View Full Version : EmpiresRising MA game for new players - started

zenphos
April 9th, 2008, 05:12 AM
With the recent surfeit of EA and LA games going around I thought I would try to get a MA game going.
Currently looking for newish players, basically somewhere between 0 - 5 games. Or at least that is my skill level and would rather not be crushed by a pro.

With Llamabeast about to head off the details of the game need to be finalised.
So therefore the game details are as follows
Age - MA
Map - Parganos
No. of players - 8 (max)
Hosting - 24 hours for the 1st 10 turns then negotiable
Mods - Worthy Heroes, anyone who doesn't have it please let me know
Everything else - default
Victory conditions will be standard victory conditions.

So there are 3 slots left, as soon as 8 players have uploaded their pretenders the game should start automatically.
So put your name down and the nation you want.
Anyone who wants any of the above changed please speak up quickly because Llamabeast has a plane to catch.

Players and nations so far

Zenphos - Machaka
Wookie1977 - Abysia
Ossa - Vanheim
Frozen Falcon - Man
sum1lost - Pangaea
Unoptimized - Ermor
secretperson - C'tis
lebarjack - Ulm

For anyone who does not know how to get their game going here are some instructions

- Make sure you have the same mods enabled as the game you're playing in (Preferences->Mod Preferences) although only mods affecting pretender design, such as Conceptual Balance, actually matter
- Go to Game Tools -> Create a pretender god in Dominions. Don't set a password, since for PBEM games they're not helpful and occasionally annoying (e.g. if you need a sub)
- Go to the savedgames/newlords folder in the dominions directory, and find your pretender file (e.g. late_pythium_0.2h)
- E-mail the file to: pretenders[ at ]llamaserver[ dot ]net
- Crucially, you must have the game name 'EmpiresRising' in the subject line of your e-mail

The server should send you a confirmation e-mail when it receives your pretender. Also you can see what pretenders have been received so far at www.llamaserver.net (http://www.llamaserver.net) . In fact I recommend checking the site out anyway - it will be helpful all game.

Looks good though would prefer normal victory conditions rather than victory point

Wookie1977

Lock me in as Abysia please

Ossa
April 9th, 2008, 09:39 AM
I'd join as MA Vanheim.

zenphos
April 9th, 2008, 09:43 AM
Well we could go 75% victory points. That way you have to be the clear winner but you don't have to track everyone down wipe them out completely.
I just don't like the idea of spending 2 or 3 weeks digging the last few pretenders out of their fortresses.
Especially if the losers get upset and don't have their turns.
But then I don't know what the victory conditions are for standard victory. But I assume it means you have to kill every pretender and take every province.

llamabeast
April 9th, 2008, 11:56 AM
MP games never reach the point of trying to conquer every last province - that would be very dull. All the other players will surrender when the winner is clear, since no-one enjoys a hopeless game. So there is no particular need for something like 75% victory points.

If you were going to have VPs I would recommend capital-only ones, since people will always defend their capitals properly. I don't have any real opinion on whether the game is better with or without them though.

FrozenFalcon
April 9th, 2008, 03:20 PM
I'll join as Man

zenphos
April 9th, 2008, 06:31 PM
Llamabeast has been in touch in regards to when he heads off on holidays leaves reasonably soon which means we don't have the usual 5 days to recruit people.
But anyway hopefully we will get another 4 today/tonight and we can play an 8 player on Parganos.
So no VP's, standard victory.

zenphos
April 9th, 2008, 06:34 PM
PS It looks like you can upload your pretenders already.

llamabeast
April 9th, 2008, 07:15 PM
If you can't get enough players in time I can set it up to start when it either has N pretenders, or at a set date/time, in my absence. That should probably be fine.

sum1lost
April 10th, 2008, 02:21 AM
MA Pangaea, please. I've only finished one set of 3 games, and had started another set when I lost access to dominions for some time, so if I don't qualify, fair enough.

zenphos
April 10th, 2008, 05:24 AM
Well by my reckoning that gives you 4 and a half games so you definitely qualify. But the 0 to 5 games is really just a guideline. I just don't want guys who have played heaps of games getting on crushing the newbies so to speak.

