View Full Version : Fracture running

Beset by the Madness of the Dreamlands on one side and the Living Dead on the other the many nations of the world formed a Great Alliance to survive. After years of brutal war the Great Alliance did triumph and seal shut both the Void Gate and the Gates of Death.

With madness banished and the dead at rest a new spirit of tolerance and reason suffused the land. United by their common struggle and weary of war, the peoples of the world sought to cherish what bound them together and negotiate their differences in a spirit of peace. The beliefs of all peoples were respected and freedom of conscience was accepted across the land. The men of Chelms studied the texts of old Arcoscephale and lead a renewal of thought and learning. The merchants of Marignon built great ships to establish trade across the seas that knew peace for the first time in Ages. Many peoples opened their lands to refugees from the vanished realm of Atlantis, and even in the wilds of Pangaea progress came with the long peace. But even in the light of this Golden Age there were low whispers in the shadows and the drip of Blood on eldrich alters.

Two centuries of peace did not dim the memories of the glory of Atlantis and while others studied books and built palaces the Atlanteans pursued plans of their own in the ice floes of the north and the Ziggurats of Mictlan. They found what they were looking for buried in ice and then they stuck- the Sky Priests were slaughtered and the old ways reborn in Mictlan. Where once they had been grateful refugees the Atlantians now ruled as haughty lords, while elsewhere they established a new city dedicated to the Cult of Bone.

The Sibyls of Arcoscephale were first to see the signs, but soon every mage learned the truth as dwindling forces of magic surged anew. The Wheel had turned and the dark whispers became a public roar- "THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!" The Dominion Wars had begun again.

++++++++++++++++++

The late age is not played much, and i think it's because people are intimidated by Dreamlands and Ashen Empire and/or don't like the low sites. At least that's why I favor the other eras. But I hate to see all those neato nation going unplayed, so here's a chance to play without the killer free spawn powers and with plenty of gems.

Settings:

Late Era, no Ermor, no R'lyeh

Is it possible to use RANDOM so that every player has at least ,let's say, 4 neighbour land provinces and that there are 4/5 provinces between capitols? I think that makes the game more interesting and avoids situation where turn 0 luck is the most important thing.

What do you think?

Tyrant
April 7th, 2008, 10:13 PM
This game will be called "Fracture"

@Karlem - i am not familiar with that util, but i did edit the map to no start provinces with less than 5 neighbors. It's possible that i missed some 'cause there's no graphical display for no-start, but i tried three times with all 17 nations and nothing came up. It's also a big map, so even if you are close to someone else's capitol there should be room on another side.

The victory conditions will be 20 one VP, 10 two VP and 5 three VP for a total of 55 with 25 the victory threshold. If anyone has a problem with this speak up now or never.

Three things you need to know about VPs-

1) They spread dominion for their owner.

2) The big map and lots of VP provinces will make it more difficult for a player to get a cheap win by pouncing on a bunch they can't hold with TP etc, but not impossible. In fact it's pretty likely that someone will go for it once they are in spitting distance. So, Beware the Pounce - fortify your VPs!

3) The distribution of the VP provinces is good and gosh darn random, so it's possible that you will end up in a situation where you win all your wars and generally do well but have a hard time winning because all the VPs are far away. That's just the way it is. To me the randomness is part of the charm, but sometimes it works out badly for some players.

The forum outage this weekend has slowed things down a bit, but we are ready to go once Llama sets it up.

llamabeast

They show up on the map as crowns- one, two or three depending on what they are worth, and you need 25 to win.

All the turns will say "resent" on the first turn 'cause of a quirk in the way Llama had to start the game, nothing to worry about.

Well, due to technical problems I actually can't load Dominions at home now (Hardy Heron seems to have frazzled my video card driver and it's being awkward), and the unusual victory point conditions make this game impossible to start via the command line as I would normally do. So I will try to start the game up tomorrow while I'm in the office (naughtily I have Dom3 installed on my work computer).

llamabeast
May 2nd, 2008, 02:28 PM
Right! Started! Twice, in fact!

The first time Pangaea wasn't included (it seems somehow kasnavada's pretender arrived after I copied the pretenders across from the server last night), but then I luckily noticed the mistake and restarted. So everyone: use the second file you received.

By the way the first turn appears to have been "resent" because it's not possible to start a game in the normal way with complex victory conditions. So I started it via the GUI, copied the files back to the server and asked it to resend all the files.

