level over the base required for casting counts as 5 additional gems, for both the globals and Dispel.

Manual p.88
One level above the required = 5 gems for dispell/overwrite mechanics.
So a level 9 astral caster dispells for base cost like if he added 30 gems.

Oh, they should put it into spell description. They should really upgrade many descriptions. I did not take that big manual with me to China, heh.
So you should put as many astral boosters as possible when casting Dispel?

Rituals are for the most part unnecessary in single player, so that might skew the results.

I've read somewhere that only natural levels count for dispells (but it isn't said in the manual). So I'm not sure.

That's an issue that needs to be cleared. If only natural levels count then will a N4 crone buffed to N5 suffer a penalty when her Gift of Health is being dispelled?

So you also get some bonus for casting global with higher level?

It's stated in manual
Dispel mechanics
Whenever Dispel is cast or a global tries to replace another for whatever reason, the two spells are compared. The total number of extra gems and the levels of the casters above their spells' requirements are compared according to the following formula:
+1 for each extra gem (above the requirement for casting)
+5 for each level of skill by the casting mage in the spell's path above the casting requirement
a DRN (single open-ended die) is added to each side. The side with the higher number wins.