By the way with Llamabeasts imminent departure I have had to make some executive decisions in regards to the game.
I have edited the top post to reflect this.

llamabeast
April 10th, 2008, 05:29 AM
I also recommend that you don't allow water nations. I have a version of my Parganos map with "dead seas" which means the seas provide no income or gems. I think that works well.

zenphos
April 10th, 2008, 06:28 AM
Sounds good. No sea nations. So I assume everyone will need to download your map. Or at least those that don't have it?

Wookie1977
April 10th, 2008, 08:37 AM
It is all looking good can't wait to start... And Llama is right about victory points, no one is going to keep playing a hopeless war against a clear winner just to spite them.
This is not Dawn of War

Heya! I'm as new as they come http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif. Anyway, I would like to play Ermor. If you would not mind PMing me the heroes mod and the map I would much appreciate it.

secretperson
April 10th, 2008, 10:00 PM
I'd like to play as C'tis if possible please

lebarjack
April 11th, 2008, 03:20 AM
Can I play with a nation soon to be determined?
I will make some quick test in the next hour and then upload a pretender.

zenphos
April 11th, 2008, 04:50 AM
The map is now downloadable from the original post.
The worthy heroes mod can be downloaded here
http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/threads/showflat.php?Cat=&Number=560854&page=0&view=collap sed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1
Instructions are in the zip files, if I remember correctly, but basically unzip the 2 map files into the maps directory and the worthy heroes mod into the mods directory.
I can't remember if you have to create a mods directory or not.

zenphos
April 11th, 2008, 04:56 AM
I now count 8 players so upload your pretenders and we will get going.

lebarjack
April 11th, 2008, 05:04 AM
I will give a try to the proud nation of Ulm

secretperson
April 12th, 2008, 04:04 AM
Well, I have to say im getting pretty excited for my first MP game! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif looks like we have 5/8 who have uploaded pretenders. let's get those other 3 in and let's get this game going! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif

zenphos
April 12th, 2008, 04:14 AM
The difference is amazing between playing MP and playing the computer.
Having to wait for each turn really increases the tension.

secretperson
April 12th, 2008, 10:10 AM
7/8 now- almost there!

zenphos
April 12th, 2008, 10:39 AM
Lets hope so. Only Ermor left to upload. I might send him a PM and see what he is doing. He might be having trouble working out the uploading and what not.
By the way Llamabeast who normally starts the games when they are full is on holidays so set it to auto start when 8 pretenders are uploaded.
Unfortunately if there is a problem with the auto starter or server he won't be back until april 27 to fix it.

Wookie1977
April 13th, 2008, 02:34 AM
How is Ermor going with his pretender?

zenphos
April 13th, 2008, 03:46 AM
Don't know.

I have PM'ed him but no response. Maybe it may be time to look for a replacement?
Not that I want to, especially on someones first MP game but it would be good to get started.
What does everyone else think? Wait another day, or 2 or a week?

lebarjack
April 13th, 2008, 03:52 AM
Well, I would like to start as soon as we can. Unoptimized didn't post since 04/11. We can give him a couple of hours to show up. After that, I think we should find a replacement.

Wookie1977
April 13th, 2008, 04:15 AM
Yeah I reckon go with a replacement, if he posts before we find a replacement then hes in, if not we go with the new guy, whoever he may be

I seem to be having a problem- I received the first turn file, created a directory for it in my savedgames and attempt to load it up via "play existing game", get to the point where I select the game and click play and I get a crash to desktop :/

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong here, anyone got some insight? I tried having the file resent with the same result.

secretperson
April 13th, 2008, 07:01 PM
Just tried it again- to clarify, I select the game and it goes to "C'tis- turn 1" or something similar then and crashes after I hit play at that point. Other existing games I have seem to be working fine. Perhaps my file is corrupted?

sum1lost
April 14th, 2008, 12:23 AM
I had it too- and fixed it. The problem is that one of the files in the map pack (Attatched to the first post) has the wrong name. Change 'parganos.tga' to 'parganos_llama3.tga' by renaming the file. It worked for me.

secretperson
April 14th, 2008, 04:23 AM
Hmm, I'm pretty stumped. I tried as you said, sum1lost, but still experiencing the same problem. I am on a Mac by the way, if that matters. I can also create a game using Lllama's map and it seems to work fine so I'm wondering if my file itself is corrupted or if it is a Mac-PC compatability issue. Could I forward my trn file to someone to see if they can get it to work?

