Finally! So I'm ready to start but which Ulm am I? On the server list I mean.
Also since I've only played PBEM before, how do I take my turn?
Rathar
April 12th, 2008, 07:55 PM
I assume you put a password on your pretender so the one which lets you in with your password will be the one you are.
There are two ways to take your turn. One is to connect to the server it will download your turn and then you can disconnect and go to play an existing game. When you are done with the turn, reconnect to the server and it will upload your turn.
The other way is to connect to the server, tell it that yes you do still wish to play your nation then click on your nation name below all the national flag symbols. This will take you right into the game where you can do your stuff. When finished hit end turn and voila you are done.
Please note that if you use the second method and you do most or some of your turn and click save game and quit (under options) it will treat is as a completed turn. So if everyone else gets their turn in the turn will process and your undone things will sit there drooling.

Btw, are we doing anything for turn notification - posting here or email?
Tuidjy
April 13th, 2008, 01:47 PM
Guys, there is a WEIRD problem with the game. At least the first three
nation in the list are NOT password protected. I usually try them all
to make sure that no one forgot to put a password, and as I hit nations
1, 2 and 3, I got their turns.
In a game that has such strict communication rules, this is enough to
ruin the game. PLEASE, PLEASE restart.
And let everyone make sure that their nations passwords work. I have
never seen this happen.
Ylvali
April 13th, 2008, 01:59 PM
Could be those players simply skipped making passwords and in that case it ain´t susch a big deal.
If passwords have disappeared somehow then of course we´d have to restart.
Tuidjy
April 13th, 2008, 02:10 PM
I'm one of these players. I do not remember skipping a password in the last
four years I've been playing Dom 2/3. Using catgod, Minevra shows a password.
It's possible I uploaded an earlier version, but seriously, do you want to ask
yourself, every turn, whether someone will blank your orders, or peek at your
position? I know I do not, and if 3 of the first 3 nations are unprotected,
what are the chances they are the only ones?
Ylvali
April 13th, 2008, 03:06 PM
In that case I might second a restart. But it would require redesigning and resending all pretenders with no password = big delay again.
I don´t think I would be that worried about abuse really. I trust the participants. I have another game without password and I dont worry a bit. Still I guess it could make a lot of bad feelings if accusations of abuse were thrown around the forum, might be better to be secure.
Lets hear some more opinions on this.

CUnknown
April 22nd, 2008, 06:26 PM
Oh, yeah, sorry I forgot to mention that I re-set the timer. I didn't want anyone to stale. When it gets close to the end of the time, I get nervous. It seems like we should be able to avoid people staling on turn 2, heh.
Although perhaps we should just switch to 48-h quickhost and have it be a firm deadline. Although when that happens, I think people say "Oh I can take my turn tomorrow." I think people will take their turns faster with a 24-h clock, even if I am going to extend it if they don't. I'm not sure.
Instead of extending it like that, I should turn off the timer and pm the people who haven't taken their turns yet, I think.

Evil nations have definitely been a little gunshy, at least to begin. I wonder if that's because of the no communication, or if we happened to get more aggressive players on Good rather than Evil.
Who's got a theory?
CUnknown
May 4th, 2008, 12:47 AM
I think it may be the Secret Enemy thing.. people might not want to attack and risk themselves if they might end up losing the game even if Evil wins, because they never eliminated their Secret Enemy.
Also, Good is sort of forced to attack, given the set-up. From the perspective of Good, the map is a very unfriendly place.
Calling all Good and Neutral nations! We must oppose the Evil threat, or it will dominate this world. The time to act is now! Balance must be acheived, before Good is extinguished.

