STOP !!! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/shock.gif
Man, you're just about to make the heaviest mistake of your entire life. DONT TOUCH that game !! http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/evil.gif
Or be ready to throw away your mundane life.
That's just a matter of critical choice after all.
Fate and so on.
Enjoy the few days you have left and remember the light of the sun, the sounds of the countryside, the smell of a hot italian coffee and fresh bread. /threads/images/Graemlins/icon05.gif
THAT is life.
This is your last chance.
You have been warned.

Agreed. Put the game away. Enjoy the 5 weeks of summer in the Great White North while you can. Pick it up after that first snow in August. (I'm from MN and we get 6 weeks). http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/wink.gif

Ho yes, one more question to you, Sinner Candew.
Is it the "hot babe clicking syndrome" that led you into this foolish path ? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Gandalf Parker used to greet newcomers with this short piece of text that goes straight to the point. Since he's not around ATM, I took the liberty of continuing the tradition.
WARNING: this game is NOT suitable for students, interns, apprentices, or anyone else who is expected to pass tests on a regular basis. Do not think about Dominions strategys while operating heavy machinery. Before getting into this game you should take steps to insure that someone checks on you at least every 3 days. Some side affects include but are not limited to dehydration, malnutrition, and in some rare cases exploded bladders. If you find your game Lasting more than 36 hours straight then see your doctor (but do NOT show him the game!).

Hello Candew ... Dominions_3 has lots of deep strategies and even more in MP games because of diplomacy. Playing the game via hotseat can be great fun with friends/family.
Also once your full version arrives make sure to download and install the patch for not only bug fixes, but LOTS of extra game content.

You can make it a bit easier on if you set the independent settings to 6 or 7, because that slos the AI down a bit in the early stages. Slows you as well, but I've found Indies 7 to be optimal for balancing AIs. Impossible ones anyway. I still often get steamrollered if I encounter an impossible AI too early and it has gotten too much of an advantage.

Thank you for this. I have been reading over the older posts and was thinking that for my next game I will adjust this setting to allow for a slower paced game and to allow my older and more idle brain to get accustomed to the game mechanics. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Just one?

No. Usually it happens that I encounter one, proceed to kick the snot out of it and then get jumped by two or three others and that's it. Depends on the terrain too, if there are no chokepoints, it's worse.
I did get completely flattened by a single AI one time. Started 3 provinces away from MA Ulm when playing Eriu. The horde of Guardians it threw at me was completely ridiculous and my army consisted mostly of Tuatha Warriors. It wasn't pretty...

In my last play through with independents set to 7, I had the AI on the ropes when the demo timed out.
Or should I should say, the AI's beat up on each other leaving me alone to quietly build up and then take the victor on.
I am slowly getting the hang of it. http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smirk.gif
Edit: received notification that my game shipped. If all goes well, I should have it before the end of next week http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/smile.gif

I lost recently to the AI when I was playing as machaka with a turmoil luck build. I just had terrible events, unlucky battles and then a big marignon army of cavalry showed up and blasted through my provinces one by one as ctisian dominion swept over me. Nasty. I can usually thrash several impossible AIs at once, but anyone can get caught out every now and then.

A good mod for a new player is my Beowulf mod. It buffs MA Man by giving them a hero to start the game. It also removes old age from their crones, resulting in less micromanagement for new players.
Man is a good race to learn the game with as it has a good mix of infantry, cavalry, bowmen, and base evocation magic.
http://www.mediafire.com/?z1d4zsim9nx
just download it and extract it to dom III/mods folder. then when you start up the game, select preferences and enable the mod, then play ma man and you should give the AI a good battle!

Thanks Xietor,
Now that I have my full copy in hand, I look forward to trying out the many modded races, maps, etc.
Is there any website or post that rates the various mods (maps, new races, etc.)?

My first play on the demo i always put the independant to 9, without that the AI was always going a lot more quickly than me at gaining ground and strength.
Of course, there was a lot about the game i didn't knew, so i was making mistakes after mistakes .
(the worst one was to "turtle" a bit , thinking i would get some good army, the AI just walked all over those armies when i thought they wee good enough).
Really a great game

In my first couple of weeks in the game i struggle too - playing on medium map with 3 normal AI opponents. I have no problems 1 on 1 against them, but struggle when I get hit on two fronts. Last game I tried to rush my nearest neighbour to rpevent that, and took out his capital and most of his army, but got hit at home before I could finish him off, resulting in a 2 front war that was pretty much a stalemate
In my current game I seem to be doing better (despite copping an affliction on my wyrm pretender in my first battle) and have hopes of winning, but we'll see!
what i'm gathering is the need to be more efficient with my armies. In order to build the size of armies I currently need to bash the AI around, i end up economy starved, and tend to take what are probably excessive casualties. Presumably some better choices and use of equipment are what's in order. Or perhaps fewer researchers sitting at home and more investment in research items in stead, in order to cut the costs somewhat. We'll see, its great to have a game where there is so much to learn

Look at the "Mod List" thread, pinned in the Mods&c forum.
Also have a look at the Strategy Index :

A lot of usefull inspiration here. Although I confess making noobs errors is part of the fun. After all, why would you trust those guys writing guides since they are potential ennemies ? http://forum.shrapnelgames.com/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