Wookie1977
April 14th, 2008, 08:10 AM
Why not forward to sum1lost as he fixed his same problem, if does not reply you can forward to me

Wookie1977
April 14th, 2008, 09:58 AM
Just tried it and it worked fine,
I emailed it back to you after I had done a coupole of things and end turn

secretperson
April 14th, 2008, 10:06 AM
arghhhhhhh, Now I get the option to continue where I left off or redo and then crash :/ I guess the file itself is fine- maybe I'm having problems with the map setup. I tried messing with the maps earlier, moving them out etc and would result in a similiar crash when I tried to play a game that was missing the map. Or there's a Mac compatibility issue?

Anyway,
I put the trn file inside my dominions3 dir and inside a dir named EmpiresRising. I have worthy heroes 1.8 mod enabled. I have the two files I downloaded from the attachment on the first post- parganos_llama3.map and parganos_llama3.tga inside the maps directory. Does that sound all right?

Wookie1977
April 14th, 2008, 10:12 AM
Yes sounds all good, what happens when you continue where left off and then end turn?

Empires rising should be in savedgames folder, all sounds good

secretperson
April 14th, 2008, 10:15 AM
Yeah, EmpiresRising dir is in savedgames.

I can't even get into where I see the actual map, the game just exits/crashes regardless of choosing redo turn or start where I left off :/

zenphos
April 14th, 2008, 10:21 AM
Hmmmm,

ask for a turn resend then try using that turn instead, Just log onto
http://www.llamaserver.net/index.cgi
and go into EmpiresRising and down the bottom it says Request turn resend
If that doesn't work it may well be that Mac and PC games are incompatible.

secretperson
April 14th, 2008, 10:22 AM
Yeah, I've tried resending it several times http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/frown.gif

secretperson
April 14th, 2008, 10:24 AM
Could I ask another favor? Could you try sending me the 2 map files?

Do you have an email address? I will get them out of my maps directory.

Wookie1977
April 14th, 2008, 10:27 AM
Is there anything on the faq on the llama server or you could try reinstalling your dominions 3, or ask someone who knows alot more about computers than I do

secretperson
April 14th, 2008, 10:32 AM
Yeah, I've checked the faq several times and tried reinstalling too http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/tongue.gif I'm pretty stumped as well! But we're narrowing it down it seems- atleast it's not the trn file that's bad

zenphos
April 14th, 2008, 10:33 AM
Ok, try downloading the new attachment.

It could have been the original attachment was screwed so I have put up a brand new one.

Will also email to your email address.

secretperson
April 14th, 2008, 10:36 AM
Yes yes yes! that was the problem! I was missing the file parganos_llama_deadseas.map. Thanks so much for the help guys, I'll get my 2h file sent in to llama server asap. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

zenphos
April 14th, 2008, 10:45 AM
Anyone else having a problem download and unzip the new attachment. The old one seems like it might have been screwed up.

It seems to have fixed secretpersons problems.
By the way after this turn we will switch to 24 hour hosting for the 1st 10 turns. After that if people need more time just post here.

Wookie1977
April 14th, 2008, 10:46 AM
That is great news, good not to lose someone in the 1st turn

zenphos
April 14th, 2008, 10:48 AM

secretperson
April 14th, 2008, 11:13 AM
Just curious- Is this game set up as quick host?

sum1lost
April 14th, 2008, 05:14 PM
I think it is quickhost.

Quick suggestion for everyone: If you're the last person to turn in your turn, wait a few minutes for it to process, and then turn in the next turn as well, since it will arrive soon after.

zenphos
April 15th, 2008, 05:33 AM
Just a reminder, you get 48 hours to send in the first turn, after that the game will host every 24 hours whether you have your turn in or not.

FrozenFalcon
April 18th, 2008, 07:41 PM

zenphos
April 19th, 2008, 11:58 AM
I wouldn't worry too much. At some point everyone will look at the server list and realise everyone is waiting on them.
The important thing to remember is not to make them wait twice in a row. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
I am playing a different game at the moment were some guy is about to get triple teamed because he is always the last guy to submit his turn. In fact he would get quad teamed except the 4th guy can't get his armies in to fight.