well, it's 99% mostly due to no communication...secret enemy thing is not really a big deal. but no communications? that takes balance out. Actually the map is a very, very friendly place for good nations.
Hoplosternum
May 4th, 2008, 09:56 AM
LOL, well I think just the opposite.
Evil has lots of advantages:
1) Many of the Evil nations are natural rushers/strong early. There are few good nations that could have been and only one is. Most Evils are one v one better than the goods at this stage.
2) Secret Enemy is a disaster for good. Even worse if the secret enemies are not next to each other as I suspect. This means that the Evils are actively discouraged from fighting each other. So they have safe borders and silent allies. There is no evil v evil conflict. So good is heavily outnumbered by on average tougher evil nations.
3) Diplomacy is not that useful here. The goods cannot negotiate with the evils and with the Secret Enemy couldn’t convince them to fight amongst themselves even if they could. So you can’t get your enemies enemy on your side. Because he has none. All the goods can do is chat amongst themselves http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif Compare this to a game like the upcoming Megagame. Imagine if your enemy could negotiate with others and you couldn’t! It would be game ending. But here its effects are small.
4) It is really hard to help anyone who is not your immediate neighbour, and with the number of enemies each good has often even helping them is tough. So in military terms we are largely fighting on our own. We can trade items and gold but that doesn’t increase the number of either and being boxed in by a ring of foes means we all need them now. We can’t specialise research much either. Everyone with combat mages needs those multiple paths. Even Construction needs multiple Good nations to research. We can’t leave it all to Ulm (the natural forger) due to his limited paths. So what advantage does this give us over Evil who can trade with Neutral for items anyway? And while we have little to summon due to game restrictions we can’t summon for each other anyway. At least none of us have to waste points on blood http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
5) If we survive in to the mid game the total lack of Thugs will be huge. Either as national commanders or because we cannot summon death or blood leaders. Most nations with national thugs - Agartha, the Giants, ones with decent national summons etc - were not possible picks.
This doesn’t mean that Good has no chance. Pythium and/or Arco have decent mid-end games so if they make it that far they could do well, even sneak a win. The mechanics then will work for them. If a couple of Evils are dead then most Evils don’t want them to die as that means they lose too. Nor will the neutrals be able to abandon them as they to lose if they die at that point. So they have numerous 'allies'. But the 'good' team aspect doesn't help them at all.
But as a Team game the map and mechanics of the game don’t work. Good can’t help each other much and Evil and the Neutrals are not in teams.
If you look at the graphs you will see that most of the goods are doing badly. Some very badly http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif Three of the five goods net lost provinces last turn.
The good team made a lot of strategic mistakes. Pretender design, nations picked etc. But the deck is massively stacked against us whatever we had done. ‘Team’ good has no chance with this set up, but it is possible when a Good nation will survive a long time due to the game mechanics.

CUnknown
May 4th, 2008, 01:21 PM
I think Good made a lot of mistakes and had some bad luck.. we could be a lot more competitive right now in different circumstances. I don't think the game concept is necessarily fundamentally flawed.. but it would take more tries at this type of game to see. It's definitely not clear that it is fundamentally balanced, anyway. Evil definitely seems to have an advantage over Good, so far.
Fal
May 4th, 2008, 01:29 PM
yes I agree, I have sent plenty of scouts around the world this time and I noticed good nations have definitely made some bad mistakes in the initial expansion phase. I don't think the concept is fundamentally flawed, but certain aspects can be tweaked...let's fight on and see.

It sounded like Foodstamp set up secret enemies purely randomly. If so, I suspect that one or two evils are next to a secret enemy and the others are not. At least, that's the impression I am under.

Hey all! Posting here because I have a problem!
After the long time it took to start this game, my time has come to move to japan within the next week. While by itself not a problem, we are too soon in the game for me to keep participating every 24 hours past next week.
I will probably need a perm sub for abysia who isnt bad at the nation. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif I wanted to post in here first before I make a post about it in the general forum. But I will do that next too if you all feel it is as appropriate as i do.

The game might be over by next week, man. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif
Well, the Neutral nations will still probably be in it, but Good will likely be all but destroyed in 7 turns.
Maybe after some Goods are eliminated, they can switch to the winning side and take over Abysia. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Hmm, there's not much I can add to this except to add that this type of game is inherently hard to balance. Maybe we'll get it right the next time around. Unfortunately, having a large number of allies in Dom 3 introduces a lot of inefficiencies since you have to spend a whole turn sending gold or gems or items between each other. And having forts in provinces next to your ally also hurt you because you cannot get resources from their provinces. Maybe with more space and time to expand it would not be such an issue because then allies will not have to worry about micromanaging a very small pool of gems and gold in an early war.
Also, some of the evil nations getting lucky enough to start in the middle of high income grasslands (like Abysia and Ermor and Lanka) has also skewed the balance a lot. If we do this again, it would be important to carefully consider the map and maybe build a custom map for the game. I'm not too unhappy about it though. I'd consider this game a beta test, I think games with such large teams are uncommon, and therefore it will take a good deal of testing to get this type of game balanced.

