If an enchantment costs 70 gems and the person puts in 20 more, does it take the dispel cost (30 gems) plus 20 extra for a total of 50 gems or does it take 70 + 20 + 30?

30+20=50. But you still have to win the die rolls!

Only the extra gems counts, so it would be the total of 50. There's a random roll though and the caster level figures in. I think at +5 per level above minimum.

What is the dice? I though that just putting one more gem in dispel than in spell would be enough. I am stuck now for 6 months without manual http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

No manual here, but I believe it uses the standard dominion open ended opposed die rolls.
Extra gems in global + caster level bonus + roll vs
Extra gems in dispel + caster level bonus + roll.
No idea which way ties go.

Each magic level of the mage (both caster and dispeller) above required counts as 5 magic gems

since you get a bonus for levels over the spell level, do you get a penalty for levels under it?
say you want to cast mother oak with a n3 caster, with 2 boosters. The caster is 2 levels short(in base magic). And there have been threads stating only base levels count for dispelling.

I am not sure if base or current level is taken into account, but I believe there're no penalties. At least manual says nothing about this.