Okay, I hope everything is good this time. Sorry for the long wait while I was away.

By the way Tyrant, rather than me, will be the man to ask for things like delays and so on while the game is running.

Have fun,

llamabeast

llamabeast
May 2nd, 2008, 02:31 PM
Okay, this is why I should never, ever do server stuff when I'm knackered (I've been teaching all day, and am completely past it, and can't go home till I've sorted this because my computer at home can't open dominions).

The server's just sent out a turn 2 because I copied a number to the wrong place. Just ignore it and play turn 1 - I will roll the server back.

Hopefully all will be smooth from here! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/redface.gif

I staled the first turn as well. I am hoping that everyone did as I received turn 1 and 2 at the same time.

Hmmmm, although I just sent turn 1 in and the Llamaserver said it was fine. So I am a little confused. Should I send turn 2 in or not I wonder.

Oh, If you send in turn two the server rejects it, so I guess we are on turn one.

We are on turn one. If the server rejects your 2H file, request the turn be resent.

Xox, you use the wrong turn!

You got 3 turns. The one with the 2nd turns is wrong! Take the turn with turn 1 which was sent second.

Or just go to http://www.llamaserver.net/gameinfo.cgi?game=Fracture and use "Request turn resend". (i hope this work corectly after this turn chaos)

Just one questions, I think I read provinces with crowns also spread dominion, is this also so for Mictlan?

Cor2

Nihil,

I dont think they spread dominion. They are victory point provinces.

Tyrant said:
Three things you need to know about VPs-

1) They spread dominion for their owner.
2) ...

Tyrant said they do spread dominions, but I would like to know if this works for Mictlan the same way.

Neat, I never knew that.

AFAIK they don't spread your dominion, but they increase your god's dominion score by one. Which helps in spreading it.

Karlem

They spread dominion with power=5. Click on a temple and you'll see them there, it works for Mictlan too.

I don't have my manual at hand, but i'm pretty sure they spread dominion.

Looks like we ended up with graphs off, which is a bit dodgy in a VP game, but we are going to have to live with it, i'm not up for another restart.

I am interested in trading for 5 nature gems. I have air, death or water gems to trade in a 1on1 basis. Anyone interested please tell me so.

Atlantis is missed, played by Jazzepi.

I'm not sure the rest is correct after our restart. Please report if your name isn't in the list. It makes doplomacy easier. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Hello everyone, I'll be subbing for Caelum in this game for about two weeks and in fact I've already played three turns.

While Karlem filled me up pretty well regarding the status quo, I encourage you to send me a PM if there's some business, diplomatic/trade/whatever, needing to be sorted out between your nation and Caelum.

A very impressive pounce, well done calmon! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/eek.gif

As for the rest of you bums,is it bad form to quote yourself?

2) The big map and lots of VP provinces will make it more difficult for a player to get a cheap win by pouncing on a bunch they can't hold with TP etc, but not impossible. In fact it's pretty likely that someone will go for it once they are in spitting distance. So, Beware the Pounce - fortify your VPs!

Actually, i'm as guilty as everyone else- i left a 2 pointer undefended 'cause i thought it was Mictlans, dangnabit. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/Sick.gif

I count 12 in Marignon proper and 15 by TP which is 2 extra just to be on the safe side. I saw at least 2 others that were clear too, plus one of my own that had a fort building. Was that all in one turn?

Kind of a weird short game, but fun for me nonetheless. Thanks to Zenzei for subbing and, of course LLama for hosting!

Good game everyone and congrats to Calmon for the win! I certainly knew Marignon would try this but I didn't expect it to happen so soon and thus there were too many unforted VPs inside Caelum borders. Too bad I now didn't get to use my newly summonend earth/air elemental royalty, fog warriors provided entertainment many a time though. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Thanks guys! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

I was happy to take the required VPs in the last turn. Normally i don't like this sort of win condition because i don't like the thrill that anyone else do what i did http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif. It always depends people build up fortresses or not.

3 Turns ago i decided to try a VP win and used all my gems for some fighting equipment and mass teleports. I alchimist a lot and it was a little risky because i totally gave up my pre-prior strategy to produce a lot of blood stones.

Well i ended up with 29 VPs 14 in my own territory, 4 by attacking with flying demons/fallen angels and 11 via mage/demon teleport. So it worked for me!

Btw who dispelled my Forge of the Ancients? I didn't get a message that it was dispelled so i wonder.