Let's see how the game plays out before deciding it's over and things are unbalanced please. AFAIK goods are still around, even if in bad shape, and neutrals fare fairly well so...
IMO the main problem with goods and evils is they are fundamentaly at an advantage at different stage of the game.
Goods should have a growing advantage as time passes due to synergies increasing while evils should have an advantage at start by sheer numbers and postponing of secret enemies wars.
And that's exactly what we get.
Besides, neutrals are supposed to balance out things in middle...well, we're just entering mid-game, I don't see how we can judge anything at this point.

I know I am complaining :p But I don't mean any criticism by it. This was an experiment. It is hard to balance these type of games. When we were planning the game it was not clear to me at least that it would be so uneven.
And as with all team games it's been fun and interesting discussing strategy and tactics within the team. Even though it has been clear for some time that we would lose quickly.
But this game clearly isn't very balanced. It doesn't seem to be that much fun for all the Evils either as some of them are complaining too!
I am definitely up for another themed team game after this. But I think having everyone in teams and allowing diplomacy between teams would have been better.
Kheldron
May 7th, 2008, 02:51 AM
you know, in real life, when you've got a war ( cold or not) going on between two nations, if they still want to communicate they use intermediaries.
In this game you can also use them, and guess what, they're called Neutrals...

very true, good nation will gain advantage later on in the game. That's why i chose Lanka, which is naturally good at rushing, knowing that time is not on evil's side, I played rather aggressively this time. some good nations have been quite incompetent in the initial expansion phase, but they made their own mistakes, can't blame the game balance.
I personally don't think this game can be balanced. If the game is to start over however, IMO the good nations don't need to be next to each other, which might be better for them. and maybe have less evil players - they are going to be allied anyways, maybe ban double 9 blessing as well. And I still think secret enemy is a stupid idea and isn't going to change anything, say if we were to use secret enemy this time, my two enemies is located no where near me and even if they were I would still rush the good nations out before I attack them.
IndyPendant
May 7th, 2008, 10:40 AM
Heh. Another thing to consider too: we have spent posts and posts making much on how evil gets the early game advantage, but good will gain a huge advantage late game, when their synergies start to truly pay off.
Now. If you were playing evil, and heard that, what would *you* do? I don't know about you, but I would be thinking "Right. Top priority? Get good out of the game before they grow too powerful."
What good needs to do in a game like this is strategize for beating off the hordes of enemies early game so they can survive to end game. Perhaps with an SC pretender, or maybe a double-bless of their own.
I am curious though; I started too far away from most goods to see. What were these 'horrible mistakes' everyone seems to agree good made?
CUnknown
May 7th, 2008, 10:48 AM
I agree with Fal.. I don't think the game itself was unbalanced for sure.. (although maybe the map set-up was) and that Good made some mistakes. We could have done a much better job, even given the map and everything.
I don't think we should ban the double-9 blessing, Fal. You are doing everything you are supposed to be doing, it's just that we should have defended better. We should have had a plan for when Lanka and Ermor appeared on our borders in serious numbers on turn 9. We didn't.
Kheldron - we will be continuing to play this game. I will keep fighting until the end!! But, given some of the events unfolding in recent turns, that end is approaching for Good.
We might be able to survive with maybe half our number (2 or 3 players) alive out of the original 5. The problem is, no matter what the Neutrals do at that point, I'm still pretty sure the Evils will press and finish us off. But, we'll have to see how it goes.
If anything, for next game (if we do another one) we should play on a slightly larger map or with slightly fewer players. Good would have done much, much better had we had maybe even 2-3 more turns before meeting the enemy.

I wonder that, too, IndyPendant. I must be on the wrong side of the map, cause I don't see any horrible mistakes on good's part.
Fal
May 7th, 2008, 11:49 AM
I haven't seen any fatal mistakes either, but I've seen good being very slow in expansion. I assume the expansion phase must have been a chaos and not coordinated between players, many rich provinces were left unattended, despite the fact they are very lightly guarded (I almost tempted to attack some provinces with my scout!). defense in choke points was not established timely; to my surprise the nations bordering evil seems doing a lot of early research/site searching instead of harassing their enemies. Pythium was very 'timely' attacked by a bunch of barbarians (HAHAHA) but he also made a number of tactical blunders.
Other than these I don't know what other disasters have struck the good. But they could recover, the war is far from over yet.

TNN is fine. We had some bad luck when so-called Indie 3 settings handed us some lemons in the form of an elephant rich, then a heavy cavalry rich province – not at all what our test games told us to expect. But otherwise, we continue to fight the good fight. Spirits are high, despite the whining that we have learned to tune out. It is all about having fun, even in the face of doom.
And leaving Sauro’s hydras stranded on their way to lift the Arcos siege alone will make this game worth having played.