After much studying and research, the Oracle in the Woods, Qiagen, the replicator of DNA, has discovered that of the kingdoms of the land, only 3 (Man, Ermor, and Ulm) have access to spies or bards that can use the "cause unrest" ability. Of those, only one (Man) is to be found anywhere near our lands. Therefore, Qiagen has ordered the forest folk to spill forth and fall upon the kingdom of Man.

Hosting has now been reset to 24 hours again. After this round of turns the change will take place. So although it says turns are due in by tuesday the game will host as soon as all turns are in and then it will be 24 hour hosting.

zenphos
April 27th, 2008, 10:45 AM
Well things seem to be heating up. Armies poised all around and fights about to break out. Very exciting times.

Just to let everyone know, if you start to struggle to get your turns in, they should be starting to become a little more complex now, just post or PM me for an extension.
Also I would like to keep 24 hour hosting for as long as possible but feel free to post here if you want it changed.

In future can people please PM me if they need a hosting postponed. Or post to the board more than a day in advance.
I do check my PM's quite regularly but do not check the threads every day. Especially if there is not active posting by the anyone, e.g. this is the first post in 7 days.
I only just spotted this and if I had gone to bed, like I probably should have, I would have missed it and poor old wookie would have staled.

Jonarryn has permanently replaced sum1lost as Panagaea. He is not a noobie but I figure after the brutality that has swept the lands neither is anyone else anymore. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
Current situation stands, I think anyway.
Ermor, Vanheim and Abysia at war with Panagaea.

Zenphos! I remember fondly the days that you merrily tromped your god around my capital with your big spiders. You will be terribly missed.

In other news; the Ermorian press would like to point out that this Jonarryn fellow is the jerkiest jerk ever.

PS. In all seriousness though, that was a great way to handle my big army. I can tell I'm going to learn quite a bit from fighting you.

Earthquakex3 + Foul Vapors = lots of dead thaumaturgs = lots of undead and living statues dissolving without magical leadership.

Actually, the foul vapors was a bit overkill, and didn't last long after the caster died from the earthquake. Oops. Anyhow, now I just have to deal with Ermor's bajillion other troops and all will be well =)

Hey folks. Due to some personal matters, I am forced to withdraw from all the games I am currently playing. I've chosen to set myself to AI (which I normally hate to do) rather than look for a substitute because I don't want to delay the game any longer than I already have. Thank you for your understanding.

lebarjack
July 23rd, 2008, 01:12 PM
I really think that setting yourself to AI without letting us finding a sub will simply kill this game...

zenphos
July 24th, 2008, 05:31 AM
It has been done already. Unfortunately I cannot now replace him with someone else. Which I guess leaves Ermor, Ulm and AI Pangaea to fight it out.
If people want I am happy enough to see if Llamabeast has the ability to unAI pan and let us find a replacement.

Well this sort of stinks. I was really enjoying the battles with you John! You have my best wishes and I hope that everything works out.

Now, I'd prefer to not give up the game, considering how much fun it's been so far. Is there a way for Llama to start the game from the turn before Pan went AI?

If Pan has to stay AI, then I'd happily keep the game going. Hell, I can dispell his nasty globals so that we can commence with the eating. I was only not dispelling them because I figured they were causing Ulm more trouble than myself http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif.

lebarjack
July 27th, 2008, 05:10 AM
Well, if you think it will be fun, I agree to continue the game.

But I don't find really fun awakening some morning and realizing your allies, with whom you had a 6 turn NAP, suddenly turn in a bloodthirsty AI who immediately starts to attack you.

Pangea's globals weren't a problem for me until he turned AI and began to attack me.

You can now roll back the game using a new admin option. So you want to do something like:

- Roll back one turn
- Change e-mail address of johnarryn's nation to the sub's address
- Get sub to send in a turn
- Force hosting

After rolling back, it will look like no-one has sent in a turn, but in fact all your 2h files from last turn will be there and will be used. This is actually handy - none of you should send in a new turn - having seen the future, it would be distinctly dodgy. So you will be able to see that no-one but the new sub sends a new turn in.

I hope that made some sense. It's hard to explain clearly! But anyway, the point is it can all be done.

