I just lost a pretender god (Lord of the wild) with a defense stat of 22 against some lousy wolf tribe warriors. My protection wasn't very good, but I simply don't understand why they were even able to hit me so often. They've an attack skill of just 11 with two daggers. I never had so much trouble with my Kraken although it had much less defense and the protection also wasn't better. Is this normal?

Every attack lowers defense. If you are attacked by a bunch of wolf tribe warriors your defence will quickly go down a lot. If three squares attacks you you will have 9*2 attacks on you. the first of these will be at def 22. The last will be at def 5.

Okay, that means that protection is a lot more important than defense against enemy hordes. I didn't have my ethereal yet, so the high defense and luck wasn't enough. Well, learned another lesson... Thanks!

Arkhan,

Possibly even more vital than Protection against hordes is the Encumbrance stat. Every time you make an attack, you get tired, and that affects your ability to make further attacks/defenses. Weapon length also has some bearing because it affects your chances to repeel (pg. 76 of manual explains). Kraken has a Length 3 weapon, so I suppose he might have been repelling attacks too.

I'm not sure whether a repelled attack still degrades your defense on the next attack.

So if say I give a unit the two axes of rulership.
This makes it so the guy atks 4 times because each axe atks twice. So if I then give him the stone bird it is 8 atks. If then I give him boots of quickness he does 16 atks. Does that mean that even if the enemy has a def of say 200 I will hit.
I don't really under stand how much the def is reduced my actking. Does my guys atk skill affect it.

Every attack in a round reduces the target's defense by two.
So the first attack will hit if (2d6oe + attack skill) > (2d6oe + defense skill) while the 16th attack will hit if (2d6oe + attack skill) > (2d6oe + defense skill - 30). So, no you still aren't touching to 200. :-)

Note this is one way it can be helpful to not fight alone but bring some friends along (especially on Guard Commander orders).