Frankly, the game has come to a pace at which I'm starting to forget it at times, which is as bad as I can get as a geek ^^
CU, please make it automated so as to speed people a bit. 48h schedule was what was agreed upon at start and the game isn't so advanced that we need a 72h or 96h timer I think.
But it may be just me so enthralled in this game that I can't wait ? ;-)

I had to restart my computer, that's why the timer reset. You're probably right that I should start letting people stale if necessary to speed up this game.
However, with Abysia gone, and no password in sight, we still have a problem which will delay us. I'm not sure what to do about it, either. Foodstamp has seen the entire map... it's not quite fair that he stay on as Abysia. I mean, it would be the same if we just gave Baalz the master password to take Abysia's turns with.
We could do that, but as much as we trust Baalz, I'm not sure team Good would be happy with that solution.
I guess that is an option.. if this goes on any longer, we will take that option, I guess.

It looks like the server just crashed because someone (Pythium, I believe) loaded up the turn using the most recent patch. I haven't updated the server yet (I will after this current turn hosts). Please take your turn using 3.15 for one more turn. Again, sorry for the delay.

I took my turn awhile ago before the patch, but patched a couple days ago, then connected to the server today to check on things and it must have auto uploaded. I am not really sure how to go back and take the turn on a pre-patch basis. Argh.

I don't think it was you, DonCorazon.. Did it crash on you? If so, I guess it was you. I removed Pythium's 2H file and the server was able to go back up, so I think it was him.

I suppose it won't hurt to patch? The thing is, half the people already have loaded up their turns using the previous patch.. will that cause problems if I patch?

So do we upload our turns in 3.17 or 3.15? I don't want to crash the server. :\
Also, I checked the server last night and it was working, but it seems to be down again today. Can anyone else connect?

It seems easier to patch it and have those with old patch turns redo them than for the rest to figure out a way to uninstall a patch.

Okay, new turn up. I am going away for the week (but I found a sub). I will turn off the game timer while I am away, quickhost on. So if my internet spasms out again, it's not a big deal, no one will miss a turn.
I have checked the weather, looks like there is a chance of thunderstorms thursday and friday. It is possible that my house might lose power on one of those days.
I am putting a sign on my computer as well (roommates do not use!).
So hopefully the server will remain up at least until thursday.

It must be obvious to many but I wonder if everyone know that this game can be played via a simple USB key, and so from any computer ? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/cool.gif
It only takes 500Mo or so and doesnt need an uber quad-core nvidia-buffed machine, so basically any of you who goes on a trip and have any acces to internet during his trip should be able to play. At least if he wants to http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/redface.gif

Tuidjy, if you get a chance, could you let us know how things are and when you may be back from your trip? People have been asking about you. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/happy.gif
Also, I found a funny bug. When I click on EA Sauro's flag in the screen with all the colored flags where it says "GlobalWar Turn 25", the game crashes. Does this happen for anyone else? The game does not crash if I click on anyone else's flag.

I'm sorry you reached that point Indy, more so since I'm really interested in this game.
This leads me to some questions (vote?) I'd like to ask :
1/ Would it be so hard to have all good subing for each other if needed since they're already allied and can share everything in the game ?
2/ Can we put back the timer and NEVER EVER, under any circumstance, put it off again ?
3/ Can anyone who knows he's going out for a trip (business or not) decide in advance if he's going to be able to play or please please warn us in advance so we can look for a sub?
And as I said in a previous post, the game can be played via a simple USB key on any computer with internet access.
Again, I'm not trying to stress anyone. I'm just looking for solutions to avoid losing fast-playing motivated players.

Hi Kheldron,
This has been a learning game for the balance of the format for the game organiser. I can see why he has kept stopping the timer. But I think in general it has been a mistake as the game has drifted a lot.
And once you have started stopping the game for one person you it's hard to then refuse another request. And looking at the boards it seems fairly hard to get subs, especially temporary ones (??)
But perhaps the stopping is something not to be done again unless everyone has signed up for a relaxed game?

If you are Pythium, you are the last. But the server is down at the moment, and not on a force host schedule, so you should not have any problem getting your turn in. Just be sure to let the host know when he gets back that you need to take your turn.

I think the problem with this is that there would be a CD key conflict. See http://www.shrapnelcommunity.com/threads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=dom3&Number=609160&fpart=1 &PHPSESSID= for more information.
However, I think the host might be able to to play more than one nation from the same machine, but am not sure.