Awesome thanks Llama. I will try roll back the turn.
Now all we need to do is find a sub.
Is everyone happy for this to happen or would people prefer leave Pan as AI?
I will continue to postpone hosting until everyone has had a chance to reply.

A thousand times yes! I have a hard time playing computer opponents, because I quickly fall into the "Durr...throw hordes of orderless dudes" mindset. I will happily wait untill a sub is found.

Vanheim has just lost and I guess Machaka will soon too http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
Maybe one of those two players want to play Pangea in this game?

In this case, though, I imagine lebar and I will want to re-do our turns. I don't know about him, but I would have done very different things if the Pans were not AI zombies. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Has someone tried PMing Ossa? He may want to take over. I will take over but only if no one else can be found. But I think it should be easy enough to find someone to sub in for the winning nation.

Hmmmmm. This does not seem to be working. Does anyone know what turn Pan went AI?

I think we must rewind to turn 68.

OK. I will keep rewinding until Pan is back in the game.

Bad news. Game will only roll back to turn 69.

Hmmmmm. Well I was wrong. Just need to wait a while for things to take effect. I have now rolled back to turn 67 and still no sign of Pan.
Not sure if I am doing something wrong but the way Llama has set it up it looks pretty easy. I will continue investigating and post when I have some news.

If a sub could be found for Aquarium, I'd be willing to come back here.

Maybe I could sub for you in aquarium? But 1st I have to work out how to sub you for Pan. Another to PM to trusty old Llamabeast may be needed.

Hrm. Well, keep us updated, and thanks for all of the hard work! By the way, our early game battles were awesome Zenphos. You easily had me withen an inch of my life.

I know but I got cocky. It was fun game though. Seems there is a problem with the roll back procedure. Llamabeast is looking into it and will hopefully be able to fix it up.
You guys will know as soon as I do, unless Llamabeast posts something here and you guys read it before me. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif

Right, success, it's all fixed - you're back on turn 69, and Pan is still in the game. You should just have got an e-mail from me explaining stuff. Sorry about the mayhem!

Thanks again Llama. I think Leberjack will be very happy to not have to fight Pan, yet anyway. And he gets the pleasure of crushing my last few armies all over again. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
So sum1lost did you want to rejoin the game?

Yes.

Sum1lost is back in as Pan. I suggest we just all pretend the last couple of turns didn't happen and resubmit our turns.
It is to my mind the simplest and easiest way.
Unless anyone is unhappy with this in which case speak up and let us know what your preferences are.

Can I request one more rollback, since Jon Arryn apparently staled turn 68?

I reckon we just play again from turn 69 and get the game going again.

I would like to apologize to everyone in here who I've no doubt inconvenienced through my staling. I got stuck without almost any internet access the last two weeks with very short warning, and unfortunately, the forums were down in that time. I was able to get a friend of mine to sub for me in one game, but he only had time to do that one, unfortunantely leaving all of you high and dry.

I will stop playing dominions for the couple of month to come. I have found someone willing to replace me in this game. Who shall I give the new email to register on llamaserver ?

This is a great game and I had a lot of fun. If someone is interested, I am looking for a replacement in another game, featuring EA Ulm and a forging powerhouse ;)

Hi Leberjack,
If you are still around that is. I am still admin, although am happy to hand over the reins. I can switch you to an alternate email address. I am currently subbing for wookie who should be back in a week.

This game appears to be more or less over. Ermor went AI two turns ago, and lost around 1800 troops last turn, and many more mages, in assaults on my invading armies which have been cracking forts every other turn. Ulm hasn't taken a turn since a few turns after I Most Treacherously backstabbed him. (which turned out to be a horrible idea, as my air queens all died and my pretender managed to suicide on his own Astral Corruption. (which probably took out a number of Ulm's higher level mages)

Even if Ulm came back into the game now, burden of time is probably well on its way to killing most of his mages, and my armies have had several more or less unopposed turns to do their own damage to him.

If it is alright with Ulm, I would like to request that the game admin end the game.

OOC: My apologies to Ulm for backstabbing him like that. To be fair, it came at a point when we were the only two serious contenders left.

This was an excellent game. I learned a great deal myself about what to do, and more importantly, what NOT to do :). My hat is off to you for an excellent game.
